Title: Post-Apocalyptia, Part Two - 4-29-18. Did you think I was done?
Post by: Sinewgrab on January 12, 2011, 03:45:41 AM
As many of you know, I began a crazy thread of my Fallout models and terrain some time back. Rather than resurrect an old thread, I am going to start a new one, and just reference the old one here:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=16800.0

Any way, I am working on new terrain and models, so here are a couple of new (old?) Marx Cars of the Future to wet your whistle.

I feel pretty good about my weathering - it isn't spectacular, but it looks good on the table. I also have a barricade using some cars, a blown up engine car, and a police car in the works. Unfortunately, I am now out of Marx cars. I bought 16 of them before that particular ebay store ran out, but they are gone now. I have also found that the Battlefield in a Box Gothic Ruins work really well - and of course, they are now out of production. Bleargh.

I have also scratchbuilt a brahmin for my merchant, and I'll post him when the paint is done.

Well, here are a few more additions to the terrain.

Some fences...

A police car as well as one whose engine has blown up.

And an Enclave position. I knew the EE was good for something. Their imperial walls are almost perfect.

More to come...I am working on a Behemoth Cage, a barricade with a few cars as part of it, and painting a Brahmin for my Merchant.

He's added a useful link to the past stuff, so that was really helpful. Still I don't get tired of looking at the pics, so the thought of having a thread with all of it together has its appeals.  :)

The Commander

I have always felt that once a thread got over 10-12 pages, it became cumbersome to find items in, so I decided long ago that I wouldn't do that to other people. Don't worry too much, as I am running a game on this terrain in a week or so, and I'll post that here. Besides, I linked to the old one in the first post, so it isn't like I am hiding my madness, y'know? You can always check my gallery on LAF as well - they're all there.

And some more stuff that I finished yesterday - won't get much done today, as I have a Napoleonics game to go play.

A small barricade made of cars and such.

A cage for my not-yet-finished behemoth. Make this a goal for the SuperMutants I will. Amazing what use you can find for an old GI Joe backpack.

Eww, dead brahmin. Actually, it is the left overs from when I made a brahmin - waste not, want not.

And, finally, a bridge over these troubled waters. I left it in a lot better repair than most, but I really didn't feel like spending a lot of time doing battle damage, and so I'll divert any complaints by claiming the townsfolk keep it in reasonable repair. They don't like to swim.

Pretty simple construction - just some foam core, a bit of balsa, and some credit card tape tubes from work. All coated in my patented concrete /asphalt mix, and quick painted.

I am using a Fallout Skirmish ruleset that was made by our very own Malebolgia - I used to use Necromunda, but the rules just did not hold up the Fallout feel long term. Besides, the other one is free at the moment, and it feels like I am playtesting it, which is not a bad thing. If I make suggestions, he might even listen.

No not at all, I have just started making mine and it will be finished, hopefully in time for summer. I still need to make a liot of outdoors stuff as well. I also probably wont have room for a solid gameboard with resin features etc. The vault I will be able to breakdown into individual pieces and put int to the basement for storage etc. As it is I don't have a nice board to play on yet. So yes I am envious of your board and all the nice clutter items and ruins that give it a great fallout feel.

Well, played out the first big version of the Fallout Skirmish rules, and they worked pretty well. I didn't get any good photos of the thing - too busy trying desperately to ride herd on the cats playing, but I am waiting for one of the gentleman playing to send me all of the photos he took, and I'll post those.

Had 6 different factions playing, each with a primary and a secondary goal, and it went pretty well. The Vault Dwellers did the best, escorting the merchant off the board while rescuing 7 poor captives who were due to become supermutants.

Of course, I am already looking at parts of the rules I am not as fond of, and adding clauses and rewrites. Sorry Malebolgia -- no ruleset shall ever escape my wrath. I'll send you what I think may be good as a change, and see what you think.

Will work on the group lists today, so hopefully a new version today or tomorrow.

I actually got 3 of this model from my godchildren, who decided Hulk wasn't cool anymore, and they had a bunch of these from their Happy Meals, as well as the smaller one who throws dumpsters. I, of course, used the dumpsters as well for Fallout terrain - they are the orange ones that pop up in my terrain shots.

It sure is an inspiration. despite the amounts of metal still in need of paint, I'm finding it hard to control the urge to make something similar.  o_o
I too ordered 16 Marx cars on ebay some month ago. Unfortunatly they didn't show up yet.  :?

I did find 2 BMW Iszetta's in a toy store though at 1/43 (€5/piece) from the brand cararama.
you can find it on their site : www.hongwell.com
products => 1/43 => 251
also have a look at 148. features a nice caravan for powder gangers  :)

Majorsmith - thanks, I think they are fun, and they are going to be my encounter chips - will they be loot, or a Deathclaw?

And here is our latest group - a Raider named Mad Dog, and his herd of hounds...

I couldn't figure out why they came out shiny, and then I realized I had used my satin spray, not the matte. Oh well - that can be fixed.

Onward to more townsfolk and few mercs!

You didn't think I had stopped working on this project, I hope?

