Title: Well look who’s in town. FFOL western gunfight.
Post by: flatpack on July 26, 2020, 08:07:25 AM
Yesterday, we got together, for our first socially safe distanced game after the lockdown.
We played outdoors, under a couple of gazebos, positioned next to the Lead Shed.
Weather forecast had improved over the week, so what could possibly go wrong, as we are talking Britain, in mid summer.....gulp.

So the background.

Dardenell County - July

For what seemed an eternity, Mal Passo had been under a lockdown. Big Boris didn’t want folk gathering in groups, but new rumours of funding for a Mexican revolution (yes, yet another) were circulating.
Groups of desperados and no gooders have been arriving in the town all week.

The Commodore (no one knew or feared ask him his name)
He brought with him, his group of old club rejects. They had been thrown out of most social clubs.

Doc Wilkinson, Doc got his name for the amount of patients he provided to the medical profession.
He came with his mysterious “Grey Lion Company” The only thing legal about them, was their name.

As for the Preacher, and his flock, they prey and not pray.

South Texas Independent Railway only has tracks as far as Mal Passo, but it’s detectives meddle just about anywhere. Who knows where the S.T.I.R what’s to extend its tracks to ?

The towns committee will be hard pressed to maintain any kind of order, but sheriff John Stone is unlikely to leave ( the various gangs) alone.

NEGOTIATION !!??!! Unlikely. The gun speaks loads for these men. It will be a case of those still standing after the gun smoke clears will be able to control where the funds (for the revolution) will go.

Background supplied by Has.Beens very vivid imagination.  :o

So Mal Passo was going to see some action.
Mal Passo real estate supplied by new comer Jamie, looking great.👍
Rules - Fistful of Lead.

Mal Passo - all quiet on Main Street.

Doc Wilkinson and his Grey Lion Company are the first to arrive in town.
(https://i.postimg.cc/s2BMHxF3/3214-DBFA-A519-4799-B27-D-FFFB0-E56-EE7-A.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Ff4F79s6)

Then The Commodore and his gang, arrive at the station, after their train was delayed due to the wrong kind of sand being on the line at Phoenix.
(https://i.postimg.cc/XvTpRW3d/6-B888-E9-A-14-C3-4-B9-B-9-FC3-E13-A030-E38-B3.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4KQfcrYx)

S.T.I.R detectives arrive at the livery yard, closely monitored by the Sheriff John Stone and his deputies.
(https://i.postimg.cc/VLR0d2BP/D1-E78329-32-B7-43-C6-BA31-1729-D84-C4-B54.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/PPC573RS)

Sheriff John Stone ask the S.T.I.R detectives, a few chosen questions, but it looks like the detectives, chose the wrong answers.
(https://i.postimg.cc/W3ghjybK/2-E0-DB747-416-B-475-E-AFD7-A188258851-F9.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/PpftQ2Dz)

Now due to some misunderstanding, sheriff Stones boys have had to lay down a little law and order on the detectives. In fact they’ve laid down two of the detectives in rapid succession.
(https://i.postimg.cc/3NhWwZkw/1-FDBCE3-A-0-F2-C-42-E4-B220-38-DC6-FE8-C15-E.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/wyW9fLcK)

Due to the Hollywood style of the FFOL rules, we thought we would bring on an ambulance at this stage, as the Detectives were really very poorly. No lead soldiers were harmed in the making of this game.
(https://i.postimg.cc/0yjjrjy7/6-B108-FD4-0-C29-487-F-A2-F1-29119-D103-AC1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/bZXpBzbv)

Doc Wilkinson was in a good position at the other end of town. He had a fine shooting position on the rooftop bar (Saloon roof)

But the Preacher had other plans, and he was looking at taking Doc Wilkinson down.

Back to the other end of town, and at this stage the Railroad Detectives had gone for an early bath, as Ian had thrown the worst dice, this side of the lockdown.

The Sheriff, now rounds the corner on the Commodore, but after a couple of shots, the Sheriff was no more.
(https://i.postimg.cc/2823zhrz/BC28-E626-B97-C-4852-A5-AF-6892-C73805-FD.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/GHTbKB4N)

The Commodore and his gang then took up a lovely firing position on the Western Union building roof - I hope that roof holds out ?
(https://i.postimg.cc/6pP3ZK8g/655-F9-F13-35-F7-4831-B0-D1-3-D09-F75-F3913.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Mnyqkhbm)

At this stage, a flash flood hit Mal Passo, as my gazebos sprung a leak.
(https://i.postimg.cc/0QRytCdC/1-E10-CFBE-8-C86-4248-AB10-2-AAC86-C2-C328.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/yJjKxcGJ)

Lunch was taken, and we all went away, full up, dice rolled, fat chewed, giggles had by all.

