I've got an ongoing project to collect/paint miniatures and scenery required for a campaign across the Old World. I've been running a mini-campaign with my partner in the style of the computer game Dark Omen. She has a small Wood Elf army, and during games she can do secondary missions to get more money or troops, and after battle can use the money to upgrade her existing troops, or replace dead soldiers.
I'm using Warhammer Fantasy Battle 5th Edition rules, with some modifications for more RPG like behaviour. I've been using LD scores for most social interaction tests, and a D10 used against the core stats can be used for other activities (with modifiers for difficulty of the test, as in WFRP).
I thought it'd be nice to document the project & battles in a thread. So I'll update this as I paint new models for the various creatures and factions that can be encountered, and will do AARs each time I get a game in.
I also sometimes post about it on my blog:
https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/
Attached are some pictures of one of my armies which is nearly completed - Orcs & Goblins.
-
Hey great looking army man! Was Dark Omen the one after Shadow of the Horned rat? Can they still be played? I never finished it I think ... 😭
-
Thanks! I'm gonna go through all my armies in the next few days and take pics of them so I have a record of my progress.
Yeah that's right, Dark Omen is a direct sequel to Shadow of the Horned Rat. I actually prefer the cutscenes in Shadow of the Horned Rat, they've got that brightly coloured Middlehammer charm to them.
They can both be played still, I think I had to change some DLLs to get Dark Omen working (there's a guide online). And Shadow of the Horned Rat is available on GOG and can be played with no hassle at all.

Finally painted Aenur after owning him for about 20 years. I was gonna try some fancy freehand on the inside of his cloak but got scared I'd mess it up and just went for mud stains on the bottom instead.
As you can see in the final picture there's pretty heavy mold line on the model. I tried smoothing it out a bit by scraping the metal but it didn't really help much. In retrospect I should've used some green stuff to hide the seam.
-
Looking forward to seeing this thread and your blog as it develops mate!
Aenur is looking great!
-
Looks great!
Only saw the mold line because you said it, too busy watching the weapon and the face to notice it.
-
Thanks for the comments! I also managed to finish my first Nighthaunt last night. I know it isn't strictly Old World but I think the new ghost guys are great models and fit in well with Undead armies (I might use them as spirit hosts in games). Also that symbol on the gravestone looks very much like Vampire Counts heraldry to me!

New blog post today. I wrote up a little battle report of a game I played in my current Old World campaign with my girlfriend.
https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2020/02/warhammer-fantasy-campaign-mission-4.html?m=1
It was a good game! I think I made it a bit easy, but there aren't many options of things to do in Warhammer Fantasy unfortunately. Maybe I should get the Mordheim rules and use them for skirmish/RPG style sessions like this?
Or I could just go full RPG for these types of mission and use WFRP 4E? I'll have to have a think about it.
Some pics attached but please check the blog for the full scenario report.

My wife and I really like the Nighthaught figures, a great sense of dramatic ethereal movement. And your painting of the chainrasp is spot on.
As for the battle report.... brilliant! Exactly the kind of thing I want to get going regularly with my wife. I an green with envy! You continue to inspire and motivate me, thanks mate!
-
Good stuff, thanks for sharing.
-
Great looking board mate! Very immersive, love the squabbling gobbos!
On side note I went on GOG to find shadow of the horned rat and there were comments that said it crashed so I found a "free" one which was supposed to be the GOG. It installed properly and the intro was fine but it crashed before the first fight so I didn't buy it.
-
Cheers all! The board tiles are from Pedion and they're great, I can't take credit for those unfortunately.

Yeah they're definitely the best models GW has produced in a long time. They're really easy to paint as well. I'm looking forward to getting the other 9 chainrasps painted up and out on the field, I think they'll look great in contrast to my spooky skeletons and gory zombies.
I've got SotHR installed on my PC at home. I'll have a look tonight and see if I've applied any special compatibility settings or something. I suspect it might be set to 'Run in Windows 95 mode' or something. I'm pretty sure I played it in a tiny 640x480 window at any rate, so I think that was probably a thing you need to do to get it working.

Ah ok, I'll keep that in mind and give it another go when i have free time! And yeah these chainrasps are cool models, a lot of the GW ethereal stuff looks great!