We present, General Atomics Robobrain!

He was made up of some old jewelry, a tube, and spare treads off some lead tank I had...

And for the well armored Vault Dwellers, we have something a bit more durable than mere security armor. This is to represent a group of Vault Dwellers who had access to a bit more in the way of materials. We call it combat armor with radiation suit qualities - but some of you will probably call it first generation Rogue Trader Eldar Pirates.

And I felt I needed some pools of gunk, and maybe a bit of water. I used a textured vinyl laminate on plasticard to give me a backing, and than spread inks on the surface. I worked very well, actually.

Congratulations to Sinewgrab on his presentation of the Fallout game at the NHMGS Enfilade game convention at Olympia, Washington, a week and a half ago on May 28.  He ran the game for seven players, and it got a very favorable response.  A lot of people who didn't play in the game gave positive comments on how good the game looked.

IT'S ALIVE!!!!

Yeah, I'm back, to start the new year with some more Fallout stuff.  I move to other projects and inevitably circle back to this.  Maybe I should just start selling everything not Fallout...nah.

While stuck at home for New Year's Eve as my wife went to a party (she really wanted to go, and I can't stand some of the people that I knew she would be hanging out with, so I stayed home rather than be the wet blanket) I finished up a herd of Brahmin.  Found some great little o-scale cattle to use - soft plastic, so a little green stuff and they were ready for paint.

And a scale photo...

And I also decided to scratchbuild a picnic table - how goofy is that? Sorry for the quality of the photo.

And a response to Demi Morgana - sorry I didn't see that you had asked a question - better late than never, eh? With new table just behind them too.

frustrating because here in Europe it's impossible to find O-scale train supplies.

I've been looking at some US webstores, but the P&P is a dealbreaker.  :'(

Thanks for those links,

but £16 for 3 cow models... that's rather expensive. I think I'll pass.

The bag I picked up off this ebay seller was Herefords rather than Holsteins, but here's where I found them here in the US.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ertl-1-64-Holstein-Cattle-Cows-Calves-Bag-25-new-/200687684240?pt=Diecast_Vehicles&hash=item2eb9eb0a90

I have to say though, as I have found to my chagrin (losing my pants on a few trades) that the shipping to England from the US is ridiculously expensive.  You'd think they were on an island or something...oh, right.

So how did you make the Brahmin?

Cut off both heads and center them up? or does just adding an extra head on the side work?

All of them are looking partially to one side, so just attaching the heads to the side worked fine.

And I am just a busy busy little boy this week.  I think I feel inspired.

This piece of terrain was spawned by a find in a Goodwill store - I knew I had to do something with it. It's an ancient Tonka motor home I bought for a buck.  It is a bit large, but who cares? It came out cool, and cool overrules scale every time for me.

And hey!  Who is that in there?

Yes, I finally finished them off, so here are the Hasslefree marines done in Reilly's Ranger style.  I have a few others to add in, but they are not on my hot list right now.  I tried to do the little clover symbols, but I just could not get them to look good, so I painted them over.

And the latest little cottage.  Sometimes I feel like a slacker, especially when looking at things like Elysium's STALKER project, but I am still just more interested in making terrain background, and not have it steal the show from the game mechanics and the models themselves.  Detailed interiors look great but in my experience always lead to issues of spacing and movement inside.

Well, there are not a whole lot of them, but I have a few pictures from a battle today.  A couple of groups of raiders allied with mutants and ghoul mercs to attack a small town and their Ranger allies.

Albino scorpions are mean.

The mini nuke is not a small template.

It is all about saving the kids - who were a random encounter.  They found them hiding in an ant nest.

The gentleman playing the raiders avoided the nuka-cola caps, which trigger random events, and managed to have the worst dice rolls of the game.  I think the gods of chance were telling him something.
Luckily for me, everyone still had fun.

My bad luck played out in spades.
As for the Nuka Cola caps,
I figured my luck was so bad that if one turned up,
I would be toast.
Great fun anyway.

I am currently using a modified version of the Weird Krieg ruleset that Malebolgia built.  I have shifted a few things, but that is the core.  I am going to testing a new set soon for post-apoc stuff, but it isn't truly Fallout, so we'll see how it works.

So, Dust has a set of Quonset huts for a reasonable price, and I find that they paint up well.

How you might ask?  Simple - steal the beads from your wife's collection ;) and then glue a dab of Autumn flock to the top for flowers, and BAM!
Barrel Cactus!

More to come tonight, but I have to go to work now.. (boo! hiss!)

Feck!? Six huts for £16? That's a steal, thanks for posting them.

^^ I use beads all the time on my own terrain, and yet somehow the idea of making cacti out of them never hit me. I think of pumpkins first before those. That's some nice scatter to go along with the rest of your stuff. Eugh, people get ever so messy with their stuff after the apocalypse. Clean up you louts!

Are those 28mm bases on those Geckos? They aren't perfect stand ins, yes, but fluff wise you could just name them something like "Stunted Gecks", not actually related to Geckos as a species, but called so by ignorant wastelanders (like Mirelurks and Kings).

