Agreed, they're a really great concept! I may have to pinch the idea! lol

You're going to need them if you start getting into NMTBH ;) :)
-
Looks good Giles. We’ll have to have a game of this some time :)
I’m in the process of making up arrow supply markers myself, but using a few spares from my gabillion of teeny tiny dice from my mahoosive Wizkids ‘Pirates of the <XYZ>’ collectable card game collection lol
-
Awesome!
:-* :-*
-
Excellent write-up and I love those cards. Funnily enough there’s some very similar arrow counters on my workbench at the moment ;)
-
Thanks Chaps....
Looks good Giles. We’ll have to have a game of this some time :)
I have sent you an invite Richard via PM

Lovely looking game, I agree about the nuances that fall out of the rules, there is plenty here to entertain for the evening. Two exploding guns - what are the chances of that!, a great moment though. I like the arrow supply base and I will adopt that idea.
-
Yes, it looks grand. I'm intending to use those dial things too.
-
second game fought in the Shed - a very different sort of game. Lots of pics and report on the blog.

Looks like it was brutal for the Yorkists.
Looking forward to playing next week Giles 8)

Lovely looking game and great write up in the blog. I'm quite jealous as our gaming group is on hold at the moment!

Really liking these accounts - thanks.
-
Love reading your well documented battles. You really make this period tempting...
-
Like we Germans say: Einfach genial (simply great). A well done gaming table and action in the picture. So you definitely use the lockdown. When you make a game with Richard I hope for a AAR.

Richard played last night - sadly I took very pictures but a write up will follow soon
-
It was good fun, thanks Giles.
My light cavalry had an initial spectacular success, but then discovered that in these rules, flank attacks are not quite the ace they are in some other sets lol
For a set of rules that are only a few pages long and look simple in many respects, they have a number of minor complexities and nuances that I’m still not quite sure I’ve completely got my head around. But they certainly convery a great flavour of the period, and make for a pretty fast and brutal game, even with (what did we end up with in the end, Giles? About 250 points worth of troops per side, including leaders?)
-
Hi Richard - we played with about 250 points aside. Your cavalry flank attack was 'dulled' somewhat by some impressive dice rolling from your opponent. Given the odds you should have won that melee. He had a total of 4 attacks +2 hits from his leader, and you had 11 attacks (rerolling 1's).
Hope to post some pictures/report later.
-
Ah yes, my bad dice rolling. Nothing new there then! I forgot about that lol

Great report, thanks Giles. And a good game :)

Excellent stuff and a very enjoyable read 8)
I have to admit to being very green with envy; you have played more games in a couple of weeks then I have all year :D
-
Wonderful reports, photos, minis and terrain! :-*
I call that... "wargaming." ;D

All set up for our first refight of the War of the Roses - The First battle of St Albans.

I'm a bit lost for words.....

Superb table, look forward to your battle report.

Lovely looking games.

Very envious and looking forward to the match report :)

Great stuff!
I really like that commanders must chose to either get stuck in and help troops in combat or command their entire battle.
-
Fab stuff :-*
Great to see the congestion in the town centre- looks a great 'simulation' and very much like the descriptions of the fighting from everything I've read over the years regarding the battle. 8)
-
Epic. Well done Giles.
Not bad for a large skirmish set to cope with that little lot 😂
-
Thanks Chaps
I really like that commanders must chose to either get stuck in and help troops in combat or command their entire battle.
Command is crucial in this game and plenty of Yorkist units go left behind as the leaders charged forward hell bent on glory.

With hindsight the town should have been closer to the middle of the table - it was quite cramped on one side of the table.
Epic. Well done Giles.
Not bad for a large skirmish set to cope with that little lot 😂
The rules are very straightforward and allow a reasonable amount of scenario tweaking. Any fewer than four players would have been a struggle. We had multiple melees being rolled simultaneously during the bonus card rounds.
-
What an amazing table and set up. I'm just drooling with envy!!! The game looks as though it went well - a great write up on your blog and pictures are stunning. I need to get back to gaming again!
-
Thank you Arcane Steve
I need to get back to gaming again!
Whilst we can still play we will - fortunately both kids have headed back to university (how long who knows) so I can still bring over 4 friends
(abiding by the rule of six) - Mrs Shed wont be moving out yet.... ;)
-
Excellent match report and it does sound quite like he real thing. I was putting forces together for Blore Heath so will be awaiting the next one with keen interest.
-
Impressive set up and epic game Giles, thanks for posting :)