In the words of Bruce Forsyth “Good game, good game”

Many thanks to all for helping this to happen. It was great to get back together. Sorry some of the gang couldn’t make it, and many thanks to JC for supplying the food and drink, then throwing a sicky himself.

I’m sure the chaps that took part, will have their own take on what happened.

I will attempt to add my pictures later today, but just wanted to say
(about the downing of the Sheriff) He had a Sawd off scattergun
(Local amendment to FFoL = very short range, but deadly!)
He rounded the corner of the building & came face to face with
the commodore's men. Quickly he pulled the trigger... Out of ammo!!!!!
As he desperately fumbled to reload, BANG! To late, he was down.

As is normal at Flatpack's, good game, good laughs & good food (Thanks
for the food JC)
Honorable mentions to:- Bob, for putting it all on.
Jamie (New kid on the block) for his wonderful buildings.
By the way he did all the signage, which I am hoping he
offer copies for sale to one of the MDF building companies.
Garry for struggling in & maintaining his evil reputation.
Ian, for taking the wiping out of his gang with a grin, &
taking over the Sheriff's posse so that I could explain
(At length) that the questions asked were already answered
                                      on the QUICK REFERENCE SHEETS!!!!!!

Rather nice - though you couldn't have gone with an ACW ambulance!  lol  At least you had multiple wagons in a respectable sized town along with the stage coach.  And even some horses at the hitching racks.  But nary a single civilian in sight.  That won't do, gentlemen, it just won't - you must rectify this for your next outing.  Looks like fun.  Adding civilians just adds more to the fun!

Civilians, civilians, what are you talking about ?
They knew trouble was in town, and like we all know it LOCKDOWN TIME.
Come on catch up with the world  lol lol lol

Some more pictures.
We do have plenty of civilians, but they know that certain of our players would
consider a crowd of innocent civilians a 'Target Rich Environment'

I have seen civilians used best in a game where only the umpire
knew who controlled which figures.
Scenario was sheriff & deputies had to get bad guy from the jail,
to the wagon & out of town. A large crowd was in town, some to watch,
some to possibly lynch & some friends of the Bad man. Very tense game
& the umpire kept us all on our toes, each trying to achieve our pre-given
goals.

It's Terrible.  It's Horrible.  It's Profound.  It's an Omission!  None of your wagons or coaches have any horses!  Oh, sure, you are going to come back and say they were all hauled away out of the way of the gunfire about to erupt.  But that is an inexcusable excuse.  :o :D  Yeah, more work to do before the next outing.  lol

Very nice buildings by that newcomer.  Especially like the paint work on the barn proper.

For those not yet aware, to get a sense of my commitment to the Pony Wars/Old West - or Pony West - have a gander at my blog: https://whiskeyhills.blogspot.com (https://whiskeyhills.blogspot.com)  All a might bonkers but I'm still having a blast with it so all good.

Maybe I will adapt the VC civilian encounter tables to use alongside FFoL....may be doable.

Damn these building signs look good though........

Great looking game gents, the signage works really well.

We've played countless FFoL gunfights, some with civilians and some without depending on the scenario and we even use horseless wagons in our streets for cover and set dressing.  As the Baron mentions there is a section on civilians in the FFoL book that can be used 'as is' or added to if needed.

As to 15's posts, don't take too much notice, seems to be his usual format of  'comment, criticism, comment, plug.='  lol

I will back up the rest of my crew here and add to their thanks to Flatpack and the efforts he went to in order to host this game.

Two pop up gazebos and countless other bits and pieces. All in order to have an outdoor game in poor British weather so that we could remain 'distanced' but still enjoy a good fight.

Seems some here have taken offense to my second (and maybe my first post).  I assure you, no offense was intended.  First post was after first seeing the thread and the very nice display - I just noticed a lack of civilians, something I'm over the top about including in my collection.  Second post was after coming back to view the nice town again and realized I'd completely missed the lack of horses.  I'd rather hoped the use of emoticons would have shown I was very much tongue-in-cheek in both instances.  And there was no intent to highjack the thread - just thought a link to my blog would highlight my passion for the Old West/Pony Wars period - a passion shared by the folks in the game on display.  Reason for delay in responding is that I spent the last couple of days working on prepping a bunch more figures - including the first of two wagon trains for my collection.  I have other threads here with links to the same blog so not my intent at all.  (And also prepping another 15 battalions for my unrelated AWI project.)  Pretty much all just priming figures these days while working towards getting back into the swing of painting.  So pretty busy.