I bought Sayl the Faithless and his Chaos Spawn pet 'Nightmaw' last year at Warhammer World. I finally got around to painting Nightmaw over the weekend. It's my first Forgeworld model I've painted and I'm super impressed with the level of detail! I think I might have to get some more models next time I'm in Nottingham...
-
I wrote a post on my blog recently about my Bretonnian army and my beginnings with Warhammer.
http://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2020/03/my-history-of-warhammer-and-bretonnians.html?m=1
Here's some pictures from the blog post (and the current state of my army).
-
Great stuff! Keep bringing it on mate, inspirational in these troubled times.
-
Thanks!
I'm planning on writing up AARs of the first 3 missions of the current Old World campaign soon (I have pictures of them all) so look out for those in the near future.
-
New blog post with a little sort-of AAR of a game of Castle Ravenloft. Not strictly Warhammer or even a miniatures wargame. But it's got miniatures and I want to show off the Dwarven Forge tiles I've painted so I'm counting it!

-
I've been a bit lax with my blog posts unfortunately (I blame COVID-19 - working from home has made me want to spend my spare time away from my PC!), but Grumpy Gnome's blog posts have inspired me out of my torpor!
Mission 4 AAR is already on the blog, but I realised I should probably do a write-up of Missions 1-3 as well. I'd previously written mini-reports on various Facebook groups but it's not really the same as writing a proper one on my blog, so I thought I'd revisit the old photos and see what I can piece together and remember the narrative of the battle.
Here's Mission 1:
https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2020/05/warhammer-fantasy-campaign-mission-1.html

fine looking game.
and love your tile'd Ravenloft game :-*
-
Torpor begone!
Great idea to summarize things together here.
Facebook be gone!
As always your stuff looks great mate. You continue to inspire me.
I have spoken.
-
Thanks for the nice comments! It's always good to hear that someone enjoys this waffle I'm spewing out.
Mission 2 AAR is up, and it's extra waffley! Got carried away with the narrative a bit in this writeup.
https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2020/06/warhammer-fantasy-campaign-mission-2.html?m=1 (https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2020/06/warhammer-fantasy-campaign-mission-2.html?m=1)
-
Always beautiful tables! And that fox is so cute ^.^ (or is it a red panda?)
-
Excellent stuff, that's a really nice set up and some great models
-
Great write up mate! If that is waffle... give me another helping with some maple syrup!
-
Thanks! I'll be doing another little AAR soon, but in the meantime here's a little painting post:
http://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2020/06/soldiers-of-empire-lukes-aps-commission.html?m=1 (http://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2020/06/soldiers-of-empire-lukes-aps-commission.html?m=1)
I also do a mini-review of Lukes APS as I got some Empire miniatures commission painted.
-
Nice to read a review of commission painter from someone I trust. And I am glad he did a good job for you! I can see the advantage of getting some commission work done but I am too chea... er... thrifty. I hope some of the bits I sent over come in handy at some point!
-
Wrote up a little battle report of my burgeoning Empire army's first game. Not as much narrative as I'm going for with the main campaign, but it was only a quick 50 minute game so I wasn't paying too much attention to world-building (the board's quite lacking in detail compared to most of my setups - I wanted it to just be a quick evening game).
Check it out here:

Haven't posted in a while, so here's a quick update on my various projects:
https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2020/07/witch-finder-grumman-zombies.html
-
Good to see you posting mate!
Thanks for the hat tip, I am glad you are enjoying the Wood Elves.
That Witch Hunter looks great!
-
There's a little banner telling me off for not posting in over 120 days, oops! Now I feel bad.
Anyway, here's a new blog post with a (sort of) battle report of the first mission in a new campaign I'm playing with my partner:
https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2021/02/nemesis-crown-turn-1-battle-1-empire-vs.html
We played an Empire vs. Orcs & Goblins game. I was playing Empire and Laura was Orcs & Goblins. I won, but it was a close call! We're doing a map/territory based campaign so no the Empire controls 2 regions out of 9. The winner will be whomever controls all 9 regions. There's an exponential increase in power so hopefully it won't end in a stalemate that takes forever, but we'll see.
Here's some pics from the blog post:
-
Good to see you gaming and blogging again mate! Looks like it was a fun game. Good idea on the campaign.
-
Lovely seeing these old school miniatures being used. I’m repurposing my empire and orc armies for Saga age of magic.
-
Great stuff, I hadn't seen your thread before.
Are you still using whfb 5th edition?
Very evocative games, your terrain is great. The warhammer old world has such a nostalgic pull for me, I worry about the release of the Forgeworld old world thing, it could end up quite expensive.
-
Thanks for the comments everyone!

