Title: Build Something Contest
Post by: Overlord on October 09, 2009, 01:04:07 AM
Presenting the inaugural ‘Build Something’ Contest.

The subject for this first contest will be: Transportation

It is a deliberately open category covering just about any type of vehicle from train to submarine to airship.  Additionally any buildings connected to transportation, such as a train station, dockside, hangar, Stargate etc are acceptable. In theory you could even submit a road, river or bridge.  This should allow almost everyone to come up with an entry regardless of their own specific interests.

Members can post WIP photos if they like.   The advantage of WIPs means they can be used for future reference and would allow people to see how the item was constructed.  Each entrant should start a WIP thread for their own submission (WIPS only please, no completed items until after the contest has ended).  Posting such a thread is however NOT compulsory.

The idea is for scratch-building to form the major part of an entry.  If kits, pre-made resin/metal/plastic/etc parts are used they should ideally form only a minor contribution.

I do not wish to make the contest too restrictive for those taking part (or myself running it), so would suggest a modicum of common sense prevails.  Voters will (hopefully) decide whether the amount of scratch-building is sufficient.  The posting of a WIP thread for an entry is likely to aid voters choice.

All construction & painting should take place during the contest, no previously built/started items please.  The idea of the contest is to give you an incentive to build something you have just not got around to doing previously.

For final entries you can submit up to 3 photos:
-A single photo of the finished item (Minimum entry requirement)
-Another that can be a single or composite photo (of multiple smaller photos) of the finished item.
-One photo of the unpainted entry.
The photos may include a few miniatures/vehicle to indicate size/use/practicality of the item only.
The maximum size of each photo is limited to 800x800 pixels.

The closing date for entries is 2359 hrs GMT on 6 December.  They should be submitted to: overlord_awcATyahoo.co.uk

Initial voting commences 7 December and closes 13 December:
I will randomly group entries into several polls.  The winner of each initial poll will go through to a final vote.

'Grand Final' voting commences 14 December with the final result on 20 December.
(NB. If I receive only a small number of entries, just a single round of voting will take place).

Let the building commence. Good luck!

[If you have any questions please post in this thread or PM me]

(Edited twice 09/10/09 for clarification of rules)

Weyyheeyy, I'm up for this one  :D

One question...

I have started on a certain model but really haven't got very far with it at all and posted a photo of it here ...

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=12709.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=12709.0)

Would this be considered as cheating or not allowed (I don't mind if it is, I just want to check  :) )

cheers

James

This is cool. I am definitely in. The fun bit is that even if the topic is extremely broad, I have no idea what to make.

Me too, on all counts! I'm torn between something large and splashy which I really don't have the space to build or store, and something smaller, more practical, but with less 'crowd appeal'...  lol

I would hate to dissuade anyone from entering, particularly if only a minor start has been made, but to be entirely fair to everyone:

I will amend the contest announcement to clarify this.  :)

Is this a scratchbuilding contest, or are kit builds allowed? Just to be clear, as it doesn't actually say anywhere.

not that I'll manage mutipule entries, but will no doubt start many with my low attention spa.... ooh a balloon!

Not a problem. The contest is intended to encourage the building of a long intended project. If you are like me, you will have vast quantities of potentially useful scratch-building items stockpiled for all those projects you will get around to one day.  :D

Yes, one entry per contestant.

Can we enter more than once? I'll enter a piece that is achievable so as to make sure it's done, but I'd like to try and do something a bit more adventurous too and try to get that in.

Edit: And answered while I asked :)

This is indeed the case  ;)

but I had to make some special purchases for the gun turrets
OK
I will open a thread on "building armoured trains" soon, which will also contain the production stages for Orlik.
The schedule is pretty tight though, so I am not sure if it will make it to the dead-line, but it has started me now to finally build it, as the contest intended

yes, me also thinks, it shouldn't be too restrictive. Building of large things could be too difficult and time-consuming without using some kits. Actually, my entry (what i have in mind) will contain some parts-kit-things. Otherwise I would need years to build it from scratch :)

I just started on a kit-build today, that's why I asked. But the finished article won't be different enough from the kit to count, so I guess I'll be staying out of this one. But good luck to everyone else!  :)

Not that I have any idea what I'd build if I did enter, it just seems like an ideal opportunity to practice some of my less developed modeling skills.

Hmmm. We'll see.

