Build Something Competition 2020, a.k.a. 'The Potato Cup'. *)
The theme for the BSC2020 is:
Wreck and Ruin
GENERAL RULES
A child board has been set up in the Workbench section and all build threads must be started in this. A dedicated Gallery has been set up just for hosting contest images so please post your photos here:
Gallery for BS2020 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=gallery;cat=101)
You can then add them to your build thread - any questions regarding this just let me know.
The official start date is 01:00 GMT Saturday 4th January 2020 and all applicants must notify their intent to take part on the registration thread by Saturday January 25th, 2020. They will then be listed in the registration post. The list of entrants will be in alphabetical order (no favoritism). Please let me know if your username is wrong.
YOU CAN START YOUR BUILD THREAD IN THIS SUB-FORUM DIRECTLY.
Please name your thread according to this pattern:
BSC2020 <member name> <build title> - for example, 'BSC2020 Hammers French Cat House', where Hammers would be the user's forum name and 'French Cat House' would be the object being built.
If you change your mind, if Real Life intrudes or if you realise after some contemplation the theme is not to your taste - just let me know and I shall remove your name.
One entry per member (no joint contributions).
Finished entries must be submitted no later than midnight Sun 9th March 2020 and the voting will start shortly after. That should allow for plenty of time to build something.
The build threads of the entrants should include as many progress shots as possible, including sketches, sources of inspiration etc. NO PHOTOS OF THE FINISHED ENTRY SHOULD BE POSTED ON THE THREAD - painting in progress is not allowed, only primed entries are permissible on the build threads - if you are unsure then please ask. I would however turn a blind eye to small details which have to be finished before assembly (for example a pilot and controls in an enclosed cockpit).
Final entries must consist of either one photo OR a photo-montage of the finished piece. No photo manipulation will be allowed apart from cropping, white balance and contrast within reason. Again, if you are unsure then please ask. You may include one separate figure in the final entry photo to indicate the relative size of the entry.
Photo size should be 1000x1000 pixels and sent as a jpeg to 'bsc2020@tsome.com'
Depending on the number of entries, voting will take place in one or more group, and then, again depending of the number of entries, the top one or two entries of each group will advance to a final vote.
A NOTE ON BIAS AND CONDUCT
I (Hammers) will, most likely be entering a build myself. I've done so in the past and I can pretty much prove the rules were not bent in my favour. I did not win, see, except once, and therefore it doesn't count! . :D
While everyone is allowed, as per usual, to comment in progress threads, please keep things encouraging and constructive.
Although winners will be voted by the members collective of the LAF, if there is any sense of foul play the judges’ decision is final, although we would hope that it won't be necessary given the friendly nature of the LAF.
THEME RULES
The entry must include something that ties in with the theme of 'Wreck and Ruin'.
The theme should be interpreted as including all sorts of objects fallen into severe disrepair, be it crashed vehicles, blitzed buildings, ancient ruins and ships thrown onto reefs.
Ruined things often poses more challenges to the modeller than its well maintained counterpart and in this competition we want to see out participants excel in this. You may enhance your (de-)constructions with little embellishments like nesting animals, skeletons or firemen, if you like.
Although we have in the past seen some quite remarkable entries you should not think of this as a diorama contest! The entries should be practical gaming board props or gaming pieces. So rid yourselves of thoughts of fancy walnut veneer bases or artful backdrops.
Remember that the competition is run within the confines of the Workbench board: you have to build something. What singles out the Build Something Contest is that it is about construction of something new. The vast majority of the piece should be scratch built, and only 0-25% can be commercially bought items or figures. The rest must be handmade. If you have any questions either ask them here, to the above buildsomething email or via pm, but please label your email/ pm Build Something 2020.
The entries should be based for placement on a game board. You may enter up to three individual bases. There is no limit to base size, nor the shape of the base, but remember that the larger the build, the more difficult it will be to detect details in the posted picture.
There is no minimum or maximum limit of figures in the entry as long as they are an integral part of it. The traditional single, individually based miniature for size indication will be allowed.
Any period or setting is allowed as long as it fits with the theme including sci-fi, historical, pulp, fantasy etc.
Just like last year, any amount of 3D printing is allowed but we ask you to be especially diligent in including images from design steps (3D design files) and of part printouts in the your progress thread.
Conversion of commercially-bought items is allowed also e.g. as long as it is a major 'refactoring'. Another example could be a plastic aeroplane kit: adding a couple of extra parts to the kit would not be sufficient to qualify, but having some of the parts from a sprue on an entirely new build would be fine. Again, if in doubt, please ask.
It's not possible to cover all the eventualities, so please use your common sense and play fair. :D
Good luck, and happy building to all - and don't forget to REGISTER YOUR INTENT and START A THREAD.
Post any rules queries and comments as replies.
*) The name 'The Potato Cup' comes from an early run of the competition where a number of items where offered to the winner, among them a raw unpeeled potato. The winner picked the potato. Well, we thought it was funny at the time...
-
I’m in :) And thank you Hammers for the hard work setting it up.
-
I'm in.
I also googled "French Cat House" (It's a little hot here, I read it as "French Cat... house") as I had no idea what a "French Cat" was... there's actually some cute cat beds, etc in that search lol.
-
Well 'Wreck and Ruin' works well with either Necromunda or Age of Sigmar, so I'm in :)
Now I just have to come up with something, that I can actually finish in time lol
-
Count me in.
-
count me in
-
Sounds big! Sign me up.
-
Yeah, why not. I could do with a little something extra for this years Salute board :)
-
I’m in - could do with some terrain for my Game of Thrones project
:)
-
yes I should be up for this
I have a little unexpected time on my hands :'(
-
Wreck and Ruin? When I am about to embark on building more terrain for a post-apocalyptic Pulp Alley Vice Alley campaign? PERFECT!
-
I'm in. I have an idea that'll work with my current AWI projects. I just need to decide how to add the ruined aspect to it.
-Elroy
-
I suspect I will have a go at this. Now I just need to decide which theatre of operations it should fit into. Mediterranean? Northern Europe? The Far East?
-
Will most likely get on board with this - need to concentrate on one idea!
-
I am in!!
-
It's about time I joined this madness so I'm in.
-
Rules question :
I want to make an entry that is a wrecked version of a model that I previously made. That initial model was a scratchbuilt and then resin cast item in multiple parts. 95% of the model was scratchbuilt with a small number of commercial parts used with agreement.
Can I resin cast another copy of the item from my original molds for the basis of the competition entry, with extensive further scratch building? Will this count as starting before the deadline because the molds and original model are a few years old?
-
Right, I'm in. I've been wanting to do some ruined abbey bits for my English countryside scenery and that fits nicely into the theme.
Can't promise anything earthshattering or novel but it should at least look nice!