Yeah I mostly play WHFB 5th edition - it's what I started with when I got into miniatures back in the 90s and it feels the most 'old world' to me because I have fond memories of it being brightly coloured and filled with hopeful characters.
I like quite a lot of the later stuff too, but the narrative started to spiral into a mess of grim miserable people being mean to each other endlessly which I find a bit boring. When getting back into Warhammer Fantasy I decided to stick to the rules & background books where good guys are good and try to help each other and the land of Bretonnia is more Excalibur than Monty Python.
I'm tentatively excited about the new Old World that GW are doing - but then I've always been a bit of a foolish idealist. My main concern is that they'll release the entire thing in a new huge scale and so it'll be completely incompatible with any of my current models. This is what they did with the new Necromunda so I need to reign in my excitement a bit.
-
I quite like thinking of Bretonnia in the sense of the movie Excalibur and dislike the idea that the Lady in the Lake is merely a manipulative Wood Elf using Bretonnians as a cat’s paw. GW really went off track in my opinion with their oppressive, omnipresent grimdark.
Whilst I find it interesting that the Old World is making a comeback, I fear you may be right on figure scale. And I think that the stuff we are seeing in the Total War pc game series is going to be foreshadowing some of what is coming, ie Kislev and Cathay. I am pretty sure the success of the Total War Games has been what is really behind the return of the Old World. Although I suppose rank and flank games that are doing well, ie Kings of War, Oathmark, 9th Age have their share in the return as well.

Yeah the fiction definitely seemed to nosedive after a while. I like a bit of grit with my fantasy, but a little goes a long way. Making everything miserable and everyone deceitful and out to get each other doesn't allow you to like anyone in that world. The Lady of the Lake 'reveal' was just one in a long list of terrible decisions that was made about the Old World. Did you know they also had the Dark Elves end up being 'good guys all along' in the end - even though they'd spent the past 4000 years raiding, butchering and torturing innocent people?
I was telling Laura about The End Times fiction last night and she said it sounded like someone that really hated classic fantasy just wanted to tear it apart for their own satisfaction. Sorta reminds me of The Last Jedi...
I saw the trailer for TW:WH3 and I liked it. I'm really enjoying the Total War: Warhammer series and I'm glad we'll be getting to play as our favourite Polish-Lithuanians in the 'not-Earth' that is The Old World. I'm certain that the Old World revival will include Cathay (and it's already confirmed to have Kislev), which is interesting, because it's also more or less confirmed to have Bretonnians, Wood Elves & 3 factions of Empire as well - so it looks like it'll have a broader scope than I initially thought it would.
The thing that's allowing me to hold out hope that they won't change the scale is that they still have a lot of Fantasy models available - and presumably some masters of OOP molds. I feel like it would be a good driver of sales for the existing Empire, Wood Elf & Dwarf models (or Freeguild, Sylvaneth & Dispossessed Duardin as they're now called) if they were to keep it to the same scale as old WHFB.
-
No, I was not aware of the Dark Elves “good guy” reveal. I was pretty disgusted with the End Times fluff so did not read all of it.
I agree completely with the comparison between End Times and Last Jedi.
Cathy is already confirmed for the pc game so I am pretty sure we will see it on tabletops, same as Kislev.

Next battle report in my Nemesis Campaign is up! This time it's Wood Elves vs. Bretonnia.
https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2021/03/nemesis-crown-turn-1-battle-2-bretonnia.html (https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2021/03/nemesis-crown-turn-1-battle-2-bretonnia.html)
I'm going to start a Mordheim skirmish campaign soon as well, so watch this space for some grubby street fights in the future.
-
Great stuff mate! For the Lady!
Thanks for the shoutout. Sorry I can not leave a comment on your blog... I seem to not have an appropriate account in order to do so.
Keep having fun and sharing it with us all!
-
New battle about to be played today! Bretonnia vs. Vampire Counts!
Can Sir Tristan redeem his honour by saving the good people of this farmstead or will the evil forces of Count Gulthias capture them for his own nefarious purpose?
-
For the Lady! Wishing good fortune to Sir Tristan.
-
The blog post is done. It was a very tense battle in places, but it was good fun! It's always enjoyable to have a narrative objective to work towards rather than just 'kill each other'.

