Title: (Kickstarter) Firelock Games Blood and Plunder Raise the Black
Post by: Grumpy Gnome on October 06, 2020, 07:31:31 PM
In case anyone missed it, the latest Kickstarter from Firelock Games just started. The hard plastic sloops and 28mm multi-part plastic sailors are tempting even if the game itself does not appeal to you. I am thinking of using them for a slightly later period project for example.

Hello Mike,

Congrats on your successes so far. Your company and it’s games seem to do very well and I am sure that is in large part down to the hard work you and your team put in.

I was very pleased to hear about your decision to do hard plastic multi-part plastic minis and ships. The sailors look great.

Do you have any photos of the sprue layout to share?

One of the stretchgoals I hope you reach is for another ship design. The sloops are great but perhaps something a bit bigger but ore modern than your galleon?

Maybe La Concorde, aka Queen Anne’s Revenge?

I need something to go with the ship I have coming from the Reaper Bones 5 Kickstarter you see...

I'll probably be waiting till the retail release to pick up then plastic ships and expansion book, I have far too many Blood and Plunder things I haven't touched yet.

The starter set looks great though, and a good price.

Ok, I see you have the proposed sprue layout for the sailors in one of your updates now. Very cool. For those interested.... update number 3.

All the more reason to back now! Lights the fire to make sure they get painted by the time this arrives ;)

Thank you very much! Always a good feeling when people appreciate the crazy amount of work we put into these things :)
Sprue images are up as you noted. Still a minor WIP, trying to squeeze in another musket! We actually already have a ship designed to work as the Queen Anne's Revenge/La Concorde, our 6th rate Frigate, which is currently available for purchase. There may just be a ship card for Queen Anne's Revenge included in the Box of Plunder as we carry on the campaign...

These will have the same proportions as the metals?

Will the musket and pistol stocks be thickened with the plastic versions? I took part in the first KS, like the figures and like and prefer metal, but the stocks looked too thin and while I understand these are scaled accurately, 3/4 came bent at 45 degrees. I know plastic isn't as fragile, but for pre-modern gaming, I prefer thicker stocks.

It looks very tempting indeed! Could you post a picture with a scale? For those of us owning collections from the period to check the compatibility?

Thanks.

In some cases, minimally yes. Only where necessary.

Here's one I posted from out original Kickstarter. Scale will be the same.

B&P is a good game.  Its nice to see cheaper ships.  I may finally get a couple.  But while I like the move to plastic figures,
$2+ per figure is hardly a savings over metal.   Plus, I'd like to see better, more close up photos of them, both painted and unpainted.  The posted photos seem to show rather stiff positions.

Being a hobby (and back in another era even trained) historian I have been waiting for this Kickstarter for a few months now and went all in.

I rarely (this being the second time) take part in a Kickstarter, because I find that it often features hype-boardgame-products which are just moderately interesting mechanics with adequate illustrations and tons of material.

This however is one of the rare cases in which I can see how Kickstarter helps a passionate company producing a well-thought out product with long-lasting appeal. It seems this will be just another beginning / next step for Blood & Plunder and I am glad I can be a part of it!

I had asked on Facebook, the base heights are all different on these in the photo, what is the toe-to-eye measurement for a standard upright Firelock figure?

I don't have any myself, but I've heard they're around 30mm (ie, scale well with Reaper minis, taller than Ghost Archipelago/ Frostgrave crewmen)

In this thread there's a link that compares some B&P figures to Reaper and North Star:

The Kickstarter is going splendidly. Hopefully we will see much more stuff for the Box of Plunder. I am usually not one of the "gimme moar!"-type of guys but with this game every addition seems to be ticking boxes with me.

Can't wait to have games of Charles Vane facing off against Woodes Rogers. Currently reading up on my 18th century history because of this game. And they have planned to eventually expand the game into the time of the American Revolution. Great times ahead for this game!

Giving this thread a bump (if that is okay) as the Kickstarter is entering the last ten days. So far everything is going great. They even have added a pledge level for people only wanting to get only miniatures.

Hoping we will reach the 18th century cavalry  8)

Firelock Games just published a new update about their Blood & Plunder : Raist the Black Kickstarter which brings the game into the 18th Century.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/firelockgames/blood-and-plunder-raise-the-black/posts/3003321

Apart from a (hopefully) to be achieved sweet, sweet 18th Century Officer model they also unlocked the Native American Units Box which will be another great option when setting sail this time next year. Hopefully we will be able to gather and catch up on all the games missed this effin´year!

The Blood & Plunder Kickstarter is in the final sprint!

Good stuff has been added to the Box of Plunder and there seems to be more on the way.

Now let's see whether we can unlock that sweet 18th century cavalry  :-*

You're welcome. Really looking forward to jumping into the 18th Century with Blood & Plunder next year!  :)

Fingers crossed that we will make it to the final stretch goal but even if the campaign does not reach that goal it has been an immensely successful Kickstarter. Especially for a game with a real historical focus.

Hoping that Raise the Black will bring lots of new players (like me) into the game. I am very excited about how your gem of a game will develop in the future!

So what's going on with this KS? I was expecting something like the first one, but ATM, there's hardly any participation in the comments and the only updates are pics of renders. This was what I was told four months ago:

Quote
These are being made in China. The company we are working with (Bippi) has a very high production level and we are confident that we will have excellent results that match the renders and prints shown. They have done work on some pretty high profile games with excellent quality minis.

We expect to probably have the first shots out of the molds just after Chinese New Year. So likely March. As soon as we have them, we’ll be certain to show them off!

I understand that plans change due to a variety of factors, but the pledge manager closes in June and I still haven't seen the physical product and so haven't decided whether to stick with my original pledge or add another box. :-I

Sounds like they will give the one-month warning that the pledge manager will close in late June or July (i.e., the PM won't close until August).  From Firelock Games, posted yesterday:

We have no solid date on that yet. We will be sure to give you at least one month warning before we do. Right now it’s looking like we will make the announcement in late June - July

If it closes in August, that's pretty tight to meet their deadlines of delivering in October 2021.  I suspect this one will slip a little (particularly given the comment above about having models to show off "in March"...!).  I'm in no rush, but am also waiting on more pictures and details before I finalize my pledge.  I am still very excited for this one!

It is possible we will add to our pledge of they wow us with cool, new photos of product production samples.

And yeah, I do not see this delivering on schedule.

I'd like to be wowed, just like with their 1st KS, but so far it's just renders. :-[

Latest update, some photos of the sailor sprue. Looks pretty good. Reminds me quite a bit of the style of Wargames Atlantic sprues/sculpting.

I am trying to decide how much to add to our pledge before the pledge manager closes. Seeing sprue photos would sure help me decide on the soldiers, cavalry and Natives… as well as perhaps a second box of the named Pirates for kitbash conversions.

It's hard to tell the details, especially the faces, based on the pics. The firearm stocks look somewhat thin, like the metal versions...