Yep.  They stand just a touch taller than a standard 28mm, which makes them almost perfect scale.

And so I decided to finally start on my next pair of terrain boards - a parking lot and then a HoloCostco.  I have connections in the sign industry, and was able to get a sheet of 2" thick Gatorfoam that was not sellable, so they let me have it.  Think of foamcore, but with a melanine face instead of paper, and a denser foam.

The advantage to this is that it is durable, but can be cut and shaped fairly easily.  I started with this...

I went with my standard 24" x 48" board size, and textured portions of it with Fleckstone spray, along with my patented "Put a Damn CD on it" terrain basing system.  I wanted to have cracked asphalt, and so we took a chisel and a small mallet to it.

And then we proceeded to paint a mix of white glue, black paint, and sand onto the surface of the 'asphalt'. The 'orange' is a RAw Sienna base color I use for everything Fallout.

And now, after much painting and drybrushing, is this.  There will be plenty of room for wrecked cars to hide behind, and all sorts of stuff.  I have to build a fence to put on it, but otherwise, I think I am done. Next, the building.

So, as I work on smaller things, I added some bits and bobs to my stuff before I get a few days off for the holidays and dig into the Holocostco build.

I was given an old plastic Bonsai tree that was broken in a couple places, and with a bit hot glue and pinning wire, we got these out of it.

If you notice a color shift in the ground, it would be because I have started lightening up my Mars terrain from chocolate brown to have more raw sienna in it, and started darkening my Fallout colors from pure raw sienna to have more reds in it, so that I can mix the two more easily visually in preparation for a campaign I may be running for my main gaming group, using FUBAR 5th ed 2 page rules to create armies and battle it out.  We were going to do VSF, but some of the guys can't afford to start a new army right now, and they have 40k armies they can convert easily.

And what better place to fight a war than on post-apocalyptic boards?

We also picked up some models from WarGamma Miniatures, and I was very pleased.  For $20 shipped, I got these two pieces.

The Burrowing Beast - this guy I think I can use for sooo many things.  Post-apoc, Pulp, Fantasy - all of them!

And the crashed satellite.  This piece actually has some triangular fins on it originally, but I did not like them and trimmed them off.  Only flaw in the piece to me. Can also work as an unexploded A-bomb.

And a couple more random terrain pieces with cacti, because it worked.

Those look fantastic i apsolutely love it!!!! Ive gotta get my hands on some terrain for my fallout themed game, i love your CD basing, i may have to steal that, how do you get such a perfert circle without clue/sand creeping into them.

Also, wheres the Cacti from? They would work great for a fallout new vegas setting.

As I said a page earlier, they are beads I stole from my wife painted green with autumn colored flock glued on top.

The perfect circle is from my leaving the CD's on the board with a little 2-sided tape until I get to the painting stage.  Texturing the CD's when I spray just means that they are ready to go when I am working on new stuff.

And, in my own carzy way, I have done a few more cars I got on the cheap at local flea markets for terrain.

I feel pretty good about the weathering on these.  They are a little large at 1/35 scale, but they'll do.

And I found some bits and bobs that I am not entirely sure where they came from, but look good as possible mutant or alien plot points.

And we have a bit more stuff.  Keeps me busy while we endure these 40mph gusts of wind today.  Going to be fun to clean my yard when all this is done.

And what fun is a wasteland without old telephone poles?

Nada Piper

Raz the Ghoul, sniper.

Thanks!  The flannel shirt on Nada was a pain - the character is based on Roddy Piper from 'They Live', then someone thought Raz, a ghoul, was an appropriate name. (Batman reference...) I just finished a commission painting 20+ Armorcast buildings from back in the 90's that the fellow forgot he had until he brought me a plastic box that hadn't seen the light of day for almost 20 years, and asked me to put them together and paint them for him, and now I need to get some stuff I like to paint done.

And the "I have nothing to do since I was laid off" update!  Well, other than searching for a job, but anyway...

And my newest supermutants - both are from a collectible minis game called Dreamblade, with the second guy (that I painted as a nightkin) having Ork hands added, as he normally just has blades.

And a Brother Vinni Robobrain - I just put a dome on, no brain inside.  I just didn't feel that talented this week.

Being as they were Star Wars collectibles, I was unsurprised by the lack of any facial features, and they almost ended up in the below.

New rubbish bins, in the ever so sexy orange.

And I have about 40 or so more figures I am working on that I already had in the works...going to have to run a game here soon.

So, anyone who has gone into Hidden Valley has seen these...

And I have been racking my brain for a good couple of weeks, trying to figure out how to make a minefield based on the way frag mines look in Fallout.  I was talking to my wife this morning when I made a comment (that I no longer remember) that provoked a sudden plunge into my bits box.  You know those goofy little plastic shield bosses GW used to provide in every blister that had shields?

In Fallout New Vegas, when you go in, you find bunker entrances and these fans sticking up out of the ground, that are both the air for the bunkers and a defense system that when they reverse blows the sand around like a storm, causing the locals to think of it as haunted.  I just need to finish the bunker entrances next...

Everyone's favorite Mr. Gutsy...