Let me consider this for a bit and get back to you.
-
Sure I'm in, I've always wanted to do one of these since I saw last year's amazing builds! Do tell me if I've done something wrong as it's my first go.
-
Been thinking on this for a few days...and yes...my ongoing Mortal Gods and Clash Of Spears projects are going to need some scenery...been ages since I built anything from the ground up as it were...so I’m in....just need to decide what with now lol

I have given this a bit of a ponder, in fact more than necessary as the answer is quite obvious: a basic concept of the competition is that all participants should scratch build something, from scratch, being allowed to start at the same time and be able to finish the work at the same time. So I rule No to your suggested approach.
I hope you can come up with another project.

Hmm OK.
Not sure that I see the logic in the argument there.
You are saying that I can't copy and modify parts that I have made previously, but I can use parts from models that others have made previously and I have bought?
It strikes me that working from something I have created is a lot more challenging than buying a model and using parts of that in the competition.
Ok, that's the ruling. I'll see if there's another project that inspires me. If not, then I guess I'm out.
-
Yes that is the ruling. It has never been an issue so far. You should, in fact, you should *all* be aware that since we have progress threads during the competition prep time, the creative effort that goes into the project will have an impact on how people vote.
-

More creativity gets better votes - I entirely understand that - it makes sense, and would certainly affect my voting. I'm all for it.
By your own rules...
The vast majority of the piece should be scratch built, and only 0-25% can be commercially bought items or figures.
and
Conversion of commercially-bought items is allowed also e.g. as long as it is a major 'refactoring'.
You are ruling that using casts of ANY parts that have previously been created is illegal.
Using up to 25% commercially bought parts is OK.
That defeats your own intent that you want to see more creativity not less.
As an example. Your ruling means that I can buy a GW 40k Rhino kit as a basis of a model and significantly butcher it and modify it to create a wrecked version. But I cannot take a model tank that I have previously scratch built, take the time effort and skill necessary to take a cast from it, butcher and modify that until only 25% remains and use that as my entry.
I am very surprised that your ruling is not a moderate "as long as it's less than 25%", or "as long as the cast parts have significant and major remodelling." or some such, rather than just a blanket "No" without discussion.
Anyway - your competition, your rules.
-
Well, I could have been moderate and you could have asked me to consider the 25% rule.
I will let you base your contribition on a cast, if it can be considered no more than a quarter of the total build.
-
25 have put their names down, hopefully at least half will make it through, could be a big year for the BSC :)
-
I think I forgot to stake a claim: back after a railway hiatus and in too.
-
As I'm in desperate need of more terrain I think I feel obliged to sign up!
I think I'm going to attempt something frozen...
-
Excellent chaps, the more the merrier :D
-

Indeed. Very encouraging.
With this much competition I will have to reconsider my entry.
-
Unless you're too busy,it would be a shame for you to duck out.

