Title: My 3D Printing Adventure
Post by: Hami on January 21, 2020, 01:01:35 PM
I have been hooked on 3d printing since my cousin introduced me to it a year and bit ago. Since then i have been busy designing and printing various different terrain to be used in games and rather than making several posts to display my work I thought I would just create this one and keep up dating this as I print more and more.

I mainly play Bolt Action games fighting in Normandy and Zombie games with the Old Man and Nephews. So I thought i would design a few buildings that can be used is both Zombie and ww2 games.

I have other designs on this forum like my normandy farm house ( http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=118422.msg1492410#msg1492410 ) which my old man painted.

I am NOT a great painter, sadly this job normally falls to the old man who is much better however since coming back to the UK i thought i would try and do it myself so please excuse the paint job.

Bellow is a small ruined corner piece of a building with some scatterable ruined walls / corner.

This is the Ruined Corner.

So I had a small amount of plastic left over before putting a new reel on, so I test printed part of my Hesco Project. This will be used in my Spectre Operations and Zombie games.

This is based on the product that that Hesco provide and is used a lot in modern defences, PBs, FOBS, MOBs, check points etc.

When I was out the country with work I managed to find some time in the evenings to work on my Normandy Project.

The finished product will be a normandy Style Village / town before and during fighting.

This is the project so far, these prints are just of the printer so need some tidying up etc.
Majority of them will have floors etc put in.

There is more to come o_o

The roof part failed towards the end hence why the top part is missing.

thank you,

These where printed on a Prusa i3, on draft mode (0.2mm - quick print option) otherwise they would along long time to print.

I have printed all the above buildings on 0.2mm layers, 10-12% infil. This is the fastest way of printing things. I have tried 0.15mm - 0.1mm layers for these designs but rather a 12 hour print it exceeds 20 hours.

My old man asked me to design the Abby like building from The Vengeance of the Lichemaster (Skaven) game.

I managed to find the original card designs online and this is what I based my design on.

I have also designed an intact version of this building which I will print at a later date.

I thought I would stick with the stone design I created for my ww2 stuff so that I could acquire this building from my old man to use in my Normandy Street fighting Bold Action games.

All I am missing now is the perimeter wall and tower, which is currently in-hand.

That last one looks even nicer than the previous ones. Out of interest, how do you do the flagstone and brick walls? Do you have a "3d texture" which you can map onto an existing piece or do you add them one by one?

i use AutoCAD for all my designs, i have not yet ventured into the 3d modelling software as yet. So i have designed a template (which took a few hours to do) and then I basically place this on to my design, do some minor adjustments and amendments to the overall design and then export it as a .stl file then print.

Sorry, I meant how big a volume can you print to?  My own is only 20cm x 20cm x20cm.......these look big models?

All my designs are for 20 x 20 x 20 as this is the capacity of my printer as well.

Most of designs do not exceed 18cm as this gives you space to brim if you think it is required.

I have started brimming a-lot of mine as there is nothing worse than 80% through print the corners lift (I have a few prints where that has happened).

So after a few days of convincing my 3d printer to stop turning my prints into spaghetti half way through, I have managed to get it working again and finally finished the Monastery complex.  Everything you see is based on the design that it can be used with any of the previous prints.
The external walls are now 30mm high rather than the 50mm high walls on the farm complex.
The gate has been reduced to 20mm in width and a door added (this can be used in Farm complex as well).

Why not let it print for those 20+ hours?  Do you have to babysit the printer the whole time?  Just wondering how this works.

Normally I am able to just leave it printing and it will do just print away however sometimes it likes to just do its own thing and turn prints in to spaghetti or if the print doesn't bond with the print sheet it could come loose and it messes your print up (this is rare but I have had it happen).

So after I sent my dad the photos of this (as it is for him) he asked me if it was possible to do a roof that is only damaged over the damaged parts of the building. rather than reprinting the whole thing I decided to design an over roof for him. This is placed over the original design so that he has both options, ruined roof and now partly ruined roof.

Here is what the finished roof looks like.

Back to my own little project of Bolt Action Street Fighting in Normandy.

I laid out my prints on my dads table and it should be a good board once complete. We started undercoating and priming these buildings today. putting the good weather to use.

One of my buildings was designed for an ambush style game.

Software is Cura (its free) for slicing and getting the G.Codes for the printer and i am currently using a Prusa I3 Mk3.

Really easy to use.

So I am taking a break from ww2 just and I have been test playing Spectre Operations over the last few weeks and I think i have started to get the hang of it now.

