Title: [GF9] Aliens (1986) Plastic Multi-Part Figures
Post by: Manchu on December 20, 2020, 08:11:09 AM
Gale Force 9 recently published a pretty excellent board game based on James Cameron’s iconic action thriller. Surprisingly, the miniatures are high quality muti-part figures. For those of you not interested in trying the board game (which FYI is totally worthwhile in itself), GF9 is selling the figure kits separately for prices not seen in the realm of minis gaming for decades.  For example, 16x multipart xenomorphs for MSRP 25 USD and the Alien Queen for MSRP 15 USD. Sculpts for almost every marine character in the movie (only Ferro and Spunkmeyer missing) as well as Ripley, Newt, Burke, and Bishop (even including an alternate Bishop pose, post-being-torn-in-half) are available as well as some useful plastic scenery (e.g., eggs and facehuggers). Not to mention Ripley driving a power loader!

Scale is approx True 32.

The Marines and civilians appear to be manufactured by Victrix while the xenomorphs are from Archon (formerly Prodos). The xenomorph figures are not the same miniatures as previously produced by Prodos.

What a dream come true for many minis gamers!

By Victrix? Brilliant! And in 32mm... mmm... might be using these for a Core Space crossover. Excellent!

The miniatures boxes look to be great value.

I was in the Bearded card gamer shop on Friday and he had-some of these in.Might have to get a box or two.

If anyone already has them, could he or she post a picture with a comparison to the Prodos Marines? I have a large amount of those and it would be ace if they fitted scalewise.

Oh acid-bloody xenohell. Right while I'm putting the finishing touches to a xenostalgic Aliens project using Kryomek stuff.

lol

EDIT: 15$ for the powerloader set? Is that for real, or am I missing some hidden costs?

I've been meaning to get into some bug-hunt type games for a while and haven't committed to an alien enemy model set yet. These would be perfect.  Perhaps a little large against standard 28mm, but that wouldn't be bad for such enemies

Hopefully they'll be stocked here in NZ, otherwise I may look on ebay or even UK stockist (cheaper from there than the USA in postage)

Thanks. They don’t look too much off. Probably if they were put on the same bases, they might be similar enough to use next to each other.

I was about to get a bunch of astronauts from alternate armies, these'll make perfect enemies, I was hoping that you'd be able to buy the stuff seperately from the main game.

Hi

Has anyone got their filthy paws on any of the figures yet?

I keep looking and drooling at the internet photos but would like some ones opinion on the figures.

It could just be the photo but they appear to be a little flat (at least some of them)

Thanks

Oh my...

That characters box looks like a better sculpted, more extensive set than the one I was drooling over back in '91 or '92, in the plastic carrying case (can't recall the manufacturer right now). But we were still playing Space Crusade at the time, and I wouldn't have known what I would have done with them anyway (yet  ;) ).

I still have a gaggle of clicky aliens and queen lying about, so with the one box, I'd have both factions...  ::)

+++EDIT+++ I just found the old metal ones I mentioned (not knowing me bugged me since I posted this ::) ), and they're from Leading Edge.

What intrigued me a lot at the time was the fact those sets came in small plastic cases lined with foam; actually very convenient for away-team skirmish lists.

I have them (painting for a 'client'). Pretty nice for injection moulded miniatures but, personally, I'm not a great fan of the material (bit soft imho). My 'Apone' has a badly moulded cigar attached to his lip and cheek other than that they all come out pretty good. Best are the Ripley, Gorman, Newt, Bishop minis (the powerloader is nice too). Just a little shorter than the 1st gen Prodos marines but a good match for the 2nd gen multi-pose. I'm just in the process of painting 'Vasquez' and 'Gorman' so will post pics when finished. Can't give an opinion on the 'aliens' as I'm not building/painting those.

