Title: Drapeaux, Guidons and where do you find them........?
Post by: TheDilfy on June 19, 2020, 05:00:40 PM
Dear LAF, I've made some in-roads ( translate to good guesses on some) for Drapeaux and Guidons for my TYW French but I could do with help on resources and where to find them (and access them) (books, web etc). I have Thion, MW and WI articles Allen, Ede-Borrett, Auderath, Lynn, Parker etc and some Spanish works on the way.

Aside the Vieux Corps units and even some of the petit-vieux Corps units (see these as permanent units), through a number of sources,  Colonel's (mestre de camp) of regiments would often use their coat of arms as the colours for the drapeau of the unit they were commissioned to, for example Turenne, Sirot etc. In effect they were heraldry inspired. There seemed a "movement" as well, towards a standardised way of portaying the colours: Of a Argent Cross per Quarterly (white cross with four quarters), usually the flags are multi-coloured and those regiments that had received blanc drapeau would have another flag aside the Colonel's (and / or  region flag i.e. Piemont) of a Argent Cross blanc per quarterly as directed by the King (or generally his second in command the Cardinal probably passed on the communique to the mestre de camp). But not always (Ecoassais Argent Saltire instead of Argent Cross).

I'm after any information towards Savoy, Swiss ( I have details for Roll but after Molondin (I think I might scrape up a standard for this unit), Watteville - this French Burgundian family had a regiment during the Napoleonic era, alas no details of the flag I can find), German, and would like to understand if regiments from regions such as Burgundy (tended to side with the Spanish during this time), Franche-Comte, Lothringian & Lorraine be more inclined towards German flags and or more towards French flags respectively, same goes for those from Liegeoise (more inclined towards Dutch or French)? Another regiment that is frustrating me is Persan (Persian) - this fought in quite a few well known battles but I can't find any info. on the units flag.

Any help greatly appreciated! :)

p.s

Apologies in the first instance for - please delete as applicable - (1) my summary, (2) you've asked/answered this question / request for more info a million times before, (3) you're already bored, (4) what an ejit doesn't he know there's little or no info on this subject.  :o
