Title: Planet 28 - All the extra stuff.
Post by: Mammoth miniatures on March 24, 2020, 11:20:10 AM
Hello all!
I recently ran a kickstarter to produce a printed run of my rule system Planey 28 - A narrative skirmish system inspired by the work in the inq28 community.

It was always my intent to give these rules out free to the community once printed copies had been sent out to backers, But owing to recent global events and the possibility of severe postage delays i have decided to give the PDF out now!

You can download the rules for free here: https://www.wargamevault.com/product/307469/Planet-28--Simple-narrative-skirmish-rules

in the book you'll find rules for character creation, weapon creation, campaign progression and a plot generator to add some narrative to your pick up games.

Not a problem, The intent was always to give the rules away free not lock them into a kickstarter. Once the backer copies have been sent out (assuming the post offices survives the coming apocalypse) I'll have some printed copies for sale on the website .

I've set up a facebook group for planet 28 (and future mammoth miniatures releases) should anyone have queries/homebrew rules/criticisms - and thanks to the enthusiasm of the community the game has been on the wargames vault best sellers list since launch!

The first expansion for planet 28 is now avaliable to download on wargames vault.

Death on the periphery is an expansion for planet 28 that adds solo and cooperative rules, hidden character agendas and a 3 part micro campaign, "escape from Lychester VII".

The rules are avaliable as a pay what you like download, along with the planet 28 core rules, now!

Title: Re: Planet 28 - "Death on the periphery" now in print.

Evening all!
I just took delivery of a print run of Death on the periphery, The solo expansion for planet 28.
This expansion  can now be ordered in the same A5 zine format as the core book, meaning it can fit in a gaming bag or on a bookshelf without taking up acres of room.

In this 16 page book you'll find all the rules for playing solo and co-op games, giving your characters secret agendas, controlling enemy warbands, and even a micro campaign "escape from lychester VII" to get you started.

And of course the PDF remains free on wargames vault as a pay what you like download.

Title: Patreon character profiles.
Post by: Mammoth miniatures on August 24, 2020, 10:50:30 PM
I've recently set up a patreon for planet 28 and other game projects I'm working on. It's not dedicated to any specific big release, it's just a little something to encourage me to keep making regular content.

The first two bits to come from it are these character profiles. Members of the planet 28 facebook group have been asking for a bestiary/pre built character profile, So that's where i started.

nice crisp high res PDF's can be found free on the planet28 facebook page, and hopefully in a bit when I've built up enough of this odd extra content it will all be compiled into an annual of sorts.

A few more character profiles from patreon - I've got about 5 months of these now so maybe it's worth putting them and all the extra rules content into a single book.

(This one's a three pager, so it's added as an attachment below.)

With these profiles, the micro campaigns, extra combat rules, living Armour and the D100 conversion rules there's now a whole bunch of extra game content that can be plugged into planet 28.

"In this episode of We Discuss...Brian covers Planet 28. The thinnest wargaming rule book you will ever read, not to mention an outstandingly low price and capable of being played in solo mode as we will cover. While it is a miniature agnostic game, the artwork and the feel of the rules drips with classic Pulp goodness, so if you are a fan of Flash Gordon or Commander Cody this is the game for you."

Hey Folks! Tonight I tried playing my first solo game of Planet 28, Episode 1: Hard Landing.
Can anyone suggest what is a reasonable amount of points to spend on a decent, first group to face off against those seven Rebel Workers in this first, campaign scenario?

I spent approximately 100 points each on four characters and was soundly trounced by the AI opponent.  I spent point bulking up my  characters' Shooting and Fighting skills, but neglected their Agility skill.  Soooo, the AI adversaries always won initiative with their 5 agility.  I'm fine re-drafting a group of fighters with better Agility stats, but it's not clear to me what amount of points is reasonable for a first team.  Also, how many characters should I be fielding?  Seven?  The solo rules even offer the choice to draft one character.  Not sure what type of superhero being that would be to face off against those brawling Rebel Workers.

Thanks for any advice and insight. I'd ask the PLanet 28 FB group, but I don't use FB and decided to ask here.
Pics of my first game.  Going for a 15mm scale with paper miniatures and terrain:

That's a lovely looking game! the general consensus among players is around 500-700 points to start with. Personally I build warbands based on which miniatures I want to play with - but I have found that having at least one strong commander type (your inquisitor/space marine/ork boss/leeroy jenkins) and a couple of heavy fighters helps, then you can round out the warband with more middle of the road fighter/shooter types.

Thanks. I've dabbled a bit in other skirmish games, but I don't have the space dedicated to a 3' x 3' gaming area. I'm finding the 15mm scale much more reasonable, but my big hands are clumsy with the little paper bits. I draw my characters and agree I field the characters I want to play with.  500-700 points. So I was on the low - very low end of the drafting points spectrum. Ha ha!
I didn't even consider a commander type.  Good to know. Thank you for the very speedy reply. Thank you also for the extras found in this thread.  I really love your artwork and the old school, zine-styled approach. You've got a new fan.

Edit: Just read through the fan-created Peace Train.  Love the 'Leaflet Drop' ability!
Edit #2: Can I (or you) share on Board Game Geek, the images of the extras you posted earlier on this thread page?

Just had a read through, A really lovely playthrough - Very cool to see the game at a larger scale, certainly pushing the limits!

Appreciate the comments and feedback on the rules as well, it all gets added to the feedback folder. :)