This.
Would be great to see what you come up with Hammers :)
-

That's not what I meant. :) I mean a burnt out truck doesn't seem all that competitive an entry with these many talented builders.
-

Well I was thinking about some simple ruined buildings to go with my BSC2018 entry :-I
I guess that won't cut it either lol
-
There must be some wreck that I need. I'm in!
-
I’m in as well. Not sure if I have to post it here to make it official.
I am building something for Necromunda. And have a quick question. I have loads of the old plastic bulkheads. Am I allowed to use them in my build? I’ll try and keep them below the 25% limit but it is difficult to judge where that limit goes. But I really want to include them for that Necromunda aesthetic.
-
Up to 25%, no prob. Glad you are joining us!
The official enrollment is by starting a build thread as described in the rules.
-
Great I have one of those. I just wanted to make sure.
I assume repurposed styrofoam packaging, squirt guns, dead hoovers and printers does not go into the prefabricated category.
-

Whatever rubbish you find in the bin, yes, as long as each part used does not constitute more than a quarter of the total build. I really cannot be more precise. If you are unsure, message me the details and concerns.
-
Well, I could have been moderate and you could have asked me to consider the 25% rule.
I will let you base your contribition on a cast, if it can be considered no more than a quarter of the total build.
Great. Thank you for reconsidering. I hope what I build is worth it.
-
I have a question as well. The rules say: " You may enter up to three individual bases"
If I do more than one base, all of them have to contain some wreck or ruin, or it is enough if one has it, and the other two is only thematically tied to it. Eg.: I put a crash-landed spaceship into a pool of acidic goo, and make two other pools of the same goo is ok, or I should distribute the wreckage among the three bases (or just stick to one base)?
-
That’s alright as long as it is clear that there is some sort of themed center piece among the three
-
I think I'll join this as long as I can come up with an idea that's interesting enough to pursue.
-

Thanks, that's great.
I cant wait to get started, especially after I finally decided what to build lol
-
Just to be clear: you can start your builds whenever. You do not need to wait till Jan 25th.

Sat. the 4th is the date we can start posting pics isn't it,or have I got that wrong?
-
Count me in... :D

Excellent...what scale will it be in....?
;)
-
Five and three quarter mil, I'm building my own niche. :P
-
I am going to have to put some color on the inside of my greenhouse before I can add the vegetation - should I just quit posting pics when I start the vegetation?
-

I thought it was everything - but I'm taking this interpretation too.
-
How many rounds is this having? ???
-
How many rounds is this having? ???
It's a bit early to say, as it depends on the drop out rate. I like to group entries in groups of four to five and have the winners proceed to finals. With almost 30 contestants we could have semifinals and then finals.
-
Oh okay, thanks. :)
-
What I really like with the BSC is that we get to follow how builders go from vision to execution. With this theme there are several specific problems which need to be solved when making broken things. How do they come apart as the rust, crumble, break and crash...
-
I am sorry to say that i have to drop out of the race already.
-
Hammers: Did I read that right - we can start already? Confused on pics too...?
Mine is going to be boring CAD to start with I'm afraid.... then boring print....
Then attack with WMD (Well a dremel then chemicals)
Edit: RTFM - could have started on the 4th... will start tonight ;)

Well said. One of the other things I enjoy about the BSC is the process; sketches ,the research, and in particular thinking about the build, ideas can be very spontaneous, and when things just fall into place. Brilliant!
-
I'm about to join, but I am a bit delayed as I can not locate some of the stuff I intent to use.. :)

I have question regarding this:
The vast majority of the piece should be scratch built, and only 0-25% can be commercially bought items or figures.
Does this include embossed or textured materials? My structure will be making use of this:

... and possibly something like this:

I'm sure this is going to bite me, but please add me to the list; I'm working on a brand new table and will need some terrain to match it... :D

Should be fine.