My apologies if offense was taken but none was intended.  I wouldn't have revisited the thread a second time if I didn't admire the work.

And as to the lack of horses I noticed on my second visit, that just shows I wasn't nearly as observant as I should have been the first go round.

Hijacking was common in the old west, stagecoaches and trayns mostly, so here's another one...
Civvies work great in FFofL, some of the best laughs we've had is as they scatters like hens from a fox, and get in the way of the proper shootists.
F'rinstance, The Ringo Kid and Tuco had just broken out of jail, leaving the Sheriff sprawled dead in the street, his wife, Calamity Jean, runs up and throws herself, sobbing, on her husbands body. As the two baddies stand gloating she kneels up holding hubby's Walker Colt in both hands and drills 'em through the melon before they can clear leather!
How can this be, Tuco and Ringo are D12 blokes, Calam a D7? Answer...
only Fistful of Lead can do this!!!

Has the report of  Johnny Reb's death been 'Greatly exaggerated'?
Why has the Funeral Director moved out of that big building, & who bought it?
Where did his money come from, & more important, where is it now?

Second out door Wild West game, as played at my place yesterday.
Gazebos erected the night before and here we go.
Figures 28mm from all those involved.
Special mention to Digits for more ‘non-combatants’ than you could wave a stick at. Jamie and Pete brought some ‘passers by’ too.
Buildings - fantastic - from Jamie
Scenario from the world famous Has.been.Pete
Rules Ffol, as ever.

(https://i.postimg.cc/zXvdSnZx/FBB3-C654-05-BF-4000-A9-D8-C52-D02121-DFD.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/ZCkFJvqN)

So what’s been happening in Mal Passo ?

The lockdown of Mal Passo was easing. Citizens started to be seen on the streets, wagons were moving. However amongst the innocents were several nefarious groups.

(https://i.postimg.cc/9FQk86Tt/07279145-1-F2-A-4-C74-A396-622-FD6-C642-A6.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/qgWQgZ1z)

The intervening days since the big shoot out had given time for wounds to be patched up and new gang members to be drafted in.

(https://i.postimg.cc/htwN72X8/247-D6-A64-F396-422-D-9-FD8-04783-E03-FAC5.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/FYyTMgg1)

The word was out ‘The Undertaker’ ‘He knows something’. Who is the strange moneyman buying the funeral parlour ? Where did he get all his money ? (Mexican gold ?)

So it looks like we all need to have a nice word with the undertaker, to find out where he’s getting his cash flow from ?
With this in mind, the gangs enter the town.

(https://i.postimg.cc/XvCmK95R/F668868-C-3163-4-CE1-8-F03-E29446111-C79.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Z9Jw4BVH)

So just as the undertaker is having some photos taken for a glossy new ad campaign, the gangs arrive, and once again all hell let’s loose. No time for talking, when you’ve got a gun in your hand.

(https://i.postimg.cc/1XJjRBxq/DF9-C0558-DA98-4-C7-E-813-E-E7-AAEFF66-F4-F.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/0KKfcpyk)

Hold on, what happened about talking to the undertaker?

Even more figures fall....all caught on camera.

Now, as well as the firefight outside the funeral parlour, things in town get really busy.
Here come the Women’s Institute on a day out.
(https://i.postimg.cc/jqX9hxWS/4-A6697-CC-2159-4-A50-9028-9631-AFAF790-D.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/t7s2qHtK)
Obviously demonstrating about the amount of violence in the town.

Here come the Mexicans with their sheep.

Cattle also arrive in town.

And just for good measure, here comes a wagon train at the same time.

This has trouble written all over it. Might end up like the M25 on a Friday night.

The Preacher was spreading the word, down the other end of town.
Now he classes ‘spreading the word’ by shooting anyone in the back, as soon as he sees them.
‘Gets then to heaven quicker’ he says.

The town posse , headed up by JC, did loads of running and hiding, then decided to take pot shots at the cow hands as they rode through town...very odd.

The Mexicans headed up by Digits, brought their sheep to market, then went home drunk...gulp !

The congestion in town, just got worse.

Cattle, sheep, WI, and wagon trains don’t mix.

Who spooked the cattle ?

So inclusion, the undertaken was questioned by two of the gangs.
He said his money was coming from a Mr R De-Ursine. ??? :o

He also said ‘Jonny Reb has more lives than legs’ and that ‘Doc Shultz is involved too’.

Now I ran the Commodores gang, and got this info out of the undertaker, but it meant absolutely nothing to me. It turned into a murder mystery game in the end, with an added dose of traffic congestion.

