Title: Vulture Creek - Mariachi Band!
Post by: Digits on July 04, 2010, 03:13:09 PM
Hello from a newbie - discovered this site quite by accident.   I usually can be found over on Ammobunker where a lot of my work is 40k biased, though I do have a few historical projects on the go, including this one.

You can see a few more details about it here

I will be having a good look through this forum for inspiration - happy to be here!

Beautiful buildings-but why no colour?

Because they look better in sepia (my painting isn't the worlds best tbh) and more atmospheric!!!!!

Whilst I think about it.  Does anyone have any pics of the Imex stagecoach or know how well it sizes up for 28mm figures?  I hear it's a little too big for 1/72nd though it would need the horses changing out.  Have I heard right?

Also, my friends and I are looking for suitable 28mm federales - anyone help there too?

Ta.

Checked out the works in progress thread - excellent stuff! Those resin doors and windows are perfect - where did you get them? It's the one part of making buildings (Old West in particular) that I really don't like, so this would be a great solution.

Excellent stuff!

Hmmmm - minor problem - I used to get them from TM Terrain

http://www.tmterrain.co.uk/contact.php

but I'm not sure they do them anymore. (I've just e-mailed to ask them)  However, there are others about including from Barrule

Thanks, Digits. There are a few other things I was thinking of getting from Antenociti's Workshop, so I'll pick up some windows and doors while I'm at it.

Looking forward to more from Vulture Creek!

In the process of finishing off a few of the townfolk / npc's we need.  Here's the quack wagon (Blue moon).

VC is a game we made using the Rules with no name, when they were free to download.  We found the game a bit tame, with little to hold our interest, until we decided to "modify" the rules.  We have a totally wacky interactive townsfolk, with everything from a singing Calamity Jane, drunken Indians, trigger happy civilians, desperate fallen doves, critters and creatures, undertakers etc, all of which can influence the outcome of the game.

We're currently making a few Bolivian buildings to fight the last stand of Butch and Sundance, and I will shortly be making a few mexican buildings.  I'll be sure to post them up here in time.

Hawkeye - just heard back from TM, yes they still stock the windows and doors.  He's sent me a couple of word files with the list (with images) but I don't know if posting them is allowed nor would I know how!.  PM me your e-mail addy and I'll forward them on.  Alternatively, feel free to e-mail him directly.

WOW! Digits, that bank is absolutely fantastic! Did you use the Hirst Arts blocks? If so, you've really reinvented them. I would never have thought of using them for an Old West building, but your bank shows me that it makes perfect sense. We have a few turn of the century stone buildings (banks, in fact) here in town, and you've captured the feel of them with this. Great painting, excellent base, and fantastic detailing. Superb!

Cheers bud.  Yup, they are Hirst arts blocks but the windows again are TM.  The Door is scratched.  The bricks are fairly versatile tbh.  The biggest problem is using crystacast powder - it's damed hard to carve / file down!

For anyone looking for doors, windows, etc for scratchbuilding, I recently came across Grandt Line's plastic architectural stuff (same stuff Antenociti's Workshop carries) here:

Just messing about with offcuts and I reckon this may make a half decent wind pump.  Only trouble now, is I don't have a clue how to make the sails!!!   Oh well, best get checking the net...

Cheers guys.

Quick hand swap (Foundry about the right size) on one of the great Westwind nuns and hey presto!  Sister Sara.  One of my favourite westerns.

Useful to note, any one of the four nuns in the pack could be converted to a gunslinger.  Some are very animated indeed.

That's a great idea, Digits, wonderfully executed. Now all you need is a couple of mules...
I have plans to have an all-girl LotOW posse, and this is a great idea to fill out the ranks. Give one a shotgun, and she could even be useful for anything from Pup to Cthulhu to Post-Apocalypse.
Brilliant!
Title: Re: Vulture Creek - Western Town
Post by: Digits on July 27, 2010, 10:32:21 AM
Only one mule.  The second was a reference to Hogan (Clint) himself.

Yup, definitely 4 nice figures in the set, it would be easy to convert all four I think if you needed them.

Post by: Hawkeye on July 27, 2010, 03:58:56 PM
Just goes to show how long it's been since I saw the movie - although finding a mini to represent Clint is probably easier than finding a second mule! My personal favourite (although it's Clint from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly), is the Artizan one. Great mini. Must paint mine up - along with some gun-totin' nuns!

Have you seen the Ebob miniature?  A little gaunt but very sweet figure.

BTW - Just ordered Rules with no name for reference (we use our own version) from Wargames Foundry as they are doing ALL books half price right now.  Further more, order yourself paints / minis too and it will be post free!!

"Texas has a whorehouse in it!  Lord have mercy on our souls..........."

Most of you will never have heard that line from the musical but tough.

It's been a while hombres, but I'm finally getting round to giving VC some love.   First up is this den of eniquity - "Dolly's" - VC's first official cathouse.  I've a few new figures to paint for it including bar staff and working girls but you get the picture.  I still need to make a sign for it too.

So glad that you resurrected this thread.
I had not seen it before and it is lovely.

Some wonderful buildings, conversions and painting.

Refering to one of your first posts, that 'sepia is better as your painting is not so good' or something like that: Rubbish!
This thread is pure gold!

Now I want one of those horses and to start converting some nuns.

I really should be painting more of my Western stuff.

Very fine painting on the Mexicans.

Cheers fellas.  Marine - me too, that WOULD be something.

Decided to paint some figures.

First up, Pinkertons have been drafted in to protect the cathouse following overtures by two of the areas more notorious gangs to muscle in on the action.

Whilst the brushes were out, I decided to give my original VC gang an overhaul.

And I painted the start of a NEW gang, I love this reaper figure.  Me thinks this gang will be based out of the cathouse!   Pillow companions by night, damned Killers by day!

And I solved my window issue by pulling appart a WIP project that was always going to be too big for the table.  Enough here for a few buildings!

Cheers Elbows - yes, I was trying for something different with the dusters.  May have slightly overdone it.  ;)

As for the windows, TM Terrain used to sell them but Dave informs me no longer  :(

These will keep me going for a bit, though I also just ordered some from Antenoctis which I will have a play with.  Their Ganht doors look very promising.

Agrax earthshade over a dry brush of scorched brown at the base.

After I make the next few buildings, I will set up a few town / in game pics in sepia with a little narrative, cheers.

Post by: Digits on December 06, 2012, 03:38:56 PM
Right, my gahnt doors and windows have arrived too.  I have a stack of foamboard and a few sheets of balsa begging to be used so time to build a few more.

First will be a tall end building with three floors as I don't yet have a building with twin balconies (above and below).  I also want this to have side steps / like fire escapes for gaming interest.

Built next to it will be a simple twin story but I'd like a bow window downstairs for interest.

I'll start knocking up the shell tonight for these  me thinks.

The one I'd love to have a go at though, is the clock building from "The quick and the dead" but I'm struggling to find a decent image of it.  Can anyone please help with a picture or two?
Title: Re: Vulture Creek - now with "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas!"
Post by: Digits on December 07, 2012, 10:55:32 PM
I'll pop up a few WIP pics as I go along.  Here's the first of those buildings.  I've just created the shell and stuck the windows where I want them.

I usually start out by planking in the board walk.  This is simply so I get a good finish at the base of any walls and so I can glue pillars to the top of the boards if necessary.

The awkward part with this build is the balcony platforms.  I use basswood for these as it's a lot stronger than balsa.  They are not particularly level, but then I do most of it by eye - adds to the rustic effect me thinks! ;)

Will be using plastic steps for ease, you get the idea here.

