Hi,
I'm looking for a good quality ahem..... solo *miniatures* Roleplay Game?
The game has to be played ahem..... solo :'( :)
The game must include mini's! Otherwise what's the point ??? :)
A dungeon crawl type affair would be fun.
What I will do first is buy a bunch of models, PC's, low level dungeon critters like gnolls, goblins, orcs, skellies drow etc
As would a Lord of the Rings type affair.....
No to internet/PC type games :-[

Hello!
Rangers of Shadow Deep! It's designed for solo play, great game!
-
Yes, Rangers is absolutely perfect and tons of fun. And if you have a decent Fantasy collection, you wouldn't need any miniatures. Just buy the PDF (or book) and have fun!
-
Another vote for Ranger of Shadow Deep -- Also, look for the 2nd Edition Rules for Frostgrave in June which will have solo options.

I used to..... sold them all many moons ago :'(
I'll be starting from scratch but I love painting and a wee little side project to go with my historical Late Med stuff would be a delight :)
It also, of course harks back to bygone days 8)

I too have had great fun with Rangers of Shadow Deep. It's a great system with an evocative setting, but could easily be tweaked to fit any other very easily.

Thanks guys.
Is there any conceptual difference between the Rangers of Shadow Deep V.1 and the deluxe edition? What is the difference (I've seen neither)
-
It does sound like exactly the game you want!
The deluxe edition is a new printed edition, at first the game was only available on print on demand. There is a little rules update included, but I believe that can be gotten for free in pdf form.

Thanks, I think I'd rather have something tangible like the book.

I bought the PDF when it first came out and had it spiral bound at a local copyshop. Wasn't that expensive and works really well for gaming.
And for miniatures you can do whatever you like. You can make it in the style of Lord of the Rings, using Orcs as the Gnolls. Or a Dark Souls versions. Or Pathfinder. Or...
There are people who play the game in a Star Wars setting! Choose whatever miniature you want for a profile and just have fun. For me that's the coolest thing in the game. Joe offers a terrific rules set with great scenarios and leaves a lot for you to fill in however you like.

Thanks for that- it sounds like the perfect set of rules if it can easily be tailored to suit my needs. 8)

You might want to check out Spellslingers and Sellswords. It's a solo miniatures game with great rpg elements.
-
I know Rangers is popular, but I just don't get why it is particularly a solo or cooperative game. The mechanics look like they would work for a competitive game just as well.
I think Sellswords and Spellslingers is more of a pure solo game but that is just my preference.
Rangers has a well thought out campaign and scenarios.
Both are fun.

Five Leagues from the Borderlands is a solo game, with miniatures, and a lot of an RPG element.
Use any minis you want, good mechanics, really fun campaign play. It uses a small number of figures per side.
I really love the first version, I rank it in my top ten favorites.
I haven't tried the second edition.

Dungeon Scum is a dungeon delve game by the same company, and seems similar, though I have not played that one at all.

Thanks for the extra input guys, for some reason my LAF notifications for this thread weren't coming through.
Please keep up the suggestions. I have lots to explore :)
-
Another one Rangers os Shadowdeep
I use my Picts as Gnolls, & used Vikings as Cultists. I have got Undead though so that helps, plastic spiders & flies can be bought from eBay dirt cheap

Seems you're in a similar situation to me. I too am coming back to fantasy gaming after a long sabbatical. I bought the deluxe edition and the main difference is that it incorporates a few newer rules and also includes a full (9 game) adventure. Like Malebolgia, I got the pdf and got it printed and bound at a local joint but I might get the actual printed book too.
-
OK, so I'm going to be at Vappa on Sunday.
Does anyone know of anyone who will be carrying Rangers of Shadow Deep?
If I've got enough dosh left after filling out my list I might just buy a copy and some mini's too.
I'm thinking Dave Thomas ???
-
Caliver will be there too, they may well have it.
If I see someone clutching s copy and looking indecisive, I'll say hello. :)

Burning Light yeah? That was included in the old pdf as well.