Hhm, sounds cool.
... and tempting.
 :)

But, after reading the competition rules again, the most uncertain part for me is still: for the most part scratchbuilding, or would kitbashing (or creative gizmology, as I call it) be allowed as well? As I understood it, a project like my VSF crane constructed mainly from two kits would not be allowed, correct?

This sounds cool, well I was going to build a large piece of sceanery of the next couple of months, so will use that for this. I plan to build a Motte and Bailey with docks, if that is ok, which will include a bridge in 28mm scale.

not correct, I'd say just a kit without additional details and some conversion work wouldn't make much sense in this contest, but something like your crane is allowed. Please make more of these wonderful things :)

@Admiral Benbow
I agree with The Prof.  I dont see how anyone could ignore the scratchbuilding/conversion work required to combine 2 kits and other items into your fantastic VSF crane.  What would not be in keeping with the spirit of the contest would be, for example, just building the crane kit or making very minor modifications.

transportation, huh?

Interesting fact. First I read about this I thought "how cool". Then the mind starts working and I started to swear "what does that mean, "transportation ?".  I think, after a fretful night mind boggling ideas and jumbling them together... I think I will give it a try.

Thank you much

Thanks, former user. I tore the head of the biceps tendon, so they had to repair the tear, then move the head of the tendon to attach it to a different part of the shoulder joint so that it won't happen again. If the surgeons can do that, I can at least build some sort of transportation!

This competition is going to be a lot of fun - I'm really looking forward to seeing what everybody comes up with!

Naw, I'll come up with something original. Just weighing my options.

The worst that can happen is to have Matakishi, Admiral Benbow, and Jimbibbly trying to say nice things about, and wouldn't it be worth watching them struggle? I know that's my goal. Well, one week into the contest and we currently have 27 WIP threads.  :D

It nice to see so many people taking part and with a wide range of entries.  I'm glad to see that a good few people have used it as an excuse to commence a long considered project.  That was one of the aims of the contest.  Hopefully a few more will join us along the way.

Paul, I'm sorely tempted - especially to nick Hammers' idea of a rope bridge. But in truth, having just spent several weekends bogied away in the garage building my F&IW board, I don't think the wife would appreciate me starting another project in the run-up to Christmas, when I've got a huge amount of other stuff on besides... Like directing a play which comes off in December, family stuff, not to mention the small matter of work... And painting the occasional figure of course  :D

So much as I'd love to join the fun, I'm going to sit this one out and save it for next time...

But I'm loving what I've seen so far, and it's brilliant that so many LAFers have embraced the idea.
Go on chaps! I shall be watching and drooling all the way  ;)

In the presentation shots, can we include other models?  The particular case I'm wondering about is that I have a bunch of stands of space-fighters painted on the heads of pins.  I wanted to group them flying around my colony ship as a CSP escort, but I made them a year or more ago.

That should be fine:
Quote from: Contest Rules
The photos may include a few miniatures/vehicle to indicate size/use/practicality of the item only.
Therefore the fighters can be used to illustrate the comparative size of the larger craft.

Curse you Witchhunter! I just stopped fiddling with converting some Co C Model Ts (beer truck, tanker and AA gun platform) and got back to painting after a 6 month hiatus. Now Brent tells me about this?! Son of a...  :o >:( o_o

I guess I'm going to have to start now on the project I had planned to put off until early next year. Arrrggh! A pox on those people who cater to my easy failing to be distracted by other cool things!  ;D ;) :D
Title: Re: Build Something Contest
Post by: Overlord on November 15, 2009, 10:02:49 AM
I read the contest rules again and came to this:
"WIPS only please, no completed items until after the contest has ended"
Hhm, what exactly does that mean? Last photo just before ending construction? Or before painting? Or including painting, but before decals?  8)

Apologies for the delayed reply.  I was away for the past week.

Ideally, no photos of the completely finished item in the WIP thread.  Purely so that there is (hopefully) some wow factor when the first round of voting commences.

However, I do realise that a comprehensive WIP thread benefits from showing every stage, not least so that we can all attempt to have a go too! A major part of the contest is to see how members go about construction of a project.  I'm happy that this be considered a guideline rather than a hard & fast rule.

Thanks for the clarification.