Now for planking in.....

Sweet looking. I always like seeing it build from the ground up like this.
I think one of the problems I have concerning scenery is I'm cheap on it. I always go for the cheapest option (make it all myself).
This makes me think I need to reconsider this.
It never ends up looking this good.

With the exception of windows, so is mine!  Saying that I agree, pre made windows does make it so much easier.  If you can't get hold of resin windows, I would suggest getting so good highly detailed plastic ones, backing them and make yourself a mold.

Believe me, falling off things in Vulture Creek is a common occurence!  We play a bastardised set of "Rules With No Name" which allows much scope for us to add our own flavour.  We start the game for example with a stagecoach Card and a VC Townsfolk card in the deck.   The townsfolk card always yields a random encounter or an NPC including, drunken indians, old timers, doves plying for business, guns at windows, dog bites, thrown out of dodge (including forcible ejection from WHATEVER floor you are currently on!), shotgun weddings, gambling debts, pesky kids and various lawment to name but a few.  The stagecoach on arrival in front of the big hotel, can be carryiying anyone from Black Hearted Jake to siren Calamity Jane!  If she starts singing and you are within earshot, you move the QUICKEST way to her, including flinging yourself off a balcony!

Maybe you'll like this idea - very simple cemetary.  Nothing fancy in VC - things die - a lot - fact.  I used the bits of balsa on the mat so when I pva'd and sanded over it, it should leave raised displaced ground to show body buried there.    Hanging tree is GW, as is the vulture, taken from a husker riders arm.  When painted, I'll add a little sign that he will be looking at.

Homage to Good, the Bad and the Ugly, will call it Sad Hill.

I want a stagecoach...but I'm also terrified of a stage coach.  lol

PS: I have to say I'm surprised no miniatures company has produced quality kits in plastic for the Old West.  While they would not sell in massed quantities...a nice crisp, easy to assemble plastic coach with horses, and a box of semi-modular cowboys (say 12-15 miniatures which can be custom tailored)..would be tits.

If it wasn't something I only need in very limited numbers, I'd be tempted to make one for casting in resin.  What makes this and the Dixon model so bloody frightening is the weight of the carriage.  It makes the spring work doubly difficult.  If someone were to make a resin one, slightly larger to suit the 28/32mm market, they'd make a small fortune.

3 packs of mounted US cavalry 7th?  From artizan.  I will get a command pack and a few foot guys to blend in with them later.

I do however LOVE the perry miniatures horse holders.

So, a little progress on the boarding house but I received some lasercut signs with a nice wells fargo sign.  So, I decided I needed a Wells Fargo office - kind of timely as I now have my own stagecoach me thinks.

Cheers fellas.

Voivod - I try to make them all a little different for gaming pleasure and to give myself interest in doing them.  I've just finished this Wells Fargo office.  I was interested to do the curved top to match the lovely laser cut sign.

Generally speaking, I don't mess with the insides.  There are some great laser cut buildings about for that.  I would have gone that route had they been so readilly available when I first built a few of these.

However, VC as a game is very three dimensional - we use the roofs and balconies a LOT so I have plenty of scope for interesting platforms etc.

I've also been painting more figures.  The apaches don't take kindly to this poor light, I'll try to get a daytime pic up soon.

A lot of flash on them, and it's taken me a good three hours of work but I've cleaned up and based / sanded nine cavalry horses, one pony express horse and a grizzly bear!  I think I will paint all this four legged beastlyness before worrying about riders.  Besides which, I've ordered two packs of dismounted cav figures which can all paint together.

The building only recently got finished so I will arrange pictures soon.....just a few windows left to paint.

On my paint tray and half done having started this week...the boys in blue.   I also picked up a few Dead mans hand figures and the latest pack from Black Scorpion so a few more characters to paint too.  I have 4ground wagons to build as well.     Talking if which...I recently came across three resin variant wagon covers to fit these....but lost the images / links.....I thought dreamholme maybe but can't find them......anyone help please?

Cheers fella!

Well....truth be told, I can fill a large dining table with buildings already....but there are a couple of things floating about my head I want to build.

1)  I have a grand manner teepee that will be based and a few bear skins modelled for an Indian trader.   Indian will be trussed up though and tied to a post .....our humour...just go with the concept!

2)  I want a Hardware store "Four Candles".......I may do this first as it's an easy build.   Inspired by the latest offering from 4Ground, it will be a corner shop.   The main reason for this is a little clutter on the walk way.   I have various barrels, tools and a water wagon that can be arranged "for sale" as features to cower behind.

3)  I want a "Dutch barn" style livery to replace or compliment the livery I have.  Key feature being an open hay storage area on one side and an ability to have figures pass through the ground level....possibly.

4)  the town needs a livestock auction house and more corral  fencing.

5)  been toying with an open stage with side kiosks for a travelling freak show / Wild Bill type travelling show.

So hopefully a few things of interest.

Great minds!
(Love the name, wish that I had thought of it.... lol).

The Hardware Store (Proprietor is one Eric the Shed) in my town will have the same kind of thing going on outside for exactly the same reason.
It consists of barrels, bales, tools, lanterns, mining gear etc......I just have to get around to adding those bits outside, both on the sidewalk and affixed to the front of the building and getting them painted up.

Ok then...the first stage of Four Candles.    Basic shape.   As it will be adorned in clutter....it really ONLY can be a corner shop!  To be fair...VC is a warren of streets every time it sets up (morphs every time) so corners are particularly useful.

It will get a front "porch cover" once the planking out is done.   I need to find suitable posters to plaster it with....

Not the best picture...but whilst finishing off the cavalry....pics soon.....I managed to finally paint the Artizan pony express guy.  Nice animated figure.

More wood on the hardware shop tonight.....nearly finished the build....just the roof and porch cover to do....

And I've had a cracking idea.   I need a more "fluid" looking cattle stampede.   So, I'm going to cut an irregular base on which to mount about a dozen of the Dixon long horn.  But to make the piece multi purpose...I will cut out a base slot that can either house another cow.....or a mounted cowboy.    So it can either represent a stampede..of an orderly drive.  I need to convert a cowboy to be holding a lasso also.  A piece if florist wire should do the trick....

I stupidly mounted my previous dixon cattle on rectangular bases, three to a base.   They look crud tbh.   I'm going to try and salvage those cattle too at some point.

Edit:

There's the cowboy...

Going to need more steers!  :?

I think as a minimum.....twenty five.   Going to get expensive!

Simple thin plasticard in the bottom.  I will mount one cow (or maybe 2) on a horse base to represent stampede.    Once I get hold of some more models, I will try and repose some heads.   The important thing is to make them look like they are jostling each other.   I will need to paint them all individually before basing them.

If I need them....I can salvage ones from the rubbish bases I already made.   Twenty five should do it.    Going to paint this first batch......and get it started.    Going to be heavy model though!  ;)
Title: Re: Vulture Creek - Scratch building a hardware shop.....

Yip, going to be heavy but 25 longhorns do have the mass advantage anyways against the common man :D

That's going to look brilliant... but are the streets of VC wide enough for that stampede?
Title: Re: Vulture Creek - Scratch building a hardware shop.....

The way we set it up each time....yup.   The town is fluid...but only just! ;)

Saying that, we have multiple wagons and stage coaches as well as a plethora of citizens.....streets are damned crowdy....and dangerous .....just the way we like them!

Still waiting for small tools to arrive, but now time to decide the level of clutter....

I like this scattered look....spades to stand in the open barrel...stuff to hang from hooks...

