Where do all these horsemen come from who are looking sideways, as if for their portrait? It's kind of weird how common they seem to be. I would think that if I were on a horse, I'd be looking straight ahead. :)
-
Maybe they're getting out-flanked!? :D ;) jk

I'm sorry to say that is looks like the witches got a little too much dull coat. Which is really too bad. They're an interesting collection for miniatures.

Please, Rob can you explain to me what a dull coat means?

'Dull coat' is, specifically, the name of Testor's spray-on matte lacquer. It is however generally used as a colloquial for any varnish or lacquer , brush-on or spray, used to protect and take the sheen off a painted miniature.
Due to its composition most dull coats has the nasty side effect of leaving whitish streaks or residue on a miniature if applied too thick or in too many layers.
It kinda looks like that's what's going on with your minis.
That aside, I like them. Who makes them, especially the Baba Yaga?

Ok thank you for you help ... anyway the problem is me and my bad painting! And I do not have any chance against my opponents :)
They are better than me and I am giving them my vote!
you can find the Baba Yaga miniature in the Steve jackson Games set Hellboy Villains Miniatures
it is out of print at http://www.sjgames.com/miniatures/hellboy/villains/
but you can find Hellboy Villains Miniatures in google or ebay

Aww, you're being hard on yourself. :) Captain Blood is a tough match for anyone. Plus he is in a position to rig the competition. But I am sure he wouldn't. Positive. He has standards, he's got to. Cheating is wrong, I am sure he knows it.
...
You wouldn't rig the competition, would you Richard? :P :)

Aww, you're being hard on yourself. :)
Now, I am not a good painter and I know ... I have too many unpainted miniature at home and I am using this competion to paint some miniature I have ... I think is a nice idea to think about a scenary and to paint miniature for it ... I am not a good painter but I hope somebody can support my ideas!

pierrebi
a good try ... at least you participate ...
(unlike me that I have not painted any single figure for the time ... eeh years ... i.e. a decade or so)
Who is Carolina ????

Of course I would, but I'm not running this one ;)
pierrebi - it's great that you take part. It's good that you are self-critical too, because then you can improve. I always say it, but I truly believe that the more you paint, the better you get at it. Besides, as you say, taking part motivates you to press on and finish more figures, so it's a good thing, win or lose.

the always falling down italian ice skater ;) (http://www.repubblica.it/2006/a/speciale/altri/2006olimpiadi/kostnerundicesima/lapr_7643346_54470.jpg)

On sunday she arrived 6th in the World Cup in Turin and she did not fall down :) so I decide to dedicate to her my picture! The Angry little girl was as angry as carolina was after Olympics :D
-
Thanks, I had no idea about her!

He's not able to rig anything this season, but me... ;)

Sorry to return to this discussion so late. I see that Hammers has given you the correct answer. I have used the Testers brand and we I first began painting I had the same unfortunate accident. I like your scene you've put a lot of in it. I'm sure I'm speaking for everyone when I say keep it up we want to see more of your work.

I love the colours on the soldiers, but are they realistic? They look too vibrant and synthetic to me. And would they have been wearing purple?
That said, if you were not trying to paint historically realistic, but rather wanted an unique, bueatifully painted and visually stunning army, then fair play, you did a good job! :o
-
Tough luck Pierrebi, don't be too hard on yourself there are very few that can match the Captain's work.
Richard: These are absolutely stunning (as always). I have no idea how you manage to get the colours to work that way. I wish I had your confidence, believe me I've tried but I just don't have the nerve to go for that level of contrast.
One question, what did you use for the buff coats. You are the only painter I know who gets them spot on, just the right side of yellow.

Thanks - that's about the size of it ;)

Cheers Pat. I try to vary the colours a bit on the buff coats, but principally I use either GW 'Snakebite leather' or Inscribe acrylic 'Caramel', with a dash of Vallejo 'Deep Yellow' for the coats with more of a yellowy tinge (I don't know if they're right, but a lot of modern re-enactors coats are stained a real yellow). I use a bit of black to darken the mix for the base coat, and a bit of white to lighten it for the highlights. That's it! ;)

Sorry for the late reply, but just got our power back after nearly three days.
Thanks for the info Richard. Oddly enough I had a bottle of the Caramel I bought ages ago to try on bases. Works a treat for the buff leather. I hadn't tried craft paint on figures before, but very pleasantly surprised. Now all I have to do is pluck up the courage to go for the high contrast on the rest of the figure.
