This question comes up from time to time, so I thought perhaps an inaugral Swashbuckling 'Where to get' sticky was in order... :)
Please add information about available 25mm/28mm scale ship models for wargamers, for the pirate era.
It's fine to add currently OOP models, by the way - these may come up on eBay and elsewhere from time to time. But please note whether they are currently in production or not, as far as you can tell.
If you have pictures of specific models, please add them, along with details of manufacturer, and ordering details / web links (if any).
Can we please concentrate on actual, purpose made 28mm-scale model vessels to start with?
I know many people have scratchbuilt their own, or acquired / ingeniously adapted ships from other sources like pound shops, dollar stores, McDonalds happy meal giveaways and Christmas crackers! Ditto Playmobil, Megabloks, Lego and so on. I know these brands have pirate-themed toys that can be adapted - but to repeat, this sticky is first and foremost to pull together a comprehensive list of actual purpose-designed model pirate era ships for gamers.
I'm going to kick off with:
Village Green, now manufactured by Stronghold Miniatures - although this company is currently in shutdown owing to family issues ::)
Three very nice ships, solid resin, crisp detailing, and with white metal accessories, lengths of dowel representing masts.
SHIP 1 Two masted Schooner / Brigantine £33.50
SHIP 2 Three masted square rigger / trading vessel £45.00
SHIP 3 2-deck 24-gun three masted vessel £60.00
I have the brigantine and the three master – both very nice and substantial models. I will take some pictures and add to this thread at some point soon…
Secondly, Dixon Miniatures.
Again, three very nice resin ships with well cast white metal accessories, not currently in their catalogue, but I believe you can still pick up two of them.
SHIP 1 Sloop
SHIP 2 Merchantman
SHIP 3 Man O’War
The Man O’War was a beautiful model and a beast of ship, but unfortunately, last I heard, the mould was shot, so they probably won’t be making any more. Wish I'd got one when they were still turning them out...
Dixon were certainly planning to keep producing the sloop and the merchantman though. Again, I have both these very nice models, and will post pics in due course - although I confess I haven’t yet made up and painted the sloop (and I’ve had it almost 10 years!)
Right – over to you…
Add away!

Scale Creep Miniatures has recently acquired the Flagship Games resin pirate ships. I have not dealt with SCM, but I have a couple of the FG ships - nice, practical models.

I second the recommendation of Games of War ships, by the way.

Well done Cianty - you've saved us all a lot of work ;)
That said, if anyone would like to add more pictures to this thread, it would be good to get a comprehensive catalogue :)

I think it would be great to have links to threads (be it here or on blogs or whatever) of people showing off their purchased versions so people get a better idea of what the models are like aside from the photos provided by the manufacturers. I still try to keep the thread up-to-date and include relevant links whenever I find them.

Hey Senor! You wanna pictures? I give you pictures..
The Dixon Miniatures Sloop, although she is not painted up as a Pirate ship, here she sails as a Schooner, "The Demeter".
She's had some additions and modifications, like the rat lines, bell, wheel etc and the gun ports closed up.

Nice boats and good prices (UK)
They have branched out more into 1930's period boats as well.

Nice one Captain Blood and all contributors here, this 'sticky' will prove a very popular resource I'm sure 8)

Two pages of ships!
-
Playmobil plastic pirate ships are great, if you want lots of room on deck for a boarding action.
Mega Bloks plastic pirate ships are also great, and are similar in size to the Playmobil ships, but require a bit more work to get rid of the little bumps and install proper decks. Fortunately, grooved decking material is available in both wood and styrene (a plastic) from ship and train modelling suppliers.
Both types of plastic toy pirate ships are larger than most of the resin pirate ships.
-
Regarding the old Dixon (not currently listed) ships. I am talking with Trevor about us re-moulding these as the origonal models have now come to light again. Mike Brooks used to cast these for Dixons and If I can salvage the masters then it may just be back on the menu later this year
Andy
-
Thanks for the heads-up, Andy! Keep us posted.
-
I have now got the three master models all repaired by Robin Hill who sculpts for me. I have bought these from Dixons so they will now become part of the Ainsty Range. Rubber is on order for the moulds so they should be ready to put back on sale shortly. Metalwork for them will be cast for me by Trevor at Dixons so everything will be as it was before on these models.
I would like to use some of the LAF members photos for the website, if anyone would be so kind as to give permission I shall be glad to offer a voucher for their use
Andy
-
Wish I could help, but I don't have any of the models. Will the models be available for the U.S. Customers?
Wingnut
-
Yes they will be available worldwide, but shipping may be expensive as they are heavy bits of kit!
-
You are welcome to use the photos of my Dixon Sloop used In the Dracula photo story over on the GothIc Horror board if you wish.
-
That is great news on the ships.
Any chance you could partner with Old Glory (who produce some nice resin vessels), and/or other manufacturers on the US side of the pond, in order to save us a bit on international shipping?
I'd be very appreciative of that, and imagine many others here in America would as well.
Joel is the person to talk to at Old Glory about that, I believe.
-
I will put some pics up in a day or so.
Thanks for the offer Malumute, the Dracula thread is excellent and the pictures so atmospheric too. much appreciated
I will send an email over to Old Glory and see what transpires.
Happy to do a bulk order when in production and have a shipping courier take a large parcel, might work out cheaper that way if enough people over there can get together?
Andy
-
Thanks for checking with Old Glory.
That is greatly appreciated, since I imagine air shipment will be a killer, with today's high fuel prices. Hopefully, that will drop to more reasonable levels, eventually.
Is ocean shipment, with insurance still an option from the UK?
I used to use that, or ISAL, on a lot of orders that were heavy, in order to save money on shipping costs, when I could plan ahead, and didn't need items urgently.
-
Heres a preview gallery. they will each come with wooden dowell masts and a selcetion of metalwork from those in the bags. Thats about 1 set for the large ship in the picture
Lanterns, Anchors, Hatchs and covers etc.