My project consists of a fair number of individual pieces and I'd starting showing WIP painted shots.  I'd overlooked that this might be a rule breach so am pleased (I think) to now be in the clear. For the final entry I'll do images of all of the items, painted and combined together.

I may have missed a clarification here, but since it is a 'Build Something' contest I felt I should ask:

Does the final entry need to be painted? It would obviously be more appealing that way bit on the other hand it will be harder to see how it is constructed.

Don't start that again, there's about three pages of this thread arguing over that point.  o_o

The end decision was that the final piece should be finished completely and therefore painted as well. So one of your two final pics should be of the totally finished piece. The other picture, which can also be a composite, should be of the wip to show the build. (I think that's right anyway).

I'm out too
have been sick for 3 weeks and now have to catch up with other things
but it will be done, that's for sure

just a humble question:
maybe we could have some kind of 2nd class competetion for the possibly many "quitters" of the lots who have started building?
I mean with a 2nd deadline, and the submitters in the first one can join in and show us again how fast they are and what loosers/quitters we are? To keep up the spirit?

just a thought....

Just one week left to go.  :o

If you can send in your entry before the deadline please do so.
If everything turns up at the last moment it will make setting up the voting for first thing Monday morning a major task.

If I do not respond to your entry straight away, dont worry. I will likely be away for a few days mid-week.

I will confirm receipt of all entries.

Good luck.  :)

Well all the entries are in: 22 in total.  :)

I have split them into 4 groups for the first round of voting, each group having 5 or 6 contestants.

Any errors or ommisions in the polls are entirely of my doing.  I am unlikely to be able to make changes without resetting the poll votes so will not do so.  I apologise for anyone this might affect.

You may vote for TWO choices in each group.  The top two in each group at the end of the poll will go through to the final.
(No, I dont wear my trousers like Simon Cowell  :D)

I will close the first round polls at 1159 hours GMT on 13th December *.  Voting for the final will start as soon as I compile the poll and will last for 7 days.  The ultimate winner will be announced on Monday 21st December.

(Off to bed now as it is very late.  *Remind me to set all future deadlines at midday, not midnight.  ::))

I knew I should'nt have entered ,  :-[ . Now with no use for my APC and being off sick I've had time to come up with an idea. This will give me plenty of work at some stage but I have already drawn up plans for an underground installation . I have also worked out teams using my neglected Catachan metal collection plus I can use the newer plastic versions for victims .
I just need to con someone from my club to help me modify 40k rules for it . lol

I guess I could also use it for Doctor Who or maybe Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Dan, I have a theory as to why your APC is not romping away with it (apart from the ferocious competition arrayed against you, obviously)

In all seriousness, the first couple of times I lloked at that group, my eye kind of passed over your entry because it's SO good, that it looks like a resin Old Crow style model.
My brain went 'that's a resin job not a scratchbuild' - even though I know, of course, having seen the WIP, that it is indeed a very well executed scratchbuild.

Seriously - I bet a lot of people have subconsciously felt the same.
Your problem, my friend? You made it too good!  ;)  :D

Dan's APC is in a really tough group.

Got one of my two votes though.  I thought it was darn right awesome!

Hi Ray and Captain Blood , thanks for the kind words . I'm happy to get the number of votes that I have gained . I myself know of the things wrong with the build which I think others won't see .
I would not have built the APC without this contest and it gives me a reason to use some neglected models who I bought to do an Aliens type game years ago . So its really a win/win situation for me . lol

The only problem is I'm desperately trying to finish my Future Wars project so I can start my Vietnam one which a mate keeps nagging me about . ;) I'd like to do a Demo with it so I need to start it soon .
I spent most of Friday laying out some templates and arranging pipes and walkways etc but stopped myself buying the tiles I'm going to make the floor plan with . :'(

This is the essence of the contest.  Whilst there will be a "winner" of the contest, hopefully everyone that takes part is a winner as they will have built (or nearly built) something they might not have done otherwise.  Everyone else gains by being inspired by other peoples projects and seeing how people use different techniques and materials.
A win all round.  :D

The first round is now over and 8 entries progress to the final.

Voting will end at 1159 hours on 20th December.
Good luck in trying to pick just two to vote for.  ???

A big thank you to all those that took part in the first round.   :D

BTW my comments were meant tongue-in-cheek in-case anyone was wondering .
I may give up trying to master the intricies of Irony in future  :-[
What are we going to build next? lol
