Title: Mechanizing the Martian Hinterlands (Finished Aeronef page 5, Dec 22 2011)
Post by: Froggy the Great on November 17, 2011, 04:15:08 PM
First off, I cannot praise Dr Mathias and his thread here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=33379.0) highly enough.  I am in his debt for the inspiration and help.

(Jump to the finished pics of the trucks and small flyers here, if you want to skip the blow-by-blow) (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=35077.msg415329#msg415329)

(Jump to the finished pics of the large Aeronef here, if you want to skip everything else) (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=35077.msg424195#msg424195)

Starting with wedding favors, purchasable here (though I'm sure better deals exist somewhere - I found cheaper models, but then the shipping was punitive on the level of the RIAA and MP3s):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-Cinderella-Coach-Wedding-carriage-Plastic-clear-/140418334303?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20b195be5f

Tools used so far:
-xacto knife
-pin vise
-hacksaw
-razor saw
-wire cutters
-superglue
-keychain-sized level
-cutting mat
-small children

Here are two WIPs of my steamwagons, copying Dr. Mathias's models enough to be copies, but changed enough make them my own.  They're to the point of needing final cleanup and then a marathon rivet-session with 2-part epoxy and a toothpick:

And since I bought a 12-pack and still have 8 of these suckers to use, I started playing around:

In GASLIGHT terms, this'd be fairly hard-hitting, fairly slow, and as it works on the electrical excitation of the luminiferous aether, its Start and Sustain rolls would be pretty difficult to make.

Now I'm pondering whether I need to make another one, and what to do with the other 7 coaches I have.

I like that.  You turned something way too futuristic into something quite obviously VSF.  Nice.

And as it happens, I have indeed added many rivets, but the image doesn't show them well.

The aircraft is pretty interesting. The new wheel configuration makes it appear to be a VSF version of an anime dual rotor helicopter from Ghost in the Shell, or maybe the Scorpion from Avatar. I'll be curious to see it painted up, along with the sweet rides.

Whoa, I'm just the cheerleader; Matt's the genius.  lol

I'm still 'visualizing' what I'll do with my coaches; you've already surpassed my imagination, much less whatever I may eventually realize.

If I'm not mistaken, Froggy, I've already added you to my list of folks to hate for embarrassing me by their competence. ;->=

'Walk with pride, man!'

Instead of painting, I decided making another flyer would be more fun.  I took a pre-priming pre-riveting WIP of the new model, in case anyone wanted to see the parts used:

Two? I suddenly want Capt's Morpheus and Niobe at the helms.  lol

I kid you not, one of my coaches had a rear wheel at almost that bad an angle...

What ARE those fins from? Star Wars?

Doug
Title: Re: Mechanizing the Martian Hinterlands
Post by: Froggy the Great on November 18, 2011, 07:41:24 PM
Most of the styrene parts are actually ripped from a bunch of the Rocketmen CMG from a couple years ago.  Those fins are either the small flying bases or the fusilages of one of the smaller fighter type figures.

Painting, I think, will be along the same lines as the uniforms of my existing Hinterland figures - Olive with blue shading, white and gold trim, with some pink somewhere.

I haven't decided on the flags yet, since these are supposed to be either High Atlantean, Martian, or whatever they get retconned into next.  Certainly not German or Prussian, but I don't want to rule that out either...

The flags, by the way, are various Rocketmen flight stands.

Thanks, Froggy!

Should have known; I've a number of Rocketmen packs waiting another attempt at War Rocket. Some of the ships are quite good proxies.

Needless to say, inspiring to see you keeping the ladies so well equipped. I'm certainly anticipating the painting.

I've been drawing up a dig gondola with the coach inverted; I'm really coming around to the idea, especially as I'm thinking the driver's seat can become the dig's 'flying' bridge. Your work continues to inspire me!

Keep pushing!

Thanks!  I've since put a blue-black wash over the green that brings it more in line with the figures I'm trying to match.  From there, I'm going to probably do a lighter green drybrush and then the metallic trim.

More progress.

Up next is figuring out where I can get white, rose, and blue onto it to match my Hinterlanders.  I then need to finish the brass/bronze or whatever it's going to be, add some brushed steel, and figure out the flags.  I want to also do some sort of glowy effect on the flyers' blades.

Feedback and suggestions are welcomed.

Anyone have suggestions on what vehicles to make with the other 6 coaches I still have left?

Really working out to be a group; the inverted coaches don't simply LOOK like inverted coaches next to the steam carriages.

'...where I can get white, rose, and blue onto it to match my Hinterlanders.'

Have you considered painting up the detail on the sides of the coaches? Blue foliage, white or red flowers, vice versa on the 'dots'. Also, I think the tops of the 'nefs could stand a painted banner/insignia, with a German motto.

And some cherubs. I think the Hinterlander truppen would like cherubs...

I ended up getting the blue on the flyers on the wing struts, but decided the cars were ok as-is.

The banners I painted with an emblem I made up, but could swear I've seen before - a black background with a white capital I, bisected by a horizontal line.  Does that seen familiar to anyone?

I'd post pics, but I've got holiday stuff in the way for a few days.

Not for me; it's not like GW hasn't 're-visioned' everything they've ever done from something else.  lol

And, if you worry about being tainted by the connection, remember they HAVE used just about everything else as a source. You'll have nothing left!

This is true, yes.  I did look up the Inquisitor symbols and they're not what i'm using, so I'm good.  I still might add some colour patches to the emblem, but that'll have to wait till Monday or so.

Yeah, my plan right now is to eventually paint up 2-4 little forces for VSF, Back of Beyond, or an alternate history type thing that I wouldn't mind just painting the figs for the fun of anyway.  Then set up a skirmish game with a few friends, and see how the natives react.

Although I enjoy Games Workshop stuff myself, most everyone I know gaming-wise don't stray very far from their games or others that have some sort of tournament scene associated with them.

Either way, I'll find an excuse to paint up some Hinterland stuff.   ;)

Thanks,
Jason

Post by: Froggy the Great on December 17, 2011, 06:35:28 PM
They really are, yeah.

The biggest challenge here, having made four previous "classic" aeronefs, is to keep the same aesthetic as the smaller flyers earlier in the thread, while providing for a deck-space from which to fight.

I know that my Hinterlanders use flight by means of electrically charged unobtanium (as opposed to the British and Confederates, who shared passive unobtanium lift technology) - this means that the Hinterland craft are more agile, but less reliable - and that lift is by the carriage wheels painted up to look glowy, and attached to the craft sides.  How to do that while avoiding the appearance of badly-attached wheels is proving to be an interesting conceptual challenge.

I do know that it will have at least three small propellers, as opposed to the single large prop the other 'nefs I've made have used (translation - I ran out of that part).

Bottom:  Soldiers from Capitana Nema conduct a surprise retreat from the Hinterland shipyard following the accidental overturning of the as-yet unnamed vessel.

I've got the cabin mostly done, and the tail interior figured out - I'll be adding a shielded driveshaft from the cabin to the tail gear.

I think I've found the parts I'll use for the tail fins, but everything I use for struts cause the whole vehicle to look really stubby and blunt, not agile and fishlike.
