Hi guys,
much time since my last post having had my first daughter... :-*
In my little free time I decided to go with an historical skirmish game. I choose Mortal Gods since it's simpler (I'll play mostly with my wife) and needs less minis than CoS (without speaking about the sarissa affair... lol).
I'll do it in 15mm basing the figures on 2 euro cent coins and so I'll built my own movement bases...
I'm going to do all 4 armies (Athenians, Spartans, Thracians and Persians) and the Mythological version, when I'll got my rewards as KS backer (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/footsore/mortal-gods-mythic-by-footsore?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=footsore).
Here some pics of my first warriors...
3 seers, 6 thracian peltasts, 4 archers, 4 slingers and 3 persian archers.
These are a mixture of brands: Chariot, donnington and Xyston. Bought some other Xystons and even if I'm a bit afraid with separated spears in a skirmish game I'll probably go almost totally with them... My first choice would have been Forged in Battle, but the packs are too big (and expensive) and my mail if it was possible to have only partial packs was totally ignored...
Lastly I have to mention new Z range Museum Miniatures: I like them very much and with skirt hoplite (adding a green stuff mantle) I'd like to do 300 style Spartan Hoplites :D

Hi Davide
How lucky you are! A little daughter and a wargaming wife! This is a gift from the gods if anything!
Philippe
-
Thank you very much Philippe!
Hoping for a wargaming daughter too lol
-
Made new bases.... Not perfect as original ones, but perfectly fitting my 2c bases :)
-
Going on with Thracians: here peltasts, warriors with romphaia, slingers (as leusteres) and the hero Dromichaites...

and more are coming...
-
Super impressive stuff. Love it :)
-
Thank you!
Here a mounted thrakian lochagos with 2 nobles as bodyguards:
-
Very cool!
-
Very nice project. :-* :-*
May i ask witch manufacturer are the thracians please?
I recognise some xyston but they arent all.
-
Thank you very much ;)
Thracians are all Xyston except for peltasts:
the 2 younger are MM:
https://www.magistermilitum.com/thr8-thracian-peltasts-or-javelinmen-with-shields.html
Other 4 are Donnington Original:
https://shop.ancient-modern.co.uk/thracians-33-c.asp
Dromichaites is Xyston from Greek generals with changed shield and added spear.
-
Thank you for the info. :)
-
Last 4 thracian slingers converted in 3 leusteres (throwing rocks by hand) and a healer with bandage....
-
Here the Lochagos and the musician/lyre player inspired to the thracian hero Orpheus (from a Roman 3rd century AD mosaic).
-
Lovely. :-* :-* :-*
-
Here 4 Museum Miniatures new "300 Spartans" just painted:
-
Hi,
Thanks for your kind comments.... We aim to please. Dave "Z"
-
While painting other Spartans, I decided to try something new:
building a temple....
Obviously a small one lol
I choose B, double dystile in antis... And doric...
Crepidoma already made, as the parts of elevation except for the roof...
-
The front side:
-
Nice start.
-
Every part is made (except the roof)...
The door of the cella is a little bit lopsided, but works.... lol
I think I'll paint the parts before assembling them.
-
"300" spartan phalanx completed!
-
The main part of my Greek double dystile in antis doric temple is completed...
views from the front and rear (opisthodomos), working wooden cellar door and basement for the cult statue inside...
-
Beautiful work on that temple!
This was my attempt from quite a few years ago. I'm still proud of it, but it's not on a par with yours.

