Lurked on here for a while and finally decided to do something about my total lack of post apocalyptic miniatures and terrain; basically I'm starting from scratch and intend to use this forum to chart my progress and hopefully post things other people want to see.
Looking at a world in a theatre of war devastated by nuclear weapons and have, as with all my games, written a little back story to set the mood and guide my building and buying.
Using the Zona Alfa ruleset.
Zona Britaniya
In February 1988 the assassination of Mikhail Gorbachev and most of the Soviet Government was accomplished in less than 48 hours, leaving the USSR in turmoil and the world more fearful of Global Nuclear War than the 1960’s.
The coup was orchestrated by a massive and secret organised criminal network headed by the elusive Nestor Lebedev, known as The Swan.
Lebedev quickly took control of state press and television, promoting himself the saviour of the Soviet Union and protector of the teachings of Lenin and Marx.
Irrespective of his true political leanings, he embarked on a foreign policy of aggression and invasion across Asia; the US reeled at the speed at which this happened and made empty threats of war.
Throughout 1988 The Swan ignored them and pressed on.
On December 1st 1988 he turned his military machine against the US’s NATO allies and they could ignore his aggressive policies no more.
Initially the limited nuclear strikes were against military and strategic sites but quickly escalated to tit for tat nuclear devastation of cities in Russia, Europe and the United States.
The world was quickly heading for global devastation
Then, on Christmas Day, the Soviets launched a massive attack on the United Kingdom, at the same time warning the US that they were prepared to unleash every missile they had unless a deal was agreed.
The example made of Britain stopped the world in its tracks and tentative moves towards a peaceful resolution ensued.
Mutually assured destruction had been avoided.
Britain lost 65% of it’s population in the initial strikes and a further 28% in the 6 months following from radiation poisoning and disease.
Parliament, the government machine, Royalty, the rich and the powerful, who had remained safe in their bunkers, abandoned those they purported to serve and fled to nations relatively unaffected.
Within a few years the population of Britain was less than 300,000 and the whole country designated a no go area.
The country fell back to the dark ages, albeit with some modern technology, and it’s inhabitants had to learn a new set of skills in order to survive.
The mean Summer temperature now hovers a few degrees below freezing; in Winter it falls to 30 degrees below.
A new Ice Age is underway.
Most lived underground. At first. Then people started to go missing. Which was bad.
When they started to return it was worse.
What came next was unimaginable.
The US call it Area Zero; the Soviets designation is Zona Britaniya.

That works. Nice background setting.
And I've been looking for an excuse to pick up that Mantic fig. Thanks.

I like how you have started this, keep it up.

Cool! I like the backstory.
-
Fun!..... unless you live in Area Zero.

Couple of hours this evening knocking up another snow vehicle, think it looked better before I primed it.
Paint tomorrow hopefully.

First kit bash I've ever done; the body of 'The Devil' from Star Saga with an Anvil Industries head, filled the joint with superglue/bicarb then re based.
Wanted a grizzled and used look compared to the rookie I painted earlier in the week.
Star Saga game miniature had some imperfections (head was totally deformed which is why I used it for the kit bash) and little detail on the weapon which is also bent and refuses to straighten with hot water.
I did toy with the idea of weapon replacement but my bravery had abandoned me after the head transplant.
Think he's turned out OK.

Thank you, praise indeed.
Have seen a fair bit of your work here and elsewhere and always been impressed.

Whilst I'm doing this project on a budget I was fortunate so get some money for my birthday so thought I'd splash out a bit.
Got a 4x4 snow mat from Deep Cut Studios which should work great for both frozen sea and land.
Also a TTCombat MSV Ironsides ship which I did today; still got a few bits to tidy before I paint it, and I need to also assemble the half dozen cargo crates that come with the set.
Figured a nuclear winter would have ships frozen in the ice.
Took a while to do as I have glued it so it can be disassembled for 2 different versions (long and short) and both levels of the bridge and cabins can be accessed - jeez, that was fiddly.
It's a big piece of terrain - 75cm long.
Will post further images as I paint the ship and add furniture, cargo and stowage.