I can't but he'll think I'd love a few clusters.....would be fun to do cattle rustling / open range scenario.   This could get expensive....... lol

Words like: Magnificent, Astonishing and Freaking Awesome do spring to mind, total bollocks about "my painting isn't good enough blah, blah" excellent brush work and a keen eye for details. I enjoyed that read  :).

Thanks guys!  :)

Just finishing a second group of 8 steers.  I will be sure to get a picture of them in game next time we play.

I had been asked about the roof of the hardware shop...here you go.....simply painted medium coarse emery paper.

The tools STILL have not arrived so will add them later...but finished with signs.

Now.....I WILL now finish the 7th cav lads next!

So, to update my to do list.....

COMPLETE

3)  I want a "Dutch barn" style livery to replace or compliment the livery I have.  Key feature being an open hay storage area on one side and an ability to have figures pass through the ground level....possibly.

4)  the town needs a livestock auction house and more corral  fencing and or "back yards"

5)  been toying with an open stage with side kiosks for a travelling freak show / Wild Bill type travelling show.   First up on this will be a town stage and a duck shoot.....

6). Cattle drive / stampede - COMPLETE

7). Adobe church

8) I need benches and rocking chairs etc to put outside doors etc...

9) The Chinese laundry is a boring in game building...too tall with nothing in between.....so I'm going yo cut out the side and remodel into a warehouse with landing / lifting beam and open floor at mid level.

10) Finish 7th Cavalry!

A very productive day sat in the sun!  We need a few back yards for the many buildings of VC so I started on two today plus a corral

The first is simple.  It will butt up to the back of a building hence no back fence.

A corral using bamboo meat skewers

Whilst at it, I decided to make this somber piece

And my favourite.  Again, this will butt up to the back of one of the larger buildings.  This one is a a scene straight out of NCIS and will challenge even the great Gibbs and his team!

Thanks.  To be fair though...4grounds toilets make them what they are.....and a box of coffee stirers (£4 for 1000 on eBay).

Picked up at Tripples this great set from Colonel Bills.    I believe she's inspired by the sculptor's ex wife! Lol

I bought it so I can make use of my similar purchase from Eureka.  Going to make a back yard for one of the seedier establishments of VC.     Combine it with a peeping tom at the fence, and I need to find a girl with bath towel......actually...hassle free do a nice fairy with "towel" I can trim her ears!

I'm thinking of cutting the girl with the water off at the waste and have her pouring a pan out of a top window!

I have decided that I am not going to do the interiors of my buildings, but a backyard with a few baths in it may be a worthwhile later addition.

In fact you have gotten me to considering back yards to my terrace, which includes the bath house, as there is room for it in the box that they are stored in.
Hmmmm....

Lovely stuff - inspiring since I've been sitting on a pile of MDF/fences for a while...waiting to do exactly the same (make a bunch of fenced back yards etc.)  Lovely stuff as always.

Curious, I've heard "khazi" numerous times in British shows/movies --- what's the tie in to a toilet/wc?  Origin?

Eureka has another "bath" themed set as well, I think it came out with the film crew. A dirty old man is in the bath with his hands below the water level as a bathing beauty steps out wrapping a towel around her.  She can be positioned facing any direction. lol

I have a large half barrel set with a bathing beauty (suitably endowed) and a maid which I think was a Napoleonic themed set IIRC.

Colonel Bill's site has some very interesting pieces, next month's buys methinks.

No worries!

So, I'm thinking about a back yard to one of the fruitier establishments....where I can place the back yard babes.....and I'm thinking I need somewhere less utilitarian and more eye catching...ie somewhere pleasant to bathe.   White fencing will be a must...but will have to afford privacy. (I have a great idea for a peeing tom!) but inside I needed more colour.

Maybe not your usual Wild West extras...but I just made these ornamental tub orange trees.   These will add colour as well as interesting hide behinds.

And yes, oranges were grown in California etc I checked! Lol

Ok, so I don't paint flesh too well.  But for the skanks of VC, they are perfectly acceptable!

It's the hot young women of the various cat houses of VC that put the town on the map.

Here, a madam takes a bath with her gals.....watched over by the establishments owner...Mr Sleaze.

Now I just need to build them a back yard.....

Cheers fellas!  ;)

And now for some major surgery!

VC is getting big!  So big certain builds are becoming either surplus to requirement or are simply too big as they are for the table.  Combine that with the fact I am inclined to add more detailing these days than when I started this.   So I've decided to separate the funeral directors from the lumber yard building, the latter getting a major overhaul to become a brewery!  The funeral directors will get a little detailing adding, particularly out back.

I'm also bored with the big nothing that is the Chinese laundry.  In game terms, it's too big taking an age for figures to get up or down it and it generally having limited interest.  Inspired by the clips I keep seeing of Seth McFarlanes ways to die in the West where they drop the ice block from the loading level of the warehouse, I'm going to carve out the side, add just that loading level and add a fast bucket elevator, Buster Keaton style!

I can build a much smaller laundry complete with washing line back yard later on.

Sometimes as a modeller, you just need to bite the bullet and accept that not everything you do is that great and you shouldn't be scared of going back and taking the knife to it.    Hopefully this will give me a few new buildings of interest.

We are all always learning with each new build.

I look back at my earlier stuff and often add something to it or even just move it on, one way or the other.
If we didnt learn, what would be the point in doing it at all...?
 ;)

And there is always the issue of space.
If you want to keep building sometimes you have to make room...

Good luck! I know what you mean, my idea of a 4'x4' table has already moved to a 6'x4' table just to fit in the buildings I have. I still need an undertaker's to fit in and I'd like a corner bar. And a building under construction. And the Sarissa blacksmith. And a laundry.

So I can see the problem! What sort of arrangements are you finding works for gaming purposes? I was planning on a central street with a turn with a back street behind it in either side.

We agreed years ago that VC would never be set up the same twice.  It tends to vary from 4 to 6 street ends, great for the random arrivals which include ( or very soon will ) the cattle drive, two different stage coaches, cavalry troop, sheep flock, women's temperance movement and numerous wagons!

Because certain buildings give distinct height advantages or have multiple entrances, moving them about stops the games becoming stagnant and encourages the use do different buildings.  If I was to make a bespoke set of boards for it, it would be different I suppose but that's the beauty of playing on a blanket!

Digits I agree with you wholeheartedly...I'm already re-doing stuff which was...redone when I redid my original Drake's Branch!   lol

I have just thrown out some veteran pieces of terrain (they did me good service but are not good enough to sell on ebay and I have no buddies nearby to take them).  It's fun learning tricks or how things work.  There is nothing worse than terrain that no one really uses during a game!  Even my lovely 4Ground buildings rarely are entered.  This is mostly due to scenario issues as many games devolve to a gunfight etc.

Don't be afraid...chop that stuff up!

So, the first conversion to make this into a warehouse.  Just needs painting.

Much better.  Whenever I'm building terrain I tend to revert back to the "playability" of the piece.  It does sacrifice looks sometimes, and historical accuracy or common sense.  It reminds me of my theatre days when the rule was (for a normal scene or act) to have no less than three "stations" at which actors could block/use/engage.  If you have one place for actors to congregate it's boring.  Two locations and you get a back-and-forth routine occurring.  Three locations or more and you can get some more natural blocking.

I tend to look at game tables the same way.  I try to have three or more useful locations on a board.  I try to shrink that down to single terrain pieces.  Most buildings just become boxes, but a building with...say...a fence?  Bonus.  An accessible rooftrop?  Double bonus.  Interior?  Triple bonus.  A fenced portion in the back?  You get my point.

