Title: [COMMERCIAL] Tabletop scenery
Post by: Tabletop World on August 21, 2010, 08:40:10 PM
Hello fellow hobbists!
We finally decided to join this great forum.
In this thread we will post photos of our modeling and paining projects. We hope you will enjoy it.

There's no better way to start then with our latest building - Guard Tower:

We will share with you the painting process of this huge building and update you every few days as the project evolves.
We want to give our building a very naturalistic look and so far we are very happy with the result.
The photos are not best quality (the colors are a bit pale) 'cause I forgot the equipment in the studio, but they are good enough to show the progress on the building.

Front view:

Side view:

Stonework:

Next: we will add some details around the tower and start painting stone stairs for the inside.

Tell us your thoughts.

Don't worry, we will remake most of our old stuff. Currently we are working on the new Merchant's House. It will have fully modeled interior with lots of furniture and details. The design will be more elaborate and complex as well.

Time for an update:
First floor of the tower is almost finished, we just need to add some grass between the stone blocks:

Ground floor interior, still missing some details:

First floor interior, no details yet:

Next we are going to paint the details (barrels, wooden stairs, hatch...) for ground and first floor interior, and 8 huge consoles which hold the guard rooms on the second floor.

Bloody bleeding hell!  :o
That is simply gorgeous.
I agree the bottom bit alone is a pearl - would do very nicely as a stronghold for my Wars of the Roses collection. I fear the upper storeys would push it just a touch too far towards a fantasy-only setting.
But it is a superb piece.  :-*

Thank you very much guys! We are really glad you like the model.

First we break a large stone into smaller pieces, then we use pliers to cut out small stone blocks. When we have enough material we start to build the stone walls like in real life. This is the only way to achieve natural look.

Yeah, we were thinking about it but haven't decided yet if we will go for it. The thing is, the whole interior should be way darker if you want to achieve the maximum effect.

When you break them into smaller pieces, what kind of hammer do you use?
Claw? Sledge, Rock hammer i woudl think but want to make sure.
As with the pliers. Do you use standard, grip, needle or what not? I would like to accomplish a similar effect as possible. ;-)

We use slate stone. Slates are very fine-grained rocks that consist of layers. We use a hammer and a chisel to split those layers apart. Then we use nipper pliers to cut the layers into small stone blocks.

Hope it helps. :)

Yeah, I love your stuff. The stone work is amazing, and the cact that the casts come out so well.

I notice on you website that you dont keep producing the models? How many to you produce in a run?
Title: Re: Tabletop scenery
Post by: Tabletop World on September 19, 2010, 08:08:03 PM
Thank you guys!!

@ Sangennaru - Old and worn out wood tends to look like this. ;)

@ Bezzo - I agree, it is not the most realistic choice, although the tiles can be painted. We simply wanted to give the tower some brighter color. If we painted the tiles in brownish colors as well, they wouldn't stand out from the rest of the wood.

@ Ramshackle_Curtis - Only our old models are out of production, because the molds for them are simply inefficient.

Ok, time for an update.
The four guard rooms are finished (except for the shutters which will be added later). Note that the guard rooms are not assembled perfectly, that is because they are not glued together yet:

Next: interior details for guard rooms and shutters.

Someones jealous!!!

Haha, no you do wonderful work too. I am still looking forward to seeing some more of your excellent scenery and artillery pieces.

I like the 'scratching post' wood effect. It does look like really weather-beaten wood and at this scale, I think it is important to exaggerate detail like that.

That watchtower is astonishing, truly fabulous work, very well done.

of course i am, they make some pieces of masterworks that are awesome!  o_o
but still i'm not convinced by the wood! :)

actually, i'm making more of them, a bit all around the genders: i've started some 15mm old west stuff (just started for fun), it's LOL... :)

btw..
Hey, Tabletop guys, how did you started this serious activity?

did you just buy the moulding stuff and started everything? or what? did you work for some companies before?

That Merchant's House reeks of atmosphere! And character. And general 'loveliness'.

Being of virtually nil use to me I still want to possess it, and look at it, and probably stroke it from time to time.

Yes, it is one of these precioussss things...

The detailing is awesome, the lovely interior in particular. :-*
A quibble might be that the designer mixed up carcass and stone at the upper storeys. Therefore, magic fixing aside, gravity would tear down the whole construction. ;)

We are going to build 3 town houses next. Together with Merchant's House, they will represent the core of the town. In size they will be similar or a bit smaller then the Merchant's House and less fancy. After that, we are going to make more specialized buildings like windmill, blacksmith's forge, inn, marketplace...

