I picked up a copy of this book yesterday and it's a good intro to the period for the English speaking community. There isn't much on the subject out there and if you're really interested I recommend it.
Portugal: The Scramble for Africa
Paul Southern
Paperback: 256 pages
Publisher: Galago Publishing Ltd (1 Dec 2010)

Many thanks Kingscarbine...Portuguese in Africa it's another colonial theater that fascinate me. i read all the articles and suggestions you posted on the web from years. another source, but too much aimed at modellers for Portuguese Army is the Viriado side. For what i understood it should be an interesting and varied period to game and portray armies also using already existing casting from other wargame armies that we could alreday have. For ex. my intention is to field, playing with TSATF , a generic kaki uniformes Foundry Askari unit, a unit of true white portuguese infantry by Eureka Miniatures with support of mounted Boers and maybe a MG plus some wagons..to face my mixed Zulu/Darkest Africa natives with a good proportion of fire arms.
i have those nice minis from Eureka and i'm looking for some few second hand others to complete my unit

Please Kingscarbine may i ask you , as they represent late period uniform, if they should be painted all in kaki (yellownish), all in off white or, like the pict, with blue tunic and kaki trousers?..also i'm not very convinced of the blanket carried across the body

Hi,
From 1900 use khaki/dark yellow uniforms. Some soldiers used the greatcoat rolled over the shoulder. by the end of a campaign they looked as most soldiers do after a long time in the field.

Thanks...so the Eureka minis depicts soldiers in kaki both for the tunic and trousers! Which colour the overcoat rolled across the body?

Well my book came today and with the couple of Foundry books I have I should have a little bit of info on Portugal in Africa from the 1880's until the end of WWI.I will finish my book on Tippu Tip then start on these. :D Now I need a good book in English on the Aceh War in the Dutch East Indies. Also I would like to get some Portuguese figures 1890's or early 20th century. ;D

One question to Nuno. The book "Mozambique 1895" seems to be available ( a little high at 25 euros) but even though I can't read Portuguese is there a lot of photos in the book?
