Title: Turning out the Nightwatch, Part 3 (UPDATE Page 2)
Post by: Friends of General Haig on May 10, 2020, 10:43:27 PM
I have just posted a blog entry about my ongoing project to paint up wargames figures to represent the characters in Rembrandts 'The Nightwatch'.

You can see it here:

link (https://theviaregia.blogspot.com/2020/05/the-guardsmen-of-amsterdam.html)

Slow progress,The next set are in the painting pile line while I decide how to  as I'm not a speedy painter, and I've been taking my time.  Eight characters painted so far that you can see here.

More are in the pipeline and I have to work out how I want to base those painted so far.  Researching the painting has been interesting and I came across a copy that shows the original painting before it was 'cropped' in the 18th century.  Details on the blog.

This is absolutely marvellous. I take my hat off to you - well, I would if I was wearing one. Jut so imaginative and inventive.

i suspect you're way ahead of me, but, if it helps, last time I was in Amsterdam there were statues of the figures in The Nightwatch in one of the squares. Looking at the statues might help you identify some of the finer details of clothing etc.

Last time I was there, there were scaffolds supporting minute scanning equipment. I'd been before, but my wife hadn't. :(

Many thanks, Paul! Actually, I'm only about 30 minutes ahead of you :) .  This morning I was investigating the colour that is being carried in the painting and came across the bronze statues. Very useful!  They have already cleared a couple of things up.

I haven't yet made it in person to see the painting, but its on the list of things to do :) .

Thanks, Hu Rhu!  Much appreciated :) .

Thank you, Sunjester.  I certainly have a lot to live up to :D .

Amsterdam is well worth a visit, the Reiksmuseum is awesome, not just for the Night Watch there are a stack of other really good paintings that are full of costume details. A lot of the other artists don't get the big crowds.

There is also the Rembrandt House museum.

We've been a few times for research.

Very nice work. I must say my inner teen had a sly giggle at the title but as long as it’s between consenting adults, why not? It’s the 21st C not the 17th after all.

Honestly, as a Dutchman I would recommend staying away from Amsterdam. If we forget about Covid 19, it's loaded with tourists and doesn't show the Dutch culture very well. Whenever I'm there to visit family, I just cringe and want to escape ASAP.
There are many other cities and towns way better to visit and enjoy.

Love what you're doing with the project by the way! Fantastic already.

Don’t worry, the new series of Vandervalk should take the heat off Amsterdam in terms of portraying the Netherlands in a poor light.  lol

I've just seen an article on the BBC website which says that on Tuesday of this week the Rijksmuseum released a new hi-tech photo of the painting which you can zoom in on. That should give you a much better view of it than going to the museum (where I believe the painting is in glass).

I have just posted a blog update about my ongoing project. You can see it here:

https://theviaregia.blogspot.com/2020/05/the-guardsmen-of-amsterdam_31.html

In this update you can see the next characters converted and ready for paining, along with a bit of background to each.  Their backgrounds provide an interesting insight in to Amsterdam life in the early to mid 17th century. Here are three from this latest batch.

What I'm wondering, is how you're going to base these figures. It would be wonderful if somehow you could create a 3-D version of The Nightwatch, but how you would do that I don't know.

I had been pondering this for a while. I considered making a set diorama, but being a wargamer, I’ve gone for individual bases as I want to be able to include the figure in games. I do want to try and build a ‘set’ that the individually base figures can sit in to represent the painting in 3D but that’s still in early planning stages  :D