An option for quick dungeon crawls is Four Against Darkness, available from Ganesha Games (http://www.ganeshagames.net/product_info.php?cPath=1_55&products_id=330 (http://www.ganeshagames.net/product_info.php?cPath=1_55&products_id=330))
It is not a miniatures game, but you could easily use miniatures if you like.
I have a short overview on my blog (https://warwellwg.blogspot.com/2016/04/fun-against-darkness.html (https://warwellwg.blogspot.com/2016/04/fun-against-darkness.html))

Many of the D&D boardgames are playable solo. I picked up Temple of Elemental Evil specifically for an easy way to get into a solo dungeon crawl. I've only played a few games so far, but have enjoyed it. Everything you need comes in the box

I prefer to buy my own mini's and paint them myself- it's a big part of the hobby for me. I expect I could do that anyway.

One solo fantasy game that hasn't been mentioned is Studium CMLXV's "Blood on the Blade" which also offers an add-on "Blood in the Dungeon.
The main rules are currently available free at https://www.wargamevault.com/product/239683/Solo-Skrimish-Rules-Collection-BUNDLE (https://www.wargamevault.com/product/239683/Solo-Skrimish-Rules-Collection-BUNDLE) along with the sci-fi version.
I've read through the rules and like them though I haven't actually had a game yet.
-
I’ll endorse Five Leagues - it has a built in campaign structure and will create random missions. Your followers can be fun too - my party had a wolfblood (who seemed useful but was cut down on turn 1), a merchant with a duelling sword, a wandering nomad archer (who also got chopped) and a loyal but deranged retainer.

Thanks guys.

The only differences are the slightly updated rules (which are available as a free PDF download) & the updated spell list from Temple of Madness as well as new maps etc & a nice shiny new cover :D

You can also check out Two Hour Dungeon Crawl:

A lot depends on your style of solo gaming; Five Leagues and Dungeon Scum both have quite a lot of random tables for stuff. Rangers of Shadowdeep is, I think, more scenario driven and has less stuff to help you create a game on the fly. It does of course come with ready written scenarios
-
I've had a lot of fun with Sellswords and Spellslingers from Ganesha Games, bot solo and cooperative. It might just be the way I play it, but it has the feel of the D&D bashes I remember from by teens with out all the rules and tables.
It's really a tabletop miniatures game for roleplayers.

Blimey! Now i'm getting even more confused lol
So, Rangers of Shadowdeep is not a role play game? I like the idea of randomness so maybe Five Leagues and Dungeon Scum are more up my street? Basically I'm looking for a game that I can play, paint and enjoy on my own that has strong hints of AD&D. other Non Player Characters and has scenarios such as, my favourite AD&D scenario, The Temple of Elemental Evil.
I hope that's a little clearer(?)
-
Well, Rangers is d20 based if that’s a factor
You could look at “Scarlet Heroes” which has an engine that lets you play a very D&D style game solo. By Sine Nomine Games and there is a free basic version available.
5L focuses on reducing “threats” by fighting monsters, bandits etc. One successful scrap reduces the level by one, that sort of thing. Scum is similar but more dungeon based.
It’s a tough one. If D&D was your thing, look at Scarlet Heroes.

The minis are included, but unpainted. I still need to paint mine, though.... :?
Usually I'm the same way (and have also picked up Rangers and Sellswords as solo options for that purpose) but the D&D boardgame was such a simple entry to solo dungeoncrawling...
I am setting up a trial solo game of Dragon Rampant for myself tonight. I will "play" both sides, but counting on activation rolls and having a loosely "programmed” game plan for one side.

The Temple of Elemental Evil that I'm referring to is just a scenario book mean't to be run by a DM.
Is there a new module that can be played solo?

Slightly off-topic, but have you looked at the same author's The Men Who Would Be Kings? It includes "Mr Babbage", an engine for solo play (or for several players against the engine). I think TMWWBK is a superior refinement of some of the Dragon Rampant principles in any case - well worth a look.

This is the one I was talking about: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/172220/dungeons-dragons-temple-elemental-evil-board-game
But I've played the old AD&D module too - a very long time ago! :D
Hobgoblin, thanks, I will look into that game.

OK, now that sounds interesting. Man, I love this place.
