I've been meaning to do this for a while. A co-operative skirmish game based on the film.
So far I've painted some Thuggees
(https://www.matakishi.net/uploads/4/0/8/7/40876893/img-1266_orig.jpg)
and some civilians.
and Gupta and his helpers.
I've also painted an animated Kali statue in case I decide to go full 'pulp'.
Some scenic pieces.

The whole plan, costing, more photos and explanations etc are on the project page here:

Like the film, like your work, therefore I will
follow this thread with interest.
-
I am SO happy that we are about to get the Matakishi treatment on one of my favorite periods :o :-* :o :-*
-
I too plan to watch this carefully. Love what you've done so far and look forward to seeing where things go!
-
Where did you get your animated Kali statue?
-
Fantastic blog write up. This is shaping up to be a really great project. Might need to get some of those Eureka civilians myself.
-
Looking good!
-
Your projects are always worth following, as they have so much character in them.
Keep up the good work sir.
-
Where did you get your animated Kali statue?
Crooked Dice.
-
Thanks Paul, saw your reponse on the blog post or FB.
-
Simply superb stuff!! :-* :-* :-*
I've been a 'follower' of your website for many a year now and I think you can count me as a fan :)
-

-
Yes, Youre back!
Lovin it!

I’ve been following Matakishi for more years than I can remember. Awesome site, beautiful execution on every project, we are in for a real treat for one of my favorite periods.
-
Another Matakishi project! Can't wait to see where this goes. :o
-
A lovely project Paul. Good luck with this.
-
Cool, Paul! Another hobbyist lost to the NWF. :-)
-
Such encouragement! I only hope you won't all be disappointed.
The train passengers: From left to right: Peters (the arms dealer), Bridie (Government official), Prince Kishan (the Prince), Catherine Wyatt (the Prince's governess) and Van Leyden (the journalist).

Love it
-
I'm sure I've seen this movie, I remember Herbert Lom being in it. But I don't recall there being any gigantic statues of Kali parading around. I thought that was The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. Oh well, my memory is not what it was...
Looking forward to seeing more. Especially the train. :)
-
This looks very interesting. Can I ask where is the Prince Kishan miniature is from?

An excellent start to a great project. :-* :-* :-*

looks fantastic - have you checked out the Wargames Atlantic plastic Afghans yet - I have bought a box but not opened yet.

No, I hate plastic figures and avoid them whenever possible :)
-
I think the WA Afghans wi look very slender compared with the chunky Pulp figures.
They're nice, but on the slender and willowy side.
-
Looking great, Matakishi! I will be following this with interest.
Slightly off topic, I'm reminded of an Afghan joke;
A Pakistani man was talking with an Afghan. He said, "you Afghans are crazy - you have a Ministry of Railways even though you have no Railways!". The Afghan replied, "Your country has a Ministry of Justice!"
-
Looking just fine. Really enjoy your web page and your projects....quite inspiring. :-*
-
This film is on Talking Pictures TV in the UK right now as I'm typing this. I switched the TV on and saw Lauren Bacall sitting in an old fashioned railway carriage and thought "hang on a minute, I know what this is..."
-
My Perry miniatures have arrived, this completes the miniatures part of the project.
I must say, the casting on these is frightful. I'm finding extra flash at every stage, even after I went through everything and thought I'd caught it all.

I haven't even looked at the cavalry.

I've decided to buy (re-buy, they were my first ever historical miniatures) the Foundry Afghans.
You can follow my daily updates here:

Paul, what's the base colour? Spray or brush?
-
I feel your pain regardig flash ( and mould lines) no matter how good a job I think I've done with my files and craft knife I always, without fail, find some more when I'm in the middle of painting a miniature usual in some hard to reach spot between an arm and a weapon or between the legs >:(
-

Maybe it's just my bad eyesight, but I have come to accept that undercoating is initially a stage that has the purpose of pointing out all the mould lines I have missed during the clean-up stage. I always seem to be able to see them better once there is paint on the figure. After they are dealt with then I get to the "second" undercoat. :)
I have had some Foundry figures in the past that had some pretty bad mould lines (double ones too, which common wisdom always assigns to re-casters, but these were bought direct from Foundry). Though for flash and the like I'm with you on the Perrys, Paul, I always seem to find Perry figures to be the worst culprits.
-
Paul, what's the base colour? Spray or brush?
I brush paint with Dulux colour matched to Foundry Base Sand 5B the wash with Coat D'arms flesh wash.