Good grief, I know if I ordered your stuff I would still never get it finished as I am just too slow in painting large objects. However the appetite is there - and mine is usually pretty big. Really nice though. If I am allowed some criticism it would run along the lines of Captain Blood. The merchant house is a little over the top - nevertheless an absolutely beauty to behold. Ah - these two souls in my chest!  lol

As you can see, it is less fancy then the Merchant's House but still similar in style so they go together very well.

found this thread today ... EXTREMELY cool, that is! Quite for fluffbunnies like me and full of "ambiente"!

I thought about a Cadwallon-table for a while now - even more so with bruegelburg-minis added to (the) Confrontation ... looking at this ... the table comes closer and closer ...

Amazing!

best wishes

Very, very nice work.

I never would have thought to use actual stone for terrain construction.

What sort of adhesive do you use to keep them together during the casting process?  I thought that most glues had a negative effect on casting (fumes and off-gasses)?

Ever plan to do anything other than medieval?  I'd love to see your take on some Conan the Barbarian or "ancient/fantasy" buildings.

We use silicone glue (silicone glue gun).
Sure we do, but first we want to create enough medieval buildings to be able to build a small medieval town.
After that we will cover ancient, pirate, old urban and many other historic and fantasy worlds.

Our next project is Blacksmith's Forge. It is hard to tell when will it be finished, we are very busy this time of year, prior Christmas.

Yes, we missed a couple of the original buildings I would love to have, including the blacksmith's forge (but we did pick up the most unique ones, the ruined coach house and the old factory).

I am looking forward to the revised forge.  In my experience, TTW's original releases were brilliant, but their new ones are even brillianter - they take brilliantocity to new heights!

I first saw Tabletop World was mentioned over on Frothers and their stuff looked so good I ordered the Supplies, Furniture and Gravestone sets.

In one piece there is a plate with 2 apples and a bunch of grapes - the grapes are well formed and the apples have a stalk and leaf on top.

http://www.tabletop-world.com/

20 days from issuing order to delivery (they are in Croatia) but well worth the wait.

In the Supplies set there is a hollow barrel that has the engraved plank and grain on the inside All the wood items are nicely grained. In one piece there is a plate with 2 apples and a bunch of grapes - the grapes are well formed and the apples have a stalk and leaf on top.

Furniture - all wooden items are engraved on both sides. The able tops have some cast in plates etc and in one piece there is a plate with 2 apples and a bunch of grapes - the grapes are well formed and the apples have a stalk and leaf on top

Gravestones set includes a number of roosting birds which are useful, gravestones are well detailed - one has a small candle moulded onto it.

I will certainly be keeping an eye on their site for new pieces

Very very very nice indeed!

In my opinion (but it's a personal flavour) the rocks are a little too much... well, separated, but for the rest the look is awesome.

And i'm mostly impressed from the casting result, being a caster myself: The edges and the holes are so perfect!!! :-*

Yup, consider this ordered.. Also the thing with the rocks is it is actual stonework. They literally make the buildings from real stone. (Or at least they used to.) Bravo on the new building.

I know that, but generally speaking it is not relevant: if you need to do fur you don't use fur, same for ground, for wood (sometimes) or for many other materials. It is a scale work, and the corrisponding material isn't necessary the best one to choose.

Still i think that the result is impressive. But for my flavour a stonework done with - say - worked plaster, or greenstuff could be even better! =)

Yesterday I received my order; just under 2 weeks! (I wasn't expecting it so soon so it was a very pleasant surprise when I opened the box). I'm very impressed with the cottage; very clean casting and a good fitting of the roof on the building (well it is just 2 pieces but speaking from experience even that can go wrong!). The well is a nice piece too with the same comment.
Hope to see more of these kind of "simple" buildings.

Really lovely, and the prize is great as well, the smaller buildings are a great start fo someone like me who is slowly getting some terrain in.
Are you planning more Things in that Prize range?
Yes we do. ;)

Lovely as always.

I just wish we'd managed to nab all your old stuff before you stopped producing it.  And then we could get this (we're much nippier buying the new things now).  By now we'd have a comfy little hamlet!

The dog is permanently blocking that door, isn't he?  Typical dog!
:D
With next mold the dog will be removed from the model because of the minor technical issues.

