Title: Yet Another Old World Project (Skull Pass + Terrain)
Post by: scatterbrains on June 09, 2020, 03:13:20 PM
Stumbled upon this on Chinese equivalent of e-bay and just couldn't resist! Going to play this with a friend (and paint it of course) and hopefully use the minis to start play testing my own idea of what a fantasy war game should be (because who doesn't have his/her own idea of what a fantasy war-game should be?)

But first, assembly, clean-up and painting. Will use this thread as a log to remind myself to do something so I can at least post a message once a week.

Day 1 (well 3 really it spent the first 2 sitting on the living room table while I thought about what to do)

Night goblins, terrain, markers and dwarf wagon assembled.

Cool! So, what is the Chinese equivalent of ebay?

Its Taobao's(淘宝) second hand store app Xian Yu (闲鱼)

Had to get a coworker to help me buy it though. Taobao works fine for foreigners in China but Xianyu cant seem to buy something without a chinese ID. At least i havent found a way yet.

3 hours into this and so far its all about them mould lines.

Maybe 1/3 of them scraped off ... Rage against the machine is helping.

It isn't the Old World without a green table and a farmhouse to protect.

What better place to start then the old farmhouse from Warhammer Townscape!

It was looking pretty small when i printed it from the PDF file so I had to extract the pictures, separate them and enlarge them before getting started.
I'm mounting it on cardboard and tiling the roof to give it some pop.

Love those old buildings. Nothing says Oldhammer like the massive x4 roof tiles!

Great set. I've got a ton of the mono pose dwarfs and goblin spear.

Great project! And I really like the trees you have lurking in the background.

What a great find! Lucky you!

I wish you much joy with this project and I will definitely pop by this thread to see "The Old World" in action :)

Should you find yourself having problems coming up with rules I recommend having a look at "Warlords of Erehwon". I just ordered the book myself.  Partly because I was up for buying a nice hardback and partly because... well, it's Rick Priestley!

I'm planning on using Dragon Rampant to bring back the Old World to my group.

Didnt expect so much interest! It will definitely help me keep me on track! I havent painted miniatures yet because still finishing a frostgrave warband first but will have an old school easy to make table with stepped hills and such ready soon!

Love those old buildings. Nothing says Oldhammer like the massive x4 roof tiles!

Hah, I didnt realize my roof tiling style was typically oldhammer until you mentioned it! It just felt right making it that way, now I know why thanks.  :D

Great set. I've got a ton of the mono pose dwarfs and goblin spear.

Yes they are! Just the right balance between monopose and variety I feel! The basic goblin spears have 6 or 7 different sculpts I think which gives a great sense of unity without looking like chess pawns. Love em.

Great project! And I really like the trees you have lurking in the background.

Cheers Rick, I think I followed the Beasts of war tree tutorial mostly, there's a bit of a step by step on my Ghosts of the Shadow Grave topic. Mostly needs very thick green scouring pad (I have a roll of it) and I drybrushed some pale yellow for highlights (Naples yellow) to make them pop. They are lurking there waiting to be rebased  :D

Thank you historiker, joy is exactly what I'm looking for in this project! And I'll definitely check out Erehwon if I get stuck!

I'm planning on using Dragon Rampant to bring back the Old World to my group.

Is that the osprey rules? What are they like? I've played very little of anything to this day but love the esthetics of oldhammer.

Great thread! I'm looking forward to seeing those hardy dwarfs and sneaky goblins in action!

Me too! Believe it or not these are the first dwarves I've ever owned and the battle report from the orc and goblin 5th edition book my friend owned with the fanatics and hardy dwarves seems to have remained what my mind feels fantasy should look like.

Although big for a slate or clay tile, in fairness it probably would be about right for a wooden one.

Fantastic addition to the town house, I've been thinking of printing them out as well, but the roof tiles really adds to it.

Battle for skull pass is one of the best sets GW out for WFB, even with the some of the issues with the dwarf sculpts! Always wished I'd picked a 2nd copy up when I had the chance. Those goblins are superior to the multipart set, they have some lovely additions to them like pouches and moon belts that are absent from the multipart set. The terrain in it is superb as well.

Not gonna lie it was gonna be slate or clay, wood only for the tool shed so yes they are very big! Still debating color ... My last build has blueish tiles but oldhammer is more red clay i feel?

Heads up if you decide to print them out, they fairly small, i had to separate them from original pdf.

Also I think no more tiles for a while I've had my fill  o_o

I tend to forget how i paint things so this time im writting it down.