A brilliant read! Great job on the blog. Thanks for the nod. Looking forward to more!

Thanks! Those skeleton spearmen are lovely - you did a great paintjob on them.
I'm gonna have to finally paint the rest of my men-at-arms spearmen now that I've added another 5 to the army. Doing these battles is a good way to keep up the hobby motivation at least.
-
A very enjoyable read! Good to see the heroics at the exact last moment.
I like following your campaign. Hope to see you follow it through to the end!

Thanks for the comments! Yeah it's gonna be quite a few battles, but I'm hoping the escalation of power in the armies will mean that it drifts steadily towards a conclusion. If territories keep swapping back and forth that would get quite frustrating, but we can adjust for that if needs be. Personally I'm hoping I'll eliminate the Greenskin army in the next Empire vs. Greenskin battle so that there's less things to worry about.
Unfortunately my Empire army will probably have to fight my Bretonnian army at some point - I don't know who I'll be rooting for!
As long as I finally win a battle against Laura's Wood Elves at some point in the campaign I'll be happy.
-
Thanks for the compliment mate!
-
New blog post up - the fourth battle in my Nemesis Crown campaign! This time the Vampire Counts attempt to kidnap an innocent potato-selling merchant and the Wood Elves intervene for slightly selfish yet unintentionally heroic reasons!
https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2021/04/nemesis-crown-turn-2-battle-2-wood.html (https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2021/04/nemesis-crown-turn-2-battle-2-wood.html)

Another great battle report! Seems it was a close run thing.
I am glad you like the terrain so much, thanks for the nod!
-
Cool read! Sic Semper Vampirus!
-
New blog post. Not really Old World related this time unfortunately. Instead I ramble incessantly about the oft-sighted expression "keep politics out of my game!".
https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2021/05/politics-and-morality-in-wargames.html (https://darkspacemessages.blogspot.com/2021/05/politics-and-morality-in-wargames.html)
Thoughts and opinions are welcome!

Very good post and I agree with pretty much all, but I don't think discussing it will be within the rules of the forum.

Thanks for the comment! I just had a re-read of the rules and I don't think it's going against any of them as I'm not talking about actual politics or contemporary events, simply the 'political correctness' of wargames in general.
I'm happy to remove the post if it's deemed inappropriate though.
-
Unsurprisingly, I agree with your blog post mate. Unfortunately I do not have the ability to reply there.
-
No political discussion has actually taken place so I don't mind the original post. Thank you all for your awareness on this issue and for not commenting here on political matters.
-
New blog update with a progress report. No battles have taken place recently so I thought I'd take some pictures of things I've been working on recently.

After re-reading my thread it looks like I already posted pictures of Aenur here, oops! I guess he can have a moment in the spotlight again - and at least he exists on my blog now too.
-
Great stuff mate, I particularly like the peasants!
And thanks for the nod, glad to see you putting things into use. You need a tinker gnome….
-
Nice work - could you give us a run down on the miniatures and/or parts used please. I too especially like the peasants.
-

They're a great little kit - I'm looking forward to painting them too. I think Citadel contrast paints will do a really good job on the tunics.
Yeah, thanks for all the things you've sent me! A lot of them have been sitting around in my 'to-build' box waiting for use. Turns out there were some perfect parts for the Grudgebringer cavalry I've been planning.
Nice work - could you give us a run down on the miniatures and/or parts used please. I too especially like the peasants.
Thanks!
The Grudgebringer cavalry consists of:
Pistolier steeds
Pistolier legs & torsos
Empire State Troops sword & shield arms
The heads I believe are from the old Soldiers of the Empire box.
The round shields are from the latest Vampire Counts Skeletons box.
Morgan Bernhardt himself has arms from the old Soldiers of the Empire box from what I can tell (command options used to be metal, including the sword arm I've used). I think the shield is from the Knights of the Empire kit. I'm not sure where the head is from, I'm certain it's a Citadel piece (and almost certainly Empire), but I don't remember it so I'm not sure where it's from.
Morgan's cloak is a Pistolier cloak, but I've have to cut off the arm and gouge away the inside quite a lot to get it to fit. I think it looks okay though.
-
Very nice stuff!
-
It's been a while since I last updated, but I've finally done it!
It's also not actually Old World this time, but a Frostgrave warband with a Witcher theme. I have lots of Old World updates to show soon though.