Hi there, I am really just a lurker here, but I must say I loved the pictures of your products that you have posted here and instantly jumped onto your website and ordered several buildings from you. I cant wait to get them so I can add them to my campaign.. the players are going to go insane when they see them..   :-*
Thank you very much! :)

...and now for the Christmas special offer:

It breaks my heart to say I wanted to give the two buildings to Michael for Christmas, but since the windmill was added and he saw it on some other website, he suggested we order the lot as our anniversary present to ourselves.  How can one tactfully say "damn it Michael I've already ordered it for you for Christmas"?  Couldn't find a way, so we'll have two of the smaller buildings soon.

So, um, any suggestions for what to give my husband for Christmas now that this idea is shot down in flames?  (And no, I don't plan to give up the extra buildings.)

That's an item you'd like to have for its own sake, not just to place on a game board. Hell, you could build a gameboard arround that windmill alone.

Hm, that's tough. How about trying to get hold of a miller and the people who live in the houses (including the dog). Then again it depends entirely on what Michael is really interested in. Maybe the garden details around the houses? Something like fences or walls or the like?

getting a topless GM for your next RPG. apparently it actually happened and no they were not moobs*.

*moobs = man boobs

Not going shirtless in front of the other players, sorry.  And not having some other trollop going topless when I can't (or won't) so that idea won't fly.  Besides, most of the other players are married, and I doubt their wives are going to much like the game turning into a strip house.

A while back, my gaming group considered something similar as a possible 'bachelor' party for one of our members. After debating several different variations, we finally realized a critical flaw: You can enjoy boobs, and you can enjoy games, but there are very few scenarios in which you will be able to fully enjoy both.

Sometimes, you can't have it all.

If she's sufficiently endowed, surely the screen would be unnecessary.  Who'd be looking at her dice?  But that does rather support Hatemonger's point about you could enjoy one or the other...

Looking forward to that windmill arriving! (Just to get this topic back on the rails.)

Mine arrived a little while ago. Absolutely up to the usual high Tabletop World standards. Top-notch casting, beautiful model. Lovely!

I agree with Sangennaru that it's less fancy than their other buildings, but for me that was a positive. I'm going to make up some faction banners/signs and decorate it a few different ways, depending on what I'm playing.

I might even use it without the vanes as a storage silo or odd little steampunk tower (with some brass tanks and pipes and other add-ons) for Warmachine.

Sounds like an excuse to buy a couple of others!  One with, one without vanes, and one modified for steampunk.

OoooOOoOooooOOOoOoooOooOOOOO.... nice!  We will certainly be treating ourselves to one.

The models themselves are very reasonably priced given their quality.  Shipping to the U.S. is expensive.  But to be honest, with the total price including s&h to the U.S. I have always figured I received great value for the money - these buildings are the most detailed ones on the market that I know of, and most come with a substantial amount of furniture and etc. that beautifully compliment the building (and would be pretty pricey if you were buying them separately from someone).

The coaching inn is a beautiful design. It's really too bad though, ever since there was a shift in style toward the more crudely etched wood and shingles the new kits don't, in the end, do that much for me. I think the sculptor must thing he is doing a favor for painters, as in oh, I'm going to give you all this great detail to drybrush. It really doesn't do anyone favors. It's not easier to paint. It looks worse, not better. A model like this shouldn't show any more wood grain than balsa wood already shows.

What it does is take a kit that would otherwise be suitable for a A-grade paiinter/modeler to pull out all the stops and present in a world-class competition and pull it down to the level of other miniatures buildings common in the marketplace.

Sorry, I don't understand where you're coming from.
Isn't the whole point of high quality terrain painting to have as much detail as possible? I see nothing wrong with this kit. On the contrary.

What Spooktalker is talking about is not neccessarily the "level" or amount of details - it's more like the "depth" of the detail. It's a common point of discussion with the way the wood beams of those half-timbered buildings look. You could take a simple bar of balsa wood, cast that in resin and you have a nice realistic wooden structure. If you imagine the creases on this building's wood beams in reality - they would be thick as your finger. So the point is: Yes, there is lots of detail, tons of structure in the wood (beams and roof) but this is all very much out of scale. This results in a somewhat cartoony look that doesn't appeal to some people - especially if you have an authentic and historical focus.

