Title: A small Mexican town
Post by: NickNascati on July 29, 2020, 12:15:35 AM
A two day scratch building project, yes, two days start to finish.  It won’t win any prizes, but it suits me just fine.  For 28mm minis.

Not bad, could be used from Spanish colonial era to today.

Good looking. Would be nice to have a Spaghetti western shoot-out on it.

"Shoot for the heart, Ramone.."
The central well reminded me straight away of Fistful of Dollars

I really like how that looks. Are you thinking Maximillian, Major Dundee, Mexican Revolution, Magnificent Seven or just general gaming in the locale? I've had in my mind a SW USA/Northern Mexico campaign with US cavalry & civilians, French Foreign Legion, Mexican army & civilians and Apaches. Your buildings are making me think of going back to it. :)

Basically, just some border themed western games.  I may another building or two at some point.  I do also have a traditional western town, so this will give me some variation.

For two days worth of effort you got great value. It's looking very good.

Nice.  Did you use 'cork cloth' for the ground cover?  I have some I thought would work great but haven't done anything with it yet. Probably use it for a jungle build, though.  Or maybe Old West?

That is a tidy bit of work for two days. How are the walls made?

Simple foam core construction.  Painted with a fairly thick acrylic paint that nicely mimics adobe I think.

A little further study and I find one of the elements that make it work for me is the color choice for the flat roofs.  I did something similar with my Tartar Wall for Boxers.  Is it the lighting that makes church roof so red?  Does seem a bit bright but still works.  Is that a pig and some chickens roaming the square?  Animals: 'self'-mobile clutter.

The roofs are painted with raw sienna.  I may go back and do them more an earth color.

Lascaris- I've been thinking the same thing.  Add in the Rebs with Sibley!  You'd have quite a fracas with all those factions.

Nick-
I'm thinking of making some Spanish colonial buildings for Blood and Plunder.   And arches are a must.  Do you have any tips on how to cut them smoothly?

Tips? Not really, I just scrounged until I found a disc that was the right size.  Sometimes it is a paint bottle bottom, sometimes a food container, etc.  the real trick is to trace the shape carefully, and cut with a very sharp knife.

I went and redid the building roofs in the same color as the walls, looks much better.  The church roof is corrugated paper, painted deep red then dry brushed.  Red always seems to look right for Spanish style roofs.
