Could anyone recommend some sources on Annamese junks of the Tonkin War period?
I have a couple of 1/48 Vietnam "command junk" kits that I'd like to backdate to earlier times. Obviously, the machine guns would have to go, and the superstructure may be too modern, but it would be nice to see some contemporary illustrations from the late 1800s, to reduce the guesswork. Thanks!
And this is very nice, although I'm looking to modify the plastic kits to resemble more civilian-looking prototypes, whatever they may have looked like.

Thank you! I do have copy of that book somewhere, although I would be surprised to see much coverage beyond the Yangtse. Nevertheless, since the boats came from a shared tradition, there may be some useful information.

There are certainly colonial French sources and pictures of the late 19th C. and early 20th C.
Google with words in French: jonque indochine tonkin give some results (although mixed with results about China).

"Gallica" is the website of the BNF (French National Library) there are lots of old books and documents in there.

Wasn’t there a movie based on a Clavell book set in Hong Kong? Perhaps a visual in there for you? Taipan was it?