Awesome, thank you. :)
-
Are entries meant to be a single based terrain piece, or are multiple individually based pieces acceptable? I thought I saw this addressed somewhere but now I can't find it in the rules. I'm finalizing my plans ahead of the registration deadline on Saturday and for the sake of playability I'd like to make my entry on more than one base.

Buried in the rules, bolding added by me:

(I needed to remind myself of that too, as I'd planned more individual bases than that initially but will scale back for the BSC entry I really do need to actually start building...)
-
Thanks Wirelizard. I knew I had read something about up to three bases somewhere. I guess I missed it when I reread the rules before posting ::)

And the finished photos are in. Woot!

Try bsc2020@tsome.com.
I'll put it in the rules page to.

Pic sent - let me know if it makes it.

Recieved! And what a lovely build! :-*
-
Awesome, and thanks. The hard part now is not posting it anywhere while I wait for the judging...in what, 2 months? That's bloody forever!

Yeah a little quiet with just a couple of weeks to go... :-I. Mar. 9th seemed sooo far away when the contest was announced lol.

Well, I'm done, and just waiting with bated breath for the reveals.

keener!!! lol

I just send in my picture of the finished piece. Could you let me know if you received it , please.
-
Please take me out. I had hoped to make a late start but life is intervening.
Thanks
-
Looking forward to the 9th- been perusing the various entrants on a regular basis and they look so good that I can't wait to see the finished results
-
Please take me out. I had hoped to make a late start but life is intervening.
Thanks
A pity, but will do.
-
I have just sent my entry can you let me know it is OK
Cheers Colin
-
The photo rule should be changed for next year. I think builders should be encouraged to contribute somewhere between 3 and 5 images so voters can peruse each build for details and different angles.
-
Agreed - it was really difficult to get anywhere close to all the detail into a single 1000x1000.
-
I have crashed in flames this time round - work took a turn for the mega-overload-size worse, and I did not even manage to start cutting material, or glue stuff.
Sorry guys. :(
-
Entry sent- hopefully I did it right. o_o

Well, poop. Next year?
-
Hopefully.
At least the big (work) project I am involved in should be over by then.
-
Arrrgh! My camera is 24 megapixels, and I suspect my computer isn’t...
Photo soon to be sent, after an existential crisis ;D
-
And sent :) Phew...
-
Just to be sure; we have till tomorrow evening (09/03, 2359h), right? ???
Because I'm still in full painting mode; the inside's all done, but I still have to do the entire outside... ::)
-
I sent mine again as it wasn't showing up in my 'Sent' folder... :(

Actually, because of a misstanke I made in the rules, you have until monday night. I chose to err in favour of you lot.
-
Hammers,
Can background terrain be included in the photo. I am thinking of using some tree that I have made. Many thanks.
Lon
-
My photo has been sent.
-
Photo sent :)
-
People, let me tell you, based on the photos I’ve recieved so far you (we) are in for quite a treat next week.
And let me reiterate: you have until monday midnight to send me your photos. Tht applies to those of you who have already sent me your entries and want to ammend them (or change build altogether ;) )
-
I sent in a picture right now, just to be sure, but I will try to make a better one tomorrow. :)
-
Now the real challenge is getting a few decent pictures of my finished build :?
-
I did a collage of 4 photos- even then it was hard to find the right 4 (not sure I got them right either... :?).
-

I did three, and probably buggered it up ;D
-
I did three, and probably buggered it up ;D
I can’t take photos to save my life, so I guess I’m screwed lol
-
I can’t take photos
Neither can I. I made a collage showing a few different views of my project, but I think I need to redo it since I noticed some crap on the backdrop mat after I put it all together.
-
I am glad that I am in good company lol lol lol I didn't even attempt a collage.
-
As I’ve posted before, scenery builds differ from miniatures as they most often are larger and have more details scattered around. For next year We should allow for multiple pics rather than collages.
-
I attempted the collage, but was I happy with it? Not really. I figure we're all in the same boat, so it is what it is.
-
I think a collage is a good format, but changing the rules next time to allow for more than one image would make things easier. Depending on the build different formats work better for showing the finished product.
-
Agreed. I think we could have two photos in BSC3.
I have to say,I’m waiting with bated breath to see everyone’s work, such brilliant and different builds. And for some reason I enjoy the BSC much more than competing in the LAF,although I put just as much work in :)

Took another photo before I left for work today, and resubmitted hopefully this one hasn’t got my thumb in it.... lol

How long do we have until these are meant to be finished? I've gone the long way around... lol
