Title: Invasion! A 15mm project
Post by: Glasvandrare on February 27, 2020, 07:09:38 AM
I've recently decided to dip my toe into 15mm gaming, having played almost every other scale previously (6, 10, 28/32 and 56...).

The tipping point was the new War Force Reserve infantry from Khurasan, promting me to order some when they went up for pre order.

As 15mm is very much DIY, I have been sketching a project to get some use out of them, which I've tentatively named Invasion!

Fluffvise it will be a mix of Starship Troopers and the Expanse, with some elements from Halo spliced in here and there.

I've already settled on three factions:

CDF will be a mix of lightly armoured infantry, currently mostly from PMC26XXs series of NSL.

MMC are primarily Khurasan WFR with Corsair Suit support, but some drones will be added, from GZG or other vendor.

For the Weavers I'll be tapping into my pile of shame, and re use my Relthoza from the OOP Planetfall line. Nominally 10 mm they are big enough to jump scale quite easily.

Thanks!

Rules wise, I have been looking at a lot of options, from Gruntz, to Trilaterum, to dusting off Halo Ground Command.
I finally have two candidates, either our local indie  F28  (https://alphaspel.se/2622-f28/) rule set, with some 15mm mods, including things stolen from HGC,, or Victory Decision: Future Combat. I will evaluate both, together with my regular partner in crime...

Here is a quick shot of my first (almost) finished platoon, a Relthoza Recon Helix.
These will be statted as Power Armour of some sort, specced for close combat with short range guns for softening up their victims on the way in.

I've got one more large walker to ink, some Drop Pods to paint, and the bases needs some polishing, but more or less finished...

I keep forgetting that these need to be treated differently than 28 mm minis, but it's hard...

I've all but finished my proof of concept for my Martian Marines, though. By no means flawless, but good enough as first attempt at 15mm...

Yes, the details on the models are really crisp, one can't help but to paint them...

I've actually managed to complete two pairs of Grenadiers as well (almost, bases and dust to finish off):

I've got to say I'm really taking a liking to painting 15mm, you can get great results with quite little effort. T
he Battlesuit was painted as a test model, trying to apply the same scheme as the infantry, but turned out quite ok.

First actual Marine platoon finished!

This would be a bit heavier than a normal outfit, with three squads of Grenadiers instead of mixing Grenadiers with regular Marines, but shipping has not been smooth lately...

Great work,
Welcome to the 15mm scifi world.
With the amount of detail 15mm have nowadays they have become the way to go as regards to cost, space and the time needed to paint them.
Keep it up

I've come across a new rule set, that had quickly jumped up to the top of my candidates, so I wrote a bit about it.

Interesting write up. So From Ashes is not a skirmish game, but more squad based?
Title: Re: Invasion! A 15mm project
Post by: Glasvandrare on July 16, 2020, 09:15:30 PM
Yes, definitely. The basic Unit is a multi base, with 3 infantrymen to a base being common (but 2 and 4 models to a base happens).
A squad range from a single Unit (in the case of command Squads) to hordes of 10+ Units (Dominion Vanguard).
The number of individual models are abstracted away by having one stat line per Unit, where there isn't always a 1:1 mapping between a stat and a single model (e.g a Unit of Pathfinders has 2 shots with their rifles, despite 3 infantrymen being modeled on the base).

A basic game of 300 Req per side is about a Platoon with some support, so I'd call this a Platoon/Company level game.
It plays a little bit like Bolt Action/Gates of Antares, Epic Armageddon and Halo Ground Command got thrown into a blender, and the bits that floated to the top got put into these rules (which means it's right up my alley... )

Got a lot of figs that are muddier than they need to be, even after five years after making the switch.

Yes... Then again, they are similar enough to my old 10 mm that I can apply similar techniques, and these days it gets even easier now that there is a standard to follow with GWs Contrast Paints (Vallejo Inks worked well enough, albeit with a more limited selection).

I'll be trying out a 'contrast only' approach on my light infantry, see if  it works out; initial attempts seems promising.

I'm pushing forward, but with the 'rona delaying everything I've only recently gotten my latest delivery from Khurasan, ordered in early March (no shade on Jon, he's provided excellent service, sending out replacements as the first order got lost, it's just taken time).

I've got a second platoon in the works now, and who knows how far the rabbit hole of From Ashes I'll go. The models are really crisp...

No project is complete without some terrain, so to that end I've started some work on 15 mm sci fi desert buildings.

The basic kit comes from Amera, mounted on fibre board, and then filled with expanding foam to improve durability and adhesion to the base.

I've also added some sci fi elements from the Maelstrom's Edge terrain sprue, some of the elements work quite well in 15mm.

The bird is from https://acpgames.com/ (barely functioning homepage, the Facebook page is actually better).

He ran a KS five years ago to fund it, which went well, but after that has had little presence until this year.

The infantry is from Void Scar Miniatures, part of the From Ashes range.

Yep... There had been mention of a new one for a while, but it hasn't materialised.

I'd recommend traversing the blog part ( https://acpgames.com/topics/latest-news/ ) or the FB page ( https://facebook.com/acpgames/ ).

Orders are manual anyway... And make no mistake, it is open for business, I received this a few weeks ago.

End of the year round up:

Not too bad, even if I'm not anywhere near the more productive painters.

For the Martians:
One full platoon of Grenadiers, two Squads of Rifles, two Assault suits and one Recon, and two command units, with three Drop Pods to round out all off.

For the OpFor:

One unit of light infantry, one unit of medium, commanders and APC.

Thanks everyone!

Today I took the time to snap some decent shots with abundant lightning.

This is a group shot of the company so far, two platoons with some heavy support.
One platoon of Power Armour Rifles, and one with Grenadiers.

Air Support is all but finished, but needs a final coat of varnish.

Once my APCs turn up (ClearHorizon Pangolins) they are up next, but our so called MailNorth company has decided to waylay them in one pile or other...

A quick teaser for a battlereport (in progress).

The game was played with the F28 rule set, using custom army lists and 500 pts a side.

The scenario is from the F28 players guide, aimed at small forces intent on capturing terrain.

New playtest shots, this time from a game using the From Ashes rule set.
One side is made up of official Chosen Guard and Vanguard from the range, the other is a home brew with no official rules (because I want to use my Khurasan minis).

The game has a lot of potential, and a decent set of solo rules, which is very valuable these days.

Thanks all for the nice comments!

All the new 6ish mm shinies over the summer distracted me, but now I am back on track with this project.

Last week I even managed to get a solo playtest game in, using F28 with my own custom army lists.

Since F28 and Warpath are similar enough, I will probably end up stealing some ideas from the latter as well, but more on that later...

This will I've been stuck at home, and a bit under the weather due to catching COVID, but at least i managed to get started on my first 9 houses to speed paint, I firmly intend to spend less than one hour per house from start to finish.

Filled with expanding foam, cut and sanded. Then primed first with cheap rust effect, and then some old Army Painter khaki (to give some more texture to the plastic).

It is surprisingly effective.

However, if you mount it on a base first, make sure that you have enough "vents" for the foam, or you run the risk of bulging walls as the foam expands.

This time around I just dumped the foam in, and then cut the protruding part (a saw toothed bread knife is really good at this).

The quick and dirty terrain'project is getting somewhere!
Thanks to the magic that is sponging, I've managed to get busy of the first one third of my little village painted in relatively short time, all that remains are some doors (cut from remains of the plastic bases I use for multibases).

So far it seems that all 18 houses will be able to be completed with less than ten hours of working time...

How did you keep the expanding foam from warping the walls, pushing them outwards as it expands?  Thanks