Personally, I don't really mind this overdone wood grain and I do appreciate how easily this paints up. Also, looking at the figures I own (Black Scorpion, Outpost wargames, Foundry) - they all have a very cartoony look to them themselves and so I find everything fits together quite nicely. A more modest approach to wood grain and stone structures would certainly suit a warband full of Tom Meier sculpts. But I don't have that. And I look forward to receiving this beautiful building.  :)

Oh dear.  I went to order the two buildings Michael and I agreed on and more stuff kept falling into the cart.  Darn.
Seriously, these are lovely pieces.  I get what the more skilful painters are on about, but they do for folks at my level just fine.

I love the detail, my problem with this building is how impracticle the shape is... I mean there's not a great deal of space inside and 3 doors seems odd.... but then it's just game terrain and I should just get over it lol.

Yeah, I too kind of wondered about this. The inside seems surprisingly small/narrow, especially considering how large and detailed the interior of their previous buildings is. I have been thinking about what would be the best place to put stairs in there. Since I have their now OOP Ruined Coaching Inn - which is HUGE HUGE HUGE - I somewhat doubt that this new inn is really their largest and most complex building. But I will hold back judgement until I have the piece in my hands. From their previous buildings which I have, however, I know that they are rather large compared to those of other producers.
And I love the 45° shape of the inn. It's the perfect piece to create rows of buildings with.

Small but perfectly formed! Mine arrived this morning. A tremendously lovely model.

Personally, I think it's ok when buildings are a bit smaller than 100% scale on the tabletop. Those minis need room to move.

well, that's 90 euros + vat = 110 euros for a single unpainted building we are talking about. It is beautiful, sure, but the price is prohibitive. :-\

I'm going to back the new KS for the Otherworld Skirmish Game, I thought to use this and the rest of their line to build a town/village, but I decided against it for a few reasons.  1) Cost, the scenery, while gorgeous, is just way too expensive for my wallet.  2) Space, I'm getting married next year, and while the future Mrs Too Bo Coo is very understanding about my hobby, she has her limits.  I need to try and maximize my gaming pieces, and the other problem is that this terrain is so particular, it has no real use for historicals, whereas I can use my terrain I have for SAGA to play Otherworld fantasy games.  I dont think  Fantasy themed terrain works well the other way.  All that said, I'm still a big fan of your stuff!

Received my inn, town square, trade goods and free bonus cottage in Australia today.

Wow!  This is some seriously gorgeous stuff. Perfectly cast, no air bubbles or flash, and incredible details everywhere that you just want to paint straight away. It actually looks even better in the hand than on the site.

If you've been hesitating wondering whether it's worth it, from me it's a resounding "yes!".   8)

We use slate stone. Slates are very fine-grained rocks that consist of layers. We use a hammer and a chisel to split those layers apart. Then we use nipper pliers to cut the layers into small stone blocks.

Do you know if there's a specific type of slate you use? I notice there's a lot of "Aquarium Slate" on ebay, but I'm not sure if that's the same thing.

We present you our new medieval Townhouse.
It is the first one of the several houses that will be designed in a way that when you put them together they form a medieval street line.

My biggest problem with this deal, is that you have to buy every model you sell it hit the $500 level. I really wish some of your archived stuff was still offered, cause it'd let me get that much stuff and be more choosy about it.

Silly gripe, I know. Just putting it out there. :)
Title: Re: Tabletop scenery
Post by: Timbor on July 25, 2014, 04:48:32 PM
My guess is that the offer is geared towards group orders.  I am not sure why the old stuff is no longer available - I have some of the kits and it can be tricky to assemble.  I bet the old molds wore out and they wanted to try something new.

Great job!  I will have to add it to the wants list, along with the coaching inn which I still need to collect...

With TTW the risk of them stopping production of a piece is too high; we just get 'em when they're available.  Missed out on some of the early stuff because we thought we'd wait -- was that ever a mistake!  I do wish for a US distributor, though...

The stuff is not only made EXTREMELY well, the casting is also top of the line. As in: the best resin scenery casts I have ever received. The detail is insane and there are no air bubbles.

I really like your original, simpler guard tower. Any plans to bring that model back into production?  :)
Title: Re: Tabletop scenery
Post by: Neotacha on July 22, 2015, 03:56:56 PM
I like the openness of the old blacksmith's forge.  The other seems too compressed to me (although I like it a great deal, too).  I'd very much like to see all of the old models back in production (at least the ones we missed getting before we learned to grab at once).  The assembly was nearly idiot proof even though it is trickier than stacking boxes on boxes.

