Title: Wellington & Picton at Waterloo, PLUS: Landing Parties!
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on July 23, 2020, 11:43:58 AM
Hi, people. :)

Here's Wellington and Picton at Waterloo. 28mm figures by Warlord Games:

Thanks very much, OSHIROmodels!

Right, seeing as I'll do another Napoleonic project right away I'll repurpose this thread from being a pure Wellington/Picton thing to a slightly broader British thread.

Because the next thing that's on the table is this:

Yes, this is going to be interesting, and - so i hope - very pretty in the end. British landing parties of the 1st Foot Guards and the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

I like the Eagle being trampled under Copenhagen's hooves, I'm nicking that idea!

Yeah, well, no time for subtleties. :D There's also a bicorn lying in the dust on Welligton's base; it's a bit hard to see in the photos.

They look really nice!

That's a "boat load" of people you got there. Should be interesting to see how they come out.

@Ray Rivers: Hur hur hur. :D Two boat loads even.

Right, I think it's high time for a WIP shot of those landing parties, don't you?

What very, very, very unique kits those boats with the landing parties are. So many figures sitting so compact in a small space. So many bits I paint will never be seen again. :D Remarkable.

Well, it's lotsa work. Hope you like them so far (even though there isn't much to see yet).

Good work - although that's some damn'd polluted water they're rowing through!

Better hide that Picton before Cardiff City Council come and ban you!
Title: Re: Wellington & Picton at Waterloo, PLUS: Landing Parties!

@Baron von Wreckedoften: Well, that's the second time I got called out on "the water" there. :D

It's devilishly hot. There's a lot of other things to do but painting these chaps. And they ALL seem to be more attractive than painting these chaps. :D Moving at a glacial speed in very un-glacial temperatures. I guess I better stop complaining now and get back to painting. :P

Currently doing: highlights on the jackets of the guys at the steering rudder things.

I presume you have a game in mind that will require those two boats with soldiers in?  If so won't you have to paint them standing up as well for when they have landed?

As a model they look amazing.  As a game piece they look almost entirely pointless!  Perhaps that is why it is difficult to motivate yourself to do them
Title: Re: Wellington & Picton at Waterloo, PLUS: Landing Parties!

@jon_1066: Good point there. These are a commission job, so my only motivation is greed and getting rich quickly. :D Well, not really. By now I realized that this won't get me rich, quickly OR sowly. :D I paint these for a gentleman who every now and then outsources such projects to me. Few months ago I did that wagon of wounded soldiers for him. So maybe your point is entirely true in how I get to do the stuff for him which usually wouldn't be high up on the priorities list (or stuff which is supposed to look extra pretty. I did some guard formations for him). It's true though, somehow painting stuff like limbers and water carts is never as breezy as painting line infantry.

Howdy-ho, peeps! Hope you had a nice weekend and a good week ahead of ye.

A pretty eventful weekend lies behind me, the latter two thirds of a rainy Monday lies before me.

Here's an update:
(https://i.imgur.com/V4MZlCm.jpg)
full size image: https://i.imgur.com/V4MZlCm.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/V4MZlCm.jpg)

Last night I actually counted the dudes on those boats for the first time. Turns out it's 78 guys altogether. A very slow project, that. Unpredictable.

Before that I finally got to watch Jodorowsky's Dune. Been wanting to see it for years, finally got to. Great stuff. Made me feel all artsy and inspired and I had a whale of a time painting the crap out of the rowers' hats. :D Good stuff. I know, there's few more pathetic things than mini painters pretending to be artists (and I wouldn't), but sometimes you have a nice beer and put on something nice on the computer and things go well. Neat. Sunday nights used to be really, really good painting times for me, and sometimes that glimmers up again.

Anyway, next on the list: Those bloody greatcoat straps on the back of that NCO in the lower right of the picture! Then it's time for some good old shako- and helmsmen hats, I say!

@OSHIROmodels: Thanks very much!

@ffrum: Cheers. I think enjoying painting would be nicer, but to each their own. :D I think it all comes down to practice, a certain cheekiness in terms of "can I get away with it if i just did it like this....?", and the constant reminder that people will shout at you if you don't finish the project after the next by the end of the month. ;)

@Ray Rivers: Thank you! They better. I'm seriously running out of time.

Right, here's another update. Just cellphone photos, so bear with me.

Hope you like them! They're nearing completion, but there's still the little matter of making bases for them. Of course it looks nicer on the table without bases, but given all those oars bending and snapping in all directions it's way more sensible to have them based.

Oh, and they still need flags. And helmsmen. :D

@Mad Lord Snapcase: Thanks very much! :)

@Ray Rivers: I'm happy to announce that by now they are. Those boats turn out bloody heavy with all the dudes glued on too! It's an interesting kit. Boat's resin, and every other rower is cast onto the resin halves of the boat. The other half of the rowers are metal figures.

No time to rest on my laurels though. Already got 40k stuff in the works for someone who needs them done 2 weeks ago pretty much. So I hope you like the boats, there'll be more pictures in the future, as always they look nicer in person than in the photos, but oh well. I do what I can. All I can say is that water looks SEXY in real life. anyway, gotta finish that Eldrad, I suppose. See ya!

Lovely work.

On a small point (but probably too late to do anything about it now), if you visit this website, you will see that the drummers' lace for Royal (but non-Guards) regiments is actually yellow, the livery colour of the House of Hanover.

http://www.fifedrum.org/crfd/BD_1.htm

(Click on the AWI bearskin and look at the 4th, 8th, 18th, 21st and 23rd Foot - I know its 25+ years before your boats, but the lace would not have changed.)

Fabulous painting  :-*

It is great to see models like this being done. I suppose a lot of us would look at all the figures to paint and think, “Well that’s the equivalent of 2 - 3 battalions on the tabletop” so it would end up being a low priority.

@Ray Rivers: cheers!:)

@Roo: Thanks!

@Valleyboy: Thank you. :) A unique addition to any collection, that's for sure.

@Baron von Wreckedoften: Well, crap. :D The gentleman I did these for usually does thorough research and always gives me printed uniform plates and lots of notes along with the figures (most welcome), but I assume he didn't find about that detail and just wrote "drummer's lace as on the Foot Guards' drummer". Now I'm torn if I should tell him or not.. :D Anyway, thanks for the info and I'll keep that site you linked to in mind!

@Captain Blood: Many thanks!

@Warboss Nick: Cheers, much appreciated. :)

@armchairgeneral: Thank you, Sir! I could imagine that's one of the reasons those were outsourced to me. :D It's probably the ultimate case of "would be really nice, but at the same time I could paint three more line battalions...". That being said, these will make for nice showcase figures as well, and of course I forsee a lot of naval landing scenarios (I think the gentleman plays Chosen Men) featuring these.

@Keith: Oh, that's a very nice compliment. :) Many thanks!

Actually, I may owe you an apology.  At some point post-AWI, the design of the lace might have changed.  I'm not entirely sure if or when, and I'm checking with the two main re-enactment groups - Napoleonic in the UK, AWI in the USA.  Here are the drummers of each:-

As you can see - a clear difference; but your customer may well be right!  I'll post back what I hear.

Sadly I don't have any pictures of one of the best figures of the set: Among the soldiers each boat has one guy who took off his shako, bent over, and holds the shako like the 19th century nautical equivalent of a barf bag. Of course I painted the faces on these guys in an appropritately pale/greenish hue. :)

Anyway, hope you like the pictures!