I love that ship. I have one and used it for a lot of games. I also love the backstory you have.
-
Great backstory....love the ship
:)
-
That's looking really good. I keep musing over that ship, whether I'd get enough use out of it?
-
Thanks guys.
Any ideas on a paint scheme?
Was thinking black blue and creamy white - all extremely rusted, of course.
I'm undecided on wintering the ship as well; covering it in snow will limit it useability in other games.
-

Hello Graham (it's Mark W A from Sellswords) - as above, I think if I don't heavily winterise it then it can get some good use.
-
Hi Mark,
I really like what you are doing on this project.
I'm not sure about the ship because I'd want to use it for late 19th and early 20th century (plus VSF gaming) and I'm probably be better off with a steam vessel.
-
That looks good.
It might prompt me to assemble mine.
-
Planned to take the ship outside, get it masked up and primed over the course of the day so I could get on with the painting at leisure over the next week.
Wind and rain put paid to that so I decided to work on a few mutations.
Have had these three cheap plastic pieces from Arena of the Planeswalkers for a while so thought I'd have a stab at at making them look decent.
Reckon they will do for loads of other games as well but based for Zona Britaniya's icy wastes.

Didn't sleep well so was up at 05.00hrs, took the dog for a walk then decided to paint up some Zone Hostiles I'd assembled and primed a couple of days ago.
These are Games Workshop Cursemites, got 8 from a chap on Ebay for £7 delivered which I thought was a deal.
Really easy to paint, only took 2 hours for all 8 including the bases.

Gave up waiting for the rain to stop to prime the ship and got on with it by brush. Hard work and the sun came out part way through :-[
Painted up and weathered, not sure whether to give it another wash to blend stuff in , leave as is or winterise for the Zone.
Only thing putting me off adding ice and snow effects is it will limit when I can use it.
There's still 8 containers to build from the kit though it's unlikely I''l want to use many of them - have plans to put furniture inside and various habitation and defence options on the deck.
Will keep everything modular I think so I can mix and match as desired.
Flickr has deleted the file of images for this post for some reason (possibly me) - there are pictures of the ship in a more complete state later in the thread.
-
Darkened cabin and bridge.
As the post above regarding the images.
-
Very nice. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished piece.
-
Nice painting.

Great work! I love the weathering effects on the ship and your beasties look the part.

Now to get on with furniture and scatter terrain for the ship.
-
Cracking! You have inspired me, so now I'm ready for some nautical nonsense - I have a hull, now to make something with it.
-
Ship's containers built and painted.
For just containers I have a collection of Dave Graffam ones which will do fine.
These I'm planning for habitats so supplies, furniture, tarps, graffiti etc.
Again pics have vanished but completed ship pics further down this page.
-
Got a small package today of 28mm 40 gallon drums from Anyscale models so decided to use some in putting together scatter for my ship.
Delved into the junk box and put some stuff together from a £2 jenga game I found in a charity shop last year, some old Star Saga parts, card, matchsticks, coffee stirrers, a wetwipe, some laughing gas canisters, card and a sprue.
Also attempted, for the first time, to make some things from greenstuff.
Remembered I hadn't posted up the kitbash crew I built last week so adding pics of them too.
Will post up once I have some paint on them.
More pics lost to the ether, but again there are completed pics below.
-
I think you're doing just fine. I love what you have done with the ship.

Thank you. Really enjoying the process.

Lovely stuff! Really like the backstory - very well written and all too plausible.

Greenstuff work looks good. Should paint up well.
-
Thanks guys.
Have primed up some stuff for painting later this week and then played board games with Debs for the afternoon.
Yes. I lost all of them.
Got chance to rebase these Malifaux Hoarcats to use as vermin.
My youngest was into Malifaux for a short while and gifted me his mins; they are slowly being integrated into many of my games.
30 minutes work and I think they're usable as is (apologies for camera phone pic, camera not available).