So from what I can see you now have a balcony (1), barrels (2), cargo attic (3) etc.  Definitely adds to the piece.  Well done Digs.

Rumcara.....your avatar reminds me that my VC gaming buddies and I chatted about making a "drive thru" fast food joint....."McDaffys" which I'm sure I can chinesify sufficiently to start my China Town.

I also intend to start my Adobe church soon and paint a growing mountain of figures, and I just ordered a set of wagon covers from Adrian's Walls so I need to crack on.....

Ok, so Mason putting up his church has spurned me into action....long overdue me thinks.

So, this is the first leg of my Adobe church.   This rough bothered sketch, makes sense to me, is what I want to build.   I've measured out foam card sections to built the tower.

Set myself the target of fitting this to a dinner serving mat, like a lot of my other builds.  vac is getting a little crowded these days so trying not to go over board.

So, first part, corner tower built.  Once the shell is glued, I will set about the corners to round them, probably using a little milliput / green stuff before plastering.

Actually I need to tame it back a little and loose the front balcony or the church won't be deep enough.    Going to work on the main shell over the next two hours.   Pics then.

Yup, simplified the front.   I'm thinking a pergola on the right hand side, wooden frame and straw / Palm covering.   Not sure yet.  I will have a play when this is dried.   The recess on the front of the tower will have a madonna in it and wooden shelf.  The arch around the door will be Adobe.  I need a bell suitable for the arch over the door about 3/4" high if anyone can recommend one? I will add a couple of side doors.

Need to pick up a pot of polyfilla, which I will eventually mix with ova before plastering it.  Tomorrow is mainly about smoothing and gap filling.  The roofs go on last.

Too bad Xmas is over, before and during you could have easily bought many different sizes of small bells, me thinks. Of course you will a bigger bell for the tower as well?

These are my church front doors. Looking at them now, the decorative surround is a little crude (it was built nearly 10 years ago... ;) lol)

Which is looseley based on the San Fernando church in San Antonio de Bejar:

Thanks for the pics.  I'm not doing the surround, just the doors but they look great!

I like your build but I'm conscious I have to keep the building sizes down these days as the town has LOTS of buildings and storage is becoming a major issue!

Yes, I looked for a real example to base it on.  Couldn't find one I liked so this one is from my head - evolving as it takes me.  Saying that, looking at real examples gave me ideas for the butress, the scalloped shpe of the top wall etc.

I did a little adobe on the back of the cathouse, but this will be the first proper adobe structure in town.  If it works, I may even get tempted to build a few peon houses....

Anyway, just bought a rather nice 14mm brass model ships bell so that side is covered.  Need to stop for filla on the way home tonight....

You really don't let a Project drag along for too long  :D

Plasticard roof tiles are maybe the fastest way? Just two sheets or so cut to the right size and some support underneath and that's it.

Done that.  Whilst waiting to sort the roof, I've started detailing.  I'm particularly fond of this table set I picked up at a games show last year.  In my mind, the grateful and God fearing peons living in the Mexican quarter of VC, leave pots of food offerings at the church.  I'm going to need a fat Mexican priest!

A little annoyed.  I should have checked for crack resistance on the filla.  See the cracks around the door for example?  Anyway, I need to fill those tomorrow night

So, I did have the pan tile mold as it turned out!  I've cut out the roof shapes in stiff card on which I can glue the heavy tile sections once they are cast and cut to shape.  That will be laborious and will take a few days.

And my Madonna charm arrived at last.  If it hadn't, I was tempted to get one of Maradonna!

I filed off the chain ring and will paint it suitably bright colours once primed

Well I just ordered a pack of Mexican villagers and some monks from foundry so I guess....

This is going to be tight.   We only had the dregs of a bag of crystacast left and I won't be able to afford to break the casts when I start on the tricky tower roof.

I haven't started gluing them down yet, they need to thoroughly dry out yet, but I.can tell this was the right way to go.

Will try to get roof built tomorrow....

Cheers but I cocked up a bit!  Remember I said this wasn't square?  Hirst arts pretty unforgiving when things ain't square!  Should have given this to my friend Brian to do, he's the one with the experience of it!

None the less, regardless that one side of the roof has ended up with and extra row of tiles, and that a little work with tetrion filla will be needed to fill the gaps, I have glued in place the main roof.

Now comes the REALLY tricky bit, the tower roof.   This may end up looking....rustic....at best me thinks! Lol

Any bits of the roof that you have concerns with can always be 'hidden' with clutter: Moss, stray grass the odd blanket etc.
I utilise that trick when something niggles me and it only adds to the build in my eyes.

That's true.  I use that with tarpaulins and camo nets on my 40k stuff.  A few tufts of grass will help.

Paint this week.  I need to order some terracotta paint anyway.

Thanks guys.

Well, I just received a pack of Mexican villagers and a pack of monks suitable for a priest or two to work the church ( I want a Father Ramirez to paint when I paint Tuco!).  What I'm very pleased about is the two western minis foundry saw fit to put in the envelope, neither of which I already own and both quite cool!  I'm made up!

Like I've said, my painting isn't fantastic, but this is very in keeping with other VC builds. The light has washed out the plaster, I will try to get a daylight shot when I can...

I've some rushes coming for the pergola but otherwise it's finished.

I think for my next build, I'd like a hacienda similar to that the gang occupy in A Few Dollars More.   I can't find a picture of one so I may have to watch the film again!

A hearse is something that I have not gotten around to doing myself yet.
I have had the driver painted and lonely staring forlornly at the pencil sharpener that is destined to become his ride for ages.
Poor bugger.

As for the High Chaperal, that was my inspiration for a hacienda/ranch.
Simple but looks good.

So, anyone else put together one of the 4ground stage coaches?   I've spent today doing just that.  Bit of a bitch of a kit.   Not too clear instructions combined with failing eyesight and I made a few mistakes resulting in pulling it apart at one point.  :'(

Just sanded the base and primed some luggage for the roof so not quite there yet.....but maybe tomorrow night.....
Title: Re: Vulture Creek - 4ground stagecoach
Post by: hentzau on February 23, 2015, 02:11:53 AM
The worst part of the coach (at least in my experience) was getting that floorboard in place.  I had to sand down the tabs on the floorboard to get them to slot into place.  And it didn't bend smoothly, so I ended up with a crack in it so it doesn't quite sit flush on the cradle.  Also had to trim the roof quite a bit to be able to later remove the roof to place figures inside.

I agree about the floor.   I'm annoyed it's really a piece of card, like many of the thin bits.  I squashes too easily.   My main advice to everyone is, don't be impatient like me.  Use pva for everything instead of superglue.   Because it's too easy to glue pieces the wrong way up, or just touch contact with card pieces means you don't get a snug fit.

I don't know about the 4Ground one, I bought the Sarissa stagecoach. It fit together quite nicely, but like you experience, I wasn't overly fond of the card details (railing, luggage compartment, driver's seat) but it does service me well. I have put together several MDF lasercut kits and I ALWAYS use PVA glue for them, stay away from Superglue!!!!

Yes, good advice.

None the less, I have a finished stagecoach!  I painted the woman passenger.  The male became a driver for one of my wagons.

So, stage coaches play an important role in VC, they bring all manner of random npc's from the singing Calamity Jane to the evil Black Hearted Jake.

I have a number of characters to paint for this one, starting with the Lone Ranger and Tonto.  I have the ranger figure primed and I'm sure I can rustle up an Indian.....