Cannot claim this - its off a friends camera phone with some special features but it is rather good....
-
Another entertaining and wonderfully picture heavy battle report. Maybe you should start a NMTBH twitch stream... lol
Seriously though, the battle reports and your research are fantastic.
-
Very impressive and enjoyable. One point about the battle site which isn't shown on your historical map is just how hilly it is. The Castle Inn stood at just about the top of a very significant slope running all the way down to the river Ver - when you drive up (up Holywell Hill, which is actually pronounced locally Hollywell Hill) you wonder whether your handbrake will hold the car if you need to stop. There's also a slope running down to the east from the site of the Castle Inn - much shorter but steep - steep enough for a fat old man like myself to get out of breath when climbing up while carrying shopping.
It is an interesting little part of Hertfordshire. In addition to the Cathedral there's also the site of John Churchill's home (Holywell House) and the workplace of Samuel Ryder (remembered through the Ryder Cup).
-
Thank you Paul - it was a compromise not to include the hill but having visited St Albans a few times I am aware of the slopes... :)
-
Hi folks, just posted up the set up for our second Wars of the Roses battle, the battle of blore heath on the blog.

This contains a short background, thoughts on deployment, orders of battle and some specific rules for scenario. Covid permitting we will be fighting this very soon.
An empty battlefield - not for long fingers crossed

This is going to be a very interesting battle! Very nice game table, by the way.

Those wagons look suspiciously like they have come from Rorke’s Drift, Giles lol
Going to be another interesting encounter, I’m sure.
You still haven’t lost a game of this yet have you? ;)

Great stuff Giles - I enjoyed reading your report. That’s quite some battle! And you won again lol
Blogger wouldn’t let me leave a comment on your blog for some reason ::)
-
Fab looking game and great to see an undulating landscape. :-*
Those archers must have got a lot of work in shooting at the marks :)
-
Great looking mass battle! :o :-*
Excellent AAR. :)
-
Superb, thanks for all the work that you are putting into these posts, I think single handedly you are motivating many of us to get out armies painted, based and onto the table.
-
Great AAR, thanks for sharing!
-
Brutal and very interesting!!!

Thank you all folks - now busy preparing for the battle of Northampton - Monday night :)

I don't think I've ever been so jealous of not being present at a series of games!! :'(
(Jealous is perhaps the wrong word but I think you know what I mean)
Keep them rolling and I'll keep on reading :)
-
The traitor cards certainly keep things interesting! Another great battle.

You still haven’t lost a game of this yet have you? ;)
I found the Brexit-Special-Rule, but where is the Gile-always-wins-Rule. And, do we all only need a Giles-Mask??

Wowow, amazing!
-
This thread is absolutely incredible - inspiring stuff!
-
Giles, you won again! lol
Great report.
-
First class scenario construction and presentation, the game feeling much different than what has gone before, so a good management to get the history. The weather rules added an excellent twist and jacking this system up to work with so many figures has been really good to see.
-
Thank you Chaps for your very kind comments - you have to wait a week for the next one
-
Seriously impressive, Giles, both visually and the amount of effort you have put into the background and game effects to reflect the historical side whilst still allowing a sense of randomness and uncertainly.
Top drawer!
8) 8)