I’m sure the other gang leaders will add their comments......

Many thanks to all parties involved.
It was good to get together and roll some dice.

Once again, looks great. Love the herd of longhorns being driven through town. And you even had genuine Tex-Mex temperatures to accompany your game ;)

Some overviews of the game at the start.
Given the scenario briefing, i.e. The Undertaker has some information,
I was expecting people to TALK first. Maybe shoot later. To encourage this
it was stated, that as players were trying to hide amongst the townsfolk,
guns would start the game holstered & shotguns 'broken'.
In the entire game only two (out of five) players talked to the Undertaker.
They were given the name of the mysterious Mr 'X' (The one with the money).
With this VITAL information they did...NOTHING!!!!!! Simply joined in the gun-play.
Now I ask you dear reader, if you were given the name of someone in a town you
did not know very well, how would you find him?
I would have asked the locals & tracked him down. Not our heroes,
but who cares? Every-one had a good time, dice were thrown (& cursed), ammo
frequently ran out, but the food, drink & good humour did not.

Some more shots of the lovely set up. Buildings are (nearly all?) Jamie's
& an awful lot of the town's population Diget's.

The Ladies Temperance society on the march.
While it is much hotter in the carpenter's yard!
A possible red herring, Juan Putsemin, the towns
other funeral director (Bargain prices).
& two aerial shots.

Had a great time chatting with the guys and didn’t actually take many pics myself.  Great hospitality as usual, thanks Bob and JC for providing the sausages!  Thanks too Pete for running the game.  Wonderful weather added to a great day out.

Jamie’s buildings are great, made even better by the superb signage he does.  Best of all, turns out he lives five minutes from me and is willing to look at VC signage !  Result!

Lovely as the buildings are, we began to realise the roofer must have lost his nails!

I forget how many times a piece of roof fell on a poor unsuspecting gunhand....adding insult (and injury), to injury! Lol

We insist Jamie makes one of his next buildings, a roofer!

Insert joke roofer names here....

I did get a picture.  JC tried to get his gang to flank my peaceful Mexicans but the temperance ladies got in the way.  He therefore decided to chat one of them up but she hit him with placard!

The Noon stage prepares to leave, well it is quarter past one. Yup! It is early today.
Must complete the exposure of the Hearse, but the Director keeps stopping to talk to strangers.
Cows & sheep both heading for the crossroads.
More shooting & surprisingly (given what happened last time) Jamie's Top hatted boss
goes up onto the roof!

The cattle keep moooo-ving,  wagons in motion, Temperance Ladies too,
& the sheep? Well they just follow like...sheep.
A shoot-out by some back stairs goes by  hardly noticed.
All this time the valiant photographer keeps trying to get a picture.
Hard to concentrate with a burly Mexican looking over your shoulder.

"There's gunna be a big mess on the cross road"
" Sure is. I'd better get my shovel... It is good fer the roses"

Townsfolk gather on the walkways to see the coming calamity.

Proof that you can loose more than your shirt in Mal Passo.
As if things weren't bad enough in the centre of the town,
JC decides to shoot across a street full of cattle at one of
Digit's Mexicans on the other side. What's his Beef?
Fails to hit the Mexican & is adjudged to have killed a steer!
Cattle stampede, cowboys shoot at JC (miss twice) he shoots
back & downs two drovers. Sheep flee in one direction & the
temperance ladies the other. Both just want to get off Main street.

That was where we called a halt to the game.
Every-one had fun, food & drinks. A very good day.
Congrats to all. It is worth studying Jamie's buildings & signage &
Digit's dioramas. Everything was a feast for the eyes.

Thanks for the rules.

Plus one to that 'Thanks for the rules'
Recently got my hands on the Big Battles & Starship rules.
I'm thinking of dragging out my old 15mm Sci-Fi for the Big Battles
& seeing what space ships I still have in the Lead Mountain.
I know Flatpack wants to try the Spaceship rules for WW2 Air fights.
He has some lovely painted crates, including (most recently) Vichy bombers.

Thanks very much for the nice remarks.
The buildings were made by Jamie.
These were the first mdf building he has made. Oh heck I hear you cry.
He takes a lot of care to get them right, even downloading software to construct his own sighs.

No Bob. 'Sighs' are what the rest of us give out when we see his 'Signs'.
Will every-body try & convince Jamie to sell copies to the MDF companies.

Yep - great looking set up guys, and those buildings are stunning. The figures were well done as well, but given the sheer mayhem, don't stand out in the pictures so much. Great show all round.

New member Jamie is very good with technology.
He’s produced the latest copy of the town’s newspaper, reflecting the issues the town faces.
