Working on five mumaks for my Middle Earth collections. One will be stock out of the box but all the rest have modifications to beast and/or howda as well as the crew. So far this project has required a band saw, many uses of a power drill, and drawn some blood.
-
the most ambitious is the Far Harad conversion. A mix of heavy card, round and oval plastic bases, bamboo kabob sticks, Renedra fence, and bits from Foundry Masai and Frostgrave Tribals. Crew will be converted Tribals and GW Half Trolls.
-
This one has ballista in the sponsons. Weapons are from Vendel via Sgt Major. Crew castings were so bad I had to bin them but the weapons turned on well I think. New crew from Wargame Factory Persians. I'm using some Wargame Atlantic Persians for crew on some mumaks.
-
This one won't look too different until paint and crew - it is for the Harad King.
-
Very nice. Good to see them being adapted.
-
Inspirational!
-
Superb, these will look so good when painted up. Great work. :-*
-
Can’t wait to see the project finished!
Wow
-
Some head poses:
-
Modifications: added some armor to the king's beast, detail is a bit soft but I think shading individual scales will bring it out. Also some ankle spikes, a tusk weapon, and Persian shields on one howdah. I added magnets to the front platform and the base of the beast handlers, strong enough to keep the handler in place during most game play.
-
Work continues: Beast Master conversions based on Frostgrave GA Tribals. The idea of 5 identical beast masters at $15 each doesn't work for me.
The trunks included don't work for any head pose other than the unmodified head down. So after a few failed experiments a member of the GBHL Facebook group suggested using two part resin and bending it before full cure. It worked better than I expected.
-
Ye gods.
They will shake the very ground!
Can't wait to see them finished.
-
Great work mate! Coming along nicely.
-
Finished the modified heads including custom trunks and various types of tusk weapons. Far Harad beast has a one broken tusk, a mark from one of his many dominance contests with other bulls.
-
This is an impressive project! I like the way you’re converting and replacing. Looking forward to seeing more.
-
Some thoughtful conversions - keep going!
:)
-
a lot of work. I am looking forward to seeing the finished result
-
Painted the first stock crew, primarily with Contrast. Gotta crank out 65 crew to support this project so they don't get the slow treatment, at least not for the stock crew. Also airbrushed base coat and beginning shade and highlight on the beasts.
-
After four major changes / redesigns I've finally settled on a howdah structure and decoration for the "Far Harad" primitive crew.
-
Epic!
-
Took a break from the big models to paint a few individual figs. These are the Frostgrave GA Tribals converted to be Mahud Beastmasters. The fifth is the "official" figure which will be painted with the King's guard in his colours.
-
They look great!
-
...and drawn some blood.
I hear you Brother Abbner. The Godess of the Hobby requires her tribute.
-
I recall a Forge World Chaos Mammoth conversion in White Dwarf many moons ago. I think that one involved power tools and ironmongery! Tremendous work with a nice attention to detail.
-
This project is feeling a bit of chore but the work continues. Finished painting the first model sans rigging and the base. (I'm printing bases for the other four but the stock model gets the busy stock base.)
-
Great work mate!
-
Wonderful work
-
The struggle continues - added base and rigging. Lesson learned: ink the rigging before drawing it taught and tying off. I pulled the rigging and then added thinned ink for color. The ink added a lot of slack to the string and I had to go through much effort to correct it.
Crew for #2 is complete, pics coming soon, and the howdah for #2 is about 50% complete.
-
That's really impressive work. Good tip about the inked thread too; one of those things that's perhaps clear in hindsight but you wouldn't necessarily think about at the time.
-
Great work!
-
Great work. The matting really stands out.
-
The second model, this one converted to carry light siege weapons, is ready for base and rigging. Weapons from Vendel, weapon crew and kneeling archer from Wargame Factory, rest from Wargames Atlantic.
-
Great work mate!
-
First war paint on #3. What the GW rules pretentiously call "sigils of defiance".
Close up photo reveals it needs the edges cleaned up. And that it's time for me to go up level of magnification on head gear.
-
Good job on the war paint. :)
-
Crew 3 - Wargames Atlantic save rock throwers are Wargames Factory
-
Number 3 ready for rigging, base, and final touch ups.
-
WIP Group shot - two to go
-
Wow! You have every reason to be proud of that mate!
-
Had to take a long break from this project. But back on track the past couple weeks. The King's Beast is essentially complete, just need rigging and base.
-
This brings back memories. Did one for my son when they first came out and like you repositioned the head. All that green stuff.
We added war spikes to his legs.
-
Wow!
-
Fifth and final ready for rigging, touch-up, and base. Howdah primarily stock base with Renedra fence and various cards and sticks. Crew are stock GW half-trolls and FG Tribals with Foundry Masai bits.
A long slog of a project. Started late June and need a couple more weeks to finish off.
-
Great work!

If you get a chance reply with a pic. Would love to see it.
-
They look most impressive!
-
Very nice. Great colour choice and PJ
-
One last shot of the Far Harad and group shots of all five completed and based:
-
Wow, that is quite the set of beasts! I really like the variety you were able to achieve- five ‘vanilla’ kits would still be impressive, but what you’ve done takes it to another level!
-
Absolutely brilliant work! Bravo sir, bravo!
-
That's amazing, what a brilliant job.
-
Excellent work on the conversions, really impressive to see them all together
:)
-
Very impressive :-*.
