Title: Vietnam, or an exercise in disciplined collecting.... first building pic
Post by: Vanvlak on March 17, 2020, 10:57:33 AM
To date I never felt the all-to-familiar urge to start a new project as far as the Vietnam war is concerned.
All that changed after I saw Full Metal Jacket on Netflix.
After taking a peek at a few threads on Vietnam here, and eyeing the available models, I settled for Empress Miniatures' 28mm models.

The disciplined bit of the exercise is in showing restraint, and instead of buying a few platoons worth of troops from both sides I limited myself to just 6 models. When these are painted, I'll move to the next set.

Seeing this is all because of Kubrik's film, the 6 I chose are the models in the range which represent some of the characters in the film.

As those guys badly were calling for heavy fire support which they never got in the last part of the film, I also bought an Ontos, which, with its presence on the Empress site, collapsed all semblance of discipline. Darn.

It had to be the Ontos - I had a love-hate relationship with models of this since when I had a couple of the 1970s vintage (I think) old soft plastic Atlantic models (an Italian range). The gun barrels would irritatingly keep falling off, but I had liked the idea of a small tank with all those gun barrels when I was that much younger, although I was a bit doubtful whether the thing really existed!
Seems little has changed, other than my 'lack of faith'.

As for setting the scene - 2' x 2' probably, so the Ontos would only be able to shoot OFF the board  ;D  - not to worry as I am more interested in the thing hanging around as an objective, scenery or for damaging the opposition's morale.
There's a rather large aquarium Buddha I might include as scenery, and I need to invest in palms.

I have also been bitten by Vietnam, with the acquisition of a big bag of the old Chiltern figures on a Bring and Buy at Hammerhead. As these will not fit with anything else out there, I can also pretend that I am disciplined because I am now immune to all the other Vietnam 28mm figures .
I do now need a Huey though  :-[

Vanvlak, did you mean Empress and not Victoria Miniatures? I couldn't find any Vietnam figs on that site.

Oh dear, very sorry about that - shame!
I suppose a self-inflicted punishment is required, 25 push ups - or better still, a second order, that's more likely to instill discipline, correct? Punishment for the error of my ways.

Anyway, they'll need some antagonists...

They haven't reached the LZ yet - but post is horribly slow at the moment, so no worries there.
I AM looking forward to them, though.  8)

Word of warning, though - I am not one of the great artists of this forum, and am incredibly slow!

The whole fun of this hobby is to enjoy it. If you are happy with what you do then thats nothing short of perfect. Never feel pressured to show your toys or embarrassed by what you may feel is not to the very highest standard. That is just not what this hobby should be about. It about fun. We all have far too many things to worry about at the moment. This hobby should be a relief from the pains of the world. Must go now and count the toilet rolls  8)

Top post Paul, I couldn’t agree more with the sentiment...

Wise words indeed - I too am counting toilet rolls.
Seriously though, that's a good explanation of the gist of the hobby. In spite of my shambolic and all to often weird projects, LAF is one place where I feel perfectly comfortable presenting pics of my stuff, as it fits your description well.

I look forward to see this spiral out of control. I started out with the same idea. But that is not where I ended up ;D

Never; I'll be strong.
Oh, did I mention I have two books coming in from Amazon and am watching that Netflix documentary on the Vietnam War?

Hueys.... mmm.
Did you know an Ontos could be transported, slung, under a Jolly Green Giant? :o
Hopefully no-one makes these to match 28mm scale.

Been there done that man. I am sorry to be the one to tell you mate. You are already on a slippery slope. Once you have watched the documentary, you will start watching platoon and Full Metal Jacket.  :D

There is no containing this conflict to a small skirmish.

My escalation for this period seems increasingly to mirror the real thing. Started with a relatively small-scale French Indo China engagement which was looking like it might be under control for a while, but things are getting badly out of hand now the US have arrived.
I suspect my timeline for completing this could echo the real thing too :-)

You are already on a slippery slope.

I'm a platoon of marines in (+ armour) after reading 'Hue 1968'. Just finished 'Danger Close' by Bob Grandin so Aussies & APCs are on the horizon. Also need more NVA/VC

I am guessing that is an M88.

Simon Dunstan (Vanguard 42) mentions M728s in use by 11th Armoured Cavalry.

The parallels between the conflict and the challenge of gaming it have also occurred to me, and no doubt to others. In fact I was just thinking that the present difficulties of maintaining hygiene are not totally dissimilar to those faced by troops in the bush, and particularly on LRRP. If I may be forgiven for raising a sensitive subject which is difficult to discuss without risking giving offence, I am referring specifically to the disposal of bodily waste, and the prevention of ailments relating to poor field hygiene.

While we all know the arrangements made to counter the dreaded crotch rot, I have no intention of proposing a survey on the merits of going commando.  I am, however, wondering whether any of the more knowledgeable members would like to share some effective field sanitation tips to maintain a healthy LAF community.

Roll a D6. RESULT 6  figure needs poo. goes into the bush. Decision do his mates cover him? Smoke? lol

VC roll a D6. Result 6 = booby trap. decide on what type. Casualty killed or wounded?

Call in medivac.

Chopper ambush (no pun intended.)

There is a whole scenario on this subject. ;)

Well, there's another idea for a vignette for Mr Hicks to look at while the rest of us are suffering.

Well, here's one thread which is alive and kicking without me having to post a single pic of a model  :D

I would have you know, however, than my battlefield will have all the required amenities, for both sides, with more than adequate supplies of toilet paper, even with all the hoarding going on.
And that is (sort of) on topic, because I dusted off yet another rescued-from-the-bin architecture student's model (here is the first such case: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=123127.msg1550475#msg1550475 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=123127.msg1550475#msg1550475)) which will provide me with some real estate for this setting.

This one seems to represent a sort of square with buildings on three sides. It needs a lot of work, but could just pass muster if you close one eye and squint through the other. After all, Stanley Kubrick used bits of Britain to represent Vietnam in Full Metal Jacket, so I'm only following best practice  >:D
Pics to follow.

And I actually completed one model - well, almost.
This will be fitted to a 1' x 1' surface later, and flock and grass added around the base.
This is from the Oshiro Models Chinese buildings range.

I like what YOU did with the roof - it did most of the work.  :D
The tile detail made it easy. I just applied three shades of slate, and a spot of blue and terracotta; flesh wash; and a dusting, heavy in some areas, with dark sand weathering powder.

And now comes the discipline bit - no otters orders before I finish these.
Resistance is indeed futile, methinks.

On another note - any idea for a source of markings for the Ontos, or should I try to locate my old transfer printing sheets?

We are here to offer your particular drug and keep you supplied.  lol

Re markings the vehicles had few apart from serial numbers. Perhaps a nickname. We are investigating transfer sheets but the recent virus issues kinda slowed us down. Well that's our excuse.

I'm going cold turkey  :o
Thanks for the info.
Will see what I can do. Just realised I can't print my own as I have transparent transfer printer  sheets, and these do not reproduce white.
