Title: Big Bunch o' AB Miniatures
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on November 24, 2020, 11:14:02 PM
Heyhey,

last year I painted a bunch of 18mmAB miniatures; now I'm adding to those.

full size image: https://i.imgur.com/lAcqCMo.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/lAcqCMo.jpg)

Here's 212 dudes, depicting six line battalions, mostly finished (except for the pompoms). Sadly I don't get to base them, but at least I get to put flags on them in the end. :P Right now I'm working on four battalions of light infantry. After those I'll tackle those two battalions in greatcoats (provisional line infantry) and the 1st Dragoons. On those I feel a bit like Napoleon, because right now they're about 50% short on horses. I suspect those cheeky Hussars having stolen the horses. I was told the remaining horses would get sent along with the flags next week. Oh well, I won't run out of stuff to do in the mean time.

After all those French I'll tackle four battalions of Austrians. Not sure if I'll lose my mind of my eyesight first. Send help. :D

Vive la République !

Those look fine!  :-*

My AB French are also Republican. And my Austrians where helmets!  ;)

@gamer Mac: Thanks very much. :)

@Ray Rivers: Cheers, much appreciated. Last night I primed the Austrian battalions. Lots of helmets there. :P

Right, here's a little update:

(https://i.imgur.com/krtxVeJ.jpg)

In the front you can see light infantry Chasseurs (skirmishing). My hope that light infantry would be faster the paint than line infantry (because their breeches are blue) dissolved quickly, because these insaniacs think they're so much cooler than line infantry and liked to show that in their uniform with large amounts of adornments. Oh well. So the light infantry battalions are almost done now as well after I finally learned last night how to tell carabiniers, voltigeurs and chasseurs apart. Light infantry didn't only dressed dashingly, but also how ever the heck they liked it seems.

In the mean time I painted a provisional regiment of 2 battalions in greatcoats (in the picture behind the skirmishers). I think I'll do the dragoons next (24 figures). Last night I also prepared the four Austrian battalions, so those will be next after the dragoons. Once those are done I hope the dragoon horses and flags arrived. And then in the end i'll do the horse-mounted officers. Hope to finish everything by christmas!

Your superb painting shows why..

Napoleonics + 15mm = AB Miniatures!

Looking forward to see them based. Also looking forward to seeing your officers. AB have lots of stunning officer sculpts.

@Ray Rivers: Thanks very much! :) Yeah, they're just superbly nice sculpts. Did some officers (horse-mounted and on foot), and the ones from the provisional regiment are really standing out as excellently cool. I'll take pictures of those later!

@archiduque: Thanks, much appreciated!

Right-o, the light infantry's done, and so are the 1st dragoons (riders only). Oh, and five french officers on horses (riders only for now).

. Tomorrow I'll start tackling the Austrians. That'll be another hurdle, but I hope to get'em done swiftly and prettily. By then I hope to have received all the rest of the horses and the flags, then I'll do all the horses at once, and then put the flags on. That's the plan at least. :) Hope you like them!

Heyhey, I just finished the last 18mm AB Minis! For now, at least. Phew.

Here's a photo of the command figures. French (note the NCOs in greatcoats carrying little company fanions. ALSO note that I forgot painting the pompom on the eagle carrier in the beige greatcoat. That's fixed now.):

Austrians:

One of the reasons why I took these pictures is the officer figures, especially for Ray Rivers. ;) And because I really like them. Especially the ones in the blue greatcoats.

...and some more officers!

Right, here's more!

1st Dragoons:

Maybe an Austrian staff officer and aide de camp snuck in between them here and there, because I paint the horses all on paintysticks and glue on riders as seen fit once the horse is done. This way I can do a nice mix of shades of horse and match poses and so on.

By the way, if you're ever out for a good experience glue some AB Miniatures dragoons to their horses. The fit is just beautiful.

Here's photos of the provisional battalions, mostly because I haven't shown them properly yet (not that they look that magnificent, but I really like their officers :D ):

Right-o, that's that. I'll return them to their owner and hope he'll send me pictures once they're based! Hope you like them. :)

@Ray Rivers: Thank you!

Half of the force is at their home already. Earlier today I got a first WIP picture of the basing work on them. :) The other half is wrapped up and I'll deliver them next week.

I wonder if those Austrian guys though about it at the time, but they ended up with the best looking uniform for wargames ever invented
"Who cares about winning Austerlitz, we'll make great painted lead miniatures!"

and your painting does them clear justice  :)
the french are also awesome  :)

Yeah, I once did a guided tour through Vienna Army Museum during which I learned that they used to have international contests for overall uniform prettiness in the 19th century, and the Habsburg army did very, very well at those.

And it's Bavarians and Austrians in the final, but what's this... Norway have cast their deux ponts for Austria...

Of course the Austrian vote isn't yet in on the ski-troop category :)

Beautifully done. These are delightful little figures. If I was ever going to do Napoleonics (which I’m not) I think these would be the ones  :)

Missed these. You really bring out the best in those 18mm figures.

Is that a commission or for your own collection? I went down the dark path of 28mm napoleonics and couldn’t imagine doing another collection in a different scale on top of that.

@Shahbahraz: :D :D Oh, don't get me started on the point allocation system they use in Eurovision now.

@Captain Blood: Never say never. :D I didn't think I'd ever do Napoleonics either. Or American Civil War for that matter.

@Warboss Nick: Cheers! Much appreciated. That's all commission stuff. I do Napoleonics in 6mm and 28mm, that's got to be enough. I have to say though that 18mm is great. Sensible and pretty. On the other hand I'm just a victim of marketing too. 6mm seemed sensible and doable for larger battles, but it didn't scratch my itch for those pretty uniforms. So I got 28mm stuff as well. :P

I don't want to open another thread, so I decided to keep all my 15mm Nappy things in here. :)

Anyway, here's the 15th (King's) Hussars!

AB Miniatures, hence pretty. At the start I underestimated the workload these dudes would be (mostly because they wear their pelisses closed).

As you may spot, I took a little liberty with the musicians by giving them white fur hats. Clothing the musicians was up to the officers, and as we all know light cavalry especially tend to go overboard if you leave them to design their own stuff.

The officers feature two different shabrack designs (since they had liberties with that as well) and some more horse furniture adornments.

Hope you like the chaps! I'm not allowed to base these chaps and will send them home stuck to these paintysticks, but I'm told I'd get lovely pictures of them once they're based, so eventually these will look really nice. :)

@2010sunburst: Cheers! Me too. :D

@MaleGriffin: Thank you, that's very kind!

@DintheDin: I like to hide threads from you until they got a sizeable number of photos, so once you see them there's more to take in at once. ;) Thanks!

@valleyboy: Well, aren't hussars always. :D

@Fred Mills: Thank you! The outstanding figure quality aside, I think that AB miniatures hit a really good spot between a good look en masse (and a reasonable footprint) and a great look up close.

@vtsaogames: Cheers!

@vexilia: I put links to the full size photos right underneath each picture. I'm not sure if closer-ups make much sense on 18mm figures, but if you want I can see that I get bigger pictures.