Undercoat: Umber

Basecoats as an overbrush letting some undercoat show through:
burnt siena for the redish tiles.
Hookers green for the shed and some random tiles on big roofs,
Paynes grey for some random tiles on the middle roof.

Highlight drybrush:
Mix burnt siena+yellow ochre+ naples yellow about equal parts (red tiles)
Mix Burnt Umber + naples yellow (hookers green tiles)

Final light highlight everywhere:

Pure naples yellow.

I  : :-* Naples yellow

I love it! You've really elevated the card stock terrain.

Are you planning on just sticking to the core set armies or are you thinking of expanding them/adding other armies in time?

Thanks mate glad you like it! Certainly saves the time of planning, texturing and painting windows, doors and walls! I added a base to it and its as far as ill go.

As for the rest i have to take it one step at a time ... But i have an unfinished skaven army back at my parents house and some russian foreforge  heavy infantry here that could be sorta Kislevites?

Priority is core set though. To get the feeling of finishing something. (Have a frostgrave warband to finish first)

Time for a progress report, nothing finished I'm afraid. You can see what I'm using as grassland tiles is carpet.

I'm doing some test undercoats and painting on 4 spearmen and making a second building (still from oldhammer townscape) but this time with a removable roof so I can put things in it.

The carpet tiles I've used before for Rangers of Shadow deep but I also cut some here to make Oldhammer style stepped hills. You can color the sides with markers too which is nice.

Nice work mate!
Thanks mate! It's always nice getting a little comment ^.^

Finished the test models, i think i like the git on the left which started with a white undercoat. It made the shield and rope easier to paint and the rest not noticeably more difficult. But im not 100% on a method yet.

Letme know what you think.

Yeah I like the guy on the left a lot. His 'belt' really stands out more and helps with breaking up the grey of the robe.

Are you gonna flock the bases or leave them with the (is that Dark Angel Green) paintjob?

Post by: scatterbrains on June 30, 2020, 11:34:23 AM
Cheers mate, yes im going to base them but they are so short i dont want to use my usual mix it would hide half their legs lol!

And thats 'hookers green' Mon Marte satin acrylics. Maybe dark Angels green is Hookers green good to know!

I think ill keep the rims that color as a recall to oldhammer  :D

Very nice painting in those goblins. What did you use for the shadows on the skin? I'm seeing hints of purple.
I like the leftmost goblin best as well as his spear and rope belt pop the most. However, I like the dirty robes on the second from left the best.
Thanks for sharing your work.

Shure mate it'll help me remember too!

All the robes had a coat of dark grey (personal mix Matt Black, White ink and yellow) which i guess is a dark warm grey? Depending on base-coat I left some black showing or covered it all up. The one with the dirty robes had a wash of Vallejo smoke ink instead of Nuln oil like the others. Then I highlighted normally adding white to the original base mix.

Skin I can hardly tell myself unless I  look hard but I did use a different shade wash on each model: Reikland Fleshshade, army painter red, army painter purple and army painter soft tone. Basecoat was Vallejo game color heavy grey (which i find to be quite green ...) highlighted with white and yellow. One of those guys I highligted with white and electric blue ... I might do a combination of both on some characters to make em look more fun not sure yet it is more work and they are small.

Good, another recipe I won't forget ^.^

gosh, those buildings came out  a treat.

I guess I go for the white undercoated gob too - but they all look good.

Scatterbrain, those flock covered kids jigsaw mats are genius! I think I will steal that idea.

It looks like my daughters nursery might be lacking some floor coverage in the next few days lol

Hahaha you might want to reconsider scavenging your daughter's nursery! These arent flocked, they come with the carpet texture on them! Not sure how well flock would stay on them as they are VERY flexible! I'd share a link to a shop but I'm in China it probably wouldn't help.

This is taking longer than I remembered! Getting there little at a time.  Also wasted a lot of time messing with plaster of Paris for something unrelated. Climate here is making it hard no matter how I do it.

Progress on archer regiment and removable roof of second building:

Different colors on this roof for variety, not sure my chimney cover makes any sense but hey ... Its fantasy.

Thanks Bloggard, yeah i think it tricks the brain. Roof is the first thing you see looking down at the table and the eye picks up textures. I bleleive it then basicaly tells your brain that the rest of the building also has it even though its actually flat.

Thanks Rick and DeafNala!

It certainly is great fun to do and i'm glad it's fun for a few to follow as well   :D

And here is the first finished regiment! I may have to cut a few more corners for the rest of the box, this took quite a few hours! But i think this will be my front row standard.