I'm calling the ship done so I can move onto other parts of this project and a couple of other bits as well.
I'm especially pleased with the Jenga block/cardboard lockers and the cardboard washing machine.
Obviously they will be used mix and match and I have a couple of lean-to's to add at some point for against containers.

Changed tack on how I wanted my crew to be, and finished off painting the last one this morning; and all because I noticed the snowmobile had more than a passing resemblance to a 3 wheeled van of some renown.
The other might well be a Capri Ghia.

Made some cheap plastic centipedes into Manaworms for Frostgrave Perilous Dark a while back and had a few left.
Chopped them and glued to a base with some rock/snow on to use as radioactive vermin in the zone.
They were less than £2 for a bag of 20 so giving good value across my games.

Painted a couple more crew members today, wanted some females to balance it a little.
Marlene has a flamethrower, is painted predominantly with Contrast paints, which I am struggling with, and I just noticed I've not finished painting and shading her visor.
She is a Mantic GCPS trooper, rebased and I cut away the light and accessories on the helmet.
She will do for now but I might grab another miniature and redo her at a later date.
Raquel is Captain Erika Dulinsky, also from Mantic, I've replaced her head with a gasmask one from Anvil Industries.
Again the paintjob hasn't worked as planned; I intended her to be a much lighter blend of greys. However, I think she is acceptable.
As with the rest of the crew they are named from characters in Only Fools and Horses.

I can't wait to see what you come up with for Grandad and Cassandra. :D
Didn't like the kitbash I made of Cassandra so replacement is still a work in progress.
Intention is to do Grandad and Uncle Albert in the future but from totally different sprues to add a differnet vibe, so they may well be some distance off.
My plan was always to create most of the content for crews, enemies and terrain from what I already had. The same as most hobbiests I have a plethora of unused minis, half used sprues, bags and boxes of unloved bits and random materials found lying about.
I have spent birthday money on a few luxury bits and bought the occasional minis cheap on ebay but most has been done with existing materials.
A change in financial situation has pushed me into re-evaluating spending on hobbies and a review of all the stuff I have already got lying around; I'm not destitute or anything, just need to economise on everything for 2-3 years to get where I want to be.
I have committed to completing Zona Britaniya without spending another penny; I reckon it will take 4-5 months with what I have planned so any Christmas money I get will be the next time I spend.
TBH I'm looking forward to having to learn new stuff rather than buy new stuff and hope what I make is enjoyed by contributors on LAF as much as I enjoy their contributions.

OK.
So, out on the barren frozen seas various competing groups can be found.
Some are hunters, some traders, others smugglers. Some live in permanent settlements whilst others are nomads.
Here is my take on a nomad camp from the bits boxes.
Tents made from card, sleds from coffee stirrers and matchsticks, Yaks are Copplestone and boxes/oil drum are Anyscale Models.

So in line with my decision to complete this project without spending any more money I pretty much immediately hit a snag.
For Zone Hostiles I need 8 Zombies and 6 Rad Ghouls, the bits box revealed 2 Mantic Plague Zombies sprues for a total of 10.
If I painted them up as Zombies then what would I use for Rad Ghouls?
My initial solution was to paint the Yaks and camp above in the hope of divine inspiration - with a week passed this was unlikely so it was time for another sit, sift the bits box and think.
I had 3 Heresy Miniatures Maggotmen which could replace slow moving zombies and I felt that the Plague Zombies were a better fit as fast moving ghouls.
Think, think, think.
Finally came upon some Irregular Miniatures metal Cave Bugs which I'd never liked and an idea was formed; coupled with bits from old plastic skeleton sprues, and a fair bit of cutting and gluing, I could finally put together a group of Grubbers and Maggotmen with the slow zombie stats.

