Title: Still going D-Day project
Post by: gamer Mac on April 20, 2020, 03:46:39 PM
Thanks to all the great threads on this board and having some time on my hands I have decided to dig out my 20mm WWII stuff. I want to rebuild a project that I started about 15 years ago well before I joined this forum where I have picked up loads of inspiration, skills and techniques that I would like to apply to this project. I am not really expecting to spend a lot of cash on this as I already have most of the stuff and what I don't have I should be able to make myself
Some pictures of what I have at the moment
I have two beach boards one I made when I started this project and a second one that was made for pirates, the second one looks good but the first one will fit the map I am going to use
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-200420152617-457521089.jpeg)
RF Book for D-Day
the map I am trying to build
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-200420152618-45753931.jpeg)
and the allied force I want to put together
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-200420152620-457542243.jpeg)

Old board makes 8' of coast but very narrow water

Other beach board I have

Cool stuff

That diagram makes you just want to build that force! Do you have more landing craft available?

And are you going to add some more sea, or just have them appear on the beach?

I am needing to redo my table for this project
Been searching online for ideas
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-240420165720-458322185.png)
My current setup does not look right
So I am going to rebuild the whole town on a separate board incorporating my old stuff ,but with new buildings using the photos for ideas
 (https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-240420170120-458542071.jpeg)
the small boards are bases for the new houses

Title: Re: Wargame butterfly effect (FLEET WIP)
Post by: gamer Mac on April 26, 2020, 11:15:52 PM
Decided to work on the rest of my fleet, still WIP with just some painting to finish and some benches on the LCA's to build
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-260420230254-459381912.jpeg)
still need to build one of each
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/45/1912-260420230256-459591486.jpeg)

then I need two LCT 4 and two LCT 5 may just try and build the front of these if I can work out the sizes
Title: Re: Wargame butterfly effect (FLEET WIP)
Post by: SABOT on April 26, 2020, 11:54:56 PM
Looking very smart and well turned out. Really terrific job that you have made of all of them.

I have the Raventhorpe LCT 4 and it’s blooming big so your idea of just doing the front makes complete sense! It also gives me an idea to take a  saw to two LCT 6 that I have that were not used on D Day. But chopped up and used for beach landing only ....... that’ll work. 👍

This is a very inspirational thread .

The scratch built landing craft are terrific. That’s the way to crack any project based on assault landings , saves a lot of money being able to generate these lovely craft.

Landing ship ain't mine
next part of this project
I have a load of normal shermans but I need DD's

Great work - so much progress since I last checked in.

Really liking the landing craft fleet, and the DD shermans are inspired. You could do some swimming ones too - as the only bit of the tank you can really see is the turret, within the frame.
Title: DD Tank finished
Post by: gamer Mac on April 28, 2020, 10:17:13 PM
Thanks guys
I put the airfix ones on bases because I don't like the soft plastic track so you can glue it together easier. The bases are just slightly bigger than the tank
I don't need swimming DD's my sea is not wide enough plus I wouldn't want to waste one of my shermans by cutting it up, the screens are still removable so I can use the shermans as normal
Another picture of the finished DD tank

Could you replace the chains with cheap jewelry chain?  Maybe glue a length of thick fishing line or wire alongside the chain to support it.
Title: Re: First three DD's finished
Post by: Rich H on May 06, 2020, 07:49:37 AM
I'd go with chain but leave it slack.
Also you don't know fiddly until your flail works... Admittedly mine is 1/56!

Good stuff Colin  8)

I recently read this book...

A fascinating read indeed. And under a tenner on Amazon.

Amazing how many of the 'Germans' in the second string units mainly garrisoning the Normandy defences, weren't actually German at all. An awful lot were Russian 'Hiwis' and other conscripted nationalities from eastern Europe. Some of them fought very tenaciously. A lot of them didn't.

Title: Re: LCT 5
Post by: gamer Mac on June 05, 2020, 11:39:01 AM
I have received two packages today
first one from sgts mess two guns and some crew
Not too impressed the guns look as if they have been sand blasted and they are missing ammo drums or sights I am struggling to work out which, prices were ok and delivery was quick
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-050620104221-46806862.jpeg)
The other package was from anyscale models
Wish I had found this company before would have saved me a lot of work
Very cheap as well as quick too
I had made my own lifebelts before but got this pack of 10 for £0.99
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-050620104223-46808240.jpeg)
and some stowage as well
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-050620104222-46807543.jpeg)
I also wanted some rubber boats as loads of pictures show them attached to Landing craft
Didn't know which size one I wanted so ordered one of each and two of the most likely size but they sent me a note saying they had over charged my post age so they included some extras to cover the cost

Wow, that’s a lot of landing craft.

I thought I had a fair few in 10mm, but clearly not!

Tell me about the green decks - I’ve gone plain grey all-over - and you rarely see the deck in photos (and how much it would show between green and grey in B&W photos)

Much like decks were painted red in Nelson’s day to hide the blood they were painted green to hide the vomit🤮

I think you are in time for the 80th anniversary in 2024. A bigger board and 500 figures. So keep the brush wet..  ;)

Love these landing vessels, never saw so much in 28mm

Not 28mm only 20mm
Sometimes I think 20mm is a better decision, because you get more stuff. But 28mm is for an old man easier to handle...