And more Enclave...yes, I know the officer has a mush face - he is one the not-so-good sculpts from the Star Wars range.  It is why I did not give him a new gun - why put silk stockings on a pig?

And I told myself, "Self, you are not allowed to paint any of Vinni's Power Armor until you paint some of those old figures you collected years ago"...so here we are.

I never realized these guys say 'SWAT' on them until I was drybushing and it showed up.  :?

So, of course, once these were done...

These are some very well made figures.  The Enclave armors don't fit together as well. I got two of these, and the other one is getting a little conversion work, and will get a worn green paint job so that it looks like the T-51b from the Deathclaw Promontory.  I am also working on a set of captives and prisoners from Vinni as well, but I don't know if I will even post them - certainly not here - as they are NSFW, and I am no Michi when it comes to skin tones.

New terrain!

So, I have started a job where I have access to a CNC router and engraver, and I am, in fact, being encouraged to try some of my own projects on it in order to learn its quirks.  I found a big chewed up piece of 1 1/2" thick Gatorfoam ( a sign material of foam with a hard layer of wood pulp on both sides)
and started with a couple of map images of Vault 101, vectored them, moved stuff around to make it fit the piece, added a room here and there, and started routing it.

And because experimentation is the name of the game, I used my brand spanking new airbrush (a gift from an old friend who felt he owed me for years of christmas and birthday gifts I gave him when he could not afford to give me anything - he didn't but he felt that way)

I wanted to give the feel of the pip-boy map, but still make things visible.  I like how it has come out. I also made several vault doors...

I learned that the machine has some limits, but can do wonders if treated right, and using Windex for thinner works well with airbrushing acrylic paints, but air the house out while you work, or you will have the fiercest headache from the fumes.  Especially if you are drinking aquavit at the same time.  The hangover this morning was murderous.

Next step - add toilets and sinks, maybe a tub or two.  I found some that I liked and ordered them, so I'll take care of that when they get here.

Using a massive computer-controlled router to produce scenery - we really are living in the future, and it is awesome.

The airbrush glow around the walls is also inspired.

Nicely done!

This is actually a quite small CNC, honestly.  It can only handle up to 25" x 49" - one of my former workplaces has one that will work on material up to 48" x 120".  Now THAT would be a Vault...

That is amazing. Now do another one of a wrecked vault! ;)

I only have so many scrap pieces around, lad.  Besides, I am starting to have to balance storage versus desire to make terrain.  My assigned portion of the garage is only so large.

I'm very impressed with the airbrushed glow effect well done on that. The whole piece is obviously impressive but computer control can give some fantastic results.

Thanks.  I learned a lot trying to do this - i had blocked in areas of color with a brush, because the colors I wanted to use were so transparent that it would have taken 15 or 20 coats at airbrush thin to get any color, but it also led to a less blended look.  Live and learn.

I also realized afterwards that some of the doors and corridors are so small, that I will not be able to actually place figures in them - I did not think to check all of the room scales in the grid of the program, so I will not be able to put any BIG figures in at all. But hey, everyone is usually their own worst critic, am I right?

What can I say? Fallout is one of my 3 perpetual hobby addictions.

1) Fallout/Post-Apoc
2) VSF/Steampunk
3) Pirates

Those three genres never get old for me.  I am almost at the point that I would add Space Opera, but I have gone on 3-5 year hiatuses from that genre before, even though I am locked into it right now.  I just wish I could get a group together to give Victory Decision a try for platoon level battles...

But anyway, I am fairly pleased with how well the Vault turned out.  I have another much smaller piece of foam at work that I am considering trying to turn into a second 'level' for this vault, as I am planning on turning the little 'loop' at one end into stairs up and down - I just haven't built that yet to put in.  I used enough windex as the thinner for the airbrush and then for the matte sealer that it is still outgassing enough to give me a headache, so I have to take a break while it dries in the garage for a week or so.

Actually...hmm, yes that could be done.  A bit large for a Fallout game proper - I would almost need to be doing a Brotherhood versus Enclave or Legion versus NCR on a table that large.

And with the advent of Fallout 4, we get our mitts back into Fallout terrain.  I found some rather nice little toy boats at a local flea market, and they became useful...

This one broke up when I was waterlining them, so it gets to tilt as a wreck.

And a scale shot for y'all.

And another building, that I may need to post in my VSF thread as well, but it would work in New Vegas...

ALL ABOARD!!!! Muahahahaha!  Ai ai ai!

(Sorry, I'll get my hat.)

Anyway, I am blaming another gentleman on this board for this sudden burst of inspiration - he had a ghoul-led mule train, and I said to myself, "Self, there is no way a wasteland merchant would be caught dead leading mules when there are respectable Brahmin around. So, self, what are we going to do about that?"

Well, this.

Each one has a 'function' - I tried to keep groups of items together at least peripherally, to give them whole train a reason to hang together.

For example, this one is 'tools', with chainsaw, oar, rake, shovel...

Mine are conversions - I purchased these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ERTL-BLACK-ANGUS-COWS-CALFS-NEW-IN-PACK-1-64-SCALE-/221799221537?