6 'Reds'; often former employees of private organisations who send scientists and military support into Zona Britaniya looking for anomalies - but on the cheap and without adequate PPE.
These poor souls end up with escalating levels of mutations, initially physical with no effect on the mind but, later, descending into madness.
No-one knows why the skin discolours red but at least it makes them easy to spot once they leave cover.
Built and painted yesterday in a couple of hours, these will have Rad Ghoul stats.
I have another idea for this level of Zone Hostile, I'm sure they will end up here at some point.

Very nice.
It's inspiring to get a glimpse into other people's zones.

Done a little more work on my zone in between walking the dog and playing Blood in Space.
Found some Nitrous Oxide cannisters whilst out with the dog, these had been on the road a while and were crushed and rusty. Gave them a quick wash, dried in the oven and a coat of varnish - always nice to have a bit more scatter.
A few days ago I got to thinking about my Zona Britaniya and it's constant winter, constructs in Frostgrave and an image jumped in my head from the film, The Abyss, the bit where water coalesces into form.
So I got the idea of energy seeping through anomalies and forming the surrounding materials into solid form.
Blast through the minis box found some very cheap, naff minis from Arena of the Planeswalkers.
An hour with superglue, sand, primer, wash and drybrush has transformed them into almost identical colour to the gaming mat.
Delboy and Rodney were out patrolling when they spotted some scrap on the horizon and immediately headed for it.
A quick look and all was clear except strange puffs of snow.
As they arrived to survey their prize the place erupted in strange beasts, seemingly emerging from the ice and snow.
You'll be pleased to know they got clean away, but it was close.

Will probably stat these in a similar manner to the Rad Red Ghouls with little tweaks to differentiate, maybe having them appear and disappear during combat.
Going to take a week or two off crafting and painting to get some more gaming in - after all that's why I do the crafting.
Hope you like the work so far.

Put together another encampment, vehicle, stowage and equipment.
Originally I was going for yurts (and I will still consider them that for the purposes of this game) but I used too thick a cloth on the walls which has given them a more solid appearance than I was aiming for - they can do double duty now as huts for other games.
They are made from tuna cans, cardboard, coffee stirrers and old bits of cloth.
Nuclear storage container came with the TTCombat ship I built a while ago.
The truck, oil cans and boxes are from the anyscalemodels.com and were bought a while back for another project I gave the elbow.
Trailer is scratchbuilt from card, dice, sprue and a couple of wheels from anyscale; stowage if DIY greenstuff.
If anyone wants to see the WIP pics then go to my Flickr - the folder is open to view.

Interesting selection of stuff.
-
Still look like Yurts to me. I think that the thing that throws them off, perhaps, is that yurts often have the same canvas for the roof and walls. Maybe dry brushing the tops with the same cream color of the walls would bring it all back together?
For my .02, they look good as is though. I probably wouldn't fuss with them if they were mine.

You're right. They looked better with the one coat of cheap white primer I gave them just after building.
I will just go with them for now and if I make 2 monocoloured ones later then these can be huts in my fantasy games (waste not, want not).

Dave Graffam cardcraft wooden crate, coin glued in bottom for weight, plasterers scrim for outer frame and sand for snow.

+1 :D Quite effective terrain build!
-
Thank you, making these has set me off on a bit of a tangent.
In the zone there are often groups of troops/scientists from foreign parts searching for anomalies, experimenting on locals or just out and out stealing; they will often set up a small base inside Zona Britaniya from which to operate.
I have plans to now build the base - details later as it comes together.
-
So pursuing my new line of thought about a military presence in the zone I have assembled and painted a load of mdf Jersey Barriers from the bits box - more than I need but I'm sure they'll come in handy.
Also built a cardcraft barracks, pattern free from Genet models - have added a bit of extra weathering and might still do a bit more. Not 100% sure about how this fits in but will make the final decision once everything else is completed.
I've started work on the chainlink style fencing which should be done by the end of the week then there's just a couple more bits to be done.