Cheers Paul - I do hope that this is of interest and that fatigue isn't setting in yet.
-
Great game, really interesting and intense fight! I like a lot the rules about weather, and the excommunication attempt.
-
Cheers Paul - I do hope that this is of interest and that fatigue isn't setting in yet.
Fatigue - so soon? lol
What have you got to go... Wakefield, second St.Albans, Towton (:o), Barnet, Tewkesbury (yay! I’m in for that one), Bosworth... Stoke Field?
Are you going to include some of the smaller battles like Hexham and Edgcote Moor?
Long way to go... ;)
-
I meant fatigue for the readers...you are definitely in for Tewkesbury - which will probably be next year
Depending upon temperature in shed the plan is to fight the following
Wakefield - 19th Oct
Mortimers Cross 26th Oct
St Albans 2 - 2nd Nov
Towton - Nov/December (this will be a real big one - might use pub)
-
Are you going to include some of the smaller battles like Hexham and Edgcote Moor?
Yes - working my way through the Poleaxed books and they are listed :D
-
Ah, Mortimer’s Cross. Yes, forgot that one lol
-
Giles, you won again! lol
Great report.
Now we should really think about renaming Giles to Henry the VII, right?
-
Now we should really think about renaming Giles to Henry the VII, right?
No....
-
I do hope that this is of interest and that fatigue isn't setting in yet.
It is absolutely fascinating, beautifully executed and reported and I’ll be quite disappointed when Stoke Field draws to a close.
You are also confirming what I first thought reading the rules, that they will handle larger battles very well.
-
I too am looking forward to the next battle.
-
Which will now be on thursday :D
- just discovered there was a small Skirmish at Worksop - think of it as the aperetife for Wakefield
-
I am looking forward to Mortimer's Cross. That's my local battle. I must have traversed that battlefield a thousand times going to school as a kid, and to the pub as a slightly older kid (the Monument in Kingsland was a paradise for under-age drinkers in the 80s).
No excuse for not doing Ludford Bridge, though, my other local battle (I crossed that bridge this morning). Lovingly recreate the town of Ludlow, the ancient bridge and the Yorkist field defences, and then roll a die for their commanders to abandon their men and run away. Easy! :)
-
The impact the weather and the single treachery role had was amazing. These rules certainly seem to capture the fluid nature of the historical conflicts.
These wonderful reports are the closest I get to miniature gaming these days. Your efforts are appreciated!
-

Thank you -
The good news - you will be pleased to know there is another report in the offing - the rather lesser known battle of Worksop (we fought it last night - much smaller but it was a very close affair)
The bad news: With London now entering a new quarantine phase for Covid I am trying to establish if playing in the shed counts as 'outside' mixing. I have asked a couple of police officer friends for their input. If the result is we cannot play then there might be sometime before the next instalment. Will keep you all posted.
Stay safe
-
lol Giles, your shed is bigger than many people’s houses, so good luck with classifying that as ‘outdoors’, but worth a try.
It’s a shame about the interruption to the series, but it’ll give you chance to plan out all the remaining battles in meticulous detail ;)

Eric,
Would you consider continuing your Billhooks games online using Tabletop Simulator?
The Wars of the Roses 3D models are available so the game would be eminently playable in the miniatures style.
I’m running the battle of Mortimer’s Crossing tonight...so it’s quite doable.
...I know it ain’t 28mm Perry and all that...but hey, Covid times means improvisation to keep the show on the road!...and you can easily have multiple players just like being in the ‘the shed’.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'd rather keep to the traditional versions.

Latest in the series of our games - the Battle of Worksop - a skirmish fought just before Wakefield. This was fought last week just before the new covid restrictions

Hi Chaps - a bit more painting on the WOTR forces and a new battlemat for the Towton refight when this interminable plague ends...

Meh.... a mere skirmish force ;) :D
Superb stuff- blindingly so :-*
-
Your bow to bill ratio is all wrong, Giles, you do know it should be at least 3:1 right? So you only have another 600 archers to make and paint ;)
lol
Magnificent - seriously. The sheer number of figures is an impressive sight.
(And I can’t even see the mould lines from this distance lol)
Looking forward to the day we can actually play once again :)
-
Great looking table...Winter is Coming
Can only be impressed with the forces you can muster, but it looks like you need to work on some troops for the other side ;)

A lovely collection.

An impressive mustering of your forces. :-*

Great write up and super to see The Shed back in action.
-
A nice report Giles. As you say, a bit of a foregone conclusion, but interesting to see how it played out.
-
Nice clean report, and an interesting development with the escape rather than death of one protagonist.
Will you be doing a what if kind of variant with that alteration, or continue with each battle based on the historical outcomes, as standalone refites, rather than a changing narrative/campaign?

Thanks Chaps for your kind comments
Will you be doing a what if kind of variant with that alteration, or continue with each battle based on the historical outcomes, as standalone refites, rather than a changing narrative/campaign?
To Keep things simple we are just playing out each battle - this is not a campaign
-
A truly inspiring table and report. I hope to get an actual physical game next month.