I also just received a pack of sheep from Redoubt.  They are great, now I need to buy a whole flock!

I think I'm coming around to liking the 4Ground stagecoach the best of the bunch so far. You did a really nice job on that one despite the difficulties with the kit. It comes the closest to the Wells Fargo Coach that I took pictures of: http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2014/02/wells-fargo-stage-coach-reference.html (http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2014/02/wells-fargo-stage-coach-reference.html)

And I want to do a sheep flock.  Small one for now.   Similar idea to my cattle stand, removable herder....in this case a Mexican.  In this way, I can for example swap it out with a gun toting hand or even a Seth McFarlane figure!

These are not flashed or stuck down yet, but I do like these Redoubt sheep.

Two bits for you - the reason for the argument between sheepherders and cattle herders was the west where they combined is and was semi-arid, generally (not always), so not that much forage and the sheep, once they'd passed through a given area, ruined that space for cattle because of the different way cattle and sheep graze.

These days, peace has broken out through more careful range management.

The other is that most of the sheepherders in the American west were of Portuguese extraction, or least to the best of my knowledge.  Might help with finding the right name.

Oh, and now you've gotten me wanting to find some 'slaughtered' sheep in 15 mm!  Already have a good sized flock waiting to get finished painting.  Fortunately, I already have dead cattle, so that's covered.  But who the heck makes dead sheep in 15 mm!?
Title: Re: Vulture Creek or "How the West was messed up!"
Post by: Digits on March 04, 2015, 05:58:48 PM

As for dead sheep....very easy.   Cut them from their stand leaving legs on.   Plane one side of the sheep so he lays flat on his side et voila!

So, I am away from my modelling stuff for a few days, visiting old country with the missus.  I brought a small pad of paper with me and my trusty iPad, with a view to sketching myself a plan for my Adobe hacienda.

A few things I want it to incorporate.......

1). A mixture of pan tiled pitched roof and flat plastered roof.

2) the protruding wooden beam ends

3) balcony on the main house

4) a big gate leading into the central court yard. Maybe with sloped "gate towers" at either side with a little pan tile over the gate arch itself.  Nice big wooden gates, ajar for gaming purposes.

5) steps from courtyard up to a bit of a "defensive" wall.  Maybe just around one or two sides of the model.

6) I would like a small stable

7) an open fronted storage "garage / mini barn)

8 ) maybe a tree or well in the courtyard

9) arched palisade under the defensive wall perhaps or on the lower level of the main house.

10) at least one more means of entry on the back side of the property?

I am well aware this wouldn't be a small build and would mean leaving other buildings off the table, but I think it could have major gaming opportunities.  Thinking about 40x70cm base ish...

If you think of other bits to throw in...let me know.

I need to get thinking and planning......

They might help with inspiration, but by the sounds of your list you have most things covered. This model is about 60cm x 30cm. As you can see there isn't much room on the back for the courtyard. So going bigger will be a must I think to fit in what you want.

Now you've done it!  I have to go some to create a thing of beauty such as your fine model!  :?

Consider the cacti borders well and truly copied!

Tell me please where your civilians come from?

Cheers

Judging by your church I think you will create a thing of equal beauty :)

Your planned hacienda is certainly going to a lot bigger than the one I intend to make.
That is a long list of features that you intend to include.
Must be some proper rich folks in your place, like that posh Mama's Place.

Mine is gonna look like a peon's gaff in comparison.

Yours will look great and mine may be too ambitious!

Anyway, you can always build ANOTHER one!

I want something that is in essence similar to that which El Indio's gang live in in A few dollars more.   I may even put a tree outside the wall so it can be climbed!

Anyway....off for dinner.  Later hombres!

Comments / suggestions welcome ( just don't tell me to get hand writing lessons! Lol)

Well I'm home.  first problem is the piece of mdf I have is only 30 x 60 cm so narrower than I thought.   I may run the main house lengthways instead.....so there will need to be major changes! Lol.  I may cut the first foam board tonight.  The mdf is beveled and sanded....

Edit:

complete rethink....the house isn't grandiose enough.....

Sadly no hacienda as yet.  A family berievement put paid to that but I will be on it soon.

In the meantime, to cheer myself up, over to my mates last night and we started a game of VC.  These pics show the town in a peaceful before the storm state........I may take more pics tonight when it all kicks off!

Indeed.  I just wish someone would release civilians cowering behind cover!

Civilians play a big role in our games.   The civilian population can be a dangerous folk to cross and many get to play a part.  Even the more inanimate (see the big Bear by the hotel?) can cause utter mayhem.

The arriving Stage can have an assortment of dangerous or even down right weird passengers ready to join in the mayhem.  And don't let the little girl with her 'Tiddles" talking to the Dic and his pretty wife  fool ya!

Looking forward to reading it all, i was very impressed with your scratch building before but now have a need to do some serious research.

Dang it, Digits.  Now you've gone and done it.  Resurrecting this thread - and my rereading, or more realistically re-viewing it - reminds me that I haven't a single 'dedicated' corner building in my too long, way too long, delayed scratch built old west town.  But there will be afore I'm finished - and I'm assigning you a substantial measure of the blame, you polecat!   :D

However, there is hope as I recently found the Chooch shingles and they'll really help with a lot of the roofs, especially the residential areas and some of the pitched roof warehouses and the like.

And I'm going to need more clutter, a lot more clutter - and I've a lot already - to do my town(s) justice.  See what kind of trouble you're causing?

With you there 100%.
Resin is fine for bigger stuff but figures need to be metal in my opinion as they are too fragile (weapons and other thin extremeties etc) for gaming otherwise..
It just feels right.

I had a couple of their resin figures and the weapons snapped, got shot of the rest.
Luckily I have pretty much all of their existing figures that I want in metal.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Yes that's my beef with resin.  It's ok on figures holding shotguns which tend to be bulkier but I'm with you on pistols.  Perhaps we should all lobby them ?  It would be a shame to decide not to buy on the basis on materials.

I have seen one picture of the fat Mexican fellow sat on a donkey / mule - I will have to get me one of those though!

Talk  of the Dixons cattle above has reminded me I was going to model (I have a few left over) some cameo pieces such as cattle dragging bed sheets to go with the drive....I may work on those soon....

Edit:  that's unfortunate, I have 9 doggies but only 7 sets of horns!

So, I have been having a think about what I want to do next with VC.  We had a good game the other night but it got me thinking I need a few teaks to our rules which I need to run by the guys.  On top of that, there a re a few more bits I need to add to the game.

1) I've ordered a Surrey Carriage from Sarrisa Precision. This will look quite cool as one of our roaming wagons / vehicles.  I've ordered a few seated figures to put in it too.  Hopefully finish it next week.

2)  I have half painted a Teepee I have.  If I can find a suitable head dressed Indian to put in front of it, I will be making an Indian "trading post".

3) I still need to finish the Brewery conversion I started a while back.

4) I want a few small adobe buildings to complement the church and make my "Mexican Quarter"

5) Small cattle stampede cameos (bed sheets etc as described above)

6) I need to make a lynch mob.  Originally we were to have a travelling carnival but we've gone off that.  an interactive and very dangerous lynch mob is just the ticket though.

7)  I have an ox and cart (I'm sure it is South African but hey ho!) and some furniture bits.  I'm going to load up the cart with furniture as an eye candy roaving wagon.

8) Many of the civilians on the table are not mine but a friends.  I kind of need to paint more for my own amusement and use if he's not about. Most of these will be Knucleduster 32mm.

