The new supplement for Lion Rampant has just arrived at North Star. It covers the Crusader States. You can read more here:

Ordered with extreme prejudice!! :D
I've been looking forward to this for a long time.....
Can't wait ;D
-
I don't know if I will ever get to use it but, yes, I will add it to my collection.
-
Likewise, I collect Crusades rules. Four so far.

Why is there a University of Edinburgh logo on the cover of the rulebook?

The University of Edinburgh apparently has a history and games lab, so I guess they’re publishing it. There’s nothing on the Osprey site about it.
-
Osprey gave their blessing for the author Dan Mersey and wargamer Dr Gianluca Raccagni of Edinburgh University to publish the supplement themselves. Luca had it published through the University press which is why their logo is on it.
I think. lol I wasn't involved first hand, this is just what I've picked up. Osprey allowed them to use lots of their artwork in the book.

While the hoarder and Lion Rampant fan in me really wants to get this. I am just not really sure what it is I am buying. The Lion Rampant rules are so flexible that you can use them for just about anything with just a little imagination and some clever renaming.
Is this "just" tailored armylists or are there new rules in there as well?
-
Do you need the Lion Rampant Rules or is this supplement self contained with the original rules reproduced within it?

I think you're on rock solid ground Nick. There have been quite a few FB posts on the subject by the authors delineating just what you have described.

Apparently you do need the Lion Rampant Rules to use this supplement.

Slightly OT, but in the hope that Nick (or indeed Dan) are reading, once all this Covid stuff is behind us it would be great to see a Lion Rampant: The Crusader States campaign day of some description in Notts. Food for though methinks :)
-
Ordered :)
This sounds very interesting - Lion Rampant plus a history professor who is a wargamer - must have a try. :D

We've put together some army deals for 28mm Crusader States forces:

When I can afford it I'll just have it sent to work. When I receive it in our delivery room I just have to spray/fog it, and no quarantine needed :D Roll on payday.

My copy arrived today.
When I first saw it advertised I thought it was pricey for a rules supplement, then figured it just reflected the university press costs and I should take a punt.
I am SO glad I did.
It's more than double the thickness of the Osprey rules, and so crammed with details I can see it becoming a reference primer as much as a game expansion. The production is excellent, keeping the layout of the original for familiarity and including maps, illustrations and background that reflect the input of professional historians as well as game designers. As much as anything, it's a bloody good read.
Top job all round, chaps. :)

Any new rules or units, Jolly Bob?

sounds good

Any new rules or units, Jolly Bob?
I haven't read it in minute detail, but there are a few things like Holy Relics and Holy Characters that stand out. Most of the new units are just new names for existing ones from the core rules, but given a slight tweak to give more "flavour" - Wild Turks is a notable one, basically light cavalry with bows and the Wild Charge rule added into the base cost.
It keeps very much to the concept of amending the basics to produce something unique that LR encourages, and I think if you view the rules as a framework to build on rather than a set of Laws you have to follow then you can make something really special, individual and above all else, FUN.
After a half hour flick through last night, I was already making plans for a force of leper knights from the Order of St Lazarus. :)

Bummer, looks like it's out of stock already. :'(

I bought a copy immediately as I thought it would sell out very quickly. It did.
NS restocked after the first batch sold out in less then 24 hours so they might get some new stock in sooner rather then later. If you see a copy grab it as the University of Edinburgh won't have the same resources as Osprey Publishing.
-
Order of St Lazarus. That was one of those projects I never got around to.
Good news is I've got another batch coming my way soon, and the Uni is planning a reprint. Pop by next week, I should have more then. Still don't hang around though, this is one book you should get in your library even if you don't fancy the Crusades right now but might do later, 'cus in the long run it might not get reprinted too many times.
-
Any word on your restock?
-
Back in stock now- if you want one I would buy now!

Thanks for the heads up, copy ordered.
-
There's only a couple of hundred books coming, and it's the last of the first print run. Honestly, order straight away because I've a whole bunch of retailers wanted to snap these up next week for their customers.
I'm sure the Uni will do a reprint, but invariably there will be delay before that comes in.
-
Just ordered my copy.
-
Got mine as well and of course picked up a few other things.

lol Tends to happen to me too does that lol

There is also a PDF on Wargame Vault..... if you can not get the physical copy.
I always prefer physical copies.
-
19.59$ epub vs 20£ phisical.... it's a little overpriced the epub, isnt'it?

Agreed...not willing to spend that much for a PDF. Really frustrating that they couldn't get the first print run quantity right. Selling out in less than a month suggests a real bungle there.
-
Large print runs are an investment gamble, not something Universities are permitted to do.

I recall sending (Postal Order from school boy pocket money) an order for the new Ancient rules
by something called the Wargames Research Group. I got a very nice note back from Bob O'Brien
which explained that the entire run had sold out, & they were urgently getting the printers to do
a second edition. They had thought that if they ordered 500 copies they would each have loads
of copies in their garages for years to come.
It has been said that if you want to hear God laugh, just tell him YOUR plans for the future.
-
Any idea of when a new print run will be done?
