They look ready to swagger into the Zone and lay a world of hurt on anything that gets in their way.

These are looking good UVS.
The comfy chair looks perfect lol

Thanks guys.
For the Rookies I am going to use the Russian heads with face scarves and more Universal Soldier bodies.
Currently I have a number of Crooked Dice dogs awaiting basing, plus I have been watering the plants....
-
They look cool, effective looking camo, nice pjs.

These guys looks great and I love the scenery.

Thanks guys.
The guy in the middle kills me. Wearing and extra set of goggles on top of his helmet in case he breaks the ones he is wearing.
That is why he is the boss, he is super-prepared ^__^.
Of course, strictly speaking he has his goggles on his helmet because he is wearing a full face gas mask.
-
Great work as usual mate. The Metro stories are really quite grim.

Great stuff :)

So here are a couple of Rookies for Zona Alfa. They have not picked up any gas masks yet, they will learn (if they survive).

Both are from the Empress Universal Soldier pack B, fitted with Modern Russian heads with scarves.

So, vermin swarms are an ever present danger in The Zone.

Wonderful swarms. Think I know what my next purchase might be :)
I wonder how you would run a rat swarm in a Zona Alfa game? You could have them be like ordinary hostiles with a number of hits and attacks etc but how much damage can you do to a swarm of rats with a pistol?
One idea I had was that they are just placed at random like a normal hostile then they are pointed in a relatively random direction, probably with most chance of going towards either whoever triggered them or the nearest live bodies/crew members and then the swarm moves at a random speed (say D6" per action in that one direction and anything in its path takes 1 (or more) automatic hits. Just this tidal wave of rats.
About the only thing that could harm it would be fire - flamethrower or molotov. Maybe a flashbang grenade might cause it to change direction.
That's just off the top of my head,
-
One of the better designs of rat swarms out there I think. Nice brush work too!
And yeah, game mechanics for swarms in many games do not adequately represent them in my opinion.
-
Thanks.
Vermin swarms are one of the standard critters in Zona Alfa (pages 41 and 44).
They are not treated any different to any other critter (including threat level based actions).
Those of you of a certain age may remember early 40K had rules for swarms, they suffered double damage from template weapons (and flak armour had a better saving throw against template weapons). No idea on the current version of 40K.
-
I know about the ZA vermin swarms but killing 500 rats with a couple of bursts of assualt rifle fire seems a bit unlikely. Maybe the noise and death scatters/disperses the swarm and that is represented by their wounds. I can buy that. I also have some giant rat models somewhere that are going to come in handy.
I might try both the vanilla swarm and the single-direction tidal wave swarm, maybe depending on threat level and/or a random roll. You just have to move to avoid the tidal wave if you can. It is a different type of hostile and I am all for those. The zone should never be too predictable!

The Artefacts found in the Zone are much sought after by various interests. Though Scientists may be in the employ of Corporations, they have to deal with the local teams. Though this provides a degree of deniability, there are questions about their reliability (notable occurrences of shrinkage).
What force field generator, we never found a force field generator.
Please do not point that pistol at me."
BANG!
"Ouch!
No, you must have missed...
What are you doing with that RPG?
What do you mean field testing...
Some Corporations have started training forces and sending them into the zone. Though most lack the experience of locally recruited teams, they are loyal to their Corporate Masters and any Artefacts found should be returned for analysis.
To ensure their dependence, they are recruited and trained far away, and supplied with plentiful, but not available locally equipment.

Studio Miniatures brought out box sets of plastic modern Zombies quite a while ago.
I bought a couple of bargain bundles (sixty figures) and they have turned up occasionally here.
I found a sprue while looking for some Frostgrave sprues and decided I really should have some assembled and based for Zona Alfa.

I was watching an episode of TWD a while back (zomb-tober-sort-of-part-one (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2015/10/zomb-tober-sort-of-part-one.html))and realised the zombies were all one colour with only the occasional hint of colour (I think it was about six years into the timeline).

Zona Alfa is a really useful system and is usable beyond The Zone.
The Points of Interest rules (soon to be included in the Kontraband expansion) add a suitable degree of randomness suitable for solo (as well as co-operative) play.
The Points Of Interest need some kind of "point" to be interested in. For Zona Alfa I have 40mm bases with a plastic drum and a techno-case - all with glowing contents.
However for my more "Now" apocalypse, I wanted something a bit more subtle.

Warlord German Turret numbers in white indicate they are more than just scatter terrain (POI events are drawn randomly from a deck - so in this case the numbers are not significant).

Boris was in full flow about his last venture into The Zone...
So we were investigating activity around Staryy Zavodskoy Rayon. There had been reports of mysterious trucks moving around and lights in the abandoned factories.
It was nearly dusk as we hid from a convoy of heavy 4x4 trucks, and as it got dark we saw lights in one of the factories.
Not torches, but big industrial lights that lit the surroundings. There was lots of noise within the buildings.
We could not get close as there were loads of guards around the factory.
We pulled back, but in the morning it was quiet. We ventured into the factory and it was empty.
No idea who they were, or what they were doing
As discoveries are made in The Zone, corporations, criminal enterprises and states are sending in forces to retrieve artefacts, test equipment and manufacture items under exotic conditions.
They have to be protected, and cheap, expendable minions are considered an economic way to provide that protection.
Generally armed with sub machine guns, they discourage humans and non-humans from paying too much attention. Where the threat is considered higher, they may be issued with heavier weapons.

This project is coming along nicely. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot more.
Watch out for having too many rookies in your team. They can be a liability if you are using Zona Alfa rules. Although lots of rookies give you a large number of 'boots on the ground', their single action per activation means their leader will constantly be having to keep an eye on them and 'donate' some of his actions to them using the Leader skill. Also, this limits you on having figures with useful skills like Medic and Scrounger, which only more experienced team members can have. A group with a good balance of veterans, hardened and rookies plays best. My preference is a minimum of rookies, or even none!
-
Really like the vibe you’ve created with the figures and terrain

A very long time since the last post.
Though the Exclusion Zone, by definition is supposed to exclude the wider world, there are always journalists who wish get past the Corden and report what is happening to the world.
To do so, they need local help (and the brighter ones know they need some muscle). This is where a local fixer will connect them with a crew, that if they do not trust, at least are reasonably confident will return the journalist reasonably intact so they get the completion fee.

The figure uses the Empress Journalist and the Crooked Dice Dapper Spy head from the Flamboyant Agent head set.
Next I need to complete the cameraman and define some rules.

Good to see you back in the Zone. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you add

Nice job on the journo

So it has been quiet in The Zone, but with the release of Crooked Dice's Rogue Traders, I decided they needed a base of operations.
I bought a Warbases' Brick Workshop at Salute which I thought would make a suitable building.

The large door will be replaced with a roller shutter (removable) so it will take a transit van.

This is one of four Leapers from Anvil Industries. These are from their Print on Demand range.
All of the supports have been removed (there were some minor supports under the heads), and they require only minor cleaning.

Is that a not-Snork perhaps?
No idea (probably not the Tove Jansson character).

Evocative paint job on that Leaper mode. Nice work!
