Title: Montrose and the Covenanters- A Field of Battle 3 Project
Post by: OB on May 27, 2020, 11:11:58 AM
I thought I'd redo my Covenantors and Montrose forces in anticipation of the release of Field of Battle 3.  FOB 3 now includes the period and Montrose's campaign might suit the Season of Battle system that comes with the rules.

The figures are all 15mm from a variety of manufacturers.  I did have to do some conversion work for Highland regular regiment pike men and to a lesser extent for the Irish.

The first post is on my blog if it's of interest.  I'll post the rest here as I go.

A few more done now, four more so far.  I'm speeding up a bit as I'm reliably informed FOB3 has now successfully crossed the Atlantic.

Farquharson's Royalist regiment with a mix of highland and lowland troops and the Aberdeen Militia below.

Nice work.

We recently re-fought the battle of Alford - figures were rather proxied. So good to see what they should have looked like!

Thanks Fred.  I'm looking forward to the battles.  I've only ever played Kilsyth before.

I'm speeding up as FoB3 is being posted to me today.  New additions include Argyle's regular Highland Regiment, a unit of Scots Lancers and the first of Montrose's Highlanders.  These ones are MacDonalds and you can see them below.  More pics on my blog.

Field of Battle 3 has now arrived.

I've had a good read through and posted my thoughts on how the rules will handle Montrose and the Covenanters. Of course I've only read the rules so far rather than played them.   If it's of interest here's the link.

I've just got my Khurasan Montrose command pack among some other stuff today.

Montrose and an ensign and a trumpeter are all mounted, Mac Colla is on foot.  He is a biggie, trews and bonnet, sword and targe, standing taller than his men. It's this sort of eye for detail that makes Khurasan stand out for me.

I came across a useful bit of information about Alasdair Mac Colla's appearance.  According to Iain Lom MacDonald Alasdair wore a short black wig.  The two were firm friends and allies and I think the info' is trustworthy.

Maybe he had the Gaelic baldness gene?

No, fashion among the gentry I think Eoin.  Nor was Iain Lom bald despite the epithet.  It refers to his reputation fr being blunt spoken.

While researching this project I came across many quotes from Iain Lom MacDonald of Keppoch.  He was a renowned bard and a close friend of Alasdair Mac Colla and often accompanied him and the troops.  As such he offers us a Highland perspective of how battle was fought.

My latest blog in this series looks at what he can tell us about the Battle of Inverlochy where Highlander fought Highlander.  If that sounds of interest to you please click the link.

Interesting write up on Iain Lom MacDonald's poems.  Looks like you will have some fun battles with these forces.

Another bunch of units done.  I now have four of the Irish regiments complete and all the Highlanders apart from their command stands.  The Covenanters only need one more unit of infantry and now have their Dragoons.

I used some very old Naismith Scots Lancers you can see them below Montrose and Alasdair.  They have a certain character I think.  If you would like to see the rest of them please hit the link.
