Here's The Guide i did over on the Scarab Site:
Here's my German painting guide
Uniform:Vallejo Olive grey Basecoat, Field grey Highlight followed by Fld Grey/Green Grey Mix.
Collar: Coat d'arms black green then highlighted with Coat d'arms grey green
Grey trouser recipe is Lifecolor Dunklegrau - vallejo basalt grey - Foundry Arctic Grey Shade 33A (I think)
Red stripe: GW Scab Red Highlighted with Red Gore
Assault packs: Citadel Charandon granite basecoat with Vallejo Basalt grey added for highlights.
Mess tin/Gas mask tin: Coat d'arms dark grey base, Coat d'arms tank blue grey final highlight of field blue.
Bread bag gas mask strap Coat d'arms blue grey highlighted with Coat d'arms field blue.
Gas mask: Vallejo Chared Brown/black mix highlight with pure Charred brown.
Wood is the classic citadel of bestial brown, snakebite leather then Bubonic Brown.
Helmet cam:
Citadel Dark angels Green Highlight by adding Vallejo Gunship green
Vallejio Hull red highlighted with dark fleshtone
Snakebite leather highlighted with Valejio green ochre.
Puttees: Vallejo Basalt grey basecoat highlighted by adding white washed with Citadel Badab black wash.

Delete this message or move it to the right place if this isn't the good one, but I habe been told by several WW1 militaria collectors that german army helmets wore no camo. In fact, it seems that the camo we generally associate with stormtroopers was done by.....artillerymen who had the paint to put on their helmets (as it was the same paint used for their guns) and the free time to paint them.
Stormtroopers and ordinary infantrymen used, in fact, mud to camo their helmets. I must admit that I have read several books about WW1 and untils now I have never seen photographs of soldiers wearing the kind of camouflaged helmets we represent so often on their lead counterparts.

Interesting point. It seems awfully popular in wargame armies and among the artists of Osprey colour plates. Yet I don't recall ever seeing it in a single period photo either, even of artillerymen.

You can also find an awful lot of painted WW1 german helmet in militaria stores. I was told the helmets were painted in the 80's to pass as stormtrooper helmets and then sell at higher price.
Same thing for WWII german army. It seems you can only find SS helmets nowadays ::)

now I know why I always found it odd and not-camo at all....
seems I won't need to paint my Zeppelin troopers like this any more - phew

I’ve seen a WWI picture of a Stormtrooper unit (with maybe an 100 men in the picture) and as far as I can tell, no one wear an helmet with the camo design... odd :?

Ludwig Bauers 'History of the German Steel Helmet' has copies of the original order for the camoflage trials and field application. The reason that it is so rare is that the order was given in 1918. As far as I remember it was only officially written in June (need to double check this) so original examples are very rare indeed.

Yes the order arrived late in the war and wasn't followed by lack of time, lack of paint and the fact it was easier and more efficient to put mud from the trench on the helmet to camo it.

Those in the first picture look like Great War Miniatures while the majority of the figures in the second picture look like Renegade figures… but I might be wrong… I doubt it though ;)

Which are from the 5th Rohr, do they have any additional insignia's to identify as officers?
I presume the white collar markings are for NCO's only?

Nick, thats correct white collar & sleeve marking for nco's officers basically had the silver shoulder boards edged with the arm colour with a number of pips on them.

That is a SUPERB guide Keith! The lads at my club are building ww1 terrain at the moment and they really appreciated your guide.
Not to abuse your kindness but is there any chance you could please point out any differences regarding the early war German uniform. I have loads of the Renegade Germans and I would appreciate some pointers. I did the first few of mine in grey shades but I think I probably blundered in my choice of colours.
