Title: John Carter
Post by: Parriah on September 14, 2011, 03:23:07 PM
Does any one know of some good rules for the ERB Barsoom milieu?
I have considered using AD&D 2nd ed, minus magic $ cetera.
But, are there any extant rules? Excepting the SPI 1979 game.

There's a fan-made PDF of a Barsoom supplement for D&D at http://www.grey-elf.com/dnd/barsoom.pdf

You'll need the original D&D rules or some close variant thereof though.

Rattrap's Fantastic Worlds is pretty much tailor-made for Barsoomian adventure on the small skirmish/RPG level...

I got the original 1979 D&D rules, and the 1981 AD&D DM Guide and Player's Handbook, those do?

Savage worlds is a setting-agnostic RPG system - my RPG of choice, actually.  Generally you need the core rules and the setting book you're using, though they do have "Showdown", which is the combat engine stripped of all that pesky roleplaying stuff and pared down to be a good skirmish game.  Showdown is a free download on their site.

Here is a link to Rattrap's Fantastic Worlds:

http://rattrapproductions.com/store/index.php?main_page=page_4

Note that the .45 Adventures family of rules uses d10 with various +/- to the roll for different character attributes. Savage Worlds uses very similar character attributes, but instead of +/- it uses different die sizes, d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, much the way the die sizes are used in D&D. I've noticed that it seems very easy to translate character attributes betweeen the two systems. So it's not a bad idea to by both and mine them both for ideas.

I use GASLIGHT.  In fact at Historicon 2012, we'll be running a 20-player Mars game using GASLIGHT.  For green Martians, I'm using the swamp mutants from Bronze Age Miniatures.

Funny, I don't recall the airship battles. Will have to dig them out again.

In true original D&D style, I wrote a supplement to that supplement here:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/38636721/Adventures-on-Mars

Note, however, that mine is only about 60% Barsoom, the rest is made from other period or near-period authors who did anything with Mars, including H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, C.S. Lewis, Robert A. Heinlein and H.G. Wells.

For small skirmish style games (might work for larger) I am thinking of tweaking Matakishi's Conan rules. Just add a dice bonus for the shooting, and perhaps a couple of dice extra on movement and close combat for John Carter and I think it would work.