9) I'm very tempted to add the laser cut railway to VC (need a little more convincing yet)

10)  Per the scene in million ways to die in the west - I want to make a block of ice to suspend in front of my warehouse.

11)  I need to paint more mounted figures.

So, still plenty to go at over the next few weeks / months.

A few paintings this afternoon.  One day I will hopefully learn how to paint flesh! Lol

Anyway, I'm for sure certain the barrel guy will be a big hit in VC!

Most importantly, Vulture Creek has a new Sheriff!  Mr Pinky has simply not been up to the task and the townsfolk have demoted him to deputy sheriff.  This new fella, with his peace keeper ( shotgun, not the pistol! ) is going to make life a little harder for the ne'er do well's that blight the town.

Interestingly I finished of my saloon yesterday and i used the same sign as yours :) i may need to change it as is already been used.

The new sheriff is looking good, he looks like a black scorpion sculpt but i don't recognise him. Where is he from?

Last question did you ever finish the hacienda you were planning two years ago? If so where are the pictures. :D

He is a Black Scorpion figure, but not sure why he isn't still up, he's quite cool, even if he is resin!  :?

As for the hacienda, it got 95% built......then destroyed as it was too big for the table!

Thanks for asking though.

The first of two more bits I'm adding to my cattle drive.  A piece of cut cloth hanky and pva/water to form a captured sheet.  I normally use tissue paper like this for doing tarps etc, but as I want this to billow behind him and be tough enough to handle, I've cut a piece from a proper handkerchief.

I have 6 more cattle so open to suggestions!

I like where you're going with that. What about some cattle in the process of smashing through a stack of boxes?  You could impale some little bits of wood on the horns,  etc.
Title: Re: Vulture Creek or "How the West was messed up!"
Post by: FifteensAway on March 27, 2017, 04:25:42 AM
No problem with your flesh, lots of African Americans in the west, a lot more than Hollywood shows!   lol

Okay, my simple way of doing flesh is a base color of flesh or ruddy flesh or its equivalent from the craft store.  And then pick a red brown and thin it down with water into a wash and wash it over the flesh tone after its properly dry.  Works just fine for my purposes.

Now, pack to the African Americans - Tom Mix, famous Hollywood cowboy was taught his roping tricks by a real cowboy, a real African American cowboy.

I like the idea, I have some barrels that would work...especially as one is broken to start with.  I will work on that later.  Nice man at Dixons is sending me my missing steer horns too!

And thanks for the painting advice.  Goes to show how bad my flesh tones are.....he isn't meant to be an African American! Lol
Title: Re: Vulture Creek or "How the West was messed up!"
Post by: FifteensAway on March 27, 2017, 02:27:19 PM
I was, to a degree, kidding about the African American coloring.  The woman and the man in the barrel could also pass for Hispanic based on the skin tone.  If not the lighting, then I suspect you are starting with too dark a base color and then the overwash isn't helping, but the wash works if you are going for Hispanic - or at least Mexican which has a strong current of native American in it.  Of course, I work in 15 mm and, generally, skin tones are less visible on a figure and definitely less so in a game situation.
Title: Re: Vulture Creek or "How the West was messed up!"
Post by: Digits on March 27, 2017, 02:54:43 PM
:)  I'll take Hispanic!  To be fair the guy in the barrel looks oily!  Not sure what happened there but I think he needs a bath!

I need to invest in lighter skin tones as you rightly say.  Cheers bud.

Following Elk's idea of boxes, I've opted for barrels.  I'm fashioning a piece for the top of the broken barrel and waiting on my horns for the last two steers. But you get the idea here I think.  The Cattle are not the easiest things to pose but I have lifted the two at the barrels and turned the head slightly on the left hand doggie.

Apples it is.  Easy enough to fashion from green stuff.  I will do them tonight and hope the horns arrive this week as I'm desperate to paint these two pieces.

Now, if I could manage to make sheep look more animated.......

I got to thinking that my apples are a little large and that they could be something else (cantaloupes for example) but whilst trying to find reference to fruit of the old west (I know, be careful what you ask for!) I came across this great listing old cowboy slang for food stuffs....enjoy!

*
4. Boggy-top: A pie with no top crust

7. Hen-fruit Stir and Long Sweetenin': Pancakes and molasses
*
8. Horse Thief Special / Spotted Pup: Rice or tapioca pudding with raisins

And riding in to save the day is the stunt cowboy who is so good at his job he takes a bite out an apple...while it's still on a steer's horn!

Go for it, Digits.  You can do it.

Okay, so that was a mental flash I had when looking at your splendid work with that vignetter.  Not sure if you can actually make it work.  But maybe, with your susceptibilities to the powers of suggestion, you might have to do it now.

I'm weak willed for sure but I'm not completely  gaga!

The apple eating stunt cowboy may have to wait.

I'm very tempted though to emulate a few of the "million ways to die in the West"

I already mentioned the large ice block for the warehouse.  But a cowboy being gored by a runaway steer, would be doable and I'm sure there are other cameos I can copy...

I've been asked to help build a building and show Kelgtar how it's done.  Hopefully he will start his own thread with his pictures but I will be putting a step by step for him here.  As it happens I do need a new barn so that's what we will be building.  He has already been out and bought the materials list I gave him but I'm not sure I have everything myself yet!  :?

Anyway, this will help us both out.  Right I need to go mark up some foam board and come up with a shape.  I think I know what I want...

Edit:  ok, I think this will do.  An open blacksmith area at the left side front, and some open stables at the right will give lots of cover / detailed interest.

The big doors of the barn will be replicated at the back so through traffic is possible on the ground.  The top doors will be open to the hayloft at the front.

First thing needed will be a floor piece (mdf / hard card etc ) 205mm x 390mm

Cheers guys.

Ok next step for the barn.

Cut out the following for the main block

Bevel all edges that need to meet the ground (all round the open stables, in the two main door ways, and the leading edges of the blacksmiths.

Glue the box together with the low walls inside, these will support the upper floor later.

Then sand the base inside the box.  When it's dry spray inside black and paint the sand .

Cut out the pieces for the annex and build it.

Cut a piece to fit inside your top floor.  I got the call wrong and built the inner support walls 5mm too high.  Never mind easily remedied when we finally glue it in place later.  For now, construct a box deep enough for your needs.  This will stop figures dissapearing into the loft when you stand them in the door way.

Now, with some stiff card, cut out two pieces.  Score the larger in the middle and bend.  Place this to one side for now as there is work still to be done.

Glue the smaller piece to the annex.

That's it for foam card and card.  From now on, it's all balsa wood and detailing.

Edit:  just been watching the "Wild Bunch" whilst working on this.  Reminded its one of the all time great western films.  If you haven't seen it, go get yourself a copy - AWESOME!

Im using up the last of my resin windows here (I will have to get hold of some others and make molds for future projects) but you can easily fashion windows and doors from balsa.  I put these where I want them.  In this case, I think of the annex as his living quarters and the two small windows allow a little light into the hay loft.

Now, seeing as the ground floor will have open doors at both sides, any visual glance into the inside will show blank and boring looking walls unless you plank it out.  Do this area first.  I'm going to add a few more wooden details such as stable walling to one side for added interest.  This area will need priming and painting before you can add in the loft.

And some internal detailing.  This does not have to be extravagant unless you were planning to light it internally!

Incident on Grant Street figures from Black Scorpion.

I really like this piece.  No brittle bits so happy it's resin if if my painting did give her a Scouse Brow!  Mind you, I do like how I've accidentally managed to make his face cast back in shadows ( not that the figure sculptor had anything to do with it!)

