Title: BSC2020 DrMathias's Ruined Farmhouse
Post by: Dr Mathias on December 22, 2019, 04:41:48 PM
Might as well hop in on this again. As much as I'd like to add to the ole' Space Hulk I planned on making some buildings for Rangers of Shadow Deep anyway, so "ruined farmhouse" it is :)

Nah ...go with an entire space hulk  ;)

Seriously through, interested to see what you come up with, although I might have to change my own plans.

 :)

I bought a 3D printer a couple of weeks ago and it has drawn me away from some of my other projects. Just to prove (mainly to myself ;) ) that I'm still making a ruined house I started to lay out the foundation, and discovered that I'm the unusual position of needing to cast more bricks...

Walls will be foam core with balsa for timbers. Thatched roof and all that :) Nothing special really so it should go quick once I get rolling.

Or make a smaller ruin?  Nah. Forget I said that.   lol

Tempting suggestion, although I'm building it for a Rangers of Shadow Deep scenario and it has a recommended size :)

My bad.    I like the new layout.

Looks like you've got a nice start. When I played the Rangers of Shadow Deep scenario in question we just put two buildings together that were roughly the right size. It will be nice to see your build of a properly sized dedicated structure for the farm mission.

"We are friends. From Alladore."

Good start! Looking forward to the progress! I haven't reached "The Last Stand" yet but i'll need some inspiration for when I get there.

I haven't reached the Last Stand yet either :) I should be working on Tor Varden! :)

Laid out the walls today. I may figure out the roof next (I don't usually enjoy figuring out how the angles of two gable roofs interact) or do the wood wall bracing.

Ah, a building that is actually realistic in its proportions ánd playable on the table :)

Great progress.

And beams, angles and gables ought to be just basic geometry, right? In my experience, the biggest challenge is making all cuts at the exact right angles, because even a single degree off can have dire results when it comes to fitting stuff together, although that probably says more about my capabilities as a crafter than anything else... lol

Good luck with the roof at any rate :)

Looking great Dr. Mathias. Great use of the Hirst stone walls. I look forward to the carpentry. :D

Thanks fellows. I decided to texture the walls with Elmer's Wood Filler before I added the wood bracing. I think it may be easier to paint the walls, then apply the wood (I'm using coffee stir sticks). Painting the daubed walls will take a lot longer if I have to be careful around the wood.

The Elmer's wood filler is an excellent idea. I'm not sure how durable it is but it goes on easily and dries relatively quickly and takes paint well. It's something I plan to use more of in the future.

You can stain the wood before you cut it as well.  That is what my carpenters did when working on the house years ago.  Makes it a lot easier in real life too.  lol

Roof in place, made from framer's matboard. I'll need to add a hole or two in the thatch to give the impression of a derelict house (plus the RoSD "Last Stand" scenario calls for a holed roof).

If nothing else, I move fast when I actually get started on a project. Oftentimes it takes a project a year or three just to germinate :)

Textured the roof today. My thatch method uses Wallboard Joint Compound (basically drywall 'mud' for patching walls). I apply a coat and 'rake' through it using a plastic whisk broom. This time, to emphasize the broken look, I glued in some cut off ends of coarse jute cord.

To give the effect of 'layers' I apply a strip, let it set, apply some tape, and apply another layer of joint compound.

Yeah, really excellent technique. The effect with the jute around the holes is super.
