Title: Assembling and Painting Victrix Iberians - 2nd batch Painted
Post by: Mindenbrush on October 23, 2020, 02:16:10 PM
I have 36 Victrix Iberian cavalry to assemble and paint for a friend, the first 12 are assembled and in the painting stage.

The riders are separate from the horses so access to most areas is not too much of a problem  but I think I made a couple of errors along the way  :?

Firstly, I glued the shields on and that really has restricted access behind it where I converted the arm to be closer to the reins.

Secondly, I glued on the sword and dagger scabbards which are finely detailed.

I am stuck with these problems for the first 12 but was thinking that on the next batch I might leave the shields and swords/daggers off to be painted separately.

Has anyone done this as my next concern is whether to clean off the paint on the mating surfaces when I come to finally assemble the shield/sword/dagger to the figure.

Thoughts?

Cheers,

Graham W

Definitely clean the mating surfaces on painted pieces that you wish to glue together....if you don’t then you risk the part breaking away in the future and pulling off paint from the surrounding area which will be very hard to repair  ;)

I actually just primed some Conquest Games Normans with the shield arms separate. I stuck blu tac (white tac actually in my case) on the arm end and in the arm socket of the torso before priming, then it's just a matter of popping off the blu tac. In fact, I blu tac-ed the riders on the horse before priming; that way I can paint the rider separate from the horses but the place where the rider contacts the mount will be free from primer and be easier to glue one to the other.

A couple of good points there.

I brush prime so will put a small piece of tape on the saddle area.

I can mount the sword/dagger scabbards on nails with blutak so that will keep the area to be glued free of paint, same with shields.

Just finishing off the horses for the first batch and a lot of lessons learnt  o_o

That's pretty much what I do with metals and plastics if mounted, except I spray prime- for me I get a much stronger "tooth" :)

I must be a glutton for punishment, but I always glue riders to mounts before any paint goes on at all. It has always worked out fine for me, so I never considered doing it any other way. Maybe I should try the other way and see if I like it better.

I do that too- you really can't tell once the game starts if you haven't painted the riders crotch. :D

am in preparation of painting 24 of these buggers
what a shame their are only 3 horse poses possible, on 1 box you get away with it, but 2/3 boxes you start to notice
have the horse on final base and rider with all his attributes glued on a toothpick

Very true, even when putting the first 2 sprues together I started looking at converting or finding other horses but remembered that these were a commission not my own so any mistakes would be out of my pocket.
I have used odd arms from other plastic figures that are suitable - the Perry Ansar sprue has some alternative arms that are suitable.
I will also ask the guy I am painting for if he has any spare pieces as he has put together some Victrix slingers.

There is a lot of detail to be painted on the horses..................

Wow.  V nice.  I've got a set of these but not made a start ( other than using for kitbashing).   I might have to put a few together.   Not sure they'll looks as good as your though.

fantastic - and no sense of a lack of variation in the horses. Really dynamic grouping.

They look great.  The horses and horse decoration are especially eye-catching.

Thanks for the kind comments 👍

I was originally going to paint the harness decorations on the horse’s head metallic but some research showed that they were fond of colourful wool decorations.

I was given some spare Victrix Iberian infantry sprees at the weekend so have started grafting some of the infantry upper torsos onto rider lower torsos to give more variation.

2nd batch painted, I used the Liver Chestnut triad described in Loki's Greathall on some, Liquitex Burnt Umber/Black on others.

Keeping the sheathed swords and daggers separate made painting the figures much easier.