-
Marvellous! Any idea now of a date when they'll be available?
-
Dixons will be casting the metal parts and Trevor is moving workshops at the moment so I cant say for sure how quickly he can be ready to supply me metals. I hope to be casting the Hulls in around a week.
Once I get the moulds made I will put a note on here and allow pre-orders on the web shop. ships will of course be despatched in the order that orders come in.
Andy
-
Great to see these back in production, in my opinion the best of all the model ships that have been produced over the years. :)
I am sorely tempted to buy the big galleon..... :D
-
:o
Wow!
Those are some lovely hulls! :-*
-
A useful thread. Glad to hear that the Dixon ships are coming back through Ainsty.
-
Very niceee! I'd love to get my hands on one or two of those.
-
Very nice ships :-*, any idea if they will be avaliable at Colours?
-
Dont think I will have them ready for Colours, there is quite a bit of metalwork to go with each one and Dixons have been moving premises this month so havnt wanted to put him under any pressure. I hope to have some with me at Derby
-
When is Derby, for us new world customers who aren't in the know?
Any idea on pricing for the various vessels?
Any luck on negotiations/deals with Old Glory to produce them in the USA?
Really looking forward to the release of these.
-
Oh err yeah sorry. Derby is first weekend in October. Old Glory have at the moment declined the offer of stocking these in the states. and pricing is yet to be confirmed when I weigh up how much resin has gone into each casting. I will make voids to save on materials and weight as best I can without effecting the strength of the model. I need to work out costs for the metalwork that goes with each one too.
-
I would like to use some of the LAF members photos for the website
I've shot a few pics of the merchantman. Feel free to use :)

All three Ships are now on sale on the web site
-
I purchased all three from Dixon/Anisty Castings, the Sloop, Merchantman and Man-O-War. I am very pleased with them.
Once they are painted and outfitted I will post pictures on this forum.
The folks at Anisty were very helpful and made sure I was a happy customer.
I added these ships to a good sized collection I have accumulated from several manufacturers (...all the 25/28mm brands I have been able to find) and these are very nice. Look at the photos of these that can be found elsewhere on this Forum.
-
I must concur, having just received one of the Ainsty sloops, which I have been coveting for years.
I hope to add some other vessels to the "fleet" as funds permit.
Andy is a pleasure to do business with, and I'm very happy he has resurrected this line of vessels from a premature, watery graveyard.
-
I just wish they either came with gins, or that Ainsty had guns you coul order for them. I know there are other places to order the guns from, but I like one-stop-shopping. That would also ensure the guns worked really well with those particular ships.
-
I generally have deck guns with me at shows, I get these from Dixons, if you email me when ordering any of the ships I will mail you back
-
Hey guys, new here.
I've been gathering up some info for a blog I'm starting on my Old West and Pirates gaming efforts. Every time I looked on google for some info, it kept leading me back to this forum, so I figured I'd join.
Now, for my first post here - may I throw a curve ball to everyone? Please take this with a grain of salt, but I've started collecting some cheap Playmobil ships, and painting them up for gaming use. I've been a longtime playmobil fan (mainly as a kid) so I when my father and I got my nephew some playmobil pirates for his birthday, I immediately sized up the ships, and then when shopping. Turns out some of them are damn near perfectly sized for 28mm Pirating.
^This is a $35 ship I got off of ebay. Now, eventually I may replace the slightly comical sails...but all I did was paint it (it was originally a purple shade, with black and orange). This particular ship is actually a tiny bit too big, and will be mostly a terrain piece, sitting in port.
Since these are tests, I haven't gone nuts doing any details on the ships, or really painting them detailed - just some sprays, a bit of detail painting and some matte varnish.
This picture shows the hull of another playmobil ship which is much more 28mm friendly. It's a single masted ship, available in a couple of different versions over the years. This one sells brand new in Toy stores for $20 (USD)
Minis are Black Scorpion for reference. I'll be adding some Games of War swivel guns, some side cannons, and some deck guns, but this will allow me and my buddies to play on the cheap. On top of the perfect size and price, Playmobil ships are shockingly well built, and tough to boot --- no worries about handling them or breaking sails or masts etc. I know this probably flies in the face of most realism gamers, etc. I'm in the process of building an entire Pirate board, and crews, so I'll link my blog here sometime.
Weird solution. :)
-
I think a fair few have gone down the same route with Playmobil ships... I've certainly seen plenty of them on here before. So don't worry, you're not alone with your toys ;)
Welcome, by the way :)
-
Okay, cool, didn't think I could possibly be the only one to put two and two together :)
Especially on a German forum!
I have a buddy who runs a laser shop, very similar to Laser Dream Works which I just saw on here. I wonder if I could convince him to get into building ships too...
-
I didn't see the Disney radio-controlled Black Pearls mentioned. One came out with either the first or second Pirates of the Caribbean movie and the second came out with the third movie. Both convert well for used with 25mm/28mm figures. Disney marketed Queen Annes Revenge for the fourth movie and while it requires some major work, when modified it is a beautiful ship and also works well with 25mm/28mm figures. You can see pictures of these ships (still WIP) at leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=34316.msg403004#msg43004. I hope to have the finished ships posted in late June or early July. You can see their final makeover at www.warin15mm.com/Pirates.html