And then made a mold of the head, so that I could cast a second head and attach it, using greenstuff to cover the joins.  The first time, I cut half of their heads off, but then I had all these wasted bodies...

Seriously great conversions and cows. Works well as individual traders, whole convoys or a little flavour in a town.

Well, that's how you get to Point Lookout in Fallout 3, and when I was making it, I had a discussion with some gamer friends who pointed out that a lot of boats would survive because of how they are moored away from the major population points, especially on lakes.

And while the two Ghouls are kind of meh, the Captain I was very happy with.

Heh.  Yeah, he is some skull-faced villain from DC or Marvel - I had to shorten the legs, or he would have been ridiculously tall (ah, Heroclix...) and the other Ghoul is Toten-something from Pulp Figures.  I can't remember where the Captain came from - maybe Lead Adventure itself.

It has been a busy weekend - speaking of Point Lookout, here is a big fella that just looked too perfect as a mutant hillbilly...

Hill Giant Chief from Pathfinder Miniatures...with a quick repaint to bring out some colors.

And I now have the Golden Geckos, though they are a bit large.  Good for making people get worried when they show up, I guess.

They are, but I couldn't help it with the hillbilly, and I wanted to use the Monsterpocalypse figures somehow.  I am only repainting the 'clear' special character ones - any others I am simply doing my special Fallout Shade wash on (I use it on all of the figures at some stage - it helps tie them all together, and it took me a year or two to get to the ratio I wanted (10 drops raw umber ink, 5 drops burnt sienna, 3 drops yellow ochre, 2 drops black, to 40 drops Magic Wash) and using them straight up. I just call them super-Geckos, and move on until someone gives me a better model option.

And no, I am not making Tarna, or Den, or even the dude with a rotary saw for a hand.  Wrong kind of post-apoc for me.

Fun movie, though.

And so, with a paid day off and heat too high for us here in the Northwest of the US (it should be mid-80's, and we just extended our record period of days above 90 degrees by yet another day - bleh) I decided to jump on the diner bandwagon, and get it finished.  Now, I don't know about all of you, but I found a way to sneak a live mine into Moriarty's pocket in every playthrough, just to help out Gob.  He didn't deserve Moriarty's abuse, dammit.

So, I decided that he might get away somehow, and become a cook with a diner in, I dunno, Andale?  Offer some new options?  Or maybe reopen the one in Greyditch.

Living room - like this:

Although one of the HAM radios would be good as well.

I am working on something like that, actually.  As well as an impromptu merchants' tent, so that wandering merchants can set up as they come through for a day or so.  You know, rather than stand there looking pretty until you walk up to them.

Well, if nothing else, the heat that keeps me from going out and doing yardwork is giving me plenty of time to make and paint stuff.

Welcome to the market!

First, I built some stalls from sprue and popsicle sticks.

And I dragged out an unfinished Built-Up Area for DBA that was lost when we quit the campaign, and with a little more work...

And then outfitted the stalls.

And put them all together.

And then slapped a bit of paint on it.

The stalls can be pulled out - I did not glue them in so that I can use them separately from the compound.

Wowzers, thats a cracking little set.

The junk on the tables, the speed of finishing the terrain, the rubbish and tires... FANTASTIC!  8)  8)

The little fence wont keep out the deathclaws though.. but perhaps it will keep the baby dragons in. Looks like the deathclaws have a new park for their babies to feed in. :D

Yard work can wait any day that it is 80 degrees F before 10am. Blech. We have now had more 90 degree plus days already than we normally have in an entire summer - and they have been in a row. Oh, and we are having the driest 3 month stretch on record.

But yeah, a day's work - and I see the poky fence as more of a shoplifting barrier, and brahmin pen.  I placed the tires, barrels and sandbags where they would provide instant cover in case of a raider assault. I also built some other pieces up, but they can wait for paint to take pictures of.

I drilled through them, so that the bamboo skewers would just slide in, and I could level it out.

Well at least your getting stuff done. I set every thing out to get started and then lose motivation. Need to just get stuff done.

Just pick up the brush and go.  I find that playing the Fallout playlist I made helps immensely, as does playing FO3 or FONV for an hour or so before getting started.

So, I continue doing more bits and bobs for my terrain collection.

The GW fancy walls set works remarkably well for an Enclave enclosure.

And another CD piece - an OLD Armorcast ruined building.  I have been trying to make corner pieces that look like the area may be occupied by scavengers, or as a war zone, so you are stashing things where you can for shelter.

And I found an unused GW wall from the 3rd ed set - still some of the better little pieces they ever produced in my opinion.

And an alien plant from Armorcast, that was soooo old its resin had turned a deep mustard yellow...I actually have two pieces together, with some rocks to break it up a bit.

Nothing spectacular, but I just keep plugging along.  The tendonitis in my elbow makes these things a lot more difficult than it should - can't paint with shooting pains and numb fingers.   :?

Yeah, it can be.  The physical therapists couldn't do anything, and I have not been able to get in to see the specialist my doc recommended. Years of repetitive labor preceded by years of swinging a sword has taken its toll.  Puts a crimp in my favorite hobby at times.

