Title: Halloween Goodies
Post by: Sterling Moose on September 16, 2010, 03:27:35 AM
This from Lemax, called Terror Bridge, probably available from a number of outlets, I got mine from Michaels in Canada.
Might need a bit of a wash and a dry brush but it certainly has potential.

Yes that is a find. What kind of store was it? I would if its available in the US.

Michaels is a chain craft/hobby store. We have them in NYS.

Yes, Michaels is a craft/hobby store very much like Hobby Lobby.  Lowes, in the US, carries the Lemax Xmas village stuff so there's a chance they'll carry the 'Spooky town' stuff too.

How much is it out of interest?

I think it was CDN$27.99 retail but Michaels have a 40% off sale from now until Halloween so I paid around CDN$16.  If there are any left closer to Halloween they'll probably drop to 50% off, and if they go back to full price, there's a 50% off voucher with their weekly flyer.

Excellent, off to Michael's at lunch break!  Thanks for the tip.

Michael's Spookytown products are currently 40% of here in New York State, according to the local flyer. Although one could wait for a 50%-off coupon to arrive after the sale's ended, I wouldn't advise waiting too long: last year and the year before that our local Michael's had pulled down over 90% of their Halloween stock and replaced it with Christmas product by the third week of October. They didn't even keep their Halloween product on the shelves 'til Halloween. (Want to get your Halloween decorations one week before the holiday? Not at Michael's...  >:( )

Due to tight finances, I passed on this piece when I first saw it - but the more I look at it, the more I think I must have it for my Strange Aeons games. If the Michael's around here still have any, that is...

This is an online retailer.  Haven't used them, though.

Nice site.  The bridge is $11.99, didn't look at the shipping though.

Last year at Micheals in the halloween stuff I got 2 packs of their "pile of skulls".  They make great jungle terrain, to mark when your intrepid explorers run the risk of cannibals.  Or the way to mark the "peaceful" village from the not so peaceful one.

Hadn't seen that one before.  Will have to check our local Michael's and Lowes.

I was only mildly aware of Lemax at Halloween, though the first week of November is often my happiest time of the year, with after Halloween sales. Cheap plastic goblets  can be cutdown to marvelous creepy pillars and other structural members, for instance. If  you see them for 75-90% off, usually two weeks on, all the better!

However, the clearance discounts have been shorter and less of late. I suspect the stores have decided that storage is better than training folks to buy cheap for next year.

I've bought a fair amount of Lemax post-Xmas from discount department stores, like Shopko and Target, so I'll be checking them out for Halloween, something they've tended to cover only as costumes, but I do recall the All Saints' Eve display area was rather large at Target.

In spite of being somewhat a diamond in the rough, my being a devotee draconis means I MUST HAVE THAT BRIDGE!!!

Thanks, indeed!

Doug

I've been in a Michael's where the Halloween stuff was across the aisle from the Christmas stuff - all motion-sensing stuff that played sound effects as you walked past.

The blood-curdling screams mingling with the "Holly Jolly Spendmoneyherebecauseitstheholiday" songs were particularly terrifying.

I've got some of the Lemax display pieces.  After several years I'm noticing some deterioration,  I'll see if a coat or two of paint arrests the problem.  A few years back they had some cars, part of their Christmas town line.  The vehicles were older models, I'd say 1940's-1950's, and they were the perfect scale for 28mm figures.

And caution as to which paint; much of the plastic may be attacked. Also, I had some of their wood (balsa?) the was ney sturdy, but did I mention 75-90% off?  :D

This is certainly the list for that image!

I was thinking a mix of acrylic craft paint and Elmer's glue.

I finally had a little bit of a budget to spend on gaming (my gaming budget's been frozen for several months, thanks to a recent move) so I went into Michael's to see about picking up that "gargoyle bridge." Sure enough, they've already pulled down more than 2/3 of their Halloween decorations - including the LeMax Spookytown stuff. Mind you this was on Saturday, the 16th. Excuse me, but WTF?! This is the second year in a row they've taken down most of their Halloween stuff more than two weeks before the actual holiday.

>:( >:( >:(

So now I'm off to find their corporate contact information and send them a lovely message thanking them for sending my business to their online competitors. (This sort of behavior is exactly why I have no compunction about giving my money to online businesses instead of local brick-and-mortar stores.)
