Thanks to all the great threads on this board and having some time on my hands I have decided to dig out my 20mm WWII stuff. I want to rebuild a project that I started about 15 years ago well before I joined this forum where I have picked up loads of inspiration, skills and techniques that I would like to apply to this project. I am not really expecting to spend a lot of cash on this as I already have most of the stuff and what I don't have I should be able to make myself
Some pictures of what I have at the moment
I have two beach boards one I made when I started this project and a second one that was made for pirates, the second one looks good but the first one will fit the map I am going to use

RF Book for D-Day
the map I am trying to build

and the allied force I want to put together
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-200420152620-457542243.jpeg)
Old board makes 8' of coast but very narrow water

Other beach board I have

Cool stuff
That diagram makes you just want to build that force! Do you have more landing craft available?
And are you going to add some more sea, or just have them appear on the beach?
-
nice, looking forward to see this project Resurrection

We are pretty much running mates at present!
You have made a cracking start. 👍
-
Thanks it is all your fault :D
I am sure your is much nicer
-
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I always think that the other blokes toys are better!\
-
Brilliant. Love the AB british too. Are you doing any AB Germans for the opposition? I have some on the to do list but need to finish my British platoon first ::)
-
No I don't have AB Germans and I am not sure my bank balance will survive another trip to AB, They are not cheap are they?
-
They are a bit pricey but superb sculpts. The are great but got some Xan and elheim ones and they are good Germans too.

Terrific job on those and deffo stealing the armoured doors idea. 👍👍👍
-
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-220420170203-457952171.jpeg)
Looking at various picture I think there is an extra thick plate a round the cabin for the driver so I have added an bit in there pretty much finished
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-220420170204-4579639.jpeg)
Started repainting my old germans
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-220420170205-457972248.jpeg)
-
Great stuff. Really cool scratch build
-
Thanks
-
Looking sharp. 👍

I am needing to redo my table for this project
Been searching online for ideas
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-240420165720-458322185.png)
My current setup does not look right
So I am going to rebuild the whole town on a separate board incorporating my old stuff ,but with new buildings using the photos for ideas
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-240420170120-458542071.jpeg)
the small boards are bases for the new houses
-
Terrific!
You’ve got @ head of steam up now.... keep going!😬👍👍
-
Decided to work on the rest of my fleet, still WIP with just some painting to finish and some benches on the LCA's to build
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-260420230254-459381912.jpeg)
still need to build one of each
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-260420230256-459591486.jpeg)
then I need two LCT 4 and two LCT 5 may just try and build the front of these if I can work out the sizes
-
Looking very smart and well turned out. Really terrific job that you have made of all of them.
I have the Raventhorpe LCT 4 and it’s blooming big so your idea of just doing the front makes complete sense! It also gives me an idea to take a saw to two LCT 6 that I have that were not used on D Day. But chopped up and used for beach landing only ....... that’ll work. 👍
-
Cheers
Do 4 and 5's have the same front end?
-
Pretty similar
-
Here ya go ....

Another great looking beach landing thread...need to stop looking here as I don’t need another project lol
-
This is a very inspirational thread .
The scratch built landing craft are terrific. That’s the way to crack any project based on assault landings , saves a lot of money being able to generate these lovely craft.
-
Thanks guys
-
Nice landing ship.
-
Landing ship ain't mine
next part of this project
I have a load of normal shermans but I need DD's
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-270420185016-459741117.jpeg)
So I need to convert what I have
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-270420185014-459621921.jpeg)
Just going to build the screens not bother with propellers
-
Again, brilliant self building.

Progress on the first DD tank
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-280420105141-45983480.jpeg)
Just need to paint it
I think it looks the part
-
Very convincing. Well executed mate. 👍👍
-
Cool stuff!
What are the size of the Sherman's bases? Do you always put bases on your 20mm Tanks and AFVs?
-
Ohhh, that looks good colin! 8)
-
Clever.
-
Great work - so much progress since I last checked in.
Really liking the landing craft fleet, and the DD shermans are inspired. You could do some swimming ones too - as the only bit of the tank you can really see is the turret, within the frame.
-
Thanks guys
I put the airfix ones on bases because I don't like the soft plastic track so you can glue it together easier. The bases are just slightly bigger than the tank
I don't need swimming DD's my sea is not wide enough plus I wouldn't want to waste one of my shermans by cutting it up, the screens are still removable so I can use the shermans as normal
Another picture of the finished DD tank
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-280420220310.jpeg)
-
Well and very cleverly done Sir. 👍
-
Great idea!
-
Just found this thread.
Brilliant scratchbuilding on those landing craft and I like the 'convertible' tank idea, multi-use at it's best!
8) 8)
Looking forward to watching this progress.
:)
-
As I have said earlier in this thread I need four LCA's so here is the start
Foam core and cereal packet cardboard
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-300420000244-460042203.jpeg)
glued it together with PVA
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-300420000246-460312123.jpeg)
Will finish the details tomorrow
-
Terrific and great to see how you have constructed this by stages. Really impressive. 👍
-
Nice work - we love a bit of cornflake packet engineering :D
-
Great to see you battering through this! Great work Colin! :-*
-
Lovely work ,
The Sherman DD is a particularly nice solution. As Rich mentioned using cornflakes card seems a very nice way to avoid going out to the recycling bin.
Looking forward to the next update.
Mark.