I did consider it, Tom, but the plastic is a bit soft and the friction caused by drilling into it might slightly heat and distort the barrel

Great brushwork, as per usual 8)

One thing about your very precise work, is that it always brings out the sculpts really well, and your WIP pictures say more about the actual sculpts than the official, bare plastic (or render?) pictures.

They sure are a leap ahead of the Leading Edge 25mm ones!

I did consider it, Tom, but the plastic is a bit soft and the friction caused by drilling into it might slightly heat and distort the barrel

And that's why you do those by hand ;)

Post by: dwartist on January 14, 2021, 09:35:41 AM
Thanks D! Always by hand with a pin vice. I cut the stubs from the feet so I could use generic bases but drilling into the leg through the foot to insert a pin caused a little distortion so didn't even consider drilling the weapons barrels.

Wow, it's really that soft? That's a bit of a shame, but from the pictures, the sculpt's edges still look pretty sharp.

Is it polystyrene, or one of those newfangled restic-type materials?

It doesn't feel soft when you handle it and I don't want to mislead anybody (nowhere near as bad as restic!) - I just found removing mould lines (just make sure your blade is new and sharp and you shouldn't have a problem) and drilling a little problematic but manageable. They are very good value for money (particularly considering the GF9 have now released the miniatures separately from the game) and well worth a punt!

Thanks. They don’t look too much off. Probably if they were put on the same bases, they might be similar enough to use next to each other.

They're almost the same size as the 1st Edition Prodos minis, just with slightly poorer detail on the weapons and faces.  From a scale perspective though, they will fit very well. The Prodos figures will just be a hair taller and lither.  The only real disappointing figure is Vasquez, where the soft detail definitely sticks out compared to the Prodos "Not Drake" smartgunner. The GF9 smartgun just isn't a very good sculpt, but probably done that way for durability.

The Aliens themselves though, are almost spot on, in terms of scale. I'm guessing they were unsold sculpts designed for the Prodos game. The only knock on them is the lack of variety in arms. They end up looking very "samey" and like they are holding invisible packages.

Being a huge Aliens fan (and playtested the game when I was still working at GF9/Battlefront a couple of years ago) I've been really excited for this game. I got hold of a copy of the core set as well as the Assets & Hazards box that replaces the card tokens with minis.

Got to admit, the models are much better than I expected. The plastic is solid, some detail however is a little soft on the surface, but once primed is clear and should pose no issues with painting.

I'll definately be playing the game as well as a Space Hulk variant using the models, alongside the Alien RPG. I might do a thread for the painting of these, if I get the time.

Nice painting David.

I concur with Dwartist, they're pretty good figs, but the detail is a little on the soft side.

They're slightly smaller than the Prodos marines, but I see no problem in using them together

Thanks, Michael. No, no APC yet but there is a nice diecast model made by Eaglemoss which might make a decent (if somewhat expensive) placeholder particularly with a new paint scheme.

I have finally got my figures assembled.

I am going to use them more for a wargame than as aboard game (not got the games just the figures).

What I would really like to do is get some 'civvies' and do the Hadleys Hope events before the USCM got there....has anyone any ideas for suitable scaled figures (plastic)

The Wargames Factory 'Zombie' range would probably have been good but they are now OOP (and so expensive) I have the Mantic TWD figures but the are a bit out of scale for use with the Marines.

Thanks

GF9 is now taking direct-only preorders for a resin M577 APC kit, priced at 50 USD.

“160mm x 65mm x 60m. Please note that delivery of the APC may take up to 120 days from the time of ordering.”

Nice. It doesn't look too bad, either. Unlike their Queen...

I got a set of warriors, the assets & hazards and a queen, which arrived two days ago. The Queen kit is very obviously not by the same manufacturer as the warriors. The halves of the torso don't fit together properly, she's much less detailed and what there is is much softer, and her headsculpt looks... hilariously bad. I'm not gonna complain too much cause she is really cheap, but she sticks out among the fairly'realistic' warrior sculpts like a sore thumb.
