Title: Some Heroquest Nostalgia
Post by: KeyanSark on September 15, 2010, 12:13:33 PM
Hi all:

I have been revisiting Heroquest this summer, and finishing painting all my miniatures. I will show here only the latest ones. For those interested in "classics", here are some links to my blog:

For the classic monsters:
Heroquest Monsters (http://keyansark.blogspot.com/2010/08/heroquest-revisitando-un-clasico.html)

For Skaven
Skaven, part I (http://keyansark.blogspot.com/2010/08/heroquest-skaven.html)

Skaven, part II (http://keyansark.blogspot.com/2010/08/heroquest-skaven-ii.html)

Now, the pics. Here is the Gargoyle: a smaller version of the Bloodthirster of Khorne, which, itself, was GW "bastard" version of Tolkien's Balrog.

There are more pics in the below link, with details on how I painted it. If anyone is interested I can translate some parts.
The Gargoyle (not Rich's one) :D (http://keyansark.blogspot.com/2010/08/heroquest-la-gargola.html)

And now, some add-ons from Reaper. First, Jade Dancing Girl, which I will use as "Generic Rescuable Lady"

And my final addition, Yvonne Warmaiden: a heroine for the group

Very cool KeyanSark.  I have a lot of fond memories of that game.  Definitely would have looked cooler with painted mini's back when we were playing it.  I like what you done so far.

Got a set awaiting paint. Hopefully I'll be able to lure some of the kids in the family (and my own future sprogs) into playing it. When that day comes, I'll have a reason to paint the minis up. =)

You've done a nice job with yours! Pity the blog is in spanish, but hey - atleast it's possible to understand some of it. =)

Great stuff - but now you've planted the idea of another project in my brain!!  >:( ;)

I will attempt to leave my copy of Heroquest safe and sound in the cupboard, underneath the box of epic Spacemarine stuff for a rainy day!

Nice blog by the way - loving the blue fimir and I actually really rate the zombies and mummies as decent minis - and as for the brilliant chaos sorcerer! Good job!

Excellent bright colours, you've done it justice. I really like the additions too, if you can find them the plastic minis released for the 90's edition of talisman make great Hero quest figures.

I remember buying this after seeing the very first advert on the telly and actually having the cash because I'd been saving for a new bike. Who needs the outdoors.  Buying it doubled my mini collection instantly. Those orcs were in my OG army for years.

My first copy is a bit ropey these days but I picked up a mint copy a few years ago together with the expansions I bought they are waiting for the same reason as phreed, my second son is due in December so only another 6-8 years to wait  lol.

Thants, epic huh? Perhaps I should post some pics.........

Indeed! They are my Heroes (and my Avatar)

Look at them...

The Barbarian

The Elf

The Wizard

The Dwarf
(http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/3835/enanos.jpg)

For Sir Ragnar I use the Talisman paladin

And the Dwarf is usually replaced by this one

Looking good! I also have a lot of affection for the old Citadel "character" plastics: Talisman (and it's 3rd edition expansions), Heroquest, Advanced Heroquest, Warlock of Firetop Mountain, Dungeonquest, Heroes for Dungeonquest, etc.

I received a rather chewed-up Heroquest Necromancer in a batch of undead figures recently and I'm in the process of reconditioning him:

I've also been tinkering with a repair on a damaged Advanced Heroquest Man-at-arms to make him over into a city watchman:

The Heroquest & Advanced Heroquest Elf figures were the first ones I painted with the Foundry Paint system to test it out (and I still haven't quite finished them...!):

Also a preslotta FA14 Elf from the dawn of time...:

Just for fun, here's a Talisman Swashbuckler from my collection (expertly painted by Steve Dean):

Painted these last year:

The four Dungeonquest heroes:

The four Heroquest heroes:

The four Advanced Heroquest heroes:

A bit shiny (revarnished since) and photos are a bit dark.

Always 'short' of goblins Bezzo, us Orcs need our slaves to fetch and carry.

Sadly, I've been told by Mrs Orc if I bring any more 'plastic crap' into the house before getting rid of some other stuff first, she's going to stab me in the eye. Otherwise, I'd be all over you like a virulent fungus. I love those late-80s-early-90s sculpts.

The first miniatures I ever painted were from Heroquest and Battlemasters.  Several of my goblins were painted gold, they were intended as goblin golems.  lol

A little addition, one old Black Orc to be used as Warlord in the appropriate Quests

I can use it to show how I create Orc Skin. Black Orcs are simply a wash of Dark Green on the Goblin Green baselayer. Orcs have a higlight with Goblin Green to restore the color. Goblins are done the same, with an additional light of Green+Yellow.

Wonderful!

I found a bunch of the heroquest plastics in a flea market a week ago, and this thread inspires me... oh, too many projects!

I have a mint, still shrink wrapped Heroquest box here, I have been planning on putting up on ebay.  Soooooo tempted to open it right now.
Must... resist....

Anyone interested in playing Hero Quest can do so by downloading all components (except furniture and minis, of course) from here:
http://heroquestbaker.altervista.org/indexenglish.htm

It's a completely legit site, with permission from Hasbro to offer these downloads. He's got all the stuff released for the european edition (thus no Elf and Barbarian quest packs). He's also slightly religious about Stephen Barker ("the only true author") which is amusing. =)

If you're intent on playing the US version, there's another site offering that here:

This is another fantastic site

They are maintaining which was one of the classic HQ sites on the net (the old Agin's Inn). They have almost everything HQ related and some gorgeous new tiles. I am working with them right now to help them translate the site to spanish.