Thank you.

A must I think due to the 'flash' (mostly mould channels) with many of the Perry ranges; due to the sheer volume of casting they do- it's hard to replace moulds at that rate.

I've always found that the extra metal that needs removing from the Foundry miniatures is easier to remove due to Foundry using a softer metal. There's a lot of Pewter in the Perry Castings compared to that of Foundry.

The sad reality of that joke is that it is an example of “pot calling the kettle black”.
Ok, with that derail of the way, I’ll also be following this thread.

I really love the Second Afghan War Perry range; especially the Afghans. There's a real sense of purpose in the firing poses and the charging mini's are some of the best I have ever seen as regards to posture etc 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Still going strong.
Sikhs which will be possible reinforcements for the train.

British and Sikh officers including Captain Scott. I'll use the rest for something, maybe I'll expand this into a general skirmish setting after everything for the train game is complete.

Wow, this project is coming along really well. (Like most of your projects.. ;))
I especially like the diversity of miniatures and lots of civilians. :-*
-
Jesus, Paul, you are cranking these out at an alarming speed! Makes me cover in shame, realising how slow I am in taking my Wazirs and Afridis to completion.

Lovely stuff mate :-* :-* :-*
Great to see that the Perry sculpted Foundry Afghans go so well together with the new Perry Afghans so well.
-
Nice collection! :-*
-
Great stuff Paul. I've got all those figures - from about 20 years ago lol
They have stood the test of time amazingly well.
I'm obviously going to have to paint a shedload more in another resurrection project once the Perry plastic set arrives ::)

I decided to paint a few British infantry and a gun so I can expand this into a general skirmish game later.

Some great looking items for your game.
Ironically I went down the same route last year, using the train and the same station for my ww1 East Africa games in 28mm.
I was happy with the results. I’m sure you’ll feel the same when you get yours to the table.

Proper job!
I think I'd find it hard to resist the temptation to put a face on the front of the engine, mind. :)
-
Looking forward to seeing how the train comes out.
-
As am I, I have one on the MDF pile although it has been assembled and I would love to hear of Matakishi's paint scheme. My intention is to have it on a rubber plantation in Malaya.
Looking forward to seeing how the train comes out.
-
Great work! This is a beautiful project

Thanks all. The train's going to be basically black so it won't be that exciting.
Talking of exciting here's some thrilling railway track.

Do you have any half curves?
I was thinking that if you want to do the scene where they catch up with the
refugee train you will need them.
(really I just want to see your usual wonderful job done on the refugee train.)

(really I just want to see your usual wonderful job done on the refugee train.)
I was going to get some curves but decided I didn't want to cut the track beds for them.
I won't be doing the refugee train, it's only there to show the massacre and I don't have any bodies. This isn't a recreation of the film, it's just based on the film. There will be lots of encounters that aren't in the film and some from the film (like the bridge) that won't be included in the game.

I painted the station.

That looks real nice how much extra work do you do to make it look less like laser cut MDF? I've tried a couple of MDF kits but often I find I can't quite hide the fact its MDF, after painting, those blasted brown edges and connecting tabs just seem to stand out.
-
:o :o :o
Wow! Is that one of your 'cork' models?

I tiled the roof, MDF roofs are horrible. Then I added a small amount of filler over the corner joins, just a light smear- enough to blend the MDF tabs in to the walls. It probably took ten minutes tops.
-

No, it's an MDF kit. Arches are a bit of a pain to cut in cork.

