I use sketches as a way to note both an idea and models I've to build.I find it helpful as a tool to break down an object into parts that need to be built. As you draw a quick representation of the item you immediately only draw the parts you actually need to go ' Ah it's a lorry' .You don't need to get lost in detail.Until its 3D or you make a quick note on the sketch .The sketches just let you know for a lorry you only need four wheels ,a body ,a tarpaulin if you feeling clever. It sounds an over simplification. But its not we get overly concerned with the smallest details. For a lorry people start to worry about building chassis and cabs and so on.
Sketching soon lets you know you don't need a chassis as its not really something you see.If you don't see it you don't need it.
That's sort of roughly why I use sketches and would reccomend to people to try it it's not about how many thumbs you have it's .Your not drawing plans of project it's just a tool to help you minimize the risk of a project painting you into a corner .
Why a thread on it ? I've posted a couple of sketches on other thread as ways of quickly showing ideas. A Few people have asked to see more .It never occurred to me people would as they are simply just an every day work tool to me .
Once I said I would put more on the forum I found I was 71 photos in just merrily clicking away page after page. So enoughs, enough.
Here's a few and if it's something you'd like to see more of I've plenty of photographs lol
Or it would be much more interesting if you add some of your own ideas and planning methods
Mark.

A few more.
-
And a final round for now.
-
Cheers for posting these, it's something I should maybe try when starting something, instead of the usual have an idea and wing it along the way. :D
-
The concept drawing for the British Walker and the actual model for it look amazing.
It’s always amazing to see how someone’s initial sketches and ideas actually makes it to a finished article.
-
Thanks for posting. Fascinating stuff. I would be happy with either
doing the 'doodles' OR making the models (if they were kits).
Tick V.G. young man.
-
Cheers Chaps,
Here's a couple more that are kits ;)
-
A few Dark Age,and Marsh themed concepts.
-
Great stuff :o
-
Talent. Love it
-
Awesome!
-
Wowzers! I think that I would like the sketches as much as the very nice final products!

Magnificent work!

I love sketches ... don't know what it is about them ...
-
Cheers Chaps,
Here's just a few more as I've promised to make the top one in another thread.

The Roman town sketches are amazing, also like the command post in the last sketch.
-
Yep, the Roman town grabbed me too as I have just had my first game of Gangs of Rome. Have been collecting Roman civilians and town type buildings since the idea of Vox Populi was floated but that set never got off the ground.
The Roman town sketches are amazing, also like the command post in the last sketch.
-
Ewan I did a version of it many moons ago .Which went to live in Australia .
Poiter50,
Have you come across Iron gate scenery. I picked a set up at York.
They are forum members. But not particularly active . I did mention to them at the show they needed to be more active on here Rather than just to push product.
They do have some useful scene setting items most are aimed at being compatible with the Sarissa stuff.
It's 90% printed stuff. Not always great but useful none the less.
-
Yes, I have some of their pots and amphorae, must check them for more of the newer Roman pieces.
I'm visiting the UK in Oct, so I might have to pick some up.
-
I would happily frame any of those sketch pages and put them on display. Handwriting lovely in its graphical quality too.
very envious of such ability.
-
I'm glad you chaps like them. I've added a few more for the fun of it.
I've not really done any thing arty other than working sketches since I taught myself to sketch in the 90's. But if your interested there's a few more arty sketches stuck in random places in the old caravan(hense the tin shed) I use as a workshop. They'll going when the caravan gets replaced later this year.
Let me know and I'll take some pictures.
Mark.

Oh, we are interested! lol I like these even more knowing that you are self taught.

Fantastic looking sketches - thank you for sharing them and the models.

I've no idea if this'll translate well in a photograph. Here's one if memory serves I doodled it over a couple of nightshifts as a student nurse.(secure ward's are pretty dull on a night :D)
-
That is nice.
-
:o
Epic!
-
lol I wouldn't go that far.
As I mentioned they are genuinely just plonked round my workshop.
-
great drawings :-* :-* :-*
-
quality crosshatching ;)
seriously - you've got real ability / talent.
-
This is a fantastic thread. Thanks for sharing your work.
-
How cool is that!
Nice artwork! :-*
-
Excellent thread. I really enjoy seeing process. Really cool stuff!!!!
-
Beautiful work :-*
It’s probably me,I sense a melancholia with some of your work?
-
Thanks Chaps .
I'll pop a few more on just for the hell of it tomorrow (admittedly I've got to check what I've already posted so I duplicate pictures.)
It's quite a perceptive observation. I've worn several hats before picking up clay. Each has had some pretty grim moments .Doddling was something I started doing to avoid the history lessons by being too knackered to awoken by them.
Plus working nightshifts helped.Clay pushing has sort of replaced doodling. It's now just a way of working out and noting down idea's.
I don't think I've that many sketches left from back then.As I tended just to throw them away .I seem to remember a weird stage of making book marks for people (found a laminating machine in the duty room one night.)
I'll see if I can find a few more sketches whilst I'm photographing the work sketches. As I think there might be a few in with my webbing . I think that's were most things from that time got dumped or shoved once the kids joined cadets.

That would be wonderful.
And good explanation, it suggests, and I believe it to be true havi g seen your work that you have a personal style; my old art lecturer always said that there was no point being a good draftsman when you lack style. However this can be learned thing as an artist gains more confidence.
-
As promised heres a few I found in the box.
-
There's a few more than I thought.
Including an old desgin note from my brief time at GW.
-
Plus a few more from my note books.
-
very very nice sketches !
-
Thanks for sharing these :)
-
You even make little bits of scenery, e.g.the water trough, interesting.
Long may you continue.
I feel I should now read the whole story of 'The Jester & the rat'.
-
Those drawings are splendid, the black & white line drawings remind me very strongly of early GW artists - Pete Knifton (the demon) and Ian Miller (the townscape).
Possibly my favourite era of fantasy art, that... Nice one. :)
-
I have loads of sketches, but I am no artist, but hey help me plan a build.
Your stuff is really good, I am even inspired to "borrow" a few ideas.
-
Here's a couple more bits and bob's. Including another jester one which has been found by mold /damp ( workshop is leaking like mad.)
-
Cheers one and all.
Coronassan,
Not every sketch is pretty here's a few on handmade paper it's like trying to draw on kitchen roll ::).
Feel free to plonk some of your idea's on here .As idea's and people's process are far more interesting (to me anyway.)
JollyBob,
I'll have to go look up these chaps up .But thank you none the less lol.
Has been there's a mundane bicycle one just for you ;)
-
Well, I don't know how you do it, but that circular pic of the boat reminds me of Rodney Matthews as well.
It's like a greatest hits tribute show in your shed! lol
-
Awesome :D
-
What a thing of beauty!
-
Fantastic sketches and amazing 3d creations, really nice to see the old Bulldog pellet tin as well! I still have some of those for plinking.
