Bronze Age Winter Fantasy.
This is a parallel thread to my Bronze Age Winter War thread on the Age of gods, myths and empires board.(https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=125281.0)
I know that a certain amount of fantasy is ok on that board but as i was not sure where this slightly Runequest/Glorantha and Micheal Moorcock/Rodney Mathews inspired journey was leading i thought it was better to split it.
These Minifigs tunnel elves are the 1st miniatures i ever bought in 1978 when i was 12 years old and this is the 3rd time i have painted/repainted them.
I have replaced the original shields and also the crossbow as the original was bloody awful.

I have just picked up a few more of these from ebay but they are also available again directly from Minifigs.
This giant is from the CMON Blood Rage boardgame. I painted it a couple of yeras ago but decided it fitted better in this setting so i have rebased it and repainted the rock.

Here is how it looked before.

Nice 8)
It’s good to have off shoots of a main project. Gives it a bit more impetus :)
-
Wow! Those tunnel elves look fantastic - bravo!
-
Super cool, your sets are amazing.
-
Always loved that giant miniature - yours might be my favorite painted version, nicely done!
-
Thanks again.
Just got these translucent miniatures from Reaper. I have never got miniatures finished so quickly :D base them and done!!

Gorgeous looking minis.
I particularly like the minimalist painting on the new Reaper minis... :P
More seriously, though, that some great painting and a nice set up for the photography as well.
Personally I find it hard not to paint the translucent minis and just leave them as is. Ideally I'd like to put a bit of paint on them to detail them a bit but still leave parts translucent. I haven't figured out how to do it to my satisfaction, though, so so far I just end up painting them as normal.
-
Strange I thought I'd posted a reply ... my connection must have failed!
+1 on your photography setup, it's worthy of some pro quality toy photography stuff, you mind sharing what kind of camera and lens you're using?
-
Nice work on the Elves. The "set-in scene" pictures are brilliant.
-
Great thread, keep going :)
Thanks also for reminding me about that Frost Giant, just picked one up for my own purposes.
-
Good as always but your scenic photographs give your work an extra dimension 8).

I found this fantastic artwork on Artstation by Alexandre Chaudret - https://www.artstation.com/artwork/QK8r - and i knew i had to see if i could build something similar.
Have any of you been inspired by some non-hobby artwork and tried to build it?

I had a Wargames Atlantic skeleton sprue lying around that was the perfect start. I added robes using tissue paper soaked in PVA glue and dark brown paint and some fur out of greenstuff. Paint comes next.

Superb! Loving the wraiths now as well.
-
What a great project, and find painting all around! I really like the scenes you've set up. Glad to see the tunnel elves. I have been eyeing some of the old Minifigs range for a while. I didn't realize they were so short. The undead look like they're going to turn out really well too. Looking forward to seeing more.
-
Fantastic scenes!
-
I love this thread,very original 8)
-
Those Greek wraiths look awesome, looking forward to how they look with some paint :)
-
Got them finished and very happy with the result (especially with the red colour), but for some reason the orange highlights dont seem to show up in the photo. Doesn't matter, i am still satisfied. :D

Superb! And what a wonderful thread!

The artwork is certainly inspiring - you’ve done a great job with the undead, love the deep red but the weathering on the shields & helms is excellent.

Started work on the 1st mounted miniatures for this collection. Mountain tribes cavalry.
The riders are Victrix armoured celts (one has a Frostgrave barbarian head), italian shields and the beasts are plastic Mage Knight miniatures that i got cheap on ebay.

flipping heck, fantastic stuff all 'round in this thread :-*

Just got these translucent miniatures from Reaper. I have never got miniatures finished so quickly :D base them and done!!
Thanks! Without this, I wouldn't be brave enough, not to paint the translucent Reaper minis! Maybe I will try a light drybrush in a very bright green, to make the details a bit more visible.
-
The new miniature is a Frostgrave barbarian body with Victrix head and shield.

Very cool.

Great work here.
I love this ancient-fantasy feeling in your work.

Absolutely superb stuff here!

Great kitbashing on that barbarian

Very effective paintwork.

