Finally throwing my hat into the ring. I've been exceptionally busy with real life the past few weeks, but hope to get enough time for an entry.
My first thought when the contest was announced was to build a ruined version of the Folly I built for BSC2018. However, the rock outcrop for it was a piece of bark and I didn't think I would be able to find a matching piece. It would also be very time consuming, time that I don't envisage having in the coming weeks.
Therefore I have decided to build some generic ruins. Most of my terrain is desert based, so it will fit in with that. I have a scenario for a future Back of Beyond game that needs some archaeological ruins/dig site so have decided to make it suitable for that. By making some elements removable, and with the addition of further items post BSC, I hope to make it a fairly useful item for other periods/genre: Back of Beyond, Pulp, Fantasy, Mogadishu'93, Sci-Fi (SG1, Dune, 7TV), Post Apoc, etc
My rough scribblings and thoughts:
I will be making two or three separate bases. Two of actual ruins and a third (If time allows) of some excavations.
The ruined walls will have wooden scaffold that can be removed depending on period/scenario.

Sounds good, I look forward to your build!
-
Glad to see you joining the fun Paul
Good luck with your build
-
Can we use that site for our summer 2020 Uni archaeology fieldwork? :D
We'd need awnings, the sun DOES get hot in late June... ;)
-
This is a great idea. I wish I had come up with it...
-
Excellent idea - look forward to watching your progress
:)
-
Many thanks for the comments and encouragement. :)

Awnings aren't something I had considered. I defer to your expertise and hope I don't give you too many glaring errors to pick me up on. My archaeology experience is limited to watching episodes of Time Team and digging up a US steel helmet in my grandparents garden when I was 10. :D

A mock-up of what I am aiming for:
All just balanced together to give me an idea of layout etc. The 'stone' blocks of blue foam that will be sanded to take the edges off. The cardboard and cocktail sticks as temporary scaffold.
The early work on the project is being overseen by the eminent archaeologist Sir Doug Test-Pitt. ;)
-
That looks brill Paul; I've said it before, worth stating again,I'm going to have to up my game,so many great ideas, and talented builders(erm). I can't believe I get a little competitive, just a wee bit lol
-
That's going to be a great build. Looking forward to it.
-
The 'stone' blocks of blue foam that will be sanded to take the edges off.
If you put them in a tupperware box with some gravel and shake them it does the same thing, and it makes small surface dents etc. that 'age' the stone blocks. The more vigorous you shake it the more dented they get. You can also roll a handful together between your hands to round off the edges.
That's how I did the ones in this wall:
I also tore the corners off a few blocks before the shaking process to get the damaged ones.
-
That's a great tip!
-
Two things....
(1) @ Overlord - this is a great idea....very evocative...will there be inscriptions ?
(2) @ Dr De’ath - that is a really good tip - thanks for sharing it
-
nice start
-
Paul - Love the idea and the mock up. It has given me some ideas for an ancients game and terrain.
Mark - Great tip for the stones. Likewise with the ideas.
-
Looking forward to this one. ;D
-
Me too- I wanted to build an archeological dig site for a Pulp Alley table but never got around to it.

Thats a great tip Mark. I had also considered rubble filled walls, like yours, but it would be too thick for what I have in mind.
Unfortunately I had already glued together most of one ruin before I read your post, so have continued with my original plan, 'ageing' the blocks with crunched up baking foil.
First ruin with untextured blocks:

Second ruin with textured blocks:

Ground texture and construction of the scaffolding to do next.

Looks good Paul 8)

Looking good :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

The texturing is subtle but a definite improvement- well done.
-
I like this a lot :-*
-
Loving it!

Thanks for all the comments. :)
The texturing is subtle but a definite improvement- well done.
The camera doesnt really pick it up very well. One bonus texturing it in situ is that the blocks 'squish' together a bit to appear tighter fitting.
Scaffolding:
Cocktail sticks, bamboo, balsa and coffee stirrers (Just for James :D ) The planking isn't glued in place yet. I need to add the rope holding the poles together before I do that.

I will leave the scaffolds free-standing so they can be added and removed depending how I want to use the ruins.
-
Very realistic :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Looks great

Looking really nice so far. I'm sure the finished product will be great.
-
Excellent work so far. Very cool!

Veryy clean and good looking build. Paul.
-
Now that most of the work is complete for the two main bases, I think that I will have time for a third.
This will be lower level ruins, exposed as an archaeological dig:
Nothing stuck in place yet (just a big hole cut in the MDF), positioned to work out the layout. Trying to represent different levels of digging.
It could be used in conjuction with the other pieces or as a standalone item.
-
Brilliant stuff Paul 8)
-
lovely detail
-
Very nice....will make a great looking set up when they are all together
-
I love the scaffolding- really well done- as are the flag stones.
-
Wow they're coming along great!
-
Nice progress on this build Paul :)

digging up skeletons alway slow down the work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
looking forward to the painting
-
Looking excellent already ;D
-
Cool! That's more than we usually find in our digs :D
-
Minor work done; such as sealing everything with thinned PVA to provide a bit more durability. I still haven't added rope to the scaffolding yet.
Last chance for (lots of) pics before painting commences:

That came out great, I love the rectangular excavation pits.
-
I thing of beauty. I am sure I'll be constructing something like it shortly. In my book your build is just as qualified as any other making it to rounds 2 and 3.
-
Waiting to see a game with this in it Paul
Need to be a solo game though :'(
-
The finished article is brilliant. Well played.
-
That's a great piece of terrain.

Seconded. BLAM maybe?
-
Beautiful!
-
Thanks for the extra photos, very nice!

Totally,excellent build :-*
-
Thanks all. :)
The standard of entries this year was outstanding. I really didn't mind getting knocked out in round 1, as many others were also eliminated that could have gone further.
For a change, my BSC entry actually has a practical use so will see service on the table (once hostilities are able to resume). All my previous BSC builds have seen little or no subsequent use. I will try to take a few pics of the ruins in different settings/periods, even if not from a real game (yet).

That would be great to see- you could play a solo game and post pixpls. :)

First (face to face) Back of Beyond game since February, played this afternoon: Somewhere in China

British Army & archaeologists vs Warlord Chinese: Sir Doug Test-Pitt removing valuable artifacts for onward transport to the safety of the V&A.

Good to see the piece in play, nice work :)
-
Splendid :)

I see James’s “Splendid”, and raise you a “Tremendous”
:)
-
I knew it would come in useful! :)
Looks great Paul.

I Thought I had already commented on this ?
but still a lovely model :-* :-* :-*
where is the rest of the battle report?
-
+1 to the nice job AND +1 to the request for the battle report (& more action pictures).
-
where is the rest of the battle report?
Sadly not much else to show :-[. I took a few pics of the ruins early on in the game, then forgot to take any more as we became engrossed in only our second wargame since February.
A close-up of the Brits in the ruins:

Brilliant build!!! Any chance I’m getting the color palette used?

Brilliant build!!! Any chance I’m getting the color palette used?
Thanks Jeff. Hope you are keeping well.
Bit of a memory test, as I didn't record what I used. ::)
The groundwork/sand colour is mixed from cheap acrylic Yellow Ochre with a bit of Burnt Umber in it. Drybrushed with cream, then again with some white mixed in, to match the rest of my existing desert-ish terrain.
The stonework is (I think) the Foundry Rawhide triad (11). Basecoated with 11A, liberally washed with GW Agrax Earthshade thinned with water. After allowing to completely dry, drybushed with 11B, then 11C. The foam blocks have lots of texture that the drybrushing picks out.