But nevermind, look at the pretty terrain pieces!   :D

And, so, we continue with terrain that is probably older than a third of the posters on LAF...

Old Armorcast Venus Mantrap...

And Friday's postman brought me an early Christmas present.  I thought that the windmill was going to be a kit, and I was wrong.  It comes completely assembled, with no loose parts.  Love that!

And it was just not wasteland ready, so...

And I could hardly have it sitting there not being painted, could I?

I added a few bits - radio, lamp, can of fuel, barrel of whoknowswhat, just too keep it visually interesting.

And now, back to the Grymn, a few survivors, and other projects as well...

Nah - they are recasts of the desk from the old heroclix indoor adventure set - I made a quick mold of that one so I could get more when I found that Ebay wanted an average of $40 bucks for the set.  That would be an old computer bank, a bookshelf, a desk, and a coke machine...for $40 dollars.

So I recast the soda machines and the desks for my use, because, well, reasons.

Doh! pretty sure I've that heroclix set lying around somewhere.

Wow, that windmill is looking really nice!  8)  Are the desks on those of those corner ruins scratchbuilt?

Oh, and thanks on the windmill.  I am happy with it.  I might mount it to a base and add a generator, but I am not sure I want it tied to post apoc that thoroughly.  As it stands, I could add it to a VSF settlement as well - the radio and gas can would be anachronistic, but not stand out as much as a big power generator.

And few more figures I just finished last night...

A new Vault Dweller...

And a figure I decided to use for that most irritating and outright bloody horrifying of Broken Steel baddies, the Ghoul Reaver.  I have no idea what this is, but he was in my figures bin.

And a generator to use with my windmill, or anywhere else for that matter.

Yeah, once I threw the shoulder pads and plates on him, I felt he gave the appropriate feel of "RUN!"

I *hate* that add-on.  Is any creature more trouble for the gift of, oh, a harmonica or 2 bottle caps?

No idea - I've never seen an Ertl one.  This is about 10" tall, though.

As was said above, it is from Pulp Alley Miniatures/Statuesque.  She seemed Vault-y to me.

Great stuff!

I sculpted it.  Both the refrigerator and the oven you see in all my Fallout terrain are casts of sculpts I did (with some moderate success) because I could not find anything even close that was already available.  I also sculpted the cash registers I use.  If you want some, PM me.  I could cast them for reasonable costs.

Well, because of the orchards you can build in Fallout 4, I made a couple of small pieces.

I recently came into a large set of old, beat to hell trees from a local game store that closed, that were an odd scale, and thought I would try to make them into small CD based orchards for interesting terrain.

I believe they are actually meant for Infinity games, but so what?

CDs are fantastic as bases - it is nigh impossible to make them warp (although I've seen it done with a ton of paper-mache).

Sooooo, about 4 months ago I found  a seller on Ebay who was doing 3D printed post-apocalyptic terrain and I was unsuccessful in getting any of them, even though they were inevitably going for just over the asked for minimum bid.  He put out a new set that was essentially a "town square" set, and I thought it looked okay in the photos, so I bid, and $45 later (with free shipping) I received a 10 complete piece set that I was mildly disappointed in.  Granted, at $5 a 'stall', it isn't bad.  This is them with a black undercoat and misting of white primer to give a better idea of how the detailing was going to look.  There is a fishmonger, blacksmith, weapons dealer, potter, fruit seller, gallows, stocks, well, apothecary's wagon, fortune teller, and a toolshop.

He didn't spend much time on clean up, and the in person detail was less than appealing.  For the cost, I am not sore, but I would have hoped for a bit more detail, and less strands.  The 3D printes can probably tell me what he was doing, but I don't know, so...

This is compared to a set of Tabletop World pieces I bought at the same time - I had a commission check burning in my bank account.

So, while I thought about it, I painted up a bunch of jersey barriers I gotten in another auction.  I am 90% certain they were recasts, but they part of a job lot that someone was just trying to ditch.

And now on to the rest of it.

So, each of those stalls had a roof, that I agonized over, because they all looked the same.  This one has a signboard attached, and I wasn't real happy about the look.

So I painted another Cape Cod cottage.

From here on out, all pictures will have a Leia figure for scale.  For obvious reasons.  Damned 2016 - not enough to take my Prince, and my Goblin King, but now my Princess as well?

So, after much thought, I went crazy.  Did green stuff casts of some of the Tabletop pieces for fruit and fish, dremeled out the not-so-great details, because the stalls themselves looked fine, and POOF! Magic happened.

The Gallows is still a touch short, but (shrug).

The stocks are a touch large, on the other hand, but I left it removable, because I do have a few 'witch' and slave figures in stocks or on posts that I can set up there.

The apothecary's cart became an Aqua Cura cart...

Here is a dumpster and stack of crates I also threw in - was with the joblot with the barriers.

And just to draw out the suspense, I painted those Tabletop World pieces.  These I was overjoyed with.  Detailed, clean casts, beautiful stuff.

The well...

