Title: UNIT soldiers... any suggestions?
Post by: psyberwyche on June 16, 2010, 02:01:18 PM
Hi guys,

So I've started a new project - a Doctor Who mini game. I have the Doctor (Steve Buddle's Nerdlord), an assistant (from Crooked Dice), Tardis (Hasslefree), 5 regular Daleks & Davros (Black Tree) and the 5 'new model' Daleks (freebie off this month's DW Adventures magazine).

BUT... I ca't find any good quality UNIT troopers. I'm after something like the guys in the last series of the TV show - modern British paras with stubby SMGs, wearing berets. I know it's highly specific, but does anyone know where I can find some suitable models, or proxies? Copplestone Castings have come closest so far (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang range), but some of the details aren't quite right.

Thanks in advance.

for 80's era stuff, in berets, Gripping Beast's Falklands War range... for moderns, I have seen people suggest TAG, but suspect there won't be any berets...

That is correct!

See Matakishi's UNIT: (I like very much):

There are beret wearing Brits available from TAG:

And Gripping Beast sell their beret heads seperately too (guards, paras and marines).

For high-tech, über modern UNIT, I'd go with the new Empress US infantry bodies (heads are seperate anyway) and add beret heads from the Beast. Then paint 'em in black uniforms.

I'd forgotten about Empress's new stuff... very nice... didn't know the heads were seperate...

I will say this - sadly, the Gripping Beast heads are not brilliant... if you are g/s competent, try hasslefree heads instead and g/s your own beret...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I also didn't realise that the Empress minis heads were separate... might try greenstuffing a beret onto an old model's head before ordering!

remarkably easy work... blob on the head, press down, pull to one side, smooth out, even out the other side and add the hem...

Will the GB heads fit in with TAG ok? I need to give some of my TAG heavy weapon UNIT troops  berets, obviously cheaper to buy the seperate heads than buy figures to chop up.

thinking about it I'm not sure Gripping Beast sell the heads seperately... you can only order them with bodies, you just get the choice of which regiment beret, helmet, beanie, etc...

EDIT: stand corrected...