Now I need to figure out how to weave it into our game....

Not sure yet whether to paint it or stick it on e-bay....

Dislike is a strong word.  I really like a lot of the poses and detail, for example the hostage piece above is great.  Unfortunately I'm clumsy fingered and brittle resin pistols and rifles are prone to break your heart when you've spent a few hours painting them.  I just wish they'd go back to metal. She is dainty.

EBay it is

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sell/success.jsf?itemid=132153765837&mode=AddItem&draftId=729281747613&categoryPath=220%20%3E%2016486%20%3E%20123860

Clad the outside of the building.

Even though there is more detailing to do outside, best to prime and paint the inside so we can then insert the loft before planking out the loft floor.  I use Halfords car paint black because it's cheap.  Don't forget to blacken the underside of the loft too.

The civilians are Old Glory, I think.
They have very few poses, though, which meant I had to amke a few small modifications to the women to make them look a little different:hats and dress alterations etc.
I think that I have a few spares hanging around somewhere. If I find them you can have them.

The Apaches I was talking about are my own sculpts that I will be launching soon, so I need to get a few painted, I reckon.

These fellas....

Later today they should appear on my thread.

So next stages for the Livery.

Give the interior a quick and dirty paint job...it will be dark in there when finished anyway.  Now you can insert your loft level.  Fit our floor boards and prime for painting.

Now build your doors.  I find it easier to do them separately then add them to the building.

There is a lot of roof area on this model so break it up by using different methods.  I have used dimple planking on the two covers.

Now for the laborious task of tiling the main roof areas.  I use simple card folders / wallets.  Cut your tiles to suit.  Mine are obviously over scaled but it suits my town.  Remember though....it took me nearly five hours today to cover this!  If I'd made them smaller.....whoknws how long it would have taken?

Ok.  Almost totally finished.  I found a blacksmiths forge I like....but it's too big to place under the front cover.  As such I will be building a small side yard for it.

I have ordered a few tools etc to hang up, add the odd poster and I need to fashion a couple of saddles to rest over the stall walls.  I will also be adding a few barrels / boxes into the back of the loft for visual effect.  Apart from that, it's done.

Good eye!

So, what next?  A few bits here I want to do soon.

Here is the blacksmith I bought from Knuckleduster....he's great.  Also a few bits of clutter for the Livery.

I need more civilians.  There are MANY spoiled doves in VC.  What the world needs now are wholesome women's!

The first is a foundry I think.  The next are Mary, school marm and Sally, all from Knucleduster

I need some dead markers.  These horses and the dead lawman are from DMH and the little cute dog is from Colonel Bills I think.

And something I've wanted for years.....so much so I sanctioned my wife's last trip to Oz so she could pick these up for me from Eureka Games....vultures!     Experimenting with florist wire though I suspect it's a little flimsy.

Hopefully I will get time this weekend to do a little painting.

Meanwhile, as if the folk of Vulture Creek didn't have enough drinking establishments, someone has decided to set up a business selling it to the townsfolk to drink at home too!

I mentioned a while back converting what was a wood yard building into a brewery, well micro brewery to be picky.  The hard part has been getting foamcard inside the building in order for me to plank it out.  I can start on that now.  The big barrels will be along the back wall you see into darkness.  The loading platform will have clutter such as barrels and barley sacks to hide behind.

Second the motion for clear plastic. I use my own version (made from canteen teaspoons) for air support in my 1942 games, and it works much better than wire.

Love your stuff, Digits!  :-*

I also think that clear plastic rods would be the way to go. I'm anxious to see the results, as I am facing the same problem in the near future.

I love the vultures as well! But I advise you to stop reading at this point, because here I go again with a (small!) rant about new world vultures (we call 'em turkey vultures) o_o

Be sure to bend the wings of your few vulture minis that have a flat wing spread into a slight dihedral like the others: bald eagles soar with board-flat wings, but not our new world vulture friends.  :D Check photo below.

BTW, Golden eagles, the other western US eagle, soar with wings in a slight dihedral, although not as pronounced as the vulture.

Dang I just can't stop  :o More info than anyone needs...

Feathers tend to be dark dark brown rather than black: undercoat in black, drybrush brown?
Secondary feathers on the undersides of the wings are grey.

Cheers guys.  Yup, playability is key with these scratch builds.  Our roofs do not lift off, we have our own interpretation of how a gunfight goes down indoors.  But we play the game very much in the 3D with every balcony, flat and sloping roof, bell tower and water tower, corner, cover or recess put to use.  Indeed many a gunslinger has met his end in VC by taking an unfortunate fall!

This building already has a flat roof and a corner balcony affording lots of height advantage.  By adding the recessed deck, I now have the inside recess, cover from barrels and the cover afforded by the deck itself.  Not too bad.  Lots of fighting about this piece I suspect.

Edit: Vultures will have to wait, I need a rethink!

The town looks like it's grown organically and is unique, which I think adds a lot to its appeal - to me at least.

Gaming this weekend so time to add a few new figures.  Too many womenfolk in this town think it’s ok to swan about in their undergarments, time for the decent women to take the town back!

Budsda inspired me to paint a few of my fantastic Gunfighters ball minis.

Why "Juan d'Basque", someone asked?  Or didn't.  For those who don't know, the Basque were a mainstay of sheepherding in the western US.  Thus...

Oh, and any reason to boost such a delightful thread back to the top for more eyes to feast upon the beauties here.  Oui?

edit: Note to self, reviewing this entire thread takes a long time!  Worth it though - and realized I'd commented about Basque previously in this thread.  In 2015!

My thanks fellas, sorry I’ve been quiet for a bit.

Normal service resuming.  I have a few figures to pain over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, a big thank you to my mate Brian who made and painted this piece for me.

Vulture Creek Temperance ladies.  They’re a bit fed up of all the violence in VC and believe the evil drink is behind it all.  Not sure that’s the full reason, but these ladies mean to change things.  I just need to come up with some rules to do them justice.

Oh, no!  I just realized Deedles is missing an essential element to add proper realism to his games.  Oh, the calumny upon his talented young head (young? heck if I know).  Where, sir, where, oh, where, are the numerous piles of horse, oxen, longhorn, and sheep manure?  And the manure wagons and sweepers to clean it up?  Come now, let's get on this horrendous omission.  :D

And, to be fair, yes, I do have a few such items planned (already purchased just not painted) for my own Old West town to be (or towns - yes, towns).   And anyone who calls me an "old coot", well, we'll meet in the street, stand back to back, pistols drawn, and y'all walk ten slow paces and turn and we'll fire simultaneous, we will.  I'll count nice and slow, too, really I will, pilgrim.   ::)

Let us take a moment to examine that 'wedding' picture.  We have a nun escorting children, a priest, and a few apparently peaceable locals going about their daily business.  And then we have a 'passle' (that's an authentic western term of measurement that means 'a whole bunch') of cattle moseying (another westernism) down the town street.  Not only do none of the townsfolk seem much impressed but the bovines seem quite content to stay in their grouping without any discernible control by a cowpunch (yet another old west bit of lexiconography).  And then, and the impetus to my previous post, all those cattle are parading down the road without leaving a single road apple behind them (my font runneth over of cattle related argo).  That is just not the way it was!   :D

Or, if you prefer, you can focus on the other element of the photo - and others within the thread - that might be properly termed wargameography.   ;D

And some people would be gathering those "road apples" to dry out and use as fuel for their fires/stoves etc.

"Hmmmm.....what do you call the fellow riding the horse with a lasso then???"