Any chance of those poor old unloved originals being re-released?

Title: Re: Tabletop scenery

My guess is that the old models were discontinued once the moulds had worn out, and there were not enough orders coming in to justify the expense of making a new mould.  Either that or they wanted to do something different.

Post by: mweaver on July 23, 2015, 04:21:10 AM
We have the previous incarnation of that large guard tower, and it assembled and painted up very well.  The pieces fit together so well that I left one wall of each level unglued for interior access - they come out easily when I want them to, and stay snug in place otherwise.  Brilliant model.

As for the old models, some will be re-released, some will not. We will let you know when the time comes ;)

We have a sneak peek of our current project for you - a Town Gate! For this Christmas we decided to do something really special. The model will be massive and highly detailed with fully operational gates. It will be released around November 15.
This is just a "work in progress" picture of the part of the building. We still have a lot of work to do.

Of course not many town walls remain now, but they would have been there in medieval times - which is the era I will be portraying :)

So that's all ordered and paid for.  One very nice thing about TTW is that they so often release a nice piece right at this time of year.  We can legit call it our joint anniversary present and have a nice excuse to buy what's new.

One day I really have to paint some of this stuff...

What a wonderful gigantic centre-piece of terrain.

One very nice thing about TTW is that they so often release a nice piece right at this time of year.

Ha ha, absolutely! I have been thinking the exact same thing lately. The Coaching Inn, the Mansion, now the Town Gate. I love this consistency. Plus, they get better and better (and bigger).

One day I really have to paint some of this stuff...

Same here. My Tabletop World backlog alone is huge...  ::)

But if there is one thing I have learned in the Wargaming industry, then it is: Buy while it is available. So many awesome things went out of production and just disappeared. I'm happy at least the TW Guard Tower is back.

Yes, but it doesn't show D and E attached to B.  I may not want such a long wall on the board during the game.  I'm sort of assuming they do, but I'd like to be certain.

It would be awesome to see someone pick up this wall and gate section, and a bunch of the buildings, and make a big build where the houses are built into the inner side of the walls of the city...  8)

To me it looks like E and F are the ends of the wall on each end. C and D are specific for either end of the gate and A and B are the basic sections that can be used repeatedly.

It would be A and E or A and F I would wondering if they're interchangeable. I would think so.

The gate is a good 16"/40.5 cm on it's own.  The houses are pretty big as well, unless you limit yourself to the smaller cottages.  The stone bridge is 13"/33 cm by itself.  The coaching inn is huge and a great space eater.  While the actual footprint of the various houses might be small, they tend to spread themselves a bit in the upper stories.  On top of that, you'd want a bit of space to put between them.

Yeah, when everything gets painted (are there people who manage to paint everything they buy?  ;)) it would look cool.  If we're still alive and LAF is still around in say, 30 or 40 years, I'll post pictures of everything we have (painted) from TTW.

If everyone who owned their stuff could somehow get it all together, imagine what an enormous (and stunning) town that would be!

There are a couple of their older pieces we never managed to get, so now we leap on whatever is released with glad cries immediately lest it disappear before we can buy it.

Oh dear!  We haven't even opened the box from the last order yet!

That looks very nice, and I'm sure we'll be ordering one soon.

Very nice (seems odd to say that about a ruined house and rubble, but still).

So, um, is this new and you haven't announced it yet, or did I miss the announcement?

It is technically part of the wall set!

This is true.  But it's a new part of the set, different to the others, and an announcement would call greater attention to the entire set.  I think they missed the boat by not announcing a new addition to the walls.  The towers aren't just extra, slightly different wall segments; they are key to creating a different look with the wall bits one already has.

We neeeed another ruined house! Mordheim!

Did you ever thought making ruined options for your existing available houses, for ex ruined first floor and/or roof?

I'm afraid that - if i understood their sculpting method - that would be a little overcomplicated. For the effort required, they would sculpt another model entirely as well. :(

I initially bought your well as it was all I could afford at the time. More recently your bridge piece which is still unpainted but loved......I will have to buy this as it is beyond 'wow'.

This is pretty awesome! The goal is very high, but I see you're almost reaching it already, good for you! :)
Excellent sculpts indeed. Maybe a bit too much of a dollhouse for me right now, but stunning nonetheless.