While we're posting links, here are the CCM Wikipedia pages I made showing the various figures:

Advanced Heroquest:

Heroquest:
http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Heroquest

Warlock of Firetop Mountain:

Dungeonquest:
http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Dungeonquest

Warhammer Quest:
http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Warhammer_Quest

Talisman:
http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Talisman

Battle Masters:
http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Battle_Masters

Some of the pages are incomplete, so if anyone has any images of the figures that they would like to add, you can post them to this thread and I will snitch them and put them on the Wiki.

Love those zombie minis!

Dug out my battered old copy the other day- can't remember who mentioned it but I like the idea of painting it up for when the boy is old enough - he's just turned two a couple of months back so I might be done with Orc's Drift by the time he's old enough - need to strip my terrible 12 year old paintjobs off though!   ;D

Funnier than my painting back when I was a spotty little herbert are the character sheets me and my brothers filled in all those years ago which were still in the box!

We had mottos, much of which were written very much in earnest, stating intent -  Kill all ye who attack! and the terse I will kill
reassurance to our fellow adventurers? -  Don't worry I'm not cyco (original spelling!),
and lots of advice! - search traps before treasure, Be aware and Magic first then talk

Shame I haven't got a scanner to scan them in - our attempts at coats of arms were pretty funny too...  ;D

Happy Days!  :D

Really nice, bright popping colours. Shame the flames always break off those candles, I have a few sets and the candle flames are missing on them all. The rats tails also use to break easily.

And I finally finished painting all my HQ minis (pending two pieces of furniture) with these two Chaos warriors. Painted in Khornate colours as I wanted to experiment with red armour for another future project.

The technique used, with WIP pics is detailed at
http://keyansark.blogspot.com/2010/10/guerreros-del-caos.html

And the final result is this. What do you think: Yellow or Khaki highlights?

Brililant - great minis and superb armour - might have to borrow that!

More pics, including a size comparison and other (yet unpainted heroes) can be seen at.

I'd just like to say a warm "thank you" to the OP of this topic. I think I must have referred back to it more than any other. It has inspired me to paint my HQ furniture and I'm having great fun doing it. One of my many weaknesses as a painter is trying to work out which damned colour to paint anything.  So, I have this topic permanently open on my laptop when I'm painting so I can copy what KeyanSark has done and (apart from the rats which I haven't quite got the hang of yet  :'() it's worked very well.

Thanks again, KeyanSark, I'm having fun painting - and that doesn't happen very often.

Hi!

Thank you all for your comments!  ;)

Today I just managed to finish painting my copy of HQ with the last two pieces of furniture!

The Weapons Rack
(http://www.displacedminiatures.com/images/1.img.1287258747furniture13.JPG)

and the Fireplace
(http://www.displacedminiatures.com/images/0.img.1287258747furniture12.JPG)

And more monsters to finish my collection...

Some skaven assassins
(http://www.displacedminiatures.com/images/4.img.1287258747assassin1.JPG)

Some additional skeletons
(http://www.displacedminiatures.com/images/2.img.1287258747skeleton1.JPG)

And... The Stone Gargoyle!!

It can be used as a stone golem, as an additional golem, or as a cool way to show those moments where the greedy heroes enter a room where a menacing, immobile, statue is located...

... just to discover it comes to life when they try to stole the treasure!!

In fact, it can also be used as an Idol from the Gods of Chaos in that other game that takes place a very long place in the future and has something with hammers  ;D

These two months have been real fun, and I can now proudly show you a full copy of my HQ. I cannot put a direct link to it as it is hosted in blogger, but go to the link below, scroll down all the entry, and clic on the small final image.

Finally, Doug, sorry I cannot show a pic of the Throne as I decided to leave it unpainted. But have a look to the tables. You can paint it the same way: Earth as base colour, a deep wash of Vallejo Smokey Ink, and some highlight in khaki

Again, thank you all for your comments!

Hey great - I've just started the fireplace. I like your glow effect on the burning wood.

I thought the throne may be more than just a plain wood finish. It looks as though it may be more ornate - perhaps with inlaid work - different wood panels, enamels maybe. Looks like I'll have to do some of my own thinking. Damn.... :o.. ;D

Nice weapons rack, by the way.....

I like the idea of having a " stone gargoyle". Anyone got a spare of that figure they'd part with? And I'd be interested in HQ zombies as well.

Don't know if you've looked on the web but there's guys out there that make extra tiles so you don't need to keep using the same old board. Nice to add a bit of variety. Try typing greywolfs map tiles in google....

I've got boxes of the old Games Workshop Dungeon Floor tiles which should do the job plus Nightmare in Blackmarsh, a "dungeon planner" pack which includes a playsheet of a complete village. I reckon these would work with HQ.

Hmm I actually dug out HQ and played it some years back... I wish I hadn't  - it's not a very good game to a grown up I think! My child hood illusions were ruined.  :`

I don't think I'll be playing it without enhancing the rules somewhat, in fact I started doing a bit of work on it a few years ago which I must dig out. I added more character detail, more variety in combat (although still based on the simple-but-fun system of dice), character development through success and experience, more rounded-out monsters and more interesting scenarios with potential for more than just fighting everything that is encountered.

I hope that it will still be a good game for beginners but with a bit more depth. I may even get my wife to play it (maybe :D)

There are homegrown advanced rules out there on a couple of websites. I'm on a different computer so don't have favourites but I'll look tomorrow and post some links.

Incidentally I have unpainted HQ Dwarf & Barbarian figures on ebay UK at the moment. Happy to ship internationally.  ;)