And the final, everything but the house and barriers group shot.  That's how I spend a Christmas weekend when my wife tells me there is no 'honey-do' list because it is Christmas, and I helped get everything together for the family dinner without being asked to...after 20+ years, I figured out how to game the system.  :D

All in all, I was mildly disappointed in the product, but I think my end version works well.  The cloth covers 'cover' up a lot of ills on the roofs, and once I added beads, castings of fish and other stuff, I won't be embarrassed to put this on the table.  I am considering using all of this with my Holocostco to make a trading hub for a Pulp Alley game   Should look really good.

So, a few things I finished up while I was waiting eagerly for the legal start to the Build Something contest...

First, a "scrap heap" model from armorcast, with a few added bobs.  I got it used, and I am pretty sure that there are pieces broekn off or filled in with sand on here, but what the hell...so I added a poorly cast motorcycle, and lots of rust pigment powder.

So, my wife was at Michael's Crafts, and she sent me a photo of a trailer she saw, that she thought might work for terrain (best wife ever).  So, out of curiosity, I wandered down there with a figure in my pocket, and found this.  Ran about $13, has a light in it (which I promptly removed for another project) and I suspect I may get a few more with the ubiquitous 40% off coupons Michael's hands out.

So, for the first one, all I did was use my standard weathering/shading wash for Fallout stuff, and it looks like this.

I could weather it a bit more, easily enough, or repaint it, but for a simple almost ready piece, it is worth the money.  It is part of their new line of stuff meant for indoor 'faerie gardens' and such.  I found it across from the flower section.

This isn't really a post-apo kind of vehicle, but since I can't seem to find a Vertibird model, or make one that I don't smash in frustration, I picked up a "Planes" heli that was on sale for $10 bones at a local store, and gave it a quick repaint.

It is just a touch small, but I think it works well enough as a plot point or such.  Especially if I decide on some zombie action at some point.

Neat stuff all around!  Your pictures as a guide the 3D prints didn't look too bad.  They definitely looked as though they were intended for a fantasy setting rather than the PA repurpose you pulled off.  Nice result;  I think they will grow on you.

I hope so - I think I need to do a big ass trading post game soon, with all of my various 'shops' and 'carts'.

And my latest build - I guess I am too into the settlement system in FO4, cause now I am building things I do there as a regular occurrence.

Who doesn't love orchards?

So, I used some HO scale fruit trees, and then some "grass" off a mat I found in the bargain bin at Michael's.  I tend to plant a lot of razorgrain as well as mutfruit, for its use as brahmin bait.  I have a few left, and may just create another smaller orchard as well.  I wanted to make it look like the settlers were watering the trees regularly, so I added ink to darken those areas.

I will say that I am not embarrassed to put a game on it.

And my latest addition - I found a cheezy little motorcycle in the $1 section of the local mart, and found that the orc legs I had in my bitz box worked great, and then the body, and a crypt ghoul head, and now I have Fratelli, the traveling Ghoul tinker, on his prized touring bike.

I like him, cool concept and seems to go together with the bike quite well.

Now, I will admit, I use the ad-hoc wear what you can find attitude of the post-apoc world as an excuse to paint all kinds of figures, base them the same, and multipurpose the hell out of them.  These guys can go into BoB, post-apoc, Pulp, WWW2...Mostly Pulp Figures, but I have no idea where I got the Captain from.

And thus, the crew of the Carp, my riverboat.

The Captain

His wife and first mate

So, recently I combined an order with a pal of mine, for whom I paint terrain in exchange for monetary compensation, for a lot of Sarissa Precision buildings.  I owe him about 8 hours of painting at the moment, as between Bolt Action and Fallout, I have a need of ruined bombed out buildings.

But first, I did a couple of their North American cabins.

I learned some major things here - one, these are REALLY easy to build. I built the 13 houses I had ordered in less than an afternoon.  Well planned by Sarissa.

I also had to modify my usual painting style to use for these.  The detail is not as deep as plasticville or gw plastics, so you have to modify your drybrushing and washes to work.

And most irritatingly, there is nothing that is helpful on the net (that I could find) that tells me what colors might have been used on homes like this in the trun of the century.  I wanted to paint them in such a way that they could be used for VSF, Western, Pulp, WW2, or Fallout.  Is there anything on what colors might be used in America at the turn of the century?  F*** no.  You're on your own, maggots.

Grumble.

The choice of colors varies widely from one area of the country to another. In some areas the still painted building in the kind of bright colors used in the Victorian period, others were more into a more modern & subdued. In some areas anything other than a good whitewash was thought to be over the top.

Sinewgrab, I've got good results with mdf buildings by scoring and carving the boards with a modelling knife in order to get a more textured effect - time consuming but nice.

This picture is of a historically-accurate 1:43 diorama of Nenana Town, Alaska, at the mid 20s; as you can see, most sand coloured and light woods colours on the buildings:

So, I have been taking my 40% off coupons to the local Michael's, and that has allowed me to get a few more trailers.  Thye nromally run $13, but I feel that is a bit steep. $8 though - I can live with that...

So, this started happening...