I did it, and I think it looks pretty good! Its still translucent, but the drybrushing makes the details much more visible:

(Basing is not done yet, and there is glass varnish on them, matte comes later)

Loving this whole thread, by the way. Those wraiths are terrific.

Looks great! A unit of 10 of these doesn't look to cost that much either. easy unit to achieve in an evening.
Did you wash them as well or just a dry brush over the plastic? Did you to any sort of clear sealant on the plastic first for the paint to stick to or just paint straight onto the plastic?
-
What a wonderful thread. Nice conversions and wonderful pictures.

The plastic of Reaper should bond to acrylic paints well, so I drybrushed it directly (in 3 steps) and after that sealed it with varnish (with brush, because the solvents in a spray bottles can damage the plastic). I didn't use a wash, because I think it would have made it less translucent. Its really only 5 minutes pro miniature, its insane quick.
Additionally I want to coat it matt after basing.

Don't use a wash on the reaper bones stuff unless you've covered the area in paint already, at least with the green translucent ones. I've tried and it doesn't work that well because it doesn't stick right. A lot of inks don't stick right either and you get a mess in the end.

Sometimes paint also doesnt want to bond. Its like the surface were hydrophobic (Im washing them always before painting). I dont know why, but seems, that the more the paint is watered down, the more likely it will happen. Thats why Im always priming them, altough theoretically not needed...

Priming on the Bones is one that can also be a pain in and of itself.
Washes, inks, and if you thin your paint to much for your first layers creates some issues. From what I've heard the Bones Black stuff has less of an issue there, but not entirely sure since I tend to start with a flat, light grey over the mini and a lot of the basing materials at the same time, normally sand and such.
There's a really good thread on the Reaper forums about tests that people have done with different things on Bones material that's been updated quite often for different things.

Unfortunatly i have had very little time for the hobby during the last year and was also lacking in motivation. Although i have been either wargaming or playing (pen and paper) rpg's for around 43 or 44 years now, i luckily never completely lose interest in the hobby. :)
Havent painted anything for a while but at least got some photos taken.

Cool spider and I see Elsa is also helping out ;)
-
That’s beautiful work! The scene really tells a story. I don’t like the party’s chances unless the gods have provided them with some gifts to help them out (coals from Hephaestus’ forge, maybe…).
-
That's an excellent little scene, very atmospheric.
-
a really cool (pun) scene and pic. ;)
Great work
-
The photography in the thread is stunning! I hope your work has been featured in magazines or rulebooks, because it deserves to be!

I love what you did here! And Elsa is a nice joke, but, man, those minis, the photography…everything is awesome!
-
Brilliant work across the board… excellent subject material, kitbashing, painting and photography! 🏆

Very atmospheric - is that the Schleich ice spider?

Thanks. Yes, it is the ice spider (Eis Spinne) from Schleich.
-
I'll eco the statements above great photo! I hope those heros are beloved of the gods are this will be a quick fight.
-
This project is fantastic. Basically bringing to life what I'm in the midst of working on for an EIR-themed Frostgrave/Rangers of Shadowdeep campaign. Hope mine ends up looking half this good.
Agree on the white drybrush for Reaper ghosts. Turns out great.

Thanks everyone.

Elsa is the evil sorceress who conjured up the spider. She is obviously evil, works for Disney lol

Do not say the dark ones name. To metion Disney, is to attract it's eye. ;)

I use Corundum sand for snow. It is used by dental laboratries for sandblasting something or other ( any dentists out there?)

This is the Games Workshop Lady Olynder miniature from the Age of Sigmar Nighthaunts. Lovely figure.
It is the first GW miniature i have bought since the Kroot were released about 15+ years ago.
I have converted it a little.

Thank you! I did some web searches, and am wondering whether it might be fused alumina? Anyway, I suspect that one would have to handle it very carefully, to preclude health issues...
-
Gosh, that is oozing atmosphere!
-
Top notch! And now I am really intrigued about this GW mini…say what you want about them, but from time to time you can still feel real character in some of their minis!
-
Almost like a Goddess of the underworld.

Some more Tunnel elves from Minifigs "Aureola Rococo" series from the late 1970's.
These are partly converted. Greenstuff cloaks, new shields and changes to their helmets.
