Dwarves of Mount Dolmed
‘A warlike race of old were the Naugrim, and they would fight fiercely against whomsoever aggrieved them: servants of Melkor, or Eldar, or Avari, or wild beasts, or not seldom their own kin.’
The Silmarillion, JRR Tolkien
Depending on how you look at it, this has either been a very long or very short project. The inspiration for this was jointly the dwarves of Tolkien’s Middle Earth and the wonderful Saxon/Viking-inspired dwarf miniatures sculpted by Colin
Patten. I bought about 30 of the original Vendel Miniatures dwarves around 2002 intending to run a Moria campaign, only to paint half and resign them to strtorage. However, in 2020 I started to take note of the smashing Conqueror Models range of dwarves (also sculpted by Colin Patten) and bought some packs to add to the warband. Over the last few months I’ve been able to get them all done; checking out my copy of the Silmarillion, I decided to theme them as the dwarves of Mount Dolmed from the First Age of Middle Earth (although Tolkien does not mention any of their names, so all the captions below are my own.)
Figures are mostly Vendel (now available from Thistle and Rose in the USA) and Conqueror Models. There are a handful of other manufacturers in there which I hope you will have fun spotting - I raided the bits box for any dwarflike models to make up the numbers! I used LBM Oathmark shield transfers and banners from Northstar (as well as the fab Oathmark metal dwarf characters) to speed things up.
The mountain photo background is a printable download from Jon Hodgson.

They look fantastic.
-
Downright gorgeous, James. Proper job :-*
-
Thank you all - I’m really glad you like them.
I’ve sent them straight into action in a solo game to try to remove a bunch of orcs from the snowy slopes of Mount Dolmed. The king has bought it already - curse of the new paint job!
-
Absolutely superb.
-
Truly epic looking dwarves mate! Really enjoy seeing your work, inspirational.
-
Superb! An excellent force and fab painting.
-
Damn, hope there's an heir to the throne! Cant let a beautiful clan fall apart for lack of leadership!
-
Just come across this thread - awesome work :-* A truly inspired theme for a dwarf army. Cannot wait to see more of your Mount Dolmed campaign.
-
They are magnificent! Threre is so much character to this army.
-
Excellent work, some of the nicest dwarves I've seen.
-
Love it. Really feels like Middle Earth to me.

Thank you everyone. Seems everyone loves a dwarf!
Just added a new battle report on this page - the newly painted figures won (although Nundir got decked by an orc champion)...
-
Your dwarves are excellent!
-
Well done, congrats!
-
Great work. I’ve got a load of these models as well, but nowhere as well painted as these. I think the conqueror set are the best dwarf models about
-
Fantastic dwarves, and very Middle Earth. Thanks for posting.

I've been thinking about dwarves lately: Should I or shouldn't I?
Another look at your efforts and I think I have no choice but to get to the forges and start work.

Thank you. Just do it! That’ll probably result in me buying more dwarves further down the line...

James, maybe a long shot but do you have any of the Hasslefree Dwarves? I am wondering how they compare with the Conqueror and Vendel.

None, I’m afraid, but I bet someone on here does!