+1! :-* Fab layout and even if it was a bit of forgone conclusion it's always interesting to play out historical scenarios 8)

Great AAR on the blog Giles. Lovely to see these battles being fought chronologically.
-
Thanks Gary - we have already fought Towton (last weekend) but I am holding fire on the post until we get the others in chronological order out the way.
Perhaps I can get you down to fight one of the others coming up. I know Captain Blood wants to fight Tewkesbury

Tewkesbury should be fun. Interesting too how you interpret the Arrival's "divers lanes" which has always stood out to me as being largely misunderstood.

I do! That’s a biggie!
Great report Giles. Surprised it turned out the way it did. Luck of the dice, or inspired generalship on the part of the victorious party?
;)

Count me in whenever you have the space. Given that I am a Lancastrian supporter, I'd be happy to turn the tide at Tewkesbury. I doubt that you need any more figures but as you know I have a sizable collection if you need it.

Wow Giles, that is a lot of figures and should be an epic wargame. :o :o :o :o
Can't wait to read the AAR.
-
These AARs are superb - and the armies and terrain lay-outs very impressive. Apologies if this has already been covered earlier on in the thread, but the title suggests you are using the NMTB rule set for these enormous games. I have the set and haven't tried them yet but had understood it is designed for much smaller, more skirmish level games. Are you using modifications for NMTB to game this scale of battle, or another rule set entirely?
Cheers

Hi Hincmar - thanks for your comments. All the games fought in this series are using NMTBH. In most of the big games we have kept things simple by keeping all Leaders level 2 and used standard troop types (ie no veterans/levy). NMTBH was originally designed for smaller games but they seem to work for big games as well. There is a big group on Facebook (1500 members) if you have any questions.
cheers
-
Ah, ok - thanks for the explanation. I will take a closer look then - my gaming group's go-to set is TTS but whilst I love that system, I've find that it doesn't quite capture the feel of the era.
-
The Battle of Towton AAR is now up on the blog - full report of our game with a large number of pictures. This was fought using Billhooks

Magnificent! It's why we love medievals isn't it? So much colour in the epic battles!
-
Giles that AAR read as if the battle was actually being fought. What a spectacle with all those troops on the table and what a fight- just the way I'd imagine the actual battle going, swaying from side to side until one finally gave way.
Magnificent and I think your best game ever. :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Gorgeous :-* :-* :-*
-
What a fantastic gaming experience, mass battle, gorgeous armies and quality time spent with gamers and their partners for the BBQ afterwards, you have been a splendid host and the time you have taken to get this all written up and shared is appreciated - thank you. The internet at its best!

Spectacular!
And what an ending. This is really what it’s all about.

All I can do is echo the others, magnificent spectacle, great AAR. Thanks!

'Tis funny that really, how just watching a game can almost be as pleasurable as taking part at time :)

One of your earlier battles made me get the rules - you're a superb advert for them
I hope you keep posting such great reports as that may help me overcome the inertia of the next step and give the rules a try lol

Lovely game and the sort of situation that maximises the effect of a draw stack for random activation as given in NMtBH.
‘I have saved the bird in my bosom’ would make a good scenario title!

-
Wonderful :-* :-* :-*
-
Another great battle, another great report! I am always impressed by the research you do and the effort you put in certainly pays off! Do you base your OoB purely on Poleaxed? I particularly like the special rules you come up with for each scenario, not to mention that your games look fanatstic!
-
Thank you Sir
The OOb's commanders are based on Poleaxed but I then create the troops they command a0 based on what we have and b) what fits with NMTBH.
As far as the special rules for each scenario I do a lot of reading up on each battle via internet and try and work out how this can be incoprporated into the game. Still struggling with Bosworth and it is being fought next week !
-
Impressive battle indeed.

Set up for Bosworth complete - action being fought tonight.

A suitable ending to a great series! I very much enjoyed reading the blog - it must have been great fun actually playing! Incidentally, Andy Callan, Pete Harris, Richard Robinson and myself will be at Partizan in May if anyone would like to have a go at playing 'Billhooks'. As well as a participation game for bill hooks, there will be the first outing for 'Never mind the Boat hooks'...more to follow.