We invite your attention to LASER DREAM WORKS line of laser cut wooden model ship kits. With the completion of our successful Kickstarter Project, RUN OUT THE GUNS, all of our ship kits now include the appropriate cannon. Our range of ships is growing quickly with a wide range of hull sizes with cutter as small 10 inches and a sloop of war as large as 24.

Most of the ships we have done so far have been from the late 1700s and early 1800s. Our newest ship the "La Belle" dates from 1685 and has a bit more classical pirate look for fans of the golden age. You can see more of her here:

I finally got my hands on one of the OG25s ships, the Black Cutlass. I must say it is a very nice looking ship and heavy too. I like the wide body as to hold more undead pirate like figures. I'm pretty excited to replicate the sails in gauze from a picture someone posted from last years Historicon.
-
I bought a couple of laser-cut MDF ships from eleven tree designs. They are perfect. I just need to buy a few cannons and I am good to turn pirate. I will try and post some pictures soon.

Hello,
in this Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/firelockgames/blood-and-plunder) you will find another couple of fine resin-ships. Firelockgames are going to produce a sloop, a brigantine an a frigate. IMHO they look very good.

I think the topsail furls upwards but how do the jib sail and fore and aft mainsail furl (not sure of the correct terms) ?

My range of various ships for the Pirate Age (and others). They are papercraft models, easy to build yet sturdy for gaming. Build as many as you like and choose from many different options to print, ranging from new pristine to old and weathered ships, various colors etc.

Read more about them on my site at http://www.papierschnitzel.com/pirate-fleet-builder/ (http://www.papierschnitzel.com/pirate-fleet-builder/).
Here is an overview showing the scale with a reference 28mm mini.

The are available on my Gumroad store and on DTRPG. On Gumroad I have included the exclusive "wooden docks" too!

Looks like Reaper may be launching a 28mm scale galleon with their Reaper Bones Kickstarter 5.

Blood and Plunder - Firelock Games is alleged to be releasing a Sixth Rate Frigate model in December. I have way too many ships from them and many other manufacturers already. This model makes me see the potential for trouble ahead! See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrGbSgZU9fQ and/or https://www.beastsofwar.com/news/firelock-games-new-tease-frigate/

The 6th Rate Frigate arrived from Firelock Games in December and is as nice as all their other ships.
-
And Firelock games is currently (Oct 2020) running a kickstarter for new plastic kits, including a 28mm plastic Sloop with options for a few builds. It's not yet up on their site, but details here:

I have several of the Firelock Games resin ships and really nice.
I didn't see it mentioned, bu Old Glory 25s "Shipyard" has a nice selection too, I own several as well: https://oldglory25s.com/index.php?cat_id=72&catname=%27Buccaneer%20Wars%27
Another alternative is of course in this day and age is 3D printing. Check out some models from Printable Scenery: https://www.printablescenery.com/product-category/historic/historic-ships-and-pirates/
I have printed out three frigates and a wreck ship too.

Dark Ops has an MDF galleon I have my eye on.
https://www.darkops.co.uk/collections/fantasy-scenery/products/spanish-galleon-san-juan
Something to sail against the Kickstarter Reaper Frigate and the Blood & Plunder sloops we have on the way.
Dark OPs has some other ships as well but it is the San Juan that really catches my attention.

Those ships look absolutely great! And I think that the pricing is fair too.

TT Combat have just added some mdf ships to their range, there is a frigate for a rather reasonable £28!
