I have been thinking of beefing up Heroquest into a light rpg. I'm thinking of still using the heroquest combat system. I am having trouble with character leveling though. Should I go by gold, or maybe enemies killed? Would you had any stats? Any ideas? Has anyone else ever done this?
-
I would take a look at Warhammer Quest if levelling up if you're after a light RPG.
It is a little pricey to get a complete copy, but you can use all the Heroquest stuff (miniatures, floor tiles etc.) if you grab a copy of the rulebook and roleplaying book.
Very easy to play and there is a lot of stuff in the RP book to keep you going for months.

Hard to believe the rulebook isn't available as a free pdf from GW. You'd think that even if they lost money on the book, they'd make money in the long run. I know I'd buy a lot more GW figures if I had those rules in my grubby little hands.
-
Not sure if they are allowed, it was a joint project with MB games afterall. That aside, if they were to redo any dungeon crawler I'd imagine it would be Warhammer Quest.

I did something similar a while ago, the intention was to give the game some longevity for my (non-existent) children. I used gold as a measure of advancement, with every 1000 gold allowing a character to 'level up' wherein they gained a racial or class based ability or stat increase (elves get better at archery, barbarians become stronger and learn to rage etc.). They didn't have to spend the gold to level up, just earn it. They could spend it on whatever they wanted in town (I added a travel to town and buy stuff post-game sequence like in WHQ).
I also increased the range of character types and enemies, as well as adding a random mission generator. This is a remake of one of the fire magic cards from the original game. I used MTG art for the illustrations and expanded the magic from 4 types to 24 types.

I'm not claiming to be an expert on such things but feel free to PM me if you have any questions or ideas you want to discuss for your efforts.

Some food for thought. Will look into try to track down a WHQ rulebook.
Lawful was also kind of thinking the same thing with gold. Thanks for the comments so far.

I'd suggest you just use Advanced HeroQuest. The rulebook even included stats for all the HQ monsters and heroes and a short section on how to convert the HQ campaign to AHQ. Combat gets a lot more deadly, but that's a big plus in my opinion.

There is also the character building and post-battle experience stuff from Mordheim, which might give you a few ideas. I have never played WHQ etc, but from what's been said here it sounds like they have a lot on common - but the Mordheim rulebook is available as a free download from GW's specialist games section.
Mordheim has a simple tick-box system for gaining experience. Survive missions/scenarios, fullfill objectives etc and win so much experience, once you have so many points you get to choose a new skill.
Might make it a bit more fun than simply collecting all the gold. ???
-
You can also spent alittle time searching for the WHQ rules online.
I downloaded the whole stuff a few years ago, but don't remember where.
Rulebook, Game/Roleplaybook, Cards, Tiles etc ;)

There are rumors about GW re-releasing Mordheim, and apparently they have already RETIRED all Mordheim downloads from their website.
I checked England, USA and Spain, and no more Mordheim resources.
If anyone knows better, please share your information.
As for HEROQUEST, I would recommend joining one or more of the existing forums:
The Alchemist Bench

Old Scratch
http://oldscratch.smackwell.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi
HeroQuest by Phoenix

Etc.
There ara LOTS of new fanmade rules, additions, campaing systems, magic spells, magic objects, armory, etc.
Hope that helps.

Well bugger me, you're right. :( Hmmm. If they do relaunch it, I wonder if there'll be an updated box set. Interesting.
-
But it's not just the Mordheim-stuff, also the Necromunda, Inquisitor etc, or not?
Or I just don't find it ::)
-
No, it looks like its all gone! Only rulebooks I could see were printed copies for sale. I wonder if that means they have started to reinvest in the Specialist range again, or if they just realised they weren't making any money from the downloads....
Anyway, back on topic, if airbornegrove can find someone who has previously downloaded the free copies, he might find the experience system interesting.

I've got the Mordheim pdfs saved if you want them (I like the fact that I can carry them round on my phone rather than having to dig my actual rulebook out of a box...)

For a Mordheim experience you can always download Coreheim instead:

Glad you like it! To be honest I've been mostly inactive in terms of gaming and painting for a number of years but still take an interest. In the past I have enjoyed Mordheim and I know enough about Coreheim to know that it's a more thoroughly tested and thought through version of Mordheim. Actually it's quite well known so I can't take much credit here.

Personally, I'd go with a D&D style. (Old school since '79) GP = 1 xp,
Graduated scale for advancement, say 1200 2nd lvl; 2400 2nd, 3600 3rd, etc (for the fighter, steeper scale for mage and elf) and improving skills/abilities, eg., higher attack dice, body points, more spells, etc. Easy Peasy!
