First Idea: a badly damaged galleon is fighting a desperate and hopeless struggle after a lost encounter on sea against the elements.
-
Great idea, look forward to seeing it develop
:)

I was always fascinated of the old oil paintings themed around the four day battle 1666...

Because 1666 warships are a little bit difficult to build, I switched to the much more simplified "Half Moon" model and made a first sketch..

That looks complicated , good luck
-
My teammate and I have nearly finished all plans for the galleon by now...

Teammate! More like Captian I imagine! ;D It looks very impressive, I am excited to see how this turns out.

Wow ! That’s either a very small dog or a very big boat !
-
The model is 1:50 Corel wooden static kit. If (ever) finished it will have a length of 520mm. So its a large dog…
First ideas are to turn the flyboat into a warship by increasing the number of guns up to 16 or 18 and some swivel guns. Thomarillion offers some high quality for a small budget.
Today the first part of the crew arrived…

1. Captain Blackadder and Companions
2. Bystanders, wellwishers, settlers, nobles and/or rich merchants
3. Sea soldiers
4. Boarding party
5. Gun crew and sailors

How do you get your dog and ship plans to stick to the ceiling like this? Most impressive thing so far! :D
This might be the most ambitious plan so far for BSC2020, I wish you luck!
-
Holy cow... This is ambitious. Wrecked sailing ships means oodles of details in disarray. Difficult.
-
I have to confess I have started some days ago with this project….
Step 1 All parts for the inner structure were made from 4mm plywood. I tried to make difficult parts with my 3d printer, but meanwhile my printer has big troubles with the heating…
(https://i.imgur.com/PQ0u5St.jpg)
Step 2 test if all parts of the main deck will fit together…
(https://i.imgur.com/CH1k0Lu.jpg)
Step 3 final test if all parts of the inner structure will fit together
(https://i.imgur.com/Hg14KV4.jpg)
Step 4 general layout of all parts finished so far…

Amazing rate of progress and very impressive to boot

Wow....you are making really great progress
:o 8)

Really interesting topic !

great progress

Thanks all for the nice and motivating comments.
Next step in building the ship: Filling all gaps with balsa to stabilize the structure.

Other parts got black paint. This parts will hold the guns or models of crew members
Now came the boring part sanding everything down again...

Next steps will be some minor repairs in the bow and aft section before starting with the first planking.
-
Wow, a lot of work already! Good start.
-
Looking good!
-
amazing work

Somehow the temperature sensor of my 3d printer is broken and the last results are beyond all hope. But beside that I am happy that i have finished printing the ship armament.
wheels were made with a perforator
meanwhile the second part of the ship crew arrived, I used the ghost archipelago crew as a base with some kitbashing with napoleonic artillery made by victrix and helmets offered by warlord games.

next steps will be cut down the sides and opening the gunholes of the main deck
-
This is a fantastic build. Well done.
Can you explain the materials and techniques?
Is it just Balsa wood and PVA glue?
Do you cut with a saw or a scalpel?
Do you use a lot of clamps?
Do you do a lot of sanding to get the curves?
Thanks
Mick

It just gets better and better

Hi, thanks for the questions:
the techniques are the same as for static wooden ship models, in fact I use the same plan for the corel half moon kit https://victoryshipmodels.com/ship-model-half-moon-wooden-static-kit-corel-dutch-galleon.html. It always starts with an innere structure made of 4mm plywood. Than I use balsa to form the shape of the hull as shown in this picture.
The first planking is made of 1,5x5mm basswood. This is a standard material to build ship models. Before applying the planks they were cooked in boiled water to soften them and fixed with clothes pegs.
For the side walls I use three layers to stabilize the walls.
To shape the curves I use a vibrating grinder; this tool is awesome and it is very fast
(https://i.imgur.com/FPWRJKL.jpg)
The final planking is made with walnut 0,5x5mm planks.

Thank-you very much for the tutorial.
:o
-
This is a great build, looks really nice! :-*
-
Looks incredible so far! Is it going to sit on the table as it is currently, or is it going to be based?
-
Thank-you very much for the tutorial.
:o
Seconded, really useful information. Very impressive project.
-
Fantastic!

Real life caught my time, so now I'm in a great hurry to get things finished if possible...

Wow; that is some really impressive (wood)work there! 8)
It's almost a shave to let her sink...
One question; where are the guns from?

I agree! :D

Great stuff :)
-
Lovin’ it! Thanks for sharing this project, I have a weakness for galleons. Looking forward to seeing the completed project. Keep up the great work!
-
Thanks very much for the nice comments!
One question; where are the guns from?
The guns were extracted from a warehouse sketchup model ship: https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model/9b5bef21-6b15-456f-8ac9-37e8d1a990ba/ANCIENT-SPANISH-GALEON-CIRCA-1600 (https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model/9b5bef21-6b15-456f-8ac9-37e8d1a990ba/ANCIENT-SPANISH-GALEON-CIRCA-1600) and converted into a stl file for 3d printing.

Thanks for the info; I should be able to do that on my own, but I really need to take the time to get that printer set up and get acquainted with slicing software etc... ::)