Invisible in the photograph being pilloried, um, I mean parodied.  ;)

Hey, wait a minute, I looked again and, sure enough, there is a a man mixed up in the herd that is "camouflaged" so well that he is all but invisible.  At least on my screen.  His paint job coloring blended so well with the cattle I completely missed he was there!

Hold on, are you trying to distract us from the lack of "road apples"?   lol

Curious 'fact' that roams around the back of my brain: During a horse stampede, if you stand stock still, it is likely the horses will go around you; during a cattle stampede, it is likely you will get trampled - rather severely if not to death.  Not sure of the veracity but I 'remember' that from many a year ago, like 40 or 50 of them (years).  Probably from some western I watched in my youth.

Moving away from Manchester means I don’t get to play this anymore, at least not until my old gaming pals come visit.

But there is a possibility of new gaming opportunities here in South Warwickshire so I am tempted to do a few bits that got put on the back burner a while back.

Don’t expect overnight results but as well as gathering a few more civilians, the two things I wish I had done were the hacienda and briefly considered “McDaffy’s”, VC’s first (and I suspect, history’s first!) drive through!

The hacienda got shelved at a bad personal time but on reflection, the plans I had were too grandiose and the piece would have displaced too many buildings from VC, so I need to think smaller.

Now, it just so happens one of my favourite western progs growing up was “High Chaparral”  and I remembered the Cannon’s ranch house was a pretty compact and simple affair.  A quick search on the web and I’ve gathered a few pics.  I will park these here as inspiration for the next build.

May I suggest that the cattle maybe  relatively sedate, and that someone may have whistled them up,or a cattle farmer ( on foot) could have walked them in? We did just that at our old property in the high plains of NSW, Taralga.

Home under the weather today and flipping channels in between sleeping through a couple of movies and lo and behold there was an episode of High Chaparral and a glimpse of three or Linda herself.  Tastes change as we age.  Still not a bad looking lady but not so up to my tastes now.  Of course, she is a bit older now but then so am I!

Mojo has escaped me this last few weeks.  However, I thought I’d help kickstart it again by returning to VC.  Time to get though my growing figure pile and paint a few sorely required civilians along with a few dead markers.

I have two versions of "Sarah" in my 'pile', Sister Veronica and Veronica Voluptuous. One is, of course, in her habit and the other...well, she has other habits.  lol

No need....as it’s one of my favourites, it’s one of my earlier mini conversions.

The linguine guys are mostly from what I can see, from El Indio’s gang...”Few Dollars More”.

Of note, and one of my favourite bad guys, is Juan Wild, the hunchback from the scene when Douglas Mortimer lights a match on him in the saloon in El Paso.

Also with him and one of the figures,  Niño.   Cool beans!

In case you didn’t know, you can buy the Gunfighters Ball (Knuckleduster) minis from Caliver Books in the U.K.

Well....a bit disappointed tbh.

The riders are great, but few actually fit the saddles without judicious cutting.

The horses aren’t great, I’m shocked as I’ve always liked everything else they do.  Legs on the horses are not in great positions, and many horses barely look like they will take any handling.  Indeed one in my pack is broken from the stand!

Clint come with a mule...but I want a horse for him.  I may look what other horses are out there for him....

I have been distracted for my smaller projects, this one included, but the group of gamers I have fallen in with have an ongoing loose campaign with plans to do more Western gaming.

One talented individual has updated the campaign map to include Vulture Creek!  So, with luck, post shutdown there will be more gunfire in the streets.....

Nice position, down on the Rio Grande.  I’m looking forward to prospecting in Jingler Hills.....hmmm......that’s given me a modelling idea.....

For me, not quite enough wagons on the table.....streets looked deserted........

So, thought I’d make up these two kits.

Wagon cover from Adrians Walls, horses on left from Knuckleduster, and right from Colonel Bill’s.

I'm sure Old Glory did them and I might have some lying around we can do a deal on. I'll dig around the metal box and see if i can see them and post a picture - might take a couple of days  :)

were done by Garry & look small next to my Banditos/Revolutionaries.

‘Twas an old post.....10 years old....

Ok, so playing cowboys again, I’m of a mind to do a few new builds, but I thought I’d lost my cowboy bits box.....which I just found! Huzzah!

But, despite it being full of bison, Indians, more cowboys, civilians, six more Dixon cows (must add to stampede), priests, children, a penny farthing and clutter......I seem to be almost out of windows!  Bought loads of these from AT terrain years ago....don’t do them anymore, so I think I may need to make a cast of these last few.  So now to find my casting materials.......don’t ever move house guys!

So, been having a rummage and prepping a few bits.

As it happens, I have three wagons to paint....started all three last night.  The third is a a large flatbed (think Boer war) loaded with supplies for wat will be my mine head when I build it.  Talking of which, I have zeroed in on a design and bought a flywheel for it.  More on that later...

I have decided I want a new “professional looking gang” so I will be painting up my Knuckleduster Clint and Angel eyes, along with a few choice minis that are going to look the business.

And then, we need more civilians.

I noticed that apart from the little girl with the cat, I have no kids.  Rectifying it right now.  I have a pair of kids from a Reaper and a pack of Victorian kids from vampire wars....a couple of which are useful.

I have a few more shop keepers to paint, and best of all, a mariachi band.

So, plenty to go at....

And the reason for all this........”GOLD!

Yup, until now, Vulture Creek has been a relatively quiet town.  Trace amounts of gold dust have in fact been panned from the Creek itself.  One or two die hard prospectors though believed the source may have been the nearby Jingler Hills though many dismissed this as pure fantasy......until that is, “Lanky” Peterson, dug a nugget straight out of the rock the size of his left nut!

The word gets out quickly, and before long, Vulture Creek starts to attract a lot of attention.

Homesteaders and simple folk looking to share in the opportunities such a discovery offers

Merchants looking to provide all the building materials needed to feed the boom

And the bigger mining companies, looking to monopolise the veins.

Pictured here, one of the carts used to haul supplies from VC up to the mine head.  Old Bob Harper can’t sit in a saddle these days what with his piles an’ all.  He’s kinda hoping his wife doesn’t notice he’s liberated her favourite sewing chair, but it does make for a mighty comfortable ride!

All together now!

“Ay, ay, ay, ay,
Canta y no llores,
Porque cantando se alegran,
cielito lindo, los corazones”

With the residents of VC having coin in their pockets, others come to help relieve them of it.  Always wanted a mariachi band......nice addition to the growing civilian population.

Boot hill Minis, next on the to buy list, their civilian Mexican men and women.

Problem with civilians....is they get in the way of the lead!

Top couple look like they could be dancing along with the mariachi band!

Anyways.....

I’m soon going to start painting my ultimate gang.....

All based on film characters from my favourite movies.  I may end up with a few extra so they can be swapped about but going to comprise of the following (all made by Knuckleduster except Tuco - Wargames Foundry).  They have silly non copyright names on their web site, but we all know who they really are.... ;)

Blondie - Clint Eastwood - Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Bernardo - Charles Bronson - Magnificent Seven
Harry Luck - Brad Dexter - Magnificent Seven
Frank - Henry Fonda - Once upon a time in the West
Angel Eyes - Lee Van Cleef - Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Reserves

Britt - James Coburn - Magnificent Seven
Ramón Rojo - Gian Maria Volontè - Fistful of Dollars
Tuco Benedicto Pacífico Juan María Ramírez - Eli Wallach - Good, the Bad and the Ugly

I know they are not all “good” guys in the movies they are in, but to me, some of the best characters in my favourite western films.
