Title: Should we have a covid-19 painting club?
Post by: zemjw on March 22, 2020, 08:21:05 PM
It's been a while since LAF has done a painting club and I was wondering if the current situation the world finds itself in is a good excuse for one. Anything to take our minds off the day to day crap has to be a good thing :)

Basically it would be any figures finished while the pandemic is still on. Sadly, that could be rather open ended, but hopefully not.

There are plenty of virus images out there for the badge, so, mods, how about it ???

Great idea, but as this could go on for a while how about making it groups, gangs, regiments or such rather than single figures per entry?

second the idea of groups/squads/warbands, sounds like a good distraction, and enabler to get some groups up and done for solo play at the least?

I'd recommend calling it something more vague, like The Quarantined Painter's Club or something, and perhaps not with a virus badge either.

+1 to Gibby. The group (instead of the single miniature) thing as we're also in this together.

Stuck indoors on your own painting, welcome to my world   ;)

If only that meant I could paint as well as you do...   lol

I'm looking like I will be laid off by the end of the week, so yeah, anything to not think about it until my company can reopen its doors.

Best of luck with the employment situation Sinewgrab.  Hopefully it won't be too much longer.

Good idea... that could help me focus on more important things that need to be finished  ::)

I like the quarantine club idea, group theme. I'll just be doing my usual :)

Sorry to hear about the work situation Sinewgrab, this event has certainly thrown a wrench into the works.

Why not a post apoc theme, or is that too grim?

I’m not sure painting each other with Covid-19 is what anyone’s government had in mind when they released their social distancing guidelines.

I suppose there could be a prize for best depiction of the morphology of the coronavirus but I’m not doing it in 6mm let alone 0.00006 mil.

How about best banner or flag painted on your last remaining sheet of loo paper? Points for commitment.

Post apoc is my chosen genre most of the time...but I'm planning on finishing my Teutonic Knights, Conquistadwarves, and WW2 Italians.

And thanks for the good thoughts, people - my wife is a kidney transplant survivor, and the people who say we are overreacting make me want to get particularly vicious.

Why not do something along the lines of the old 'What I Painted This Month' thread - that way it's not tied to a specific theme that not everyone may be interested in and just allows users to post pictures of their work while stuck indoors!

A great idea but let us not limit it to 100 entries this time.

How about anything BUT post-apoc?
It may help to take your mind off of the current situation?
 ;)

Best idea so far... no restriction on theme, scale, or kind of models painted  8)

Gosh, thanks.  They're Jutes from Mierce Miniatures.  I think this company made the best skeleton warriors I've ever seen. Of course that's up to taste.  They're regular 28mm.

The wraith is bigger.  Probably about 15cm plus spear.

I'm currently experimenting with the contrast paints I recently acquired while painting some really old Wargames Factory survivors my friends young son assembled and primed.   Not the best paint job but lord it is alot faster than I have ever painted before...  lol

Being in public health, way too busy too participate but also can support sinewgrab.  The math behind Covid 19, at its best, is daunting and, at its worst, is horrific.  There are some real idiots making noise and some of them in far too high places.

Don't plan on a few weeks - plan on two to three months and then hope like heck four weeks and we are swinging back towards normal.  But, seriously, plan for the long term to the best your ability and resources allow.  If you over buy, your excess will be well received by those in need on the other side.  Normal won't come back over night and there will be real pain and want before we get there for far too many.

I'd recommend some sort of rosy, hopeful theme - much better way to distract from the dismal news and realities.

I'm definitely one for "teams" or "together" as the theme (if there is a theme).

I think we should have something.

I'm documenting my Covid-19 painting on a dedicated page on my blog. If interested it's here https://nozzawargaming.blogspot.com/p/coronavirus-hobby-activity.html (https://nozzawargaming.blogspot.com/p/coronavirus-hobby-activity.html).