But I got distracted, and went away from this project for a few days (painting GIs for a WW2 game, actually, but I came back to it.  Unfortunately, I completely forgot to take any more progress photos...

I got them in an Ebay buy that I kind of regretted when it came in, because I am 90% certain that all of the stuff was recasts - all of it was the same grey resin, fair amount of bubbles, etc. It was a large lot buy of primered pieces that are from, as far as I can tell, at least three companies.  Armorcast, Ainsty, Pardulon, and some I could not ID.  I found them later, but I don't remember exactly where the chair and sofa came from.

I may have recast some things I have gotten over the years for large projects and personal use as it was more affordable in the long run versus paying shipping costs, but selling them on Ebay doesn't sit well with me.

And, so, I needed a small hangar for another project, and since that would be a cool place to have for various reasons, I built one.  I felt the Plasticville/Bachman ones were too small, and didn't feel like they were large enough...

I am definitively planning on building an interior later, but for now I just have the outer shell done.

Post by: Sinewgrab on September 06, 2017, 12:53:38 AM
Holy cow! I haven't posted anything post-apo for this long?

Well, these little beauties will also be used for crossover with Bolt Action, just like all of my Sarissa buildings.  Destroyed European buildings look a little bit like Boston...curious that.

So, what I was frustrated with was interiors.  Who doesn't love an interior, but gets frustrated with the fact that it is the same damned one every time, and that might keep you from say, transplanting that building into another game? So, my solution was - make little add-ins, you can pull and change.  I made a bunch of irregular shape baes, and started adding stuff. Some of these have a little paint on them already.

And here some of them are all painted up in the new habitat.

And here is a lot of finished ones stacked up.

Considering how often I have "borrowed" ideas from LAF, I feel honored that so many of you feel that way.

And I am planning on using that model in any fashion I can devise for the entire year, for, well, reasons.

She led my Bolt Action Partisans the other day - who I have started painting overwhelmingly in the blue, dark blue and tan color scheme from the first film...

That's a clever idea, and an excellent execution to boot.

Yep.  I had a Mata Hari model as a 2nd Lt, and Leia as Captain.  I kept snickering the whole game.

Wow,  I had no idea I hadn't posted in this long.

Well, a couple of new items here...

A lasercut building - 3mm material, rather than the 2mm Sarissa uses.  Bit beefier, new company here in the States called Lasercraft (I think) - local game store gets his stuff.

Nothing special, but worth getting.  He needs to work on his price point though - I pointed out that it is about 15% higher price than Sarissa or TT Combat for a similar size building, so he will lose out as soon as someone gets to the level of free shipping online.

And a sorta crosspost here - an Ainsty river launch.  Love this model.

So, the last week has been pretty busy. I am getting ready for a convention in May (Enfilade!) and am running three games of Pulp Alley as a serial all day Saturday.  These are figures I am planning on using.

Mr Handy - I used a gear for the saw blade, and an old 40K hand flamer.

I also added a flame to him, and a Mr Gutsy I had painted earlier.  It is a torch flame from either Lego or MegaBloks - not sure which, but I have a bunch of them, and they work really well to cover up the post holding the figure up.

I also have a new Vault Dweller - Reaper figure, I think.

A mechanical genius I refer to as the Tin Man...I tried for a color that reminded me of the mechanic jumpsuit in FO4.

A wasteland Doctor who will make the pain go away one way or another...

A new doggy...

A Brotherhood sniper - added a Tau rifle to a Vinni sculpt.

Some new captives of the Raiders/Slavers

A working mechanic...

And finally, a young lady with a scoped rifle...

Stunning paint and very cool miniatures. If I wasn’t here studying all of everyone’s master works I might get some of my lead pile painted.... ha!

Stunning seems a bit strong - I am no Capt Blood, Benbow, or Michi, but I am not disappointed in how they came.

No matter what else I have going though, all roads lead back to Post-apoc or Pirates somehow.  :)

And you shouldn´t be disappointed indeed! They are very well painted - you shaded them and even did eyes and all. Nothing to hide at all! I admit that I have three of your latest too...  ;)

Seeing those BV figures makes me regret not ordering from his nuclear sandlot range before the hammer dropped.  The vibrant blues of the reaper vault dweller came out fantastic.

I am waiting for my final order to come in - the BoS with a super sledge had my name all over it.

And the last models I needed to finish for my Enfilade Fallout Alley game finally came from BV (4 months! Gahh!), so I have been a-painting.

A quick piece I got from a random Ebay seller (who I suspect makes these himself).

The last few buildings I needed to polish up - TT Combat.  I use them for Batman, Bolt Action, Fallout, and Pulp Alley.

And those last figures.

I always make floating gunbots in FO4, so I wanted to convert one.  I should have cast the body since BV isn't making them anymore, but oh well.

Well, if they do come to a show near you, when they visited Impact recently they had a miscast box of parts at 1 euro per part. Could be useful?

I just read through your whole thread and it might be just what I need to motivate me to get back to painting and modeling.

Thanks for the great work.....I can feel my 15mm PA and Scifi calling.
