Title: Rebasing help
Post by: racm32 on October 26, 2020, 08:26:27 PM
Hello lads,

So about half my FIW collection is on 25mm round bases (like pictured) and the other half is on 25mm square bases. Why? I don't know, I probably just used the bases I had on had when I painted the particular models. I am considering rebasing them to all be on square bases since I use them for Muskets & Tomahawks but not sure how to remove them safely. The are all attached to wooden bases with superglue and covered in Vallejo earth texture. Suggestions and tutorials would be very helpful.

Stand them in front of a hot air heater or use a hair dryer on max heat. This will get the metal figures hot (not hot enough to melt them or the paint though!) and should loosen the superglue so you can just pull them off, depending on how thick the earth texture stuff is.

I rebased a bunch of minis I bought off ebay. I just soaked them in water (only to cover the top of the base) over night and they came off with some gentle prying the next day. I believe they were superglued  as they were metal minis on plastic bases.

I'd suggest trying the freezer first. Set them on a tray and stick them in overnight, normally it'll weaken the superglue

I used the water method Codsticker describes above although I only stood them in water halfway up the MDF base ie about 2mm. After a few hours they peeled off very easily, no damage.

Are they on washers?  If so, there’s an easy way to pop them off.  I put a small screw through a wide, flat bit of wood so the screw head was flush with the wood and about 3/16” of the screw tip was sticking out the other side.  Lay it on a table point side up.  Set the mini over it with the the point centered in the hole of the base.  Press down on the outside edges of the base and the mini pops right off.