-
Thank you ;)
I don't know, a part from the yet missing roof... mine is more hand-made /artisanal, your is maybe simpler but very clear (I love the porticus too) and could be used as illustration on a book...
-
Awesome work !!!
And love the idea of playing in 15s !
-
Thank you!
The roof is almost done except for pediments. I decided to create my own taking images from greek pottery and trying to make them homogenous. Already done the back pediment: since it's a Zeus temple, but I like goddess Athena, I choose the myth of the birth of Athena from Zeus head and I added in the corners symbols of the 2 gods (but consider everything is 7 x 1,9 cm).
-
Just happened on this thread and love it. That temple is very nice, and you've done great work on the 15s too.
-
The temple is looking great. :-* :-*
-
That roof's just lovely!
-
Thank you very much guys!!! ;)
Little changes to pediment B and the new pediment A, representing Zeus as Lord of Cosmic Order. So while He is striking with a lightning Typhon, behind him titans Prometeus and Atlas are suffering their punishments.
P.S. the pediments will be printed when I'll have access again to the printer, since I've not it at home...
-
Printing completed a bit lighter colored...
-
With last addictions (Skorylos noble of Thrace, 2 mounted toxotes and 2 mounted ippakontistes) thracian army is completed....
Very complete army, that I would have painted in many months if in 28mm ;)
Characters: 330 pt
Skorylos
Dromichaites
Lochagos
mounted lochagos
iatros
Mantis
Aoidos
Troups: 515 pt
4 sphendonetai
9 warriors
3 leusteres
2 mounted ippakontistes
2 mounted toxotes
2 mounted nobles
6 peltastai
Total 845 points for typical lochoi of 300-400 pt. Many choices to take :)
-
This is by far one of my favorite threads. Impressive work.
Perhaps I should give my old unfinished Jasón and the Argonauts project another try.
-
Hi and thank you very much Cacique Caribe!!!
Good historical game with the possibility of playing mythology too...
Here Jason and Argonauts...
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/footsore/mortal-gods-mythic-by-footsore/posts/2755579
Actually I've just painted the Minotaur ;)
and ordered other things....
-
That temple is very jolly.
-
About half spartan army is done: the 9 hoplites (that I modified adding leather straps as in "300"), the seer, 6 periokoi and 3 helots.
Now some reflections... Mortal Gods is a funny game with a strong historical flavour, but with some mistakes. In comparison Clash of Spears is much more realistic (a part the shame of the possibility of using pikes), but more complex (I'll play with my wife) and with more minis needed. So I choose the first.
Normally I'm a fanatic of historical accuracy (as much as possible), but with Spartans I made a different and aware choice. I wanted an army based on the movie "300".
So, I could never thank enough Dave of Museum Miniatures, I had firstly my accurate Hollywood hoplites and a part from the Xyson seer other minis will be all MM.
(The Lambda on shield appeared probably during the Peloponnesian War).
In Mortal Gods there are 3 level of spartan hoplites: light, heavy and krypteia. Since I'll use the same kind for all, (because in the movie are all similar and almost naked except cloack and pants: no armours for Spartans!!!) I'll differentiate them by using little coloured counters > different levels of trainig.
In the Game otherwise there are some historical mistakes:
-members of krypteia didn't go in battle as such, but were involved in secret mission mainly having the purpose of creating a kind of state of terror in the subject neighbours of the Spartans. So probably they didn't were armours...
-the differentiation of light and heavy hoplites is a real fact, but in different times. At the beginning of the Vth century all Spartans are heavy, but during the Peloponnesian war lost their armours and adopted pilos helmets for more mobility. So to be historically accurate you'll need at least 2 different spartan armies...
Regarding not-Spartiates soldiers sources spoke clearly about both periokoi and helots in battle. Their actual role and weaponry is widely debated... rear ranks light hoplites, light infantry, not-combatant... Nothing sure!
In Mortal Gods periokoi are like psiloi with javelins, while helots have swords and clubs. So I do, but my models have the shield too.
Then to create a "300" uniformity I used the blood red of Spartiates cloacks for perioikoi shields with a black Lambda, the opposite for helots.

Interesting paper about hoplitic warfare:

-
Here some (helots) archers and slingers....
-
As said in reply #34, today has arrived a BIG order useful for mythic expansion....
for only 1.99 $ lol but much more of shipping....
From Eagle-Gryphon Games https://www.eaglegames.net/category-s/34.htm
A sprue of many (20mm theoretically) minis for age of mythology board game.
I'll surely use the hydra, cyclops, Gorgon with bow. I could use centaurs with bow too, cavalry that is sized like xyston, Minotaur (but I have already it). While not mini chimairas and infantry that is true 20mm, except Herakles which big height seems reasonable to me....
I discovered those minis here:

Hi guys, very few hobby time since my wife is working from home and I'm almost full time engaged in taking care of my baby daughter and my home...
so after a while I have finished Spartans hoplites.
Only 5 characters left and the army will be done :)
-
Very nice. :-* :-*
And those 20mm sound interesting. :)
-
Thank you ;)
I've finally finished my Spartan Lochos. All minis are Museum Miniatures except for the Xyston mantis/seer.
-
I made some modifications to some characters:
Not to Leonidas....
Added pants to other general and changed head (transverse crest helmet) and arm position to a normal hoplite to make another one...
-
more significant changes with iatros/medic and musician. I picked up a baggage train follower and with a super fine line of green stuff made of his rod an Asklepios one.
More work on the naked musician...
-
Painted some plastic monsters:
-
Now Herakles and a new Minotaur. I think that the super cheap plastic one is better and more philologically correct than the beast man style ral partha one...
Greek minotaur is usually represented as a naked man, with only head and tail of a bull.