Many months ago my dad converted some Africa people to be the enemy call signs for my Operators and I hadn't really played any games using them. Since lock down I have been playing some solo games and using terrain that my old man very nicely allowed me to borrow.

After a few games using the same terrain I decided to start creating my own board for it.

I have named my Operators 'Task Force Fenrir' (the TF logo was created by my younger brother and then i converted it and printed it).

So I was thinking that I would created a large scale compound, snatch and grab / kill mission style with a few rooms to be cleared on each floor etc.

The photos below are off the guardhouse part of this compound.

Guardhouse part consists of the guardhouse its self, a garage and enough space to search incoming vehicles etc.

So my latest design and pint was based of the Saint Merie Eglise Boucherie Desmonts shop. The first photo is the photo that I used as a reference for getting the front and part of the side correct, then I switched to good old google maps for the rest of the design.

I had to change a few things on it i.e. one side of the building i was unable to find any photos or google map it so I added in a single door and window. On the other side there should be 3 doors, i removed one of these doors as i thought it made the print look less busy.

i have left enough free wall space so that this could be used as a corner or an end building. I am looking forward to putting these buildings to good use once COVID is lifted and I am able to visit the old man again.

Very nice. Have you thought about putting your creations up on kickstarter? Make a little bit of money out of them?
The roof looks like it could do with a little bit of an overhang as well judging by your source material (just a few mm)

There was a 1.5-2mm overhang however due to different angles of the roof it was lost and I never even thought about double checking it. I have since changed a few things on this design, 2mm overhang, tided up the tiles at some of the joints etc, added lines in to change the face of the first floor so that it looks like it has stone rather than solid (like the surround of the bottom floor).

As for kickstarter, I have not thought about it to tell the truth.

Makes sense.
You should give kickstarter a go. I started with a basic wizard's tower I made for Sellswords and Spellslingers and moved on from there. As a hobby business I'm adding an extra 2/3 of my salary income just from tinkering around at nights and weekends with something I would likely be doing anyway (to a lesser degree though)

Couple questions for you if you'd be so kind.

Can the printer sit on a desk in my office or does it need a room with outside ventilation?

Roughly what's the filament cost to print a "normal" 18 x 18 x 18cm building?

Thanks much as I'm seriously considering buying a printer.

You shouldn't need ventilation if you are printing PLA. ABS would possibly need ventilation but just go PLA plastic. I buy filamnet for about $NZ30 a kg. The 18x18x18 building is a bit tricky as there are a huge amount of factors involved in that in regards to wall thickness interior walls, etc, but I would say maybe around 300g to 600g? The image below is about 600g but the dimensions are about 210x210x120 that is without supports (this one is modular so would usually be printed in sections).
Title: Re: My 3D Printing Adventure
Post by: Hami on June 28, 2020, 10:07:39 PM
I have my printer on a table in a room, ventilation is not key if using PLA (which I use). If you have a draft caused by ventilation it could cause the corners to lift (as i have found out).

As Beefcake said there is a lot of different things that effect how much filament is used, supports, wall thickness, detailing etc and what layer size and infill % you use.

once you get the hang of it all it becomes fairly easy to use.

As for costing of PLA thats depends on what type etc you use. You are able to buy cheap PLA but sometimes it doesn't print well and may causes clogs etc.

After speaking to my Dad over the phone and WhatsApp video, he was telling me about how is King Arthur Game was coming along nicely and that he found an old Airfix Roman fort. Sadly this old fort had seen some better days, some parts where missing and more importantly it was the wrong scale for his game.

So I thought I would help him out, after sitting down and reading about the Roman Mile Forts online and in books I come up with the plan of a small(ish) fort with two gates, one being a tower entrance and other just a normal gated entrance.

I designed a few different stone work for the fort and my old man picked the one that he liked and thought would look best for his games (and more useable in different periods or something knowing him).

anyway here is what my Dad received this weekend as something to keep him going over this lockdown period.

I was asked to design and print a Train Station for someone, this is the project in the design phase and since these photos where taken I have done some work to the roof sections and added on some ramps at either end.

Stay tuned for photos of the project printed in 20mm (the scale that the guy was after).

When asked to design and print ruined buildings I alway like designing it in full then damaging it and adding the holes etc. it makes it easier to do, well it does in my head.

So after many many hours of printing the choice words when the printing started to fail etc, I have now finished and printed a ruined version of the Train station, it was printed in 20mm but the original design is 28mm.

I hope you guys like it!!