Continuing with the theme of spending no money I put together 2 Quonset tents for my military base from a plastic container, cardboard and 3 paper towels - quite pleased with the result.
Also needed some non-manmade scatter terrain for the icefield and wanted it to look like the anomaly creatures I painted a while back. Made from scrunched up aluminium foil and hotglue - again happy with the results and will probably make some more later.
Have now finished assembling the fencing for the military base, will post up pics once painted.

Better than fine. That is great work. I doubt I could accomplish that in 2 hours of painting. I think I'm a slow painter and the end result hardly matches the time I put into it lol
What parts went into the making?

I'm sure you would, the greatcoat, trousers and boots and leather straps were a single coat of GW Contrast paint, then painted the guns black and heads in their colours.
All the while the 3 not being painted were sat with my wife's hairdryer blowing warm air at them.
Once the bits were done I gave another coat of contrast paint to the legs, boots and straps and slapped some white on the bases.
Then a quick off white drybrush.
All 4 are Warlord German winter bodies and arms(free with Wargames Illustrated a couple of months ago I believe) with (from left to right) heads from Anvil Industries, Atlantic Wargames Les Grognard, Anvil again and Atlantic Raumjaeger).
And I've seen your work here and elsewhere so I know how good your stuff is.

Wanted some cheap fencing for the military base, considered building a fixed piece but really wanted modular to make storage easier.
Again very cheap build made from remains of MDF sprues, barbecue skewers and plasterers scrim tape; I drilled holes for the skewers to be glued into and super glued the tape to them once dry.
Put shortened poles and cut away tape on a couple of pieces so I can add breaches to the defence when I need.
Gates are just shorter pieces with card glued on.
Quick spray with black auto primer, coat of grey and a dry brush of silver and one of bronze.
Very pleased with them.

That is a great bulk set of fences. What do you use to fix the tape to the fence poles? Super glue, PVA... ? I've never played with this material, though I've recently heard its praises sung. Gotta be better than granny grating for this kind of application.

I folded the tape double as it has a greasy self adhesive on one side then used super glue to attach.
Tried PVA but it wouldn't stick to the residue on the tape.
Might be worth cleaning the tape in some way before gluing to use PVA.
It's a great material and the fences were fast to make. Will be doing some shorter ones with wooden posts for farm fields in fantasy.
-
Inexpensive, easy to build, look great, multi-use... that's just about perfect.
-
I never thought to use seam tape...brilliant!
-
I've spent some time today laying out the terrain and miniatures I've made/painted then photographing it.
Got plenty to play on for now and will be adding other pieces, but more slowly from now on.
If you want to see more click through to Flickr, there's a few more pics on there.

Bravo sir, bravo! I love it.
-
Very cool looking board
-
Thank you gentlemen.
-
Well, that came together nicely.
Hadn't seen some of those critters before. Where are the Jellyfish from?
-
Cheers.
I think all the zone hostiles but the Mantic troopers and jellyfish have been included before.
The jellyfish are from a while back, I made them for another game from some cheap toys. I was interested to see if they fit into the vibe for Zona Britaniya so put them in the picture - don't think they work for this game though.
Here's a couple of pics:

Excellent, especially the hostiles.
Altho that base needs some solid walls to blunt the freezing wind. *brrrr*

Solid walls are something I will be looking at in the future but not just yet.

Oh, I don't know, I like the Jellies. They are different and have an other world feel to them. I'd keep them for the variety of it.
Almost makes me want to create a winter terrain set! Maybe an addition on the house first, just to make sure I have the storage room lol
-
Brilliant work. Love everything you've done.
-
Looks like you are ready for a lot of great games ahead!
-
Family issues have meant no gaming for the past 5 weeks but things seems to be settling down now. I have played 2 practice games of Zona Alfa at Threat Level 1 and intend to play another at TL2 before commencing my campaign proper.
I intend to log any battle reports separately to this thread so it doesn't get too unwieldy' keep your eye out for Zona Britaniya Trotter Watch.

New recruit, Cassandra, body from a guard in Star Saga, head from Wargames Atlantic Raumjager and rucksack from Anvil.
That's the Trotter Watch crew complete.
