One of my mates has decided to game the great Emu War of 1932! A few miniatures and some terrain building later and we were set to battle the birds!
With relaxed Covid19 restrictions we had a play test!
Our piece of Western Australia...

The full intro to “Through the fence and Defence...To the wheat fields beyond” is on the TSOG blog

BTW do a search on Google for Emu Wars if you want details on how the Australian Army took on some flightless birds and lost 🤪...

I love this! :-*
-
That is fantastic!
-
Love the photos.
There has to be some joke about Emus.
At first I figured it was about Liberty Insurance. :D

Nice evocative terrain Darling.

As one who lives in Western Australia, nice to see our wheatbelt area recreated. I used to live in this area when I was a kid, so I remember them clearing the scrubland using 2 dozers and a long chain. Might have to get some late WW1 figs or use 8th Army but I need a lot more Emus (think I have 5 or 6).

Absolutely gorgeous table! Emu are scary things, I remember cleaning one up many years ago in a Landy on ex. That was a bit of paperwork.
Where do you guys game? My job often has me down in the SE corner of the Antipodes and would love to see some gaming done.

What a lovely terrain set-up. Proper. Well done :-*

Exceptional! I am awestruck.... :o :o :o

Hi Gentlemen!
Thanks for all your comments!
George has added an update to the TSOG blog with more on the Emu War! There’s details on the making of the tabletop, the rules and the actual history.
Here’s a WIP of the table...

And on the history side a picture of the Pickering Brook boys on ‘the bus’...

There’s lots to read on the blog...

Hey Poiter50 re the Army figure George replied, “I think they are an early empress or elite miniatures range. I’m not sure they are available anymore.“ if he finds anything more he’ll let me know!
Cheers!

Great project and a fantastic layout! :-* :-* :-*

Captain D, thanks for asking George, I suspect one of my Resistance Lewis gunners or the forthcoming Aussie Hone Guard from Eureka will provide me with a figure for that. Looking at the pics, I think I met George either at Cancon or Little Wars Adelaide some years back.
Turkey Shoot appears to be OOP but I suspect FFoL might be appropriate.
I was thinking of a Stutz Bearcat for the vehicle although a Corgi Crossley might do for the bus.
I have 5 or 6 Emus in my collection but I think I need more and I might need a couple of Emu General Emus as well. Any suggestions for sources (plastic acceptable for herd)?
-
Hey Poiter50, yes George has been to those events!
Re the Salmson I haven’t found one around with the boat tail design I’d think a Bugatti boat tail speedster may be an okay substitute and the Model of Yesteryear Crossley would make a good ‘old bus’.
I’ve PMed you.
Cheers!

I had never heard of this 'war'. lol Great stuff!

Terrific! 👍👍

One of the great, forgotten campaigns of Australian history. That there isn't a memorial and display commemorating this at the AWM is a crime.
Also, that's one of the great gaming tables of Australian history! :-*
-
A brilliant table and a fun looking game :-*
-
I'd never heard of this war either ("Emu Wars...how the Australian Army took on some flightless birds and lost")!
Congrats on the concept and a great looking table. If you get the chance to post your rules on your blog, could be jolly useful for all kinds of 'animal' type games.