Thanks guys

the benches are to finish all four
Running low on paint so this will be the last one for a while
-
Some sharp cardboard engineering there Colin 8)
-
The benches being fitted will be the icing on the cake me thinks. 👍
-
Finished my first three DD Tanks only three left to do

Also been working on some of my defences

Just got grubby tanks sherman flail, has anybody got some decent pictures of how all the bits go on?
-
Great stuff Colin, I like the Sherman water wings 8)
-
Cracking Colin! They are looking the biz! :-*
-
Terrific 👍
-
Spent today trying to build a Britannia miniatures flail tank
Not fun a very fiddly kit
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-050520221315-46123568.jpeg)
Anybody know what these are
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-050520221316-461242022.jpeg)
found a picture show them here
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-050520221317-46125952.jpeg)
Loads of green stuff work
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-050520221319-461262463.jpeg)
The actual flail is a right pain not a very strong wargame model I imagine there will be a lot of running repairs
-
The actual flail is a right pain not a very strong wargame model I imagine there will be a lot of running repairs
Could you replace the chains with cheap jewelry chain? Maybe glue a length of thick fishing line or wire alongside the chain to support it.
-
I'd go with chain but leave it slack.
Also you don't know fiddly until your flail works... Admittedly mine is 1/56!
https://youtu.be/ONtOYzSN2nY
-
Great progress Colin. The DDs look great.
That flail tank does not look like a great casting though :(
-
Those DD tanks look good.
Good luck with that flail.
-
That’s a poor casting compared to the old days under Dave. The tracks , now in resin instead of metal , are a right mess!
Just got in so will sort out the info you need on the LCIs ASAP mate 👍
-
THANKS

Good work on the flail - looks a right pain, but great to see it has all the right add-on bits
Sabot, that LCI is a bit good!

No mate it’s a Britannia casting ..... bought years ago so a decent casting . 👍

Looking great 👍

Good stuff Colin 8)
I recently read this book...
A fascinating read indeed. And under a tenner on Amazon.
Amazing how many of the 'Germans' in the second string units mainly garrisoning the Normandy defences, weren't actually German at all. An awful lot were Russian 'Hiwis' and other conscripted nationalities from eastern Europe. Some of them fought very tenaciously. A lot of them didn't.
-
The last time I used my beach I thought it was too narrow and too easy for the allies to get across, so I have decided to redo them
first one
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-210520235413-466191066.jpeg)
and while looking through boxes of old stuff I found this
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-210520234434-466141798.jpeg)
Just need a bit of TLC no idea why I didn't finish at the time

We just need this lock down to finish so we can get a game, and there is the small matter of some where to set this up? my plan is hopefully to have this as my first proper game in the new room still need an other 4' of beach to make as well

Nice.

tanks for scale
-
That’s top notch. Glad I sent some guns now! 😬👍
-
Nice one Colin! 8)
-
Thanks guys
Ordered some more guns from sgts mess will see what they are like
I have just received a small package from Any scale models some useful stuff will show later on
-
I have received two packages today
first one from sgts mess two guns and some crew
Not too impressed the guns look as if they have been sand blasted and they are missing ammo drums or sights I am struggling to work out which, prices were ok and delivery was quick
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-050620104221-46806862.jpeg)
The other package was from anyscale models
Wish I had found this company before would have saved me a lot of work
Very cheap as well as quick too
I had made my own lifebelts before but got this pack of 10 for £0.99
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-050620104223-46808240.jpeg)
and some stowage as well
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-050620104222-46807543.jpeg)
I also wanted some rubber boats as loads of pictures show them attached to Landing craft
Didn't know which size one I wanted so ordered one of each and two of the most likely size but they sent me a note saying they had over charged my post age so they included some extras to cover the cost

-
Oooh dear. Those metal castings are pretty ropey.
I found an amazing model boat supplier a few years ago, who produced all sorts of amazing nautical ephemera and accessories in multiple scales. Will see if I can dig out who it was.
-
That's a *massive* fleet you are shipping there. Very impressive. As are all the tanks.

THANKS GUYS

Bit shiny on the beret, but could just be the light?
But 34 more to do would fill me with horror lol

-
You’re going to need a bigger board!
Amazing collection, Colin. Well done for picking it up again and sticking with it. The actual game looks like it’s going to be mega :o :o :o
-
Wow, that’s a lot of landing craft.
I thought I had a fair few in 10mm, but clearly not!
Tell me about the green decks - I’ve gone plain grey all-over - and you rarely see the deck in photos (and how much it would show between green and grey in B&W photos)

Much like decks were painted red in Nelson’s day to hide the blood they were painted green to hide the vomit🤮
-
I think you are in time for the 80th anniversary in 2024. A bigger board and 500 figures. So keep the brush wet.. ;)
Love these landing vessels, never saw so much in 28mm
-
Good lord man this is a long project. I applaud you on your persistence.
-
Not 28mm only 20mm
-
Not 28mm only 20mm
Sometimes I think 20mm is a better decision, because you get more stuff. But 28mm is for an old man easier to handle...