Never fail to find something of value in Matakishi projects even if not my personal interest. Love this project and the use of Matt household paint as undercoat...genius😉

Apart from the metallic paint on the rails, everything here is painted with household paint.

Colour me impressed :-* :-* :-*

Very nice, Paul! :-*
Really like all the civilians you included in the project... gives it character.
The locomotive and train came out great, and put all together, yet one more wonderful matakishi extravagance. :-*
-
Lovely!
I am looking forward to getting stated on my Suakin–Berber railway project …
You might cross-post in Railway Wargaming ;-)

Amazing stuff! Another outstanding Matakishi project! You always set the bar and motivate me to do better with my own projects.

10 out of 10, yet again.
Keep up the good work :)

Lovely work, the whole thing looks superb, well done. :-*
-
Champion!
I think sometimes those MDF buildings are somewhat unsatisfactory, but with a little extra work that station has turned out lovely.
-
I think sometimes those MDF buildings are somewhat unsatisfactory
I agree, which is why I tend to make my own, that way they can still be unsatisfactory but at least I've had the fun of designing them.
This time I went for the station because I was buying the train and tracks (I certainly wasn't making my own train or tracks) and it was there, looking quite nice.
I'm happy with the result.

Right then, some extras.

I'm in love with this project. Both the lads from Scotland and the tiger have turned out very well. Just curious, have you done or will you do any Britannia Pathan tribesmen? I'd love to see them with your brushwork. Keep up the excellent work!

Some Britannia Afghans to follow.
-
Wonderful, Paul! For me it feeld like this old movie "In 80 days around the world", which I first saw - translated - when I was a kid. I wonder where Phileas Fogg is??? And the Balloon... ;)
-
My apologies for missing that. I'll look forward to seeing them.
-
Just have to base them.
-
Well this is certainly turning out to be another great project - always good to see Britannia miniatures too.

The Britannia Afghans. I think this lot really does mean the project is finished except for the rules and some game markers (coal, food, water, ammunition etc).

An impressive looking force. The Britannia group turned out very well indeed! Now, can we hope for some AARs soon?

Your projects are always inspiring.
Great job as ever Paul.

Always worth having a look at what you have/are... done/doing.
Please keep it up.

Its been a fun project to keep an eye on. I think you and I have different ideas of extended project though you've knocked out an incredible amount of stuff in less than three months my projects go on for years and aren't often as productive as this one ;)

I like to get stuff done in two months if I can. Three months runs the risk of getting distracted :)

It’s always a pleasure to see what you are up to sir. As usual, high quality and inspirational.
My project time frames and output are more Diablo Jon’s.
Looking forward to what you come up with for rules.

looking great - now that I have some time on my hand can I pop over to see these guys in the flesh?

Britannia Camel Corp.
It's taken me 14 years to get around to painting these and I no longer have any Sudan armies so they've been transferred north.

Way to go Matakishi, they look great! How’d you know it was 14 years? I’ve got tons of unpainted stuff, but that’s my retirement plan, lol.

My Sudan project was in 2006. I keep a list of what I do.

Never seen those Britannia camel-wallahs before. Britannia's colonial stuff is a regrettable blind-spot in my knowledge, though I did play with their 20mm WWII ranges a fair bit way back in the day. Though of course I may well be talking through my hat, as I do possess a couple of Sudan forces I bought from yours truly. I was under the impression that they were Redoubt, but maybe I have owned a bunch of Britannia stuff all along. :)
You know what, I think I may well get them out for some solo-gaming this weekend. It's over two years since I actually played anything. So great job, Paul, and thanks for reminding me I have a couple of Matakishi armies who haven't been played with for way too long.

All the miniatures you got from me were Redoubt except for (possibly) a pair of Copplestone Bromheads.
It would be nice to see the old boys in action again, take photos!

Knew there would be more! ;)
Great additions! :-*

Will do, Paul!
I really like those two Bromheads. I did not know they were Copplestone sculpts, but now I look at them I can totally see it. He seems to have some talent, that lad. He'll go a long way if he applies himself. ;)
